[Bug 1861969] [NEW] notifications for safe removal of drives disappear immediately

2020-02-04 Thread Baruch Youssin via ubuntu-bugs
Public bug reported:

I ask nemo to remove a drive safely.

Expected: When it is done, the notification that I can unplug the drive,
stays for a number of seconds.

Instead: It shows for a fraction of a second and disappears, so that I
am not sure that I can unplug the drive.

[Bug 1861968] [NEW] Removal of a drive closes all windows and stops file transfers

2020-02-04 Thread Baruch Youssin via ubuntu-bugs
Public bug reported:

When I ask nemo to safely remove a drive, it closes all its windows,
including those open on other drives, and aborts all file transfers on
other drives.

Expected: when I ask to remove a drive safely, all nemo windows that are
open on other drives, remain open and all transfers that do not involve
the drive I want to remove, continue.

Instead: all windows closed and transfers aborted.

[Bug 1825710] Re: Remove "Application is ready" notification

2020-01-01 Thread Baruch
For some reason this behaviour is much more apparent in Ubuntu 19.10
(actually the CPU has more threads too, maybe it is also a hint..)

This behaviour is so confusing I already typed wrong things to the wrong
window. Annoyance' and even a bit of a security risk, is you expect an
authorization form to open and you get this 'Application is ready'
instead ..

[Bug 1665881] [NEW] Edit Connections grayed out after setting up bridge

2017-02-18 Thread Baruch
Public bug reported:

The "Edit Connections" menu option in the networking menu is grated out.

It is still possible to activate the network connection editor by
running nm-connection-editor

This problem started after setting bridging.
Maybe it is related to the fact that now the network connection list is empty.

I managed to finish the installation after setting up a swap and /boot

This may have something to do with the problem.

[Bug 1574104] Re: grub-install: error: cannot find EFI directory. package shim-signed 1.12+0.8-0ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit sta

2016-05-06 Thread Baruch
FYI, I just gave up and changed system. (still some of the functionality
is lost)

I assume that the problem is the same (or very similar) and is related
to miss-understanding the current hardware configuration by grub or some
other configuration program.

The solution would probably be to copy whatever is one the old system
working so the change will be from an old working system to a new
working system. Breaking the boot should be prevented as first priority.

Only after the system boots properly the installer may offer improved
(but risky) boot options.

In short: don't break the computer when doing upgrades.

[Bug 1575305] Re: Ubuntu system broken after upgrade from 15.10 to 16.04

2016-04-27 Thread Baruch
So, after some fiddling around I started from scratch: updated BIOS, removed
all HDs and started with one HD that was used as a VM volume.
Luckily the disk that originated as a VM did boot from metal into the once
guest system an now a host Windows10. IMHO - A great KVM ability.

Thanks to Steve and Tiago for your help! (and for a very interesting
insight into the way secure boot works).

I think the bug can be closed.

/shim-signed/+bug/1575305

I'll try to switch over to the broken system and find logs to send.

Anything in particular?

[Bug 1575305] [NEW] Ubuntu system broken after upgrade from 15.10 to 16.04

2016-04-26 Thread Baruch
Public bug reported:

After unfortunate click on upgrade to 16.04 my system is now almost
useless (fortunately enough I can still work with a windows 10 VM.. )

Seems like grub is failing to find efi folder so there is an avalanche
of broken things - from shim to unity.

I'll try to open from the broken system and add some more information.

** Affects: shim-signed (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided

2016-04-26 Thread Baruch
Not sure how to answer this.

The system worked before mis-fortunately pressing upgrade to 16.04
what happened next was done by the installer and packages so as a user there is
very little to do about this.

Anyway here is how my "du /boot" looks like:

4 /boot/efi/EFI/ubuntu/fw
72 /boot/efi/EFI/ubuntu
76 /boot/efi/EFI
80 /boot/efi

2015-11-24 Thread Baruch Even
I've collated multiple patches for gpart and just a few days ago got a
patch to add btrfs support. I released 0.3 with this new support.
Hopefully it will go into Debian at some point in the near future and
from there can flow to Ubuntu as well.

[Bug 1429445] Re: multiple LibreOffice icons on the launch bar

2015-03-09 Thread Baruch Youssin
After a reboot, the behavior changed: there was no icon initially (as opposed
to one LibreOffice Calc icon when LibreOffice was not running which was before
the reboot). When I oppened one xls file, one LibreOffice Calc icon appeared.
When I opened two more ods files, two icons appeared for each one: one
LibreOffice Calc icon and one LibreOffice 4.4 icon. When I closed the original
xls, its one LibreOffice Calc icon disappeared with 4 other icons remaining.
The attached screenshot shows these 4 icons that control two ods files.
When I reopened the same xls again, another two icons appeared similarly to the
ods files (one LibreOffice Calc icon and one LibreOffice 4.4 icon).
When I opened a doc file, just one more LibreOffice 4.4 icon appeared.
Weird.

[Bug 1263379] [NEW] package mdk 1.2.6+dfsg-1 failed to install/upgrade: It thought it was already installed, but it was not.

[Bug 398431] [NEW] gprof reports time in nanoseonds, but explanatory text refers to milliseconds

2009-07-12 Thread Baruch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: binutils

Program: GNU gprof (GNU Binutils for Ubuntu) 2.19.1

binutils:
  Installed: 2.19.1-0ubuntu3
  Candidate: 2.19.1-0ubuntu3
  Version table:
 *** 2.19.1-0ubuntu3 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

OS: Linux eeepc 2.6.28-13-generic #45-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jun 30 19:49:51 UTC
2009 i686 GNU/Linux (Jaunty)

When I profile my program, I get a value of time per call that is in
nanoseconds. However, the explanatory text concerning time/call discusses
milliseconds. Please see below for an example.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Each sample counts as 0.01 seconds.
  % cumulative self self total
time seconds secondscalls ns/call ns/call name
 70.83 0.17 0.17main
 29.17 0.24 0.07 99000170.7170.71 inv

Note that this says 70.71 ns/call.

However, the text that explains the time per call reads as follows:

self the average number of milliseconds spent in this
ms/callfunction per call, if this function is profiled,
else blank.

total the average number of milliseconds spent in this
ms/callfunction and its descendents per call, if this
function is profiled, else blank.

Note that here we're talking about milliseconds.

The numbers are off by a factor of a million, which is probably too
much. I understand that with profiling you're looking more for
*relative* times, not absolutes. However, whatever times we're
considering, there should be some sort of agreement between the basic
units.

This is not a critical bug.

Re: [Bug 271577] Re: Firefox displays all text incorrectly

2009-01-22 Thread Baruch
Hi, Pedro:

No, I've got no interest in trying 8.10 or 9.04. 8.10 thoroughly
trashed my system when I upgraded from 8.04, so badly that I could no
longer even boot. I had to do a complete reinstall. That was enough to
convince me that upgrading was a very bad idea.

As for the firefox problem, I think it was a result of my adding some
gtk library.

I couldn't say whether this bug is still out there waiting to bite.
After the reinstall, I was careful to avoid anything that said 'gtk' in
it, so as to avoid the terrible text formatting issue. If I had a spare
computer, I might consider trying to isolate the bug, but since I don't,
I'm going to play it safe and not try to reproduce this bug. Sorry I
can't be more helpful.

Thanks for getting back to me, anyway.

[Bug 312667] [NEW] Help for Evolution is broken

2008-12-31 Thread Baruch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

When I click on the "Help Contents" menu option, I am presented with a
dialog box telling me:

Could not display help for this application.

There was an error launching the default action command associated with
this location.

This is a fresh install of Ubuntu Hardy Heron (8.04)

Evolution version 2.22.3.1

I expected the help system to activate.

Instead, I got a cryptic and completely useless error message that
offered absolutely no clue how to fix this or what might have gone
wrong.

I see that a similar bug was reported and supposedly fixed back in 2005,
but apparently it has once more reared its offensive head.

[Bug 271577] [NEW] Firefox displays all text incorrectly

2008-09-17 Thread Baruch
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu 8.04.1, with the KDE desktop. The package is Firefox
3.0. 'apt-cache policy firefox' results in:

firefox:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 3.0.1+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.3
  Version table:
 3.0.1+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.3 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com hardy-updates/main Packages
 3.0~b5+nobinonly-0ubuntu3 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Package

After a crash forcing a reboot, Firefox began to display text incorrectly.
Each word was separated by a space that took up the width of several
characters, as though three or four spaces were there instead of just one. The
cursor would jump the entire distance, so it's not extra spaces. I also copied
and pasted between Firefox and a word processor. The processor's text was
fine; Firefox's was distorted.

This display problem affects the text on the page, the menu and tab
text, dialog boxes, and anything else containing text.

I tried removing Firefox and all traces of its files and directories
(the hidden ones in the home directory, as well as in /usr/bin and
/usr/lib, then reinstalling, but that didn't work.

I also tried using firefox -ProfileManager to create a new profile, but
again this didn't work.

I've attached a screen capture to show what I'm talking about.

[Bug 175785] Konqueror crashes when clicking certain sites

2007-12-11 Thread Baruch
Public bug reported:

Konqueror crashes whenever I try to access this link to Adobe Reader:

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2_allversions.html

I'm using Konqueror 3.5.8 on KDE 3.5.8, running Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy).
I've got browser identification set to "default".

I believe that the first time I accessed this Website, I did not
encounter this crash, however I am not certain of this.

The crash handler output is as follows:

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

[Bug 132350] Mozilla-thunderbird does not save drafts

2007-08-13 Thread Baruch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mozilla-thunderbird

When I save a message for later work (as a draft), that message is not
there when I return.

If I save a draft, and then go look in the draft folder right away, I
see the message in there. However, if I close out of thunderbird and
then come back to it, the message is no longer in the draft folder.

This is an IMAP account. Other changes I make (such as moving messages)
also appear not to take place, so this may be a more general problem
than just the draft folder. For example, if I delete a message from the
inbox, that message may reappear there the next time I run thunderbird.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: i386
Date: Mon Aug 13 20:46:02 2007

Re: [Bug 113480] Re: Programs using Launchpad open the wrong browser

2007-05-10 Thread Baruch
Hello:

I understand your position, but this is the only case where I encounter
the problem. Other programs correctly open Firefox (my chosen browser).
Even Konqueror opens Firefox when I double-click an HTML file. It's not a
matter of my not being able to change my default browser to one of my
choice; it's that the bug reporting system doesn't recognize my choice,
whereas all the other programs that open browsers *do* recognize it.
That, to me, suggests that it is the program that is doing it, not some
missed setting (though of course, it could be something like that as well
- there are plenty of settings for me to play with).

Not to worry. Konqueror is a fine browser, one of the best. It's not
like it was trying to open IE or something...

[Bug 113744] [apport] gnomad2 crashed with SIGSEGV in strcmp()

2007-05-09 Thread Baruch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnomad2

This program crashes fairly often, generally when I am making change to
the device (transferring or deleting music). I have not noticed any
pattern to this - it can happen when I add/delete one track, or a dozen.

[Bug 113480] Programs using Launchpad open the wrong browser

2007-05-08 Thread Baruch
Public bug reported:

When I want to report a bug, whatever program is used to call Launchpad
opens up the wrong browser. It opens Konqueror, but my preferred (and
default) browser is Firefox.

Nothing wrong with Konqueror, but my choice of browsers should be
respected. Otherwise, it's almost like using M$ products...

The "steps" to reproduce this bug are simply to have a program crash,
and then to opt to report the problem. It will open Konqueror instead
of the chosen browser.

[Bug 108313] Re: sylpheed-claws-gtk2 needs to be renamed and updated

Moreover, the Sylpheed-claws-gtk2 help has links that are broken - they
refer to non-existent pages. There does not appear to be any help
available through the program itself, which INMSHO is also a bug.

[Bug 38821] Re: kwallet will not allow me *not* to use it

2007-05-01 Thread Baruch
I have the same problem - I cannot disable kwallet. I can understand
that security is important, but this is a one-user computer behind a
router, firewall, and all kinds of stuff, and I just don't want to
bother with kwallet. That should be a choice.

I'm using Feisty Fawn, all up to date.

[Bug 110887] Sylpheed-claws-gtk2 crashes when I view message in text/plain

2007-04-28 Thread Baruch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sylpheed-claws-gtk2

This bug is reproducible (to me, anyway). When I select a message in my
'sent items' folder, I can view it. However, when I then try to view it
as text/plain, sylpheed disappears without a trace, leaving behind only
bitter memories and a sort of crash notification.

I do not have the problem when I try to view it as text/html. I do not
have this problem when I click on the "text/html" icon, and *then* click
on the text/plain icon. I only get this problem when I try to go from
the message/rfc822 to the text/plain views.

HTH.
