Here is my modified /usr/share/themes/Human/gtk-2.0/gtkrc file.
All I did was comment out engine ubuntulooks and add an engine
clearlooks directive.

I was saving a MP3 stream to WAV file, and mpg123 (which is actually
symlinked to mpg123-esd on my system) died when the output file hit 2GB
in size. It appears that mpg123-esd needs to be recompiled with
largefile support. Largefile support
Lowering the color depth for the X server is not a great workaround.
It seems that the ubuntulooks engine is buggy, so I modified the Human
theme gtkrc (/usr/share/themes/Human/gtk-2.0/gtkrc) to use the
clearlooks engine instead of the ubuntulooks engine, and all is well --
