[Bug 408165] Re: Linksys By Cisco WUSB600N v2 Doesn't Work

2011-06-20 Thread Arik
Okay it finally gave up the ghost about 12 hours ago. Attached is the
Oops it created. Replugging didn't help.

Reboot hung on something (the graphical screen obstructed the view) and
I had to use the old Alt-Shift-SysRq to sync-unmount-boot the box.

All in all having 6 days of continuous connectivity on a desktop is...
doable... but I cannot call this a stable setup.

2011-06-17 Thread Arik
Update: last 4 days the network has been up non-stop. No oops, no drops,
ping-flooded to my local gateway for 24 hours, packet loss 0.01% (nil).

I'm happy.

Using the 2.4.0.1 package from #85 with network manager. Didn't try wicd
but I doubt it will change the stability.

[Bug 408165] Re: Linksys By Cisco WUSB600N v2 Doesn't Work

2011-06-14 Thread Arik
Just a confirmation really.

Linux chikara 2.6.38-8-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Mon Apr 11 03:31:24 UTC
2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

After a few days of using it, 2.5.0.0 (from ralink site) is flaky and
exhibits the following:

* disconnect after leaving overnight producing the attached oops
* inability to connect after cold-plugging
* occasional disconnects
* occasional 802.11n authentication failure - NetManager would claim a failure
to authenticate but would auth with a 802.11g network. Usually accompanied by
an Oops but I don't have a sample

I have compiled 2.4.0.1 a.k.a. the empry driver as per emory's
instructions and I am currently using it. It allows cold-plugging at
least. We'll see in a few days.

[Bug 140663] Re: mdns4_minimal switch off home-network

2009-09-25 Thread Arik Kfir
Confirmed this on both Jaunty and Karmic 32bit.

I understand that the reason Ubuntu puts a [NOTFOUND=return] before dns
is for performance reasons, however performance reasons should not cause
usability problems, IMO. At the very least, as a user, I expect a way to
control this behavior via some checkbox somewhere in my network
preferences, or even better - during the installation process.

Of course, if Jasey is correct and there is actually a bug in
libnss_dns.so.2, then the solution is probably to fix the bug rather
than go around it...

[Bug 49068] Re: Java reports time zone incorrectly during CDT (US Daylight saving time)

2008-10-16 Thread Arik Kfir
Allen Crider wrote:
I would want any changes made to go into the Sun code where it
would be maintained as part of the upstream version of the JVM.
Yes, you are right. I was only asking because I thought maybe it would be a
small patch, which Ubuntu manages quite a few, in which case it would not be
too unusual. If it's a major undertaking - I agree full heartedly.

And as Java is supposed to be cross-platform and provide better
security, there may be a good reason for it not depending on the
operating system for the timezone database.
I'm afraid I don't agree with that - the Java platform does not guarantee EXACT
runtime results regardless of the platform - they (JVM architects) are not
naive and we all know that there are, and always will be, differences. For
example, the Java2D module uses DirectX on Windows, and OpenGL or X11 on
Linux/UNIX. This is a rational design - all operating systems provide pretty
much the same set of services, only in different APIs - Java simply wants to
abstract these different APIs, and does so very well. Time Date is simply
another API the OS provides, IMO.

Of course, that's a rant I should save for Sun... ;-)

However, I don't know whether such a change would fix the problem I
reported anyway. The problem I have is that the JVM is sometimes unable
to determine which time-zone it is in.
I think it will solve it, because finding out in which time-zone should be done
by calling one of the shared libraries the OS provides that does this (I'm
assuming there is such a lib...) rather than duplicate the code, which
undoubtedly has already been written by someone.

Anyway - it's just an opinion and as I said, I agree this should be directed to
Sun and not Ubuntu.
Cheers.

[Bug 267376] Re: [Request] OpenOffice.org 3.0 in Intrepid Backports

2008-10-16 Thread Arik Kfir
Hi.

I'm not affiliated with Canonical or Ubuntu, but wanted to contribute a
few points:

bastafidli wrote:
I believe the decision to do not include OO.o 3.0 in 8.10 is
 1. very bad publicity for Intrepid, when comparing Ubuntu with Fedora or
 Mandriva this is a
huge argument why not to use it and rather go somewhere else.
I think we all need to put this in perspective - people who switch from one
distribution to another for such a reason will likely come back to that
distribution for similar reasons for the next release.

 2. very bad demonstration of inability to listen to users. I believe
 overwhelming desire and
what's worse expectation is that OO.o 3.0 should be present in 8.10. This
 world runs on expectations.
The strongest thing Ubuntu has going for it is the community of users, not
 the technology
which is just a commodity. Playing these games by disappointing users is very
 bad precedence.
I don't agree - who are the users? Ubuntu tries to position itself for the bulk
user group out there. By Bulk users group I mean those that have no idea what
Launchpad is, and don't care, either. They are the people that go to Wal-Mart
to buy a computer, or enter the Dell site to order a laptop that looks good, or
just buy a small netbook. These people will become the majority of Ubuntu's
users are they are the ones who are going to win the war on Microsoft for us
(by us I mean us Linux users).

These users expect things to *** just work ***. No excuses such as
well, it's a x.0 release, wait for x.1 or something similar. They want
it to work - nothing less and nothing more. Therefor, I completely
understand Canonical's position to refrain from *potentially* unstable
(yet) software which has just been released, such as OOo 3.0. That's why
backports was created.

Again - this is just a personal opinion. And evidently a minority one as well
;-)
But I just thought it's something worth bringing to the table.

Cheers.

[Bug 267376] Re: [Request] OpenOffice.org 3.0 in Intrepid Backports

2008-10-16 Thread Arik Kfir
Andrew Conkling: I don't know if that's the reason people (mostly)
prefer Ubuntu - but I agree that the time-line is important.

bastafidli: I was aware you're talking about a different set of users;
and you are right in saying that the tinkering users (like you and I)
are the ones that DO care and are usually passionate. The point I was
trying to make is simply that Ubuntu has another set of users that are
just as important as us passionate users, and definitely did not mean
to hint that one group is more important than the other - only that this
should be judged on a case-by-case basis, and in this case - I humbly
disagree with you and believe Canonical made the right choice, because
the release dates were so close.

I think it all boils down to who takes responsibility on bugs: Canonical
consider OOo as an intrinsic part of Ubuntu - one that they are taking
quality responsibility for, and therefor want to assure that the code is
stable. (I know that ultimately the upstream has responsibility, but the
simple users see that office suite that came with Ubuntu, not OOo,
despite the splash screen...)

IF they were to treat OOo as just another product, that someone else
provides and is responsible for (like, say, iTunes) the issue would not
come up. But since it is considered as a critical part of the OS, they
want to make sure that what ships with it is the most stable version,
not the most recent one.

[Bug 49068] Re: Java reports time zone incorrectly during CDT (US Daylight saving time)

2008-10-15 Thread Arik Kfir
I'm not familiar with the internals of the JVM, but why does a JVM even
need its own database? Why can't it use the native OS's timezone
database, just like it abstracts many other OS services.

Although I'm a Java programmer, I firmly believe that managing the time
zone information is the system administrator job, since it interacts
with many other services and processes on the system (cron, backups,
etc).

Would patching the JVM to make it use Ubuntu's native time-zone database
be a daunting task, in your opinion? (I'm asking because I'm not at all
familiar with the actual JVM source code)
