[Bug 1899233] Re: post login - no apps launched - virtualbox-dkms 6.1.10-dfsg-1~ubuntu1.20.04.1: virtualbox kernel module failed to build

2021-01-12 Thread Anthony Borrow
Just confirming that after running into this issue I purged
virtualbox-6.1, added the repository, and installed 6.1.16 and was able
to move forward. So #12 and #15 helped me get things working again. I
agree with @stamster that it would be good to get 20.04 LTS bumped to
virtualbox 6.1.16.

[Bug 1864306] Re: package grub-pc 2.04-1ubuntu12.1 failed to install/upgrade: installed grub-pc package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1

2020-10-15 Thread Anthony Borrow
I have two instances running with the same provider (Linode). One
upgraded fine about a month ago. The other has this grub-pc error. The
only differences I noted in the /boot/grub folder was that the one that
is not working has the default and menu.lst files present. Not sure if
it is related but it would appear (anecdotally) that something changed
between my upgrading of the two instances.

2015-01-31 Thread Anthony Borrow
I have a multipage document with 2 columns and whenever I select text

turns gray and cpu maxes out. I am not very patient so I force close
the document. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help provide
more information. It seems fairly reproducible. Peace - Anthony

[Bug 1307236] Re: NVidia Issues - blurry text after upgrading from 13.10 to 14.04

2014-04-18 Thread Anthony Borrow
@Alberto - I understand that you do not support the NVidia installer. I
mentioned it as a workaround as that is what I needed to get my system
working again without the blur and I needed to go back to being
productive. I was thinking with Bill's information with the blur and
mine without that something might emerge as the cause - it seemed to be
focus related. Do you have a recommended package think would be best to
install nvidia-prime or another? When I get a moment, I could try
uninstalling the NVidia installer and then working with what is
supported to provide a nvidia-bug-report.log. Peace - Anthony

[Bug 1307236] [NEW] NVidia Issues - blurry text after upgrading from 13.10 to 14.04

2014-04-13 Thread Anthony Borrow
Public bug reported:

I have a System76 Bonoboo with a GeForce GTX 670MX

I upgraded from 13.10 to 14.04 and after the upgrade finished I logged
in and the text in the windows would get blurry until I refocused on the
window and then get blurry again. I tried various nvidia installs
(nvidia-common, nvidia-prime, etc.) and when I would reboot I would get
the lightdm screen to authenticate but the dash panel would not appear
after logging in.

Looking at .xsessions I noticed:

init: at-spi2-registryd main process ended, respawning
init: at-spi2-registryd respawning too fast, stopped

My workaround has been:

apt-get purge nvidia*
and then to run NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-331.49.run

xrandr shows:

Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 3280 x 1080, maximum 16384 x 16384
LVDS-0 connected primary 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y
axis) 382mm x 215mm
   1920x1080 60.0*+ 40.0
HDMI-0 connected 1360x768+1920+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

   1440x480 60.1
   1280x768 59.9
   1280x720 60.0 59.9
   1024x768 60.0
   800x60060.3
   720x48059.9 60.1
   640x48059.9 59.9
DP-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DP-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DP-2 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

Let me know if any other information would be helpful. I have seen that
there are some nvidia related issues that will hopefully be worked out.
I just wanted to document my experience in case others have a similar
problem.

Peace - Anthony

2012-10-06 Thread Anthony Borrow
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected package-from-proposed

** Description changed:

I like to do some beta testing on my personal computer. I had the KM
  C552DS network printer installed and working with Cups 1.5.2 in 12.04;
however, after upgrading to 12.10 and cups 1.6.1 the printer does not
work. In fact when I send the test page (using ipp://192.168.1.50/ipp)
it causes the copier to power off and then it comes right back on. I
thought it might be related to the job history error but was not able to
get ipp14://192.168.1.50/ipp to work either (it said it could not find
the printer). In any case, I figured I would report these errors and
hope that things get improved in the cups package. Let me know how I can
be of help. Peace - Anthony

p.s. - I also noticed some corruption in the printer status and I'll add
a couple screenshots so that you can see that strange behavior.

[Bug 1053443] Re: Unable to print to Konica Minolta C552DS printer - job history

2012-10-06 Thread Anthony Borrow
I upgraded to cups 1.6.1-0ubuntu10 and tried both ipp and ipp14 - both
still not working. In fact, none of the protocols work smb lpd, etc. I
was attempting to print a test page. The network printer tests show that
it is able to find the printer. My best guess is that it is related to
either Bad driver information file
/usr/share/cups/drv/cupsfilters.drv! or the cups-ipp-missing-job-
history issue. I've provided updated information via apport-collect -p
cups. If you need anything else or have things you would like me to try
just let me know. Peace - Anthony

The problem has re-emerged. Would it be better to re-open this issue or
create another? I'm suspecting another issue would be better so as to
provide the latest information. Peace - Anthony

[Bug 1053443] Re: Unable to print to Konica Minolta C552DS printer - job history

2012-09-21 Thread Anthony Borrow
The upgrade today (perhaps libgtk3.0 - I forget which one seemed to
address an issue with network printing) seems to have resolved this
issue. I was able to print this morning and the status in the printers
window no longer shows corruption. I am still seeing the no history
message in the printer feedback at the bottom of the printers window;
however, the warning is not showing up in the error log. Looking at the
cups error log I am also no longer seeing the error related to
cupsfilters.drv. I do continue to receive:

W [21/Sep/2012:08:18:44 -0600] CreateProfile failed:

but I consider that another issue and it is not preventing me from
printing so I'm less concerned about the color manager warnings and
would consider them a separate issue. Please feel free to close this
issue as resolved by another issue or not a cups bug as appropriate. If
the problem re-surfaces I can create another issue.

Peace - Anthony

[Bug 1053443] [NEW] Unable to print to Konica Minolta C552DS printer - job history

2012-09-20 Thread Anthony Borrow
Public bug reported:

I like to do some beta testing on my personal computer. I had the KM
C552DS network printer installed and working with Cups 1.5.2 in 12.04;
however, after upgrading to 12.10 and cups 1.6.1 the printer does not

[Bug 976764] [NEW] glipper - grow plugin removed from 12.04

2012-04-08 Thread Anthony Borrow
Public bug reported:

I installed Ubuntu 12.04 and added glipper; however, in 11.10 when I was
using glipper I found the grow plugin very helpful. I notice that it has
been removed from the package for 12.04. When I tried adding the grow
files to /usr/share/glibber/plugins glibber stopped working properly so
I have purged and reinstalled without grow. Is there a reason why the
grow plugin was removed from the package and is there anyway to get back
this functionality? Peace - Anthony

[Bug 976764] Re: glipper - grow plugin removed from 12.04

2012-04-08 Thread Anthony Borrow
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 957092 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/957092

Well it looks like the plugin is included in the fresh install. When I
initially installed 12.04 I did not see the grow plugin as an option;
however, after purging and reinstalling today I do see it so I believe
this issue can be closed. I do not see the grow plugin in the list of
plugins but perhaps it is considered a default plugin now (sorry I am
not familiar with the development of this tool). In any case, things
seem to be working for me although it is a bit of mystery since the grow
files are not in the plugins directory. I also see now that I had filed
this earlier and forgotten that I had done so - I will mark this as a
duplicate of my original inquiry. Peace - Anthony

Just an update that I ran a apt-get purge glipper and manually removed
the /usr/share/glipper/plugins directory and then re-installed and this
time the grow plugin was enabled by default. My guess is that the plugin
is included by default. In any case, this issue can be closed as I do
not believe any further work is required. Peace - Anthony

[Bug 957092] [NEW] glipper package (precise) no longer contains plugin grow.py

2012-03-16 Thread Anthony Borrow
Public bug reported:

I began playing with 12.04 today doing some testing and noticed that
glipper in 11.10 contained a plugin called grow.py that is not included
in 12.04. I was curious if this was an intentional or accidental
omission. I found the grow plugin to be a pretty good feature as it
keeps the history shorter and thus makes it more efficient to use. I've
also noticed the the new glipper does not seem to be as stable and it
looks like those bugs are being worked on. Let me know if I can help
with testing. Peace - Anthony

http://packages.ubuntu.com/oneiric/all/glipper/filelist
vs.
http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/all/glipper/filelist

I originally asked if this omission was intentional at:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/glipper/+question/190817
and was encouraged to file a bug report. If there is anything I can do
to be helpful just let me know. Peace - Anthony

2009-04-18 Thread Anthony Borrow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: thinkfinger-tools

I was able to use my fingerprint reader for logging in to Ubuntu with
version 8.10; however, when upgrading to 9.04 it stopped working. I
checked the pam.d/common-auth (comments removed):

authrequiredpam_unix.so try_first_pass nullok_secure
auth[success=1 default=ignore]  pam_unix.so nullok_secure try_first_pass
authrequisite pam_deny.so

working and that it matches my fingerprint; however, even though the
login screen says to type password or use fingerprint, scanning my

[Bug 361332] [NEW] tty1-6 not working after upgrade from 8.10

2009-04-14 Thread Anthony Borrow
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from Ubuntu 8.10 to 9.04 beta, when I attempt to go to
the terminal using CTRL+ALT+F1-6 all I get is a black screen with a
flashing underscore (no cursor). I am able to go back to X with CTRL-
ALT-F7. I am running on a Dell XPS M1330 with an NVIDIA GeForce 8400M
video. I wanted to install the latest NViDIA driver however I am unable
to get to a terminal to do so. I had no problems before the upgrade.
Peace - Anthony

p.s. - I am not convinced that this is not just an NVidia issue. So I
will try another driver and report back but it smells like an NVidia
issue to me.

[Bug 339337] Re: gnome-sudoku uses python-numpy which is not installed by default

2009-03-09 Thread Anthony Borrow
I just did the system updates and it is now working so it seems to be
resolved as it is now using gnome-games version 1:2.24.1.1.-0ubuntu1. I
suspect this is a temporary fix until things get cleaned up with the
newer version. Thanks for your efforts at tracking this down patching it
up. Peace - Anthony

[Bug 326457] [NEW] typo3 breaks apache2

2009-02-06 Thread Anthony Borrow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: typo3

I had a nice working install of apache2 and php5 (with apc and xdebug).
I was curious about typo3 and installed the typo3 package. After doing
so, my php pages were not executing (getting option to open or save). I
checked /var/log and noticed the following:

PHP Warning: Module 'apc' already loaded in Unknown on line 0
PHP Warning: Module 'imap' already loaded in Unknown on line 0
PHP Warning: Module 'mcrypt' already loaded in Unknown on line 0
PHP Warning: Cannot load module 'XCache' because conflicting module 'apc' is
already loaded in Unknown on line 0
[Fri Feb 06 20:42:17 2009] [notice] Apache/2.2.9 (Ubuntu) PHP/5.2.6-2ubuntu4
with Suhosin-Patch mod_ssl/2.2.9 OpenSSL/0.9.8g configured -- resuming normal
operations
[Fri Feb 06 20:42:25 2009] [notice] child pid 9373 exit signal Segmentation
fault (11)

I checked the typo3 and it appeared to start up its own php instances.
In any case, I didn't feel like troubleshooting the details but figured
I would report here that installing typo3 over an existing/working
apache2 install with php5 module breaks it.

[Bug 303883] Re: package tomcat5.5-webapps 5.5.26-3ubuntu3 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 255

2008-12-16 Thread Anthony Borrow
Thierry - Thanks for your prompt response and please accept my apologies
for the delayed response as I was finishing up the semester. I'm
attaching a zip file of the requested logs. I suspect it was a transient
shutdown error, reinstalling seemed to work fine and AFAIK there are no
problems but my involvement with tomcat is minimal so it just means that
I have not noticed. Feel free to look at the logs and determine whether
anything needs to be done other than possibly just closing this as not a
bug. It sounds like you are familiar with what may have caused my
situation. Thanks again for all you do to support open source. Peace -
Anthony

[Bug 59981] Re: suspend makes network-manager say eth1 is a wired device

2008-05-18 Thread Anthony Borrow
Just to follow up that I do have suspend working now. I think I did have
to remove the mod iwl3945 and modprobe it on resume in order to get it
to work but it is functioning now for me. If I turn networking off in
the nm-applet then it resets as ethanray indicated. For the most part, I
think most of the stuff works for suspend on the XPS m1330 so I am
happy. This remains the last little annoyance. The good news is that
even though it displays the eth0 (wired connection) the wireless does
work after the resume it just is not being displayed.

[Bug 121362] Re: nm-applet thinks it's connected to the wired network, when it's connected to the wireless network

2008-05-16 Thread Anthony Borrow
I am running Ubuntu 8.04 on a Dell XPS M1330. After suspend I have
restart all the networking stuff (rmmod iwl3945, modprobe, and do a
networking restart via a dbus/resume.d/ script. In any case, it re-
establishes the wireless connection just fine but the nm-applet does not
show that it is connected because it switches from looking at wlan0 to
eth0. If I kill the nm-applet and restart it then it finds wlan0 just
fine. Any suggestions as to the root cause or what I can do to not have
to kill the nm-applet? Thanks - Anthony

[Bug 59981] Re: suspend makes network-manager say eth1 is a wired device

2008-05-15 Thread Anthony Borrow
Interesting, I have a Dell XPS m1330 on Ubuntu Hardy 8.04. For suspend,
I have to reboot in order to re-establish a connection. It seems able to
scan but not to connect after starting back up. I believe the mod
(driver) is IWL3945. I've not tried restarting HAL manually to see if
that helps. I've simply rebooted and then it eventually works but even
then I have to fiddle with disabling the networking and re-enabling
before it finally picks back up again.
