This problem might be somehow related to KDE. The only reason I mention
this is because I was able to previously (as of yesterday) do a hdparm
-Y dev and have the device remain in sleep. This morning I installed
kubuntu-desktop and upon a subsequent reboot, the disk spins up
immediately.

Here's something additional; I'm unsure if it's pertinent. I get a
segfault when running 'strace firefox-3.5' (it would appear that
shiretoko detatches from strace). This is new hardware, though I have
(mostly) verified its stability by running memtest86+ for a day.

I should note that this or a similar problem is noticeable on Debian
Lenny - ie, high CPU usage by samba. This may or may not be related to
CUPS on Debian: restarting samba alone doesn't fix it on the debian
machine, but restarting cups -then- samba does.

wifi/ethernet, on Ubuntu 8.10, samba package 2:3.2.3-1ubuntu3.4). It

Janaka - I would suggest going into /etc/rc#.d and moving the S20samba
to K20samba, if you have not done so already. This should stop samba
from starting on boot.
