Kernel 4.15 enables keyboard backlight control for me (GL553VE). No more
kernel patching needed.

2017-09-14 Thread Cabalbl4
Shoumik Chowdhury (shoumikchow), I'd rather not. This patch is nothing
more than a model-dependent hack, which, most likely, will generate
problems on non-Asus models. Maybe a good kernel module programmer can
have a look there to make it work everywhere.

I have prepared a patch to original 4.12 kernel, which enables
backlight/F3/F3 keys. It works on my GL553VE machine. All other buttons
are working in 4.12.

The original patch is posted int the kernel topic

The kernel with my changes and ubuntu patches can be found here (in case
someone lies to test it):

[Bug 1662316] [NEW] Asus GL553VE laptop keyboard backlight uncontrollable and Fn keys not working

2017-02-06 Thread Cabalbl4
Public bug reported:

There are problems with Asus GL553VE laptop Fn buttons and keyboard backlight
1) Keyboard backlight uncontrollable
2) Most FN keys don't work

There is no way to control keyboard backlight at all (already tried all
possible ways found in internet)

Missing /sys/class/leds/asus::kbd_backlight (asus-nb-wmi modprobed)

try all possible variants with acpi_osi and acpi_backlight from forum -
no effect.

Install kernel 4.9 and even 4.10 latest RC - no effect (only got control
over airplane led).

Keyboard backlight is always on or always off (last state from windows)
Fn keys not working:
F1(Zz Suspend) F2(Airplane) F3(Kb brightness down) F4(Kb brightness up)
F5(Brightness down) F6(Brightness up) F7(Screen dim) F9(Touchpad disable)
Workjng: Sound Mute + - (F10 F11 F12)

Monitor backlight working fine by using menu slider.

Tested on open and proprietary drivers from latest ppas

[Bug 727620] Re: [Radeon HD 5650 and 5470] Kernel BUG during recovery boot and in normal boot (Hybrid graphics)

2012-06-08 Thread Cabalbl4
As far as I understand it has time racing condition between intel and
radeon modules. And it may be related with vgaswitcheroo too. On
earlyer versions of ubuntu changing the waiting time and the gfx mode in
grub seemed to affect the bug somehow. Some combination of that even
maked it disappear :)

Can confirm this bug for acer Timeline x 3820 TG. There was a workaround for
bluetooth in 11.04, but it does not work in 12.04 anymore.
I have tried DSDT table fix, firmware downgrade, acer_wmi blacklist - nothing
works - bluetooth stays disabled. Problem presists with latest kernel:

2011-10-30 Thread Cabalbl4
The bug is back now for me (( The thing I have done before to make it gone -
pass nosplash instead of quiet splash in grub and enable option
GRUB_TERMINAL=console and GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x768
Now i have reverted these options - and the bug is back for me on Natty
2.6.38-10-generic.
So it seems to be graphical-mode related. (Maybe plymouth - dependable?)

Now reverting back to working options.

Well, as far as I understood now, it is somehow related to cable plug,
but not all the times. Maybe it affects module load or something.

I will try to use fwts soon.

@Seth Forshee to get things clear about the cable. I never tried to
plug/unplug cable in the boot process. I have only booted with cable
already plugged in or unplugged.

[Bug 269253] Re: ath5k with AR5424 fails at startup or resume

2011-01-16 Thread Cabalbl4
BTW I have noticed that this message,
ath5k phy0: noise floor calibration timeout (2412MHz), appears at the kernel
2.6.31-22 in karmic, esp. when transferring large files. It appears most on
Ad-Hoc network (I may be wrong), but does not trigger disconnect as it is on
later kernels. However, it seems that the network speed is drastically
decreasing when it appears.

[Bug 591418] [NEW] gnome-power-manager fails to control LCD brightness, while FN keys work normally (Toshiba satellite A210P)

2010-06-08 Thread Cabalbl4
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Toshiba satellite A210P with ATI graphic card, running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS kernel
2.6.31-10-rt (kernel 2.6.32 also affected).
issue in gnome-power-manager 2.30.0-0ubuntu1
After installing omnibook module (for bluetooth) and proprietary ATI driver
gnome-power-manager cannot read and change LCD brightness. The applet slider is
stuck at the upper position. Brightness can only be changed by pressing Fn
keys. In karmic, everything worked fine.

The keys can be disabled by modprobe -r video. However, the situation with
g-p-m remains.
Blacklisting omnibook did not solve the issue.

cat /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness
returns:
levels: 0 10 20 30 40 50 60 70
current: 70

Trying to echo anything to /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness fails
with access denied error, even as superuser.

Dmesg after pressing Fn keys returns:

[Bug 269253] Re: ath5k with AR5424 fails at startup or resume

2010-06-08 Thread Cabalbl4
I spent a lot of time with that problem after upgrade to lucid from
karmic. When my Toshiba Satellite is powered on without ac charge this
problem appears until reboot with battery disconnect. It renders laptop
wlan unusable on battery power.

A list of my activities for the past week:

Trying to install latest atheros (ath5k) drivers from repos
(linux-backports-modules-wireless-lucid-generic
) - failure (problem persists) (kernel 2.6.31 - 2.6.32)
Trying to build latest stable drivers from source (http://linuxwireless.org/) -
failure (Tried all builds avaliable there at the moment in compat section)
(problem persists)(kernel 2.6.31 - 2.6.32)
Trying to upgrade kernel (2.6.34 and 2.6.35rc) - failure (problem persists)
Trying to build driver on upgraded kernel - failure (problem persists)
Trying to install a fresh installation of lucid (formating partition with
upgraded version and installing lucid from scratch) - failure (problem
persists) (kernel 2.6.31 - 2.6.32)
Trying to force kernel downgrade to 2.6.31-rt via synaptic (as a last hope) -
success! Problem disappeared at generic driver with no need to build anything
more.

Conclusion - 100% 2.6.32 and higher kernel issue.
