[Bug 1927037] [NEW] ath9k driver: miniPCIe Atheros AR93xx not recognized

2021-05-03 Thread Ash Wilson
Public bug reported:

Expected behavior:
Network adapter should be visible via `iw list`, `iwconfig`, and `ifconfig`.

Actual behavior:
Network adapter is visible in `lspci` and `lshw`, but not in `iw list`,
`iwconfig`, or `ifconfig`

Details:
The Atheros network card is detected by the ath9k driver when installed into a
machine with x86_64 architecture. When the same card is installed into a
miniPCIe-to-PCIe adapter, then plugged into a Raspberry Pi CM4 IO breakout
board, the network adapter can be seen via lspci and lshw but is not seen by
iw, iwconfig, or ifconfig.

[Bug 1915568] [NEW] lessfile is broken when using ~/.lessfilter

2021-02-12 Thread Ash Holland
Public bug reported:

If ~/.lessfilter exists and is used by lesspipe/lessfile, then lessfile
will make the filename of the temporary file visible in less. The
attached patch fixes this. (The filename is echoed to less after the
subshell exits; trying to do it inside the subshell means it ends up
looking to less like part of the file being viewed.)

To test this, you can place the following file at ~/.lessfilter:

#!/bin/sh
echo foo
exit 0

Then opening any file in less (assuming you have lessfile set up) should
show "foo". The bug is that, currently, it also shows a filename from
somewhere in /tmp.

[Bug 1575053] Re: Please move the "$HOME/snap" directory to a less obtrusive location

2020-09-22 Thread Ash Holland
I would suggest you read through the past comments on this issue, and
the design document you mention. For example, "put things in the XDG
directories (~/.local, ~/.cache, ~/.config)" has been suggested many
times; it's explained earlier in the comments here (e.g. comment #30)
why that wouldn't work, and the same applies to an environment variable
like $SNAPS_HOME.

[Bug 1892872] [NEW] "repeat" checkbox gets out of sync with actual repeat state

2020-08-25 Thread Ash Holland
Public bug reported:

If you use an external application to ask totem to start/stop repeating
(via e.g. `playerctl loop -p totem None` or `playerctl loop -p totem
Playlist`), then the "Repeat" checkbox in the UI changes state, but
totem doesn't actually start/stop repeating the track.

Concretely:

- start totem playing a file
- tick the "Repeat" checkbox
- run `playerctl loop -p totem None`
- observe that the "Repeat" checkbox is no longer checked
- observe that totem continues to repeat the music

[Bug 1885984] [NEW] "restart required" dialog appears too frequently after being dismissed

2020-07-01 Thread Ash Holland
Public bug reported:

Whenever I run an upgrade that requires a reboot (e.g. kernel upgrade),
I get a dialog saying "Please restart the computer to begin using your
updated software" immediately after the upgrade; fair enough, I click
"restart later". *Every time*, the same dialog appears about 3 minutes
later, asking me to restart. Usually it goes away for a bit longer after
I click "restart later" for the second time, but every time I do an apt
operation it appears again.

I would suggest that, probably, three minutes is not likely to be enough
time for _anyone_ to have finished doing whatever has caused them to
press "restart later" – it's especially bad that the dialog reappears
early if you do other things with apt, since you end up having to
continually dismiss it if you're trying to fix something broken before
you reboot.

Would it be an idea to rate-limit the dialog so that it appears, at
most, once an hour or so?

It seems like there is still an unresolved issue with Discord after
applying these patches: https://github.com/flathub/shared-

though I don't know if the issue is caused by libappindicator or if it's
a Discord problem that's exposed by the libappindicator-induced crashes

fwiw, that patch (or at least a slightly modified version which applies
on the Ubuntu 18.04 libappindicator) appears to fix the Discord
segfaults for me, and also looks correct from my reading of the gobject
documentation.

[Bug 1355454] Re: pantheon-files-plugin-dropbox missing dependency

2016-10-13 Thread Ash
The elementary-dropbox project(https://github.com/zant95/elementary-
dropbox) is working on loki but the purpose of the project isn't
integrating dropbox to pantheon-files. It just integrates dropbox to
wingpanel(makes dropbox appindicator show in wingpanel).

I have tested https://code.launchpad.net/~elementary-apps/pantheon-files
/pantheon-files-plugin-dropbox and after some fixes to makeit compile it
doesn't seem to work(neither emblems nor context menu items)

[Bug 1272028] Re: remount, not honored on bind mounts

John,

Sure thing. Here's my /sys/kernel/security/apparmor/features:

The profile dump is attached. Thanks for having a look! I was just
starting to trawl through the source to see if it was something I could
patch myself, based on your comment.

[Bug 1272028] Re: remount, not honored on bind mounts

2015-09-04 Thread Ash Wilson
I've attached a patch against the 2.9 branch that's working for me. I'm
allowing rbind as well as bind because that's the part of the actual
call that caused me to discover this. It looks like an equivalent change
could be made against master as well:

http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~apparmor-
dev/apparmor/master/view/head:/parser/mount.h#L106

Should I submit it to the mailing list, too?

Hmm, I was scp'ing binaries around and I seem to have broken
apparmor_parser on that box at the moment (glibc conflicts - I copied a
build from the wrong box by mistake).

I'm travelling over the weekend and early next week - I'll upload it as
soon as I have a chance to get that working again.

[Bug 1371685] [NEW] Can't upgrade to 14.04 from 13.10

2014-09-19 Thread Ash
Public bug reported:

The upgrade the 14.04 from 13.10 fails. I believe this is down to having
the xorg-edgers PPA installed, however when trying to purge it using
ppa-purge I get the following:

```~ ❯❯❯ sudo apt-add-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa
   ⏎
 == Xorg packages fresh from git ==
Currently supported releases are Trusty/14.04, and Utopic/14.10
* xserver 1.16 is now in for utopic, beware that fglrx does not support
it yet!
* WARNING: Do not use this PPA with the precise X backport stacks, aka
if you fresh install of 12.04.2 or newer. You can switch back to a
compatible one by installing xserver-xorg-lts-precise instead if you do
want to use these packages but horrible things will happen if you don't.
To revert to official packages, install the ppa-purge package and run
sudo ppa-purge xorg-edgers.
== Important notice ==
This PPA is currently meant to be used as a whole. Please do _not_
individually install packages from it, add it to your sources and let
your package manager pull in every update. The packages here build
against each other and compile different features based on whats
available at build time. Do not assume that because it lets you install
a DDX with just the driver and libdrm update that it will work.  These
packages are made with scripts that use the the current packages as the
base, so some dependencies can be wrong and your package manager will
not resolve that for you.  If you want to individually install something
from here, grab the source and rebuild it in your current environment
instead.
** Please do not publish instructions for how to install from this archive
without linking to this page! Anyone using packages from this archive is
expected to read this page first and it is recommended to check back
occasionally for notice on problems that may arise. **
[Bug 1295348] [NEW] interfaces(5) man page should mention 70-persistent-net.rules for consistent eth* naming
2014-03-20 Thread ash
Public bug reported:
Currently interfaces(5) says in KNOWN BUGS/LIMITATIONS:
   Unfortunately it can happen that the kernel assigns different  physical
   interface  names  to the same hardware at different times; for example,
   what was called eth0 last time you booted is now  called  eth1  and
   vice  versa.   This  creates  a  problem  if  you want to configure the
   interfaces appropriately.  A way to deal with this problem  is  to  use
   mapping  scripts  that  choose logical interface names according to the
   properties of  the  interface  hardware.   See  the  get-mac-address.sh
   script  in  the  examples  directory  for  an example of such a mapping
   script.  See also Debian bug #101728.
The modern solution, described in Debian docs [1], is to use edit
/etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules. I suggest we stop talking
about confusing get-mac-address.sh script and instead replace the last
two See… sentences with:
   See /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules for a way to set
interface names persistently.
I realize that Debian docs is linked at the end of this man page. But
it's not clear it will help with consistent names problem, because KNOWN
BUGS says get-mac-address.sh is needed for this. Let's help people that
are new to all these things :-)
[Bug 1171733] Re: Cannot connect to OS X (Regression)
2014-03-11 Thread Ash
On 26-Feb-2014 I identified the cause of this problem and proposed a
fix. I emailed the maintainer of remmina-plugin-vnc (Debian package)
(dktrkr...@debian.org) with a breakdown of the problem and the fix/s. I
did not receive a reply, so I will just attach email here instead.
It has to do with the fact that when the remmina vnc plugin is built on
newer versions of Debian (and/or Ubuntu) the compiler builds against the
system package version of libvncserver rather than the customized
internal version of libvncserver packaged with the remmina-plugin-vnc
source. These days the system package version of libvncserver is the
better option, and this is probably intended behavior, but remmina-
plugin-vnc looks for certain custom defined flags in its personal
version of libvncserver in order to enable Apple Authentication support.
It doesnt see these flags, so this feature doesnt work.
In my case, I simply removed the #IFDEF checks for these defined flags,
recompiled (still against the Debian package version of libvncserver)
and it worked correctly.
I would prefer to see this bug fixed at the Debian level, rather than
just the Ubuntu package.
[Bug 1106992] Re: tomoyo version mismatch, kernel panic
2013-01-28 Thread ash
FIX: Pull tomoyo-tools and libtomoyotools3 from quantal into precise.
Both binary packages (2.5.0-20120414-3) install cleanly. No backporting
required.
Importance was high when this mistake appeared before in Ubuntu.
Importance was high when the same problem appeared in Debian. It
breaks an upstream kernel security feature. Why not high now?
This bug existed on a production system, and has been repaired there by
replacing the tomoyo-tools package. Therefore running apport-collect on
that system will not reflect the presence of the bug described.
[Bug 1094138] Re: Modem Manager Locks Dual FTDI Serial Ports
2012-12-28 Thread Ash Charles
Ahh---that makes sense about the USB to Serial adapter--thanks for
explaining Alekasander.
As a USB-to-serial adapter is a generic device that may or may not be
connected to a modem, a manually-launched scan makes sense.  In the
interim though, it makes sense that distros adjust the blacklist to fit
their user base.
[Bug 1094138] [NEW] Modem Manager Locks Dual FTDI Serial Ports
2012-12-27 Thread Ash Charles
Public bug reported:
As per Question #217761, I'm submitting a bug report in order to include a
patch.  Details from question follow:
I'm trying to connect serial console to an embedded device and but I'm not able
to connect for the first 36 seconds after connection as modem-manager has
locked the /dev/ttyUSB1 file (as shown by '$ sudo lsof /dev/ttyUSB1'). By
blacklisting the USB ID (0403:6010) of the device in the
'77-mm-usb-devices-blacklist.rhles' udev rule, I can immediately access the
device.
Much like the commonly used single FTDI USB-serial converter chip (USD ID
0403:6001) that is blacklisted in this file 77-mm-usb-device-blacklist.rules,
I think the dual version (USB ID 0403:6010) chould also be added as it is
commonly used in JTAG debugged boards and embedded devices.
...
[Bug 1094138] Re: Modem Manager Locks Dual FTDI Serial Ports
2012-12-27 Thread Ash Charles
Are there any modems using a FT2232 chip without a custom USB device ID?
I suggested the change on the basis that the chip is commonly used in
embedded devices (e.g.
http://www.tincantools.com/product.php?productid=16134 and
https://www.gumstix.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=262) without
the extra eeprom used to set a custom VID/PID but expected (perhaps
naively) that modem designers would actually want a unique identifier
for their particular device.  I certainly understand dropping the patch
if there are Modem out there that would be broken by this change.
This is good to hear that the probe will be shorter in future versions
and avoiding automatic probing seems like a good change :).
[Bug 1041883] Re: Recent patch to asus-wmi module makes system unbootable
2012-10-03 Thread Ash
I was seeing this problem with Ubuntu 12.04 booting off SSD (similar to
my earlier openSUSE setup).
After a little fiddling around based on the info in this thread
(especially about asus_wmi_rfkill_init()) and the asus-wmi.c, I think
I've found the problematic module which seems to cause the race
condition. It is btusb.
I suspect the issue is more prominently seen when booting off SSD since
the asus-wmi and btusb's timing overlap but not that easily when booting
off a regular HDD.
To fix the issue on Ubuntu, this is what I did:
echo blacklist btusb | sudo tee /etc/blacklist-btusb.conf
echo /sbin/modprobe btusb | sudo tee /etc/rc.local
I've just moved insmodding the btusb module from the early modprobe
stage to the very last in the rc scripts. In other words you should
still have bluetooth working when the GUI starts up.
I rebooted at least 10 times without any issues, and I have almost all
the Fn key combinations working (except for Brightness and the keys
above space bar). I haven't got this high success rate in booting in the
past 1 - 2 months.
BTW, a similar fix also works for my openSUSE bootup (use
/etc/rc.d/boot.local instead of /etc/rc.local)
Could others who are having the problem - verify if this at least works
around the kernel panics as well as have asus-wmi working ?
[Bug 1041883] Re: Recent patch to asus-wmi module makes system unbootable
2012-10-02 Thread Ash
I have an UX32VD and I boot a 3.5.x kernel (from openSUSE). I can
confirm I have the exact same problem and hang as described in this
thread. (with the caps lock key LED flashing).
It takes me somewhere between 5 and 10 tries to get a working bootable
system when asus-wmi driver is not blacklisted.
Was this the only change done to fix the problem ?
[Bug 762203] Re: Computer is not turned off at shutdown
2011-09-15 Thread Ash
I experience this bug on my machine that's setup as a dedicated MythTV
box.  It automatically turns on and shuts down when it's scheduled to
record shows.  So you can understand how annoying this bug is when the
auto shutdown hangs and never completes meaning it never turns back on
again to record the next show unless I notice the problem and manually
intervene.
After doing the steps outlined in comment #41 my machine has been
shutting down consistently with out a problem for several weeks now.
I'm still running kernel 2.6.38-10-generic and being that this bug still
isn't properly fixed I'm very reluctant to update to kernel
2.6.38-11-generic in case the issue returns.
With only a month away from the next Ubuntu release it seems like this
bug is just being ignored.  Does anyone know if the issue is still
present with the current development version of 11.10?
[Bug 824369] [NEW] ubuntu 11.04 - lirc init script sets invalid ir protocol for imon driver (imon Looks like you're trying to use an IR protocol this device does not support)
2011-08-11 Thread Ash
Public bug reported:
I have the following VFD + IR device...
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 15c2:ffdc SoundGraph Inc. iMON PAD Remote Controller
With the following installed versions...
kernel: 2.6.38-10-generic
lircd: 0.8.7
...and configured using the devinput driver (config generated via
dpkg-reconfigure lirc) I get this error in syslog and lirc fails to work:
kernel: [   20.254591] imon 2-7:1.0: Looks like you're trying to use an IR
protocol this device does not support
kernel: [   20.254597] imon 2-7:1.0: Unsupported IR protocol specified,
overriding to iMON IR protocol
Running lircd manually works...
sudo /usr/sbin/lircd -n --output=/var/run/lirc/lircd --driver=devinput
--device=/dev/input/by-path/pci-:00:0b.0-usb-0:7:1.0-event
So to get lirc working when launched via the init script I have to
comment out the in_kernel_support() function so that it doesn't try
setting the incorrect protocol.
[Bug 816987] [NEW] Xubuntu 11.04 installer crashed towards end of install
2011-07-27 Thread Jason Ash
Public bug reported:
I was installing Xubuntu 11.04 on my Intel Celeron M 1.5GHz laptop, and
it crashed towards the end of the install process. When I left it before
I went to bed, it was slowly downloading updates. Then, when I checked
it in the morning, it said that the installer crashed and to file a bug
report here. The status bar at the bottom of the install window said
checking for packages to remove, so it crashed at or before this
stage. I was doing an install only, and I didn't have time to go into
live cd mode. I rebooted the with the live cd later (which I'm using
now) to submit this bug report. I looked for the files /var/log/syslog
and /var/log/partman under the root partition of my hard drive, but they
do not exist even when having show hidden files selected. The version
of ubiquity is the default one that comes with the live cd. Thanks.
The file is another folder:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/i386/libsigc++-2.0-dev/filelist
/ usr / lib / IACS -2.0/include/sigc + + + + config.h
and a point to include
  Missing file sigc++config.h
Status in “libsigc++-2.0” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Bug description:
  Other headers files of the libsigc++-2.0-dev library are requiring
  sigc++config.h that doesn't exist.
  For instance /usr/include/sigc++-2.0/sigc++/signal_base.h at line 25.
  This bug makes the library unusable for development, I copied a
  sigc++config.h of my own to fix this.
[Bug 797491] Re: overo lcd43 touchscreen does not work
2011-06-24 Thread Ash Charles
I can confirm this bug in linux-linaro-2.6.38 master and have tested Andy's
patch with both a DVI monitor attached and a LTE430WQ panel attached.  Both
types of screens worked although the 4.3 panel showed a vertical bar at one
point in the image.  It was not necessary to add the omapdss.def_disp=lcd43
argument.
Note, lgphilips 3.5 panels aren't fixed by this patch.
