[Bug 332945] Re: [Jaunty] Update Notifier icon would provide useful status information
Paulo J. S. Silva : About updates in the indicator applet: I've been working on a proof-of- concept that does just that. It currently implements indicator messages for updates and needing to reboot. [Bug 332945] Re: [Jaunty] Update Notifier icon would provide useful status information
mac_v: Ah, I should update that screenshot. The list of updates is generated by a modified version of apt-check, a python script included with update-notifier. The modification is now able to associate each updated package with an installed metapackage (such as 'ubuntu-desktop', 'kubuntu-desktop' or 'linux-generic') or, failing that, a package name that can be installed be the add/remove application. Thus, the user will only see updates for the base OS or things they will have installed manually. I'm told the modifications to apt-check at least will be going into karmic - what, if anything, will use them is currently up in the air. -- [Jaunty] Update Notifier icon would provide useful status information https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/332945 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 357846] Re: [Jaunty] Updating every seven days is inimical to the process of turning a beta system into a production system.
Thanks for commenting. I realise I submitted this a little late for Jaunty, but I think it's still a worthwhile thing to consider, especially for Karmic. It all boils down to what most of the people using pre-release Ubuntu distributions are doing. Some of them are, of course, going to be very proactive about testing and bug reporting and running updates manually multiple times a day. I've been in that group before and doubtless will be again; it all depends on how much time I can spare. For this release, I'm in the other group: I want to submit bugs and get testing done, but I don't currently have a lot of time to dedicate to it. So I installed Jaunty as soon as it was stable enough not to be unusable (on my primary laptop, but only after the secondary system was fully synced and ready just in case) and started using it. I've kept this system updated manually roughly every three to four days, but that's not been often enough to submit decent bugs for some of the problems I've had. I'd be very surprised if I were alone in doing this. It sounds like you don't actually know the figures yourself - which would suggest that the *safest* option is the shorter period. -- [Jaunty] Updating every seven days is inimical to the process of turning a beta system into a production system. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/357846 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 357846] [NEW] [Jaunty] Updating every seven days is inimical to the process of turning a beta system into a production system.
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: update-manager On Jaunty, the new update manager policy is to start the update-manager no more often than every seven days. Regardless of viewpoints on this currently very contentious issue, the prompt period should be much shorter while active development and bug fixing are expected on the release. Because of this policy, I have not been able to submit any crash reports for two weeks due to outdated packages; by the time a bug happens, I no longer have the latest versions of some package and the bug report tool refuses to let me submit. With the previous system, which informed the user whenever there were updates, this was a very rare occurrence. It is now constant. Perhaps - until release only - we could have a more frequent check? ** Affects: update-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- [Jaunty] Updating every seven days is inimical to the process of turning a beta system into a production system. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/357846 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 332945] Re: [Jaunty] Removal of Update Notifier is WRONG
Brian: Yes, I think that's the main problem. According the spec, update-manager should be a morphing window by the time this piece of work is finished, right? That will solve pretty much all of the problems relating to it becoming a pop-up, I believe. I expect we'll end up needing to file a few usability bugs to get it all sorted and user- friendly - for instance, it's not currently a morphing window and if a partial upgrade is needed, it pops up a *focussed* window. If these aren't currently being sorted, they should be bugs... but they're not as important as the loss of passive information in *this* bug. The basic regression, then, is thus: 1) No *continuous* reminder that a reboot or log-out is necessary. A pop-up window is a terrible thing for this: If it can't be closed, it's a constant annoyance. If it can, it's not continuous! 2) No policy for what happens if the user closes the update-manager window after it pops up. Do we really want to leave them a day (presumably) when there are security updates? Or another week if there are upgrades? The lack of some continuous reminder is a regression. There are other issues with the *current state* of the new system which should be split out into new bugs - but those aren't regressions. -- [Jaunty] Removal of Update Notifier is WRONG https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/332945 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 332945] Re: [Jaunty] Removal of Update Notifier is WRONG
(bear with me on this one; I'm stuck at home ill, so this may be less coherent than would be ideal) I can think of a few use-cases where the new implementation may/will cause problems as it's currently laid out: Problems relating to the window being opened for you: 1) If it appears at the bottom of the Z-buffer, it might be behind a long-running application such as Firefox. It may even appear behind a long-running application on a virtual desktop the user doesn't visit often; it's entirely possible that the window won't be noticed for days or weeks. 2) If it appears at the top of the Z-buffer, it will be distracting to the user; it's supposed to appear unfocussed, but what if the user has focus-follows-mouse? Will the window appear under the cursor, steal focus and (if the user happens to be typing at that moment) immediately start updating packages? 3) There's no single place to look to know you're up-to-date. In fact, for the average user, there will be no simple way to know they're up to date at all. It seems to be a harsher user interface - and thus it fails to follow the principle of least astonishment. (windows appearing when you don't expect them is astonishing; *notifications* appearing when you don't expect them is... expected!) Some thoughts on mitigation: 1) could be mitigated partially by making the window appear on all workspaces. 2) open at the bottom of the Z-buffer. Any other solution is still going to cause unwelcome astonishment sometime, with some (common) sets of options. Some thoughts that might, possibly, help: The new design specifies two different concepts of notification: informational and demanding: Informational notification is ephemeral and can vanish quickly; it should never need a response. demanding notifications must have a response within a short time limit, so they pop up a window grabbing attention. I have to say, I very much like that... but I can see a third class of notifications that are not covered at all. Patient ones: something that needs a response but has a very long time limit. It seems that we're trying to force all notifications of this type into one of the other two, and this doesn't work well in all cases - such as this one. Icons in the taskbar *without* a bubble would be perfect for this: They call attention, but they don't demand it *now*. Based on some logic, they can be converted into a demanding notification later, if there's a good opportunity or a time limit is approaching. What would be really nice for the specific example of the update notifier is this: 1) When there's any update, assign a passive time limit (~30 minutes for security updates, ~2 weeks for upgrades). Pop up an icon in the taskbar that will launch or focus update-manager. Do *NOT* notify in any other way; hover text for the icon should be a nice, frendly explanation of what's up. 2) automatically convert to a demanding notification on login or (if the passive time limit is more than half used) when the system has been idle for some sane pre-determined time - 5 minutes, say. Having the window ready when you come *back* to the computer is much less astonishing than having it suddenly break your workflow. 3) if the passive time limit expires, convert to a demanding notification. (Now I re-read this, I realise this is too long and details for this place; I'm posting it so I don't lose it but I'll copy it elsewhere as soon as I can) -- [Jaunty] Removal of Update Notifier is WRONG https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/332945 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 327190] Re: User Crontab is outside of GUI session
Hi, It is actually possible for programs run from cron to acquire settings from the GUI; it's just rather arcane and tricky to make it reliable. Making it automatic would be possible, but probably require some additional work. If you just want something that will work *NOW*, you can find directions here: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-105250.html - note that this will fail randomly if you have more than one user logged in (or in any case where you're the not the first person to log in). [Bug 327458] Re: [regression][intrepid] NFS mounts not attempted with idle network interface
I think I see what's up: From the interfaces(5) manual page: Lines beginning with the word auto are used to identify the physical interfaces to be brought up when ifup is run with the -a option. (This option is used by the system boot scripts.) And Lines beginning with allow- are used to identify interfaces that should be brought up automatically by various subsytems. According to that, you actually have conflicting options: You're saying that usb0 should be brought up automatically at boottime (regardless of its existence) *and* that it should be brought up automatically by hotplug. Would you mind trying without 'auto usb0'? If it works, good. [Bug 327494] [NEW] [Jaunty] Update Manager's display of package update information is misleading
Public bug reported: The update-manager window includes a display telling you when the package information was last updated; however, this display is static. Ubuntu is configured to regularly update package information, but an open update-manager window will never notice this. This can lead to obviously wrong data, as in the attached screenshot. What's worse, if you click the tray icon informing you that there are updates, the update-manager is merely refocussed... and still says there are no updates. This is misleading and causes confusion. To be clear: I expect: The update-manager window to update when the system's package information has been updated, telling me what packages are ready to be installed What happened: The update-manager window never updates unless manually told to, assuring users that there are no updates just because they left the update-manager window open. Hi, Can you please include the output of ip route? [Bug 326797] Re: Firefox made a weird CACHE problem.
Hi, In Ubuntu, the filesystems are mounted with an option that tells the kernel to automatically make them read-only when there's an error detected. This is to prevent any (further) damage to your files. Such an error could be a sign of hardware failure, a random bit error (random bit errors are rare, but unavoidable; statistically, with many of the large drives on sale today, you would expect to get one random bit error if you ever read the entire disk). It may even be a kernel filesystem bug, although that's less likely. I'm going to mark this bug as incomplete for now; if you get more errors, we can try to determine if it's hardware or software. [Bug 110636] Re: hdparm - cannot set dma on IDE hard drive that works via pata
Since it's now almost certainly too late to fix in Gutsy, I've added the hardy kernel as 'Incomplete'. I've also done a little research into the problem; it appears to be a known problem with libata and certain chipsets: http://linux-ata.org/faq.html#combined The link above suggests several remedies to the problem: * Recommended (where BIOS permits): Change BIOS IDE mode from legacy or combined mode to AHCI (recommended), RAID or native. * Boot with the kernel commandline parameter combined_mode=libata or combined_mode=ide to allow the specified driver to claim all IDE ports. * Disable libata (CONFIG_ATA) entirely, and enable CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE_SATA. * (newer choice, with less field testing) Disable CONFIG_IDE, and permit libata to run all your IDE and SATA ports. What we need now is confirmation that these workarounds - *particularly* the recommended one - work with the bug. Since Hardy is now the development version, it would be most helpful to receive notification that the bug is still present *IN HARDY*, *AFTER* the fixes are in place - although I'm sure we'd prefer to hear that this *does* fix it. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Sourcepackagename: linux-source-2.6.24 = linux Status: New = Incomplete -- hdparm - cannot set dma on IDE hard drive that works via pata https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/110636 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 132727] Re: There is no gmailfs.py package
Hi, thanks for the bug report. gmailfs.py appears to have been renamed as mount.gmailfs in the package. This is to fit in with policy; all filesystems that require userspace programs should provide a mount.filesystem command. Follow the instructions in the mount.gmailfs manpage and you shouldn't have any more trouble. If you want to add the mount to /etc/fstab, I suggest a line like this: none/mountpoint gmailfs username=gmailuser, password=gmailpass, fsname=zOlRRa 0 0 -- There is no gmailfs.py package https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/132727 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 131476] Re: esd not found
The package causing this on Gnome *is* gnome-session. gnome-session is the only thing in /usr on my new Gutsy install that contains any reference to esd. Here's proof: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo grep -r /usr/bin/esd /usr/ 2- Binary file /usr/bin/x-session-manager matches Binary file /usr/bin/gnome-session matches Binary file /usr/X11R6/bin/x-session-manager matches Binary file /usr/X11R6/bin/gnome-session matches [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ Evidently, there's a similar problem on KDE - probably the same legacy code or missing dependancy. [Bug 132159] Re: GeForce4 Ti 4200 AGP8X 128Mb: Wrong NVIDIA driver in nvidia-glx (9631 instead of newer 9639)
The latest nvidia-glx driver used anywhere in Ubuntu is 9631 (the absolute latest is 9755, in the nvidia-glx-new driver). Later versions simply haven't been packaged into Ubuntu yet; it's at least probable that, unless there are issues with it, the 9639 driver will get into Gutsy (7.10) before it's released, but that probably won't be officially backported to Fiesty - usually, the only backports after a distribution is released are bugfixes and security updates. You've attached this bug to linux-restricted-modules-2.6.22 which is the version in Gutsy, not Feisty - is this a mistake, or are you using Gutsy packages in Feisty? -- GeForce4 Ti 4200 AGP8X 128Mb: Wrong NVIDIA driver in nvidia-glx (9631 instead of newer 9639) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/132159 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

This is actually a Flash problem - YouTube uses Flash to play video. The actual problem is that Flash grabs control of the keyboard, overruling all web browser shortcuts. [Bug 131530] 'Browse device...' in the bluetooth applet is useless without gnome-vfs-obexftp
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: bluez-gnome Information: The Gnome Bluetooth applet finally has a feature which scans for and allows you to connect to devices. However, the only method of connection it supports is obex, which is not supported by Ubuntu by default. Trying to connect to any of the devices shown brings up an error message complaining about the lack of Obex support. Steps to reproduce: Install Gutsy on a machine with a supported bluetooth device Make sure the bluetooth applet is running Right click on the bluetooth applet and select Browse device... Make sure a bluetooth device is in range, then try to connect to it. Resolution: Adding a dependency on gnome-vfs-obexftp would solve this issue.
