[Bug 1779933] Re: Unable to log in through guest network captive portal

[Bug 1262637] [NEW] System hangs on login immediately after logout
Public bug reported: We're running Ubuntu 12.04. The bug occurs with a number of PC running a kiosk-like setup with password-free login. The desktop is standard Unity. Scenario: * User arrives at PC in library. * User finds active session and wants to log out to get a fresh session. * User logs out * User *immediately* presses button to login * System hangs. The system hanging is like this: Desktop icons are present, but the launcher is gone, and the top bar with the time and command menus (including the logout menu) is also gone. The only way out (bar hitting the power button) is to enter CTRL-ALT- DEL, which opens a logout dialog. You can now choose to logout, wait a while and login again. It *seems* to be caused by the very swift sequence of logout + login. It's annoying and thus a serious bug, since it's very confusing to transient users, of which we have a lot. ** Affects: ubuntu-meta (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: 12.04 freeze ** Package changed: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) = ubuntu-meta (Ubuntu) ** Tags added: 12.04 ** Tags added: freeze -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1262637 Title: System hangs on login immediately after logout To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-meta/+bug/1262637/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1073114] Re: Shopping Lens Does Not Respect User Privacy
Thanks to Mike Davis for the summary. I'd just like to add that I really hope to see this issue fixed in 13.04. As a formerly very active member of the Ubuntu LoCo and present free software activist, I really don't feel I can recommend Ubuntu 12.10 to anyone as long as this bug stands. It's a betrayal of the values that formerly led me to support Ubuntu and struggle to get the word out to people, and after 12.04 (which is an excellent system BTW) I may well have to start recommending that people use Trisquel or Debian instead of Ubuntu. As a user, my strong feeling is that if my computer is to search for anything online it's because *I* ask it to, explicitly. If Amazon search is opt-out not opt-in, a very basic trust is betrayed. While a genuine privacy concern is standing, also note that the Ubuntu brand IS being tarnished. A lot of valuable community members and users are having second thoughts because of it. I think that's not in the interest of either Canonical, Ubuntu or anyone else in the free software community. Ubuntu needs to stay strong and well-respected. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1073114 Title: Shopping Lens Does Not Respect User Privacy To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libunity/+bug/1073114/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 792705] [NEW] Wireless connection loses contact with Internet
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: network-manager In the last few days, my computer (running Natty, 11.04, for the hardware configuration see attachments) has started losing connection to the Internet when losing wireless. The wireless connection seems to be working fine (and the icon shows it's connected), bur suddenly theres no connection to the Internet. [Bug 572801] Re: The program doesn't start - see http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=556851
I experienced this problem on two quite different computers, an IBM Thinkpad R51 and an MSI Wind U130. It occurs when you install Ubuntu from the alternate CD without having an Internet connection during the installation. I have not tested with the live CD. If you have an Internet connection during install, Pitivi starts fine and the problem in this bug is NOT present. However, if you do an install with no connection, the problem occurs, and if you later connect to the Internet and do an update and upgrade, it is NOT fixed. So something seems to be wrong with the packaging in the repositories which is fixed by apt during install, but which is NOT fixed during a normal updateupgrade. Hope this helps someone, I'm sorry I don't have time to investigate further. I *do* know, though, that this is a real problem - we have a situation where we need to be able to mass install from USB with no access to the Internet. For the time being, I've built in the export workaround mentioned in comment #6 in a shell scripts and have the menu command call that instead of calling Pitivi directly. It works, but it will be nicer once this is fixed. -- The program doesn't start - see http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=556851 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/572801 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I have this error on Ubuntu 10.04 on an IBM R51 Thinkpad. PiTiVi was NOT installed manually. One thing, though: The install was from an Alternate CD, not a Live CD. The workaround in the package description does NOT work for me. [Bug 541620] Re: Ralink RT3090 Wireless Not Supported in Lucid
No, it really suggests there is a file-related bug in the driver. There should not be a Wireless directory in /etc/, and if the driver needs to store a dat file somewhere, /etc/ is hardly the place to put it. Since it doesn't seem to be needed for persistence, it might as well be placed in /tmp. So, the driver should be changed to not need the RT2860STA.dat file OR to look for it somewhere else, AND if it really needs it, to create it if it doesn't find it. In /tmp, e.g. If someone can point me in the direction of the correct source code I think I can fix it. -- Ralink RT3090 Wireless Not Supported in Lucid https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/541620 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 571628] [NEW] Alternate install CD very much slower than installation from live CD
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ubiquity I did an OEM mode installation on an MSI Wind U135 using a USB stick with the alternate CD, created using the USB creating tool in System/Administration. The OEM mode/non-graphical installation took one hour and twenty minutes. Later, I tried doing an OEM install from the Live CD. This usually takes between fifteen and twenty minutes. Conclusion: The alternate installation is doing something differently from the live installer, presumably something wrong. To reproduce: Download Ubuntu 10.04 live CD and alternate CD. Put alternate CD on USB key, boot and install on computer in OEM mode. Note that this takes a looong time. Now put live CD on the same USB key, boot and install on same computer in OEM mode. In my case, Ubuntu always *finds* the Ethernet card, but yes, it also stops working with any traffic after a few seconds. Note: This worked fine in Ubuntu 7.10. The problems started after upgrade to 8.04. I thought about doing a clean reinstall of Ubuntu, but alarmingly the 8.04 live CD had the same problems; i think maybe the driver has uploaded some wrong firmware to the Ethernet card, and since the live CD wanted to use the same driver, it let the pernicious firmware be? Anyway, it works fine in Windows XP, and it also works fine in gNewSense 2, which I have since switched to. br Carsten -- http://www.modspil.dk -- Internet connection times out/not working https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/226026 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 6765] Re: X.org: material under GLX Public License and SGI Free Software License B is not DFSG-free
A quick status: I have contacted Branden Robinson who used to work on this in Debian but still haven't heard from him - he's probably no longer the right person at Debian to contact concerning this problem. The X.org project has been contacted as to their opinion of the problem and the chances og convincing SGI that they should relicense the code, and this has elicited the following response: It's definitely on the list of things that should be remedied at some point, but I don't know of anyone rewriting the GLX code right now. We've already managed to get rid of all code under the (rather similar, IIRC) CID licence, and I think GLX is the only obnoxiously-licensed piece of code left. Right now, our policy is to only accept MIT/X11 and non-four-clause-BSD software (or anything with a more liberal license than that). (Daniel Stone, [1]) Regarding a relicensing, Daniel Stone added that the cost for SGI to do so would be non-trivial: Their legal team are going to want to vet every line of both the license and the code (yes, again). There will be interminable meetings about it with the legal team and 'all relevant stakeholders', and even these will have a perceived cost. In the end, it will come down to a lot of money (some justified, some not), and the legal team and everyone else will demand a business reason as to why they should spend this money. Also, they'll want a compelling (to their bottom line, not to a bunch of bearded people who care about the difference between free software and open source) reason to change anything at all. [2] There was some discussion regarding whom to address in this case since control of OpenGL has passed to the Khronos Group, however there's apparently no doubt that SGO are still the relevant party in this matter: SGI still owns and vehemently defends their ownership and licensing rights of the OpenGL trademark, their code, and their patents related to OpenGL [3] Regarding the priority of this bug within the X.org project, Stone supplied this summary: It's definitely on the TODO list, but at the moment we're swamped in things to fix and actually get working at all (as opposed to working with a poor license) and have very few developers, so if you could find someone willing to step up and do this work, things would probably happen a lot quicker. [4] CURRENT STATUS: SGI is unlikely to want to change their license, so if this bug is to be solved, the GLX code in the X.org server (currently 54 source files under the SGI public license and 2 under the GLX public license, i.e. practically everything in the directories GL/glx/ and hw/dmx/glxProxy/) needs to be replaced. RECOMMENDED COURSE OF ACTION: A) Contact SGI at least once more in order to convince them that relicensing this code would be a good idea, for them as well as for all GNU/Linux distributions, since these licenses makes distribution of modified versions of the GLX code legally problematic. Possibly contact the FSF or others to get advice on how to approach them and which legal problems/obstacles may apply. B) If this is unsuccessful, estimate the time needed for at rewrite - estimate doesn't need to be very reliable, but are we talking days, weeks, or months? (I should guess weeks, but testing might be a problem - input is welcome). We also need to find if a rewrite e.g. might run afoul of patents. C) Find a number of developers and get the job done. I'm willing to participate in the rewrite but will need support from someone with more expertise in graphics programming. NEXT IN LINE: Try to work out how best to do A). This will take me a couple of days, at least. Input is welcome, you can send it to my email address or post it as a comment on this bug. [Bug 226026] [NEW] Internet connection times out/not working
Public bug reported: Using a wired Ethernet card for connectivity. When booting the computer, Network Manager detects the card and I get an IP address, and the Internet works very briefly. After a couple of second's use of the Internet connection, the connection apparently times out or at least expires; during normal browsing, I'm typically able to read the first page I load but not the second. When reading mail, it usually manages to download only about half my mail before the connection dies. I can then right click Network Manager, uncheck Enable Networking, wait a sec, check Enable Networking once again, which makes it connect and get the computer an IP address, etc ... whereuopn I once again have a few second's worth of Internet connection. So what did I do? Nothing, as far as I know; the system comes from a clean Gutsy install dating from November, recently (after release) upgraded to Hardy by the Upgrade Manager. The day it went wrong I installed some KVM extensions, found out KVM can't run on my CPU as it doesn't support virtualization optimization, and ended up simulating a Debian-derived system in Qemu instead. AFAIK that's the only things I've done the last days which might affect the kernel and its drivers. Nothing appears to be wrong with the hardware - if I boot into windows, wired networking works just fine. Here is some sample output from ifconfig: eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:17:53:10:5f inet addr:84.238.94.107 Bcast:84.238.94.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 inet6 addr: fe80::216:17ff:fe53:105f/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:2304 errors:0 dropped:2 overruns:0 frame:2 TX packets:1672 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:1275408 (1.2 MB) TX bytes:198555 (193.9 KB) Interrupt:17 Base address:0xe000 loLink encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:4143 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:4143 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:213215 (208.2 KB) TX bytes:213215 (208.2 KB) Here is the Ethernet card's entry from lspci: 04:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.
