[Bug 1705398] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2017-07-20 Thread Bartong
Public bug reported:

Seems to only happen when using the nouveau driver (switching to
nvidia-375 driver yields a stable system.)

Freeze has happened in two situations that I've noticed - first one was
when open Totem movie player, second one occurred when opening the Plex
Media Manager (which opens in Chrome browser).

[Bug 1701857] Re: Kernel Oops - unable to handle kernel paging request; RIP: 0010:[] [] fput+0x5/0x90

2017-07-17 Thread Bartong
So I now have stable system uptime exceeding 48 hours with no oops
messages - which was never close to happening before with LXD installed.

So based on that test I'd probably have to put the kernel issues down to
LXD. I have googled a bit and seen that there have been a number of
bugs in the 4.4 kernel that were related to LXD, but all seemed to have
been closed with fixes committed. Is it a chance I've found a new bug?
Or just something particularly related to the kernel modules I have
installed clashing with LXD (such as the nvidia proprietary driver and
virtualbox) ?

[Bug 1701857] Re: Kernel Oops - unable to handle kernel paging request; RIP: 0010:[] [] fput+0x5/0x90

2017-07-15 Thread Bartong
Thinking back on system changes I think these issues may have started
occurring roughly the time I installed LXD and started running
containers.

So I've uninstalled LXD and will monitor to see if the issue clears up.

Thanks.

[Bug 1701857] Re: Kernel Oops - unable to handle kernel paging request; RIP: 0010:[] [] fput+0x5/0x90

2017-07-06 Thread Bartong
I first noticed the problem on kernel 4.4.0-81. The computer froze up a
few times before I started digging into the logs to try and figure out
what was wrong. It was freezing about 3-4 times per day.

I rolled back to kernel 4.4.0-79, which seemed to be more stable but
still suffered an Oops at least once per day. Upgraded to 4.4.0-83 when
it became available, but still suffering an Oops occasionally.

Also around this time I was suffering graphics issues where the display
became unresponsive. There was no kernel oops, but it seemed the
nouveau driver was crashing. I've switched to the nvidia proprietry
driver, which has resulted in a stable display, but even since then a
kernel oops reoccured. Most recent log of the oops below.

I'm probably not too keen to go mainline kernel as this is not a testing
system - but could we achieve a similar test if I went for the HWE
kernel (which I think is currently 4.8 ?)

Thank you for your reply!

[Bug 268663] Re: files incoming through nautilus-share should be created with user ownership, instead of nobody

2009-11-01 Thread Bartong
This is still an issue in Karmic.

I tried using the 'inherit owner = yes' parameter both in
/var/lib/samba/usershares/sharename and in /etc/samba/smb.conf, but
this resulted in other clients not being able to write to the server, so
it is not a fix

The only fix I have found is to set 'create mask = 0777' and 'directory
mask = 0777' in the [global] section of /etc/samba/smb.conf which means
the owner and group is still nobody:nobody, but full read/write
permissions are granted to any user including guests on any file or
directory created in the share.

Setting these two parameters in /var/lib/samba/usershares/sharename
does not currently seem to work.

[Bug 284651] Re: owner of shared public folder is nobody

2009-11-01 Thread Bartong
This is still an issue in Karmic.

The only fix I have found is to set 'create mask = 0777' and 'directory
mask = 0777' in the [global] section of /etc/samba/smb.conf

I had originally tried to set these parameters in
/var/lib/samba/usershares/sharename but they do not seem to work in
there.

I also tried using the 'inherit owner = yes' parameter, but this
resulted in other clients not being able to write to the server.
