[Bug 588473] Re: shift key get stuck randomly

2012-03-05 Thread Bengt Olsson
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 715242 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/715242

I'm one of the original reporters of this problem (not using tvtime).
Since then I've switched to Windows 7 on that computer (Thinkpad T61).
The shift key still get stuck in random occasions, and behaves as I
described above! Ergo, it seems, at least in my case, that it is a real
low layer (BIOS?) problem and not an Ubuntu fault.

[Bug 588473] Re: shift key get stuck randomly

2010-08-30 Thread Bengt Olsson
Have had this on my thinkpad for several releases, now lately on my
64-bit 10.04 (earlier I used 32-bit). I don't know if this helps, but
most of the times (not all) a single quick tap on the (left) shift key
gets me out of the "shift key pressed state".

[Bug 390508] Re: notify-send ignores the expire timeout parameter

2010-04-11 Thread Bengt Olsson
I don't have the background or knowledge to understand the reasoning
underlying the design decisions behind notify-osd so I will refrain from
demanding design changes, even though it seems a little bit peculiar
that having a configurable time-out (with a max-time perhaps) could hurt
that much.

But, from a use case of view there are two very different scenarios that
fits the use of notify-osd and demands different time-outs:

1. "Un-solicited" notifcation (for example, mail arriving)
2. "Pop-up response" use case (for example, outcome of runned script)

In the first case, a longer time-out is justified in order for the user
to notify it, but in the second case, where the user watches the screen,
waiting for the response, the long time-out is annoying. I bet 95% of
all complainers use the notify-osd as in the second example.

These two use cases would require different time-outs.

[Bug 275809] Re: X lock-up when logging in from screensaver - crash in intelSwapBuffers()/ intelCopyBuffers()

2009-03-27 Thread Bengt Olsson
Steve,

Sorry for not reporting before, but I changed back to Hardy and disabled
Compiz in the end of January. This for general stability reasons, Hardy
performs more solid on my T61, and I can't risk interruptions on my work
computer. I think that vouchy's comment above is relevant to this
problem as well as a number of others. My feeling is that it is the
combination of the hw, the exa acceleration system, the intel driver
that is in the core of the problem, just from scanning related posts.
Use of Compiz seems to accelerate the problem. But I don't have any more
hard facts, and since I changed back as described above I haven't had
any more lockups.

So its fair for you to handle this bug as you see fit, since I can't
contribute more.

2009-01-03 Thread Bengt Olsson
Tried to get a backtrace according to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace.
I attached to the X process but could not interrupt it with Ctrl-c as
decribed in the text, gdb died with Ctrl-c. Instead I skipped step 4
(continue) and did backtrace anyway. Don't know if it is any help but
here it is anyway.

[Bug 275809] Re: spontaneous X lock-up: "mieqEnequeue: out-of-order valuator event; dropping."

2009-01-03 Thread Bengt Olsson
OK I've been running the above intrepid debs since dec 29, and just now
I got a look-up again, this time when logging in remote via vnc from
home. The T61 at work is up running and locked by the screen-saver. The
screen saver is running without any "effect" i.e. it is black. I first
typed my passwd wrong and when I retyped the passwd and hit "enter" (or
pressed "OK" don't remember which) X locked up. I logged in via ssh and
saw the usual symptom: X process running at 100% (on one of the cores).

This time with no output in Xorg.0.log (at least not yet after about 20
minutes), but it is clearly the same problem as before. Nothing in
syslog or messages. Compiz is enabled.

I vaguely recall that at least a couple of lock-ups have been associated
with logging in from the screen-saver.

Attaching lspci output again.

Is there any other tests I can do while in lock-up state now during the
week-end (I have to reboot on monday)?

Marcus,

Sounds like a good work-around, however I have no /etc/asound.conf

Same problem with very low recording volume (and no "Digital" control
options in the alsamixer)

2008-12-20 Thread Bengt Olsson
Ok thanks will do, but its on my work machine so it will take some days
since I started X-mas holidays now... Also I disabled compiz since a
while back and have had no occurrence of the fault since. I will turn on
compiz again but, since the lock-ups where very sporadic even with
compiz, it may take some time before I can verify that it works (will
use the Intrepid debs).

However, I attach the current lspci output (without compiz enabled)

Happy X-mas!

[Bug 275809] [NEW] spontaneous X lock-up: "mieqEnequeue: out-of-order valuator event; dropping."

2008-09-29 Thread Bengt Olsson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Running Hardy updated as of today on a Thinkpad T61 with intel X3100
graphics:

$ dpkg -l | grep xserver-xorg-video-intel
ii xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.2.1-1ubuntu13.6 X.Org X server -- Intel
i8xx, i9xx display d

I occasionally run into X lock-ups where the desktop freezes, except for
mouse. Not possible to Ctrl-Alt-F1 out to terminal. Laptop can be
reached from ssh and it is seen that the /usr/bin/X process runs at
almost 100% CPU. The Xorg.0.log contains repetitions of

tossed event which came in late
 mieqEnequeue: out-of-order valuator event; dropping.

Using compiz and have direct rendering enabled. Believe it is the same problem
that is reported incomment

and that it has something to do with was is reported in

Attaching Xorg.0.log.old that was active at the latest lock-up.

When assigning a priority to a task in evolutions task list, evolution
suddenly crashes. I can repeat the chrash. After a varying number of
attempts to assign priorities it will eventually crash. Usally between
2-10 attempts are needed before it crashes.

[Bug 163544] Re: tracker search tool shows no results

2008-07-08 Thread Bengt Olsson
Confirm the behaviour. Did a re-index some time after hardy was
installed. It seems like the issue is not with tracker itself but with
the tracker-search-tool. By using the command line "tracker-search" you
can list the files that contains the search word, it is just that they
do not show up in the tracker-search-tool.

* For most search terms there are no results displayed (but there are hits)
* For some terms partial results are displayed
* For some terms all results are displayed

Maybe Affected package above should be "tracker-serach-tool" instead of
"tracker". Running hardy updated as of today.

[Bug 217151] Re: Epiphany prints blank pages

2008-06-19 Thread Bengt Olsson
Was to early again... The problem persists but what happens is that the
"Scale" parameter changes itself to 1 (%) even though the Epiphany
session starts out with 100 (%). Typically when the browser is started
and you do the first printout, "scale" is set to 100%. However, at the
next print attempt the "scale" parameter has changed itself to 1%.

The obvious workaround is to manually reset the "scale" parameter to
100% every time you print something. This is tedious however.

[Bug 217151] Re: Epiphany prints blank pages

2008-06-18 Thread Bengt Olsson
Yet some more soul-seeking... it seems that the problem for me (and
possibly at least krizz) is that my "Scale" option in the "Print..." >
"Page Setup" dialog was set to 1.0 % instead of 100%. This made all the
difference... Don't know why it is like that, I can't remember ever
having changed that, maybe Scale had another scale before... Anyway this
problem is solved for me now anyway.

Cheers! :)

[Bug 113981] Re: [apport] soffice.bin crashed with SIGFPE in SalDisplay::Init()

2007-10-21 Thread Bengt Olsson
Yes. Dies silently at start up. When starting in a shell I get the
following printout:

** (process:5874): WARNING **: Unknown error forking main binary /
abnormal early exit ...

When I unchecked the restricted driver and went back to the default
(radeon or ati or whatever is default) it works alright. Then switched
back to fglrx and the problem came back.

However I plan to do a clean installation since my installation was from
Gutsy Beta, using both the up-date manager and aptitude, and now it
seems like they are not quite in sync. Maybe the system is a little bit
screwed up. I'll report back after I performed a clean upgrade.

[Bug 112518] Re: Switch User freezes at blank screen

2007-10-06 Thread Bengt Olsson
No output at all from the strace command, even when sending SIGTERM or
SIGKILL to the gdm process that was eating cpu. However, the problem
went away when I installed xserver-xgl (gutsy). BTW I'm using fglrx
8.37.6 from the gutsy repos.

[Bug 112518] Re: Switch User freezes at blank screen

2007-10-06 Thread Bengt Olsson
When I switch from one user to another I get the black screen. Logging
in remotely I see that what I presume is a new gdm process consumes
almost all CPU:

root 5732 99.6 0.5 15312 6160 tty9 RLs+ 15:33 9:40
/usr/bin/X :20 -br -audit 0 -auth /var/lib/gdm/:20.Xauth -nolisten tcp
vt9

It is no problem otherwise to work on the box from a ssh session. But
when I try to kill the above process with "kill -9" the box hangs
completely, including the ssh session. Any other specific information
you want from the ssh session while in "hang state"?

[Bug 69008] Re: Clock applet updated time wrong when switching from summer time to normal time

2007-02-04 Thread Bengt Olsson
Using ntp. No other OS on the box.

It is not a big deal since time has worked fine ever since. I just
wanted to report it since it seemed like Edgy did not handle summer to
winter time transition right. However, if I'm the only one that have had
trouble you might as well close this TR.

Or wait until its time for winter/summer time transition...

[Bug 69008] Re: Clock applet updated time wrong when switching from summer time to normal time

2006-10-31 Thread Bengt Olsson
OK, here is the chain of events

1. Woke up Sunday Oct. 29, the day at which summer time is switched to
normal time in Europe (at 03:00). Computer has been switched off since
the evening before.

2. Switch on computer at about 09:30 local time.

3. Expected clock applet to show time 09:30, instead it showed time
02:30 which is 7 hours behind the correct time.

That's all. Then I manually adjusted the time to correct time from the
System > Administration > Time and Date dialog and now it is working
fine. I don't know to what extent time was screwed up in the computer as
a whole, but I suspect it was only the clock applet that showed wrong
time.

As said before the computer clock has been synchronized to the two servers
ntp.ubuntu.com
127.127.1.0
since installation of Ubuntu 6.10 on Thursday October 26.

[Bug 69008] Clock applet updated time wrong when switching from summer time to normal time

2006-10-29 Thread Bengt Olsson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

When I switched on the computer this morning the time was 7 hours off. instead
of 09:30 it showed 02:30. Time zone Europe/Stockholm and synchronizing to
servers
ntp.ubuntu.com
127.127.1.0
Unfortunately i checked the "date" cli command after I had manually adjusted
the applet clock from the System > Administration > Time and Date dialog, but
it shows the right time.

** Affects: gnome-applets (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Unconfirmed
