[Bug 1616912] [NEW] Can't drag & dropping files from HDD to USB key: Nautilus claims the key is read-only

2016-08-25 Thread Bruno Girin
Public bug reported:

When dragging and dropping files from my local disk to a connected USB
key, Nautilus claims that the key is read-only. Copying the same files
via the command line works.

Steps to reproduce:
- Plug in a USB key that has space on it and that is not write protected
- Drag and drop a file from an another device to the key in Nautilus

Expected result: the file is copied

Actual result: Nautilus shows an error window that claims the key is
read only (see screen shot)

Workaround: copy the files via the command line

[Bug 1559420] Re: plugin install fails in ubuntu/debian packaged version of vagrant (xenial)

2016-08-22 Thread Bruno Girin
This is still affecting me too. What is the process to get this
backported to xenial? Having vagrant broken in an LTS is not ideal.

[Bug 1615579] [NEW] Vagrant fails to bring up xenial64 instance on VirtualBox

2016-08-22 Thread Bruno Girin
Public bug reported:

When trying to bring up a local vagrant box using the official vagrant
ubuntu/xenial64 image, the process fails with the following error:

/sbin/ifdown eth1 2> /dev/null

Stdout from the command:

Stderr from the command:

sudo: unable to resolve host ubuntu-xenial
mesg: ttyname failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device

The "unable to resolve hostname" and "ttyname" problems can be fixed through
simple modification of a couple of files. However, because the default image
doesn't include those, vagrant is unable to bring up a box properly.

[Bug 1592365] [NEW] Juju 2.0 crashes on bootstrap with datacentred.co.uk OpenStack cloud

2016-06-14 Thread Bruno Girin
Public bug reported:

I use an OpenStack provider called Datacentred
(http://www.datacentred.co.uk/). I created a cloud config that I added
to Juju and when I bootstrap Juju, I get a go exception.

Steps to reproduce:
- juju add-cloud datacentred datacentred.yaml
- juju add-credentials datacentred (enter correct credentials at that point)
- juju bootstrap dc-test datacentred

This last command results in the following exception:
http://pastebin.com/aQFfnnuj

This is using Juju 2.0-beta8 on Xenial AMD64.

** Affects: juju-core (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1241986] Re: Cannot connect to WPA/WPA2, EAP-PEAP, MSCHAPV2 network

2015-04-16 Thread Bruno Girin
In order to add a bit of context, one example of a network that uses
PEAP is Eduroam, which is a Europe-wide university wi-fi network so
solvign this would make a lot of students happy. For reference, here are
the instructions given by UCL to their students for laptops:

Restarting ofono, as suggested in

[Bug 1174259] [NEW] Network Manager sometimes fails to reconnect to WPA protected wi-fi network

2013-04-29 Thread Bruno Girin
Public bug reported:

I regularly connect to two different wi-fi networks that use WPA/WPA2
Personal security. When the laptop accidentally loses connection to the
network, it sometimes fails to re-establish the connection and asks for
the password repeatedly. The only solution to fix that is to reboot.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Connect to a wi-fi network with WPA/WPA2 Personal security,
2. Accidentally lose connection (by moving around with the laptop for example),
3. Network Manager attempts to reconnects, fails and asks for the network's
password again,
4. Enter the password and click Connect,
5. Network Manager fails to connect and goes back to step 3.

Expected behaviour:
NM should reconnect without any issue.

Note that this would never happen with 12.10 on the same machine so it
looks like a regression.

[Bug 1173231] [NEW] Login screen sometimes fails to appear when booting computer

2013-04-26 Thread Bruno Girin
Public bug reported:

When booting my laptop, the screen alternates between the Ubuntu logo
and a black screen a couple of times before showing the login screen.
Occasionally, the login screen does not appear and a black screen with
just the mouse cursor appears instead.

give me pointers on how to investigate the problem.

Re: [Bug 1165813] Re: Kernel driver not installed (error in suplibOsInit) when starting VM

2013-04-19 Thread Bruno Girin
Hi Gianni,

Thanks for the suggestion but it doesn't seem to fix it for me :-( In
any case, you shouldn't have to install the -source package for the app
to work.

Cheers,

Bruno

[Bug 1170346] [NEW] Desktop freeze during update followed by boot problem and xorg crash

2013-04-18 Thread Bruno Girin
Public bug reported:

I'm not sure this is the correct package nor whether it's a single bug
but I'm happy to analyse further if someone can help me do so. I just
did an apt-get dist-upgrade on my machine and here's what happened:

1. Ran sudo apt-get update  sudo apt-get dist-upgrade;
2. At the point of setting up man DB, fans starts spinning up, unity locks up
(apart from the mouse pointer); this seems to have been happening recently as a
result of GPU lock ups;
3. CTRL+ATL+F2, logged in via console to force a reboot;
4. Laptop attempted to close processes but never managed to do so (while fan
stayed on full speed);
5. Forcefully shut down the laptop;
6. On restart, I get a screen displayed saying that the system is on low
graphics mode;
7. CTRL+ALT+F2 again to reboot;
8. Reboot happens as expected and I can log in to Unity;
9. A few seconds after login, apport fires up reporting an XOrg crash.

The /var/log directory contains a number of apport log files that all
look something like:

ERROR: apport (pid 1556) Thu Apr 18 13:53:22 2013: called for pid 1381, signal 6

[Bug 1170356] [NEW] External screen on mini-DisplayPort no longer detected

2013-04-18 Thread Bruno Girin
Public bug reported:

My laptop has a mini-DisplayPort and an HDMI port to which I can connect
external monitors. When I plug it in into the HDMI port, it is properly
recognised but when I plug it into the mini-DisplayPort, Unity fails to
recognise the display. This used to work in 12.10.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Plug in the external display to the HDMI port via an HDMI adapter: the Unity
display extends to the second monitor
2. Plug the same display to the mini-DisplayPort adapter: the screen stay blank
3. Open System Settings - Displays: the external monitor is no detected.

I also have the same symptoms as Lorenzo (comment #8) regarding low

show the issue.

This is probably related to defects #1055159 and #1086831. However, it
seems to happen in a different frame than the other two and under
different conditions.

I am using Eclipse 3.8 on Raring.

Chris, I can't find the TLB Invalidate bug. Can you link to it from this

[Bug 1157649] Re: GPU hang

2013-03-23 Thread Bruno Girin
Just in case that's useful, here's my i915_error_state too. I understand
that it's fixed in Raring but Raring has not been released yet so for
all users who do not fancy upgrading to a pre-release version, is there
a way to backport the fix? The reason I ask is because the bug is really
debilitating on those machines that are affected.

[Bug 1157649] Re: GPU hang

2013-03-21 Thread Bruno Girin
Chris, is there a possibility to backport the fix to Quantal? It really
makes the computer difficult to use as it hangs every few minutes, in
particular when scrolling. This has been happening to me since the
kernel update on Wednesday 20th March (when this bug was first
reported).

What info is required to diagnose the problem? I'm happy to do as much
investigation and digging as necessary to find the root cause.

[Bug 1070229] [NEW] Twitter account loses access periodically

2012-10-23 Thread Bruno Girin
Public bug reported:

I've had a Twitter account set up in Ubuntu Online Accounts since I
installed Quantal beta 2. Since a couple of days ago, the account loses
access and access has to be granted again. It then works for a variable
amount of time until it loses access again and the shutdown menu in
the top panel turns red to tell me there is a problem with online
accounts.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Set up a Twitter account and authorise it,
2. Close Ubuntu Online Accounts,
3. After a variable amount of time, the shutdown menu in the top right of the
screen turns red, Online Accounts is highlighted,
4. Click on Online Accounts: the Twitter account shows an error mark next to it
and a message saying access needs to be granted appear,
5. Grant access to the account,
6. Repeat at step 3.

[Bug 1061227] [NEW] Cannot select text reliably with the mouse in OpenOffice Writer

2012-10-03 Thread Bruno Girin
Public bug reported:

When in LibreOffice Writer, text selection with the mouse will sometimes
work, sometimes not and is generally unreliable.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open a Writer document in OpenOffice,
2. Press the left mouse on a piece of text and keep pressed,
3. Start dragging the mouse to select a piece of text.

Expected behaviour:
The selected text is highlighted until you release the mouse button.

Actual behaviour:
More often than not, the text will stop being highlighted sometime during the
drag, often when the drag goes over a word boundary but not always.

[Bug 1009883] [NEW] Compiz crashes when window moved to second monitor for first time after additional monitor plugged in

2012-06-07 Thread Bruno Girin
Public bug reported:

When plugging in an external monitor while logged in, the first time a
window is moved from the primary monitor to the secondary one, Compiz
crashes.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Log in with second monitor disconnected
2. Open an application (e.g. terminal)
3. Connect second monitor: the desktop is then extended to the new monitor
4. Grab the window opened in #2 and drag it to the second monitor

At the point where the window is between the two monitors, Unity hangs
for a second and Compiz crashes

[Bug 998239] Re: Login screen forces same resolution on all displays in non-identical multi-display setup

Hi Sebastien, it is the default Ubuntu greeter. Disconnecting and re-
connecting the external display while on the greeter fixes the problem
(at least temporarily, I haven't rebooted yet).

[Bug 998239] [NEW] Login screen forces same resolution on all displays in non-identical multi-display setup

2012-05-11 Thread Bruno Girin
Public bug reported:

In a multi-display setup where displays have different resolutions (e.g.
external display connected to laptop), the login screen forces the same
resolution on both displays. For example in my setup I have a laptop
with a 16:9 ratio and an external screen with a 4:3 ratio. The
background appears on both displays and the login box appears on the
laptop's built-in display. However, both displays are forced to a 4:3
resolution that only fits the external screen.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Connect an external display to a laptop with different ratio (e.g. 16:9
laptop and 4:3 external display)
2. Start the laptop
3. The login screen appears

Expected behaviour:
Each display shows an image that is scaled according to their individual
resolutions

Actual behaviour:
Both displays are forced to a degraded resolution that can be displayed by
both. E.g. in my case the laptop has a max resolution of 1366x768 while the
external display has a max resolution of 1280x1024: the resolution used by the
login screen is 1024x768 i.e. a 4:3 resolution (like the external display) but
with 768 vertical resolution (which is the max vertical resolution of the
laptop).

[Bug 997795] [NEW] When plugging in an external screen, windows start opening on the external rather than the built in screen

2012-05-10 Thread Bruno Girin
Public bug reported:

When I plug in an external screen to my laptop, using the mini Display
Port, some windows open on the external screen by default while others
open on the main laptop screen. For example, Thunderbird will open on
the laptop screen while the System Settings will open on the external
screen. This can get even more weird with dialogue boxes: for example,
when reporting this bug, the first apport dialogue box opened on the
external screen, while the second one opened on the laptop's screen and
the third opened on the external screen again!

Steps to reproduce:
1. Login to the laptop with no external screens attached.
2. Connect an external screen using the mini display port.
3. Open System Settings: the window opens on the external screen.
4. Open an application like Thunderbird: the window opens on the laptop's
screen.

Expected behaviour:
Behaviour should be consistent and all windows should open on the same screen
unless explicitly moved to another screen by the user. In particular, when
using a laptop, the laptop's built in screen should be the preferred display.
Another rule to consider would be to always prefer the display that was
connected when the user session was started in cases when a new display was
connected during a user session.

[Bug 997798] [NEW] Application appears on different screen after wake up from suspend in multi-screen setup

2012-05-10 Thread Bruno Girin
Public bug reported:

When having an external screen connected to my laptop, maximised
application windows sometimes appear on a different screen when waking
up from suspend than they were prior to suspend.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Connect an external screen.
2. Start an application, e.g. Thunderbird and ensure it is open and maximised
on the laptop's screen.
3. Suspend the laptop e.g. by closing the lid.
4. Wake up from suspend.

Expected behaviour:
The application window should appear on the same screen and in the same place
as it was prior to suspend.

Actual behaviour:
The application window appears on the external screen on waking up from suspend.
Un-maximising the window revert it back to the laptop's screen and maximising
it again keeps it on the laptop's screen rather than the external one.

[Bug 997803] [NEW] Unlock screen uses wrong geometry when resuming from suspend in multi-display setting

2012-05-10 Thread Bruno Girin
Public bug reported:

When connecting an external screen to my laptop, when I suspend the
laptop and resume, the unlock screen is presented on the laptop's main
display but using the geometry of the external display.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Connect an external display that has a different resolution than the
built-in laptop's display.
2. Suspend the laptop, e.g. by closing the lid.
3. Wake up the laptop.
4. The unlock screen asking for a password is displayed on the laptop's
built-in display.

Expected behaviour:
The unlock screen uses the resolution of the display where it appears, i.e. the
laptop's display.

Actual behaviour:
The unlock screen uses the resolution of the external display while appearing
on the laptop's built-in display.
Once the password is entered, resolution reverts to what it should be.

[Bug 991912] [NEW] Confusing button labelling on disk eject dialogue

2012-04-30 Thread Bruno Girin
Public bug reported:

When burning a CD ISO to an physical CD using a CD drive that does not
support software eject, Brasero displays a message dialogue asking the
user to manually eject the CD from the drive (see attached screen shot).
Although the message is reasonably clear, there is only one button in
this dialogue labelled Cancel. This is extremely confusing as it
suggests that clicking that button will cancel the just finished write
operation. Furthermore, the dialogue offers no alternative action that
would make sense. A better wording for this button would be Done.
Close should be avoided as users may wonder whether this closes the
drive or the dialogue.

Steps to reproduce
1. Download an ISO (e.g. Ubuntu server 12.04);
2. Burn the ISO using Brasero and a CD drive that cannot be opened via software;
3. The dialogue appears with its confusing Cancel button.

[Bug 888943] Re: jbossas4 version 4.2.3.GA-6 failed to build with openjdk-7

2012-04-30 Thread Bruno Girin
Considering JBoss AS is currently at version 7, what is the rationale
for keeping v4 in the repos? And wouldn't it be easier to upgrade to a
more recent version? Note that I am a noob in packaging to this question

[Bug 967056] Re: The privacy section should be renamed, oneiric users think confidential data is sent because there is no option to inhibit this

2012-04-09 Thread Bruno Girin
To add to Colin's comments, here are a few suggestions for improvement
on the privacy settings screen:

The Recent Items, Files and Applications tabs all deal with data
that is stored locally for indexing, while the Diagnostics tab is the
only one that deals with data that can potentially be sent to Canonical.
This should be clarified.

The wording on the first tab is very vague:
Forget activities:
Every time a file or an application is used, some information can be stored.
This activity can be used to retrieve files during searches or as history in
applications

A more precise wording could help clarify (avoid using can, replace the vague
activity by data, explain the indexing and clarify that it is stored
locally), such as:
Every time a file or an application is used, some data is stored and indexed
on your own computer. This data is then used to retrieve files during searches
or as history in applications.

You could then expand on this (not sure how correct the following is but you
get the gist):
This indexed data helps speed up searches and find recently used documents
again but it uses a certain amount of disk space and could provide valuable
information on your activity should your computer become lost or stolen. Ubuntu
allows you to decide how much is logged.

On the File tab, it would be good to explain the impact of checking any
of the options: e.g. if I click Image, does it mean that I will be
unable to find images anymore, will it restrict image searches or just
slow them down? At the moment, users are faced with 9 check boxes, some
are obvious file types, some seem to be application types + an empty box
below but have no way to understand what would be the impact of changing
any of those settings.

Same comment for the Applications tab.

Also, it would be good to have consistent wording. The Recent Items
tab talks of *storing* information or activity while the File tab says
*record* activity and the Applications tab says *log* activity.

On the Diagnostics tab, make it clear that by default Ubuntu does not
send any information to Canonical but that sending crash information is
a great way to notify the developers of a problem so that it can get
fixed and that it will not be used for any other purpose.

[Bug 971828] Re: Shotwell cannot resolve gexiv2_initialize symbol

2012-04-02 Thread Bruno Girin
I realised after filing this bug that I probably had a locally compiled
version of gexiv2 so I removed the locally compiled library and tried to
run Shotwell again, at which point I got this error:

$ shotwell
shotwell: error while loading shared libraries: libgexiv2.so.0: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory

And indeed, if I check the libraries installed on the machine, here is
what I get:

$ ls /usr/lib | grep gexiv
libgexiv2.a
libgexiv2.so
libgexiv2.so.1
libgexiv2.so.1.0.0

[Bug 963093] Re: Unity 5.8: Flickering and corruption on Unity UI elements

2012-03-24 Thread Bruno Girin
Screencast attached of trying workarounds in #13.
Force complete redraw on initial damage is checked by default.
At the start, you can see flickering and an issue with the top menu shadow.
When Force full screen redraws (buffer swap) on repaint is checked, the
shadow issue disappears but the flickering remains.
One thing that the video doesn't show is the flickering of the top menu as well
as some flickering in the start panel. So it looks like those flickering issues
happen in a part of the rendering that is done after Kazam picks up the stream.

[Bug 963562] [NEW] The network manager app icon shows it disconnected when it is successfully connected to wi-fi

2012-03-23 Thread Bruno Girin
Public bug reported:

The network manager application indicator shows the computer as
disconnected from the network even though it is successfully connected
to a known wi-fi network and can access the internet as normal. This
happens in Unity 2D.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Start a Unity session in range of a well-known wi-fi network,
2. The computer connects to the wi-fi network but the application indicator
stays greyed out,
3. Start a web browser,
4. Go to any URL in the browser to confirm that internet access works,
5. The browser displays the content of the URL.

Expected behaviour:
In step 2, the application indicator's status should be consistent with the
connection status.

This is not actually a problem with the shotwell package, this is a problem
with unity-scope-shotwell which is in the scope packagers PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~scopes-packagers/+archive/ppa
Subscribing the Scopes Packagers team as I can't find how to associate the bug
with a package that is not in Ubuntu yet.

[Bug 946546] [NEW] Mobile broadband cannot be resumed after suspending laptop

2012-03-04 Thread Bruno Girin
Public bug reported:

After suspending my laptop while mobile broadband was connected and
resuming, the mobile broadband connection doesn't come back up and I
need to log out and log back in again to be able to use it again. This
is a mobile broadband connection on Vodafone contract using a data SIM
with the Lenovo X1 built-in 3G.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Connect to mobile broadband
2. Suspend the computer (e.g. by closing the lid)
3. Resume the session (e.g. by opening the lid and unlocking the computer)
4. Mobile broadband does not reconnect
5. Open network menu to re-connect: two entries are shown under Mobile
Broadband: one that is enabled, one that is greyed out
6. Click on the enabled entry under Mobile Broadband
7. A notification bubble appears saying that mobile broadband is disconnected;
the entries in the network menu revert to the normal entries before step 1 above
8. Open the network menu again and click on the mobile broadband provider:
entries in the menu revert to the state in step 5 and mobile broadband does not
connect

Expected behaviour:
Mobile broadband should do one of:
1. automatically reconnect in step 4, or
2. fully disconnect to revert to a clean state
Option 2 ensures that the machine does not automatically reconnect to a network
connection that may cost money and gives the chance to connect to wi-fi
instead. Alternatively a configuration option in the connection settings to
allow option 1 or 2 (same as what MeeGo Harmattan does) would work.

[Bug 932375] Re: gedit crashed with SIGSEGV in instance_get_window()

2012-02-15 Thread Bruno Girin
I added the gedit-valencia-plugin package as the retrace shows it
crashed in libvalencia. In addition, the fact that it crashed in
instance_active_document_is_vala_file() may be a hint: as far as I
remember I did not have any document open when the crash occured.

** Also affects: gedit-valencia-plugin (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

[Bug 931734] [NEW] Colour calibration: package shared-color-targets isn't available when calibrating webcam

2012-02-13 Thread Bruno Girin
Public bug reported:

When trying to calibrate a webcam in the Colour system settings, the
wizard tries to install a package called shared-color-targets but this
package is not available.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open system settings;
2. Select Colour;
3. Select the webcam (see attached screenshot);
4. Click Calibrate...;
5. Click Continue;
6. Select Quick and click Continue;
7. Click Continue again; the next page proposes to install common colour
target files;
8. Click Install Now; another dialogue box opens that suggest installing the
package shared-color-targets;
9. Click Install.

Actual behaviour
An error message appears saying that the package is not available.

Expected behaviour
The package is installed and the user can continue calibrating the camera.

[Bug 930938] [NEW] Kinetic 2-finger scrolling no longer works after upgrade to 12.04

2012-02-12 Thread Bruno Girin
Public bug reported:

I upgraded to 12.04 yesterday and just realised that kinetic 2-finger
scrolling no longer works with my touchpad.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Go to System Setting / Mouse and Touchpad
2. Click on the Touchpad tab
3. Set scrolling to Two Finger Scrolling
4. Close the settings
5. Open a document that requires scrolling (e.g. long web page in Firefox, long
text file in Gedit, etc)
6. Scroll through the document using two fingers on the touchpad

Expected behaviour
When scrolling, the page should keep scrolling up or down when the fingers are
taken off the touchpad and stop on its own.

Actual behaviour
Scrolling stops dead as soon as fingers are taken off the touchpad, making it
quite cumbersome to scroll through long documents.

Alternative expected behaviour
Have an option to enable kinetic scrolling in the touchpad settings.
