In step 1 (comment #30), use 'text nomodeset' as options. This will get you
into the console mode without troubles.
Then follow the rest of the steps.
The important point is, you must get into console mode and modify
rc.local so that radeon driver is *reloaded* with 'nomodeset=1' along
