Running into the same problem with both Ubuntu and Kubuntu on an older HP 8200 Elite SFF. Core i5 2400 box. Have set the blank SSD to IDE and ACHI mode, used defaults in Rufus to create the USB stick for installation. The display that is attached is a 1080p screen. So, I don't think it is a scaling issue, which shouldn't affect GRUB installation anyway.
