2021-05-07 Thread Andy Whitcroft
Hello Alberto, or anyone else affected,

Accepted nvidia-graphics-drivers-465 into groovy-proposed. The package
will build now and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/nvidia-graphics-drivers-465/465.27-0ubuntu0.20.10.1 in a few hours, and
then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
groovy to verification-done-groovy. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-groovy. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in

[Bug 1915063] Re: Windows 10 wil not install using qemu-system-x86_64

2021-04-12 Thread Andy Whitcroft
The commit in question is marked for stable:

  commit 841c2be09fe4f495fe5224952a419bd8c7e5b455
  Author: Maxim Levitsky
  Date: Wed Jul 8 14:57:31 2020 +0300

kvm: x86: replace kvm_spec_ctrl_test_value with runtime test on the host

To avoid complex and in some cases incorrect logic in
kvm_spec_ctrl_test_value, just try the guest's given value on the host
processor instead, and if it doesn't #GP, allow the guest to set it.

One such case is when host CPU supports STIBP mitigation
but doesn't support IBRS (as is the case with some Zen2 AMD cpus),
and in this case we were giving guest #GP when it tried to use STIBP

The reason why can can do the host test is that IA32_SPEC_CTRL msr is
passed to the guest, after the guest sets it to a non zero value
for the first time (due to performance reasons),
and as as result of this, it is pointless to emulate #GP condition on
this first access, in a different way than what the host CPU does.

This is based on a patch from Sean Christopherson, who suggested this idea.

Fixes: 6441fa6178f5 ("KVM: x86: avoid incorrect writes to host

It appears to be in `v5.4.102` which is currently queued up for the
cycle following the one just starting.

[Bug 1918134] Re: LRMv4: switch to signing nvidia modules via the Ubuntu Modules signing key

2021-04-09 Thread Andy Whitcroft
I have tested installing linux-modules-nvidia-460 on each of
groovy:linux, focal:linux, and bionic:linux, confirming that each
assembles (passing the sha256 checks) and inserts (failing to find
hardware).

@tseliot has tested this also on his Nvidia hardware with good results.

[Bug 1919315] [NEW] binary assembly failures with CONFIG_MODVERSIONS present

2021-03-16 Thread Andy Whitcroft
Public bug reported:

LRM and the end-user system are intended to assemble the package in the
same manner to ensure we have reproducible binaries. This is needed so
that pre-generated signatures are applicable. It seems for (at least
some installations) when CONFIG_MODVERSIONS is set that though the LRM
assembly completes correctly in the face of seemingly benign errors,
that the final end-user assembly only works for two of the four kernel
modules.

Cleaning up the errors for _only_ the end-user assembly renders the
binaries identical to those produced in the main package and thus
matching the signatures. It is unclear as to the trigger leading to the
failure to assemble on the end-user system.

[Bug 1918659] [NEW] switch wireguard over to a full supported backport for v5.4 kernels

2021-03-11 Thread Andy Whitcroft
Public bug reported:

Upstream produces a proper independent backport of wireguard for v5.4
based kernels. Due to the nature of the compat version in the DKMS
packages some features are not implemented there leading to worse
performance. This proper backport is now in use in the majority of
distros which use the v5.4 base, and as such support for v5.4 is likely
to end soon in the compat tree. Switch to using that backport.

tl;dr

$ git clone
https://git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-kernel/ubuntu/+source/linux/+git/focal
$ cd focal
$ git cherry-pick aa350dbe3a1ee5e062228f8f5ebd2ffb6e58709c
b41352a93c163afafd29f56bb18fd3c0fef1120c
$ curl
 | git am -s

The whole series should apply cleanly. Afterwards, simply enable
CONFIG_WIREGUARD=y and you're good to go.

** Description changed:

Upstream produces a proper independent backport of wireguard for v5.4
based kernels. Due to the nature of the compat version in the DKMS
packages some features are not implemented there leading to worse
performance. This proper backport is now in use in the majority of
distros which use the v5.4 base, and as such support for v5.4 is likely
to end soon in the compat tree. Switch to using that backport.

[Bug 1918134] Re: LRMv4: switch to signing nvidia modules via the Ubuntu Modules signing key

2021-03-11 Thread Andy Whitcroft
We will also need to ensure master kernels have updated dkms-build and
dkms-build--nvidia-N as we will sync those into the new linux-
restricted-modules packages and break them.

To minimise effort reviewing all of those packages for -security safety,
we should simply rebuild all of them in the kernel security team PPA and
publish them all to -updates/-security.

I think I agree with @sbeattie, that the rule should be to always
promote dkms package changes which correct for build issues in the
kernel to -security on the presumption that the kernel will soon need it
as it moves to -security.

[Bug 1918134] [NEW] LRMv4: switch to signing nvidia modules via the Ubuntu Modules signing key

2021-03-08 Thread Andy Whitcroft
Public bug reported:

To allow decoupling of nvidia-graphics-drivers- streams and
versions from the underlying kernel versions we wish to be able to sign
new kernel modules into an existing kernel after the fact. Under bug
#1898716 we added support for an Ubuntu Modules signing key certificate.
Rebuild the LRM package to make use of this new signature.

This involves splitting the LRM package into three. linux-restricted-
modules first builds the nvidia-graphics-drivers-* we require signed.
linux-restricted-generate then consumes the .o's produced in that build
and forms a signing custom binary upload for this. linux-restricted-
signatures then consumes the signing result from the LRG upload and
expresses clean redistributible signatures which are consumed by LRM at
installation time. LRG must be embargoed as it (necessarily) generates
fully formed .ko files for signing.

Additional process is added to the kernel build life-cycle to handle the
privacy requirements of the LRG/LRS interaction.

[Bug 1917034] [NEW] switch LRM to be signed using the Ubuntu Drivers signing key

2021-02-26 Thread Andy Whitcroft
Public bug reported:

We currently build and sign the nvidia-graphics-drivers-* packages in
the main kernel package, pull off the signatures and throw away the
builds. Later in LRM we build them again (builds are performed in a
reproducible manner) and attach the signatures we produced in the main
kernel package. While functional we have to respin the entire kernel if
the nvidia version changes, which makes updates to nvidia almost
impossible outside of the SRU cycle, and tricky even then.

Now that we have an Ubuntu Drivers signing key we should be using this
to sign the nvidia-graphics-drivers-* .ko's.

and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See

please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-groovy. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
