[Bug 1779933] Re: Unable to log in through guest network captive portal

2021-09-07 Thread Carsten Agger
I just experienced the same problem on Ubuntu 20.04 at a Best Western
hotel in London.

It's kind of a dealbreaker if you're travelling and need to work, so
would be good to have it fixed.

[Bug 1910908] Re: Web-login page for captive portals not opening on public wireless networks

I experienced this recently while staying on a hotel in London. While I
managed to get online on my Android phone, it was annoying - would be
good to see it fixed so it works out of the box.

Hi Gustavo,

I just did that. It doesn't fix it. In fact, it does nothing, reflecting
the fact that the 12.04 system is already fully upgraded.

[Bug 1262637] [NEW] System hangs on login immediately after logout

2013-12-19 Thread Carsten Agger
Public bug reported:

We're running Ubuntu 12.04.

The bug occurs with a number of PC running a kiosk-like setup with
password-free login. The desktop is standard Unity.

Scenario:

* User arrives at PC in library.
* User finds active session and wants to log out to get a fresh session.
* User logs out
* User *immediately* presses button to login
* System hangs.

The system hanging is like this: Desktop icons are present, but the
launcher is gone, and the top bar with the time and command menus
(including the logout menu) is also gone.

The only way out (bar hitting the power button) is to enter CTRL-ALT-
DEL, which opens a logout dialog. You can now choose to logout, wait a
while and login again.

It *seems* to be caused by the very swift sequence of logout + login.

It's annoying and thus a serious bug, since it's very confusing to
transient users, of which we have a lot.

[Bug 1156574] [NEW] User interface crashes, computer restarts back to login screen

2013-03-18 Thread Carsten Agger
Public bug reported:

Symptoms: All of a sudden the screen is black, and the computer restarts
back to the login screen.

Note: It's a full restart, not just the X server which crashes.

I'm not using proprietary graphics drivers, and effects are thus
disabled (i.e., I'm using Unity2D).

One possible clue: It's now happened several times while I tried to
install Ubuntu 12.04 as a guest OS in VirtualBox.

[Bug 1156574] Re: User interface crashes, computer restarts back to login screen

2013-03-18 Thread Carsten Agger
OK, I'm beginning to think this is because of faulty hardware. Not the
proprietary graphics driver, as it's not loaded, but something else. The
computer restarted at least eight times today before I gave up!

Still, if some hardware is faulty shouldn't the OS report this rather
than reboot?

[Bug 1073114] Re: Shopping Lens Does Not Respect User Privacy

2013-01-09 Thread Carsten Agger
Thanks to Mike Davis for the summary. I'd just like to add that I really
hope to see this issue fixed in 13.04.

As a formerly very active member of the Ubuntu LoCo and present free
software activist, I really don't feel I can recommend Ubuntu 12.10 to
anyone as long as this bug stands. It's a betrayal of the values that
formerly led me to support Ubuntu and struggle to get the word out to
people, and after 12.04 (which is an excellent system BTW) I may well
have to start recommending that people use Trisquel or Debian instead of
Ubuntu.

As a user, my strong feeling is that if my computer is to search for
anything online it's because *I* ask it to, explicitly. If Amazon search
is opt-out not opt-in, a very basic trust is betrayed.

While a genuine privacy concern is standing, also note that the Ubuntu
brand IS being tarnished. A lot of valuable community members and users
are having second thoughts because of it. I think that's not in the
interest of either Canonical, Ubuntu or anyone else in the free software
community. Ubuntu needs to stay strong and well-respected.

Just got this crash again, as reported in #780358. Is this still guaranteed to
be the same problem, i.e. the Xrecord thing? The backtraces are not completely
identical.

[Bug 792705] [NEW] Wireless connection loses contact with Internet

2011-06-04 Thread Carsten Agger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

In the last few days, my computer (running Natty, 11.04, for the
hardware configuration see attachments) has started losing connection to
the Internet when losing wireless.

The wireless connection seems to be working fine (and the icon shows
it's connected), bur suddenly theres no connection to the Internet. The
solution to get Internet back on is to disconnect from the wireless
network and reconnect to the same network.

This is, however, rather annoying.

[Bug 792705] Re: Wireless connection loses contact with Internet

2011-06-04 Thread Carsten Agger
I've received some major updates in the last few days, so I suppose one
of them has broken the handling of LAN/WAN for wireless.

I have not previously experienced such problems on this computer.

This occurs both at work and at home, i.e. on a Lenovo T series Thinkpad

I'm using Unity on both computers. The X crashes started about May 3rd
or 4th. Maybe a broken update? The two computers have different graphics
cards.

I first tried to get technical support at ask-ubuntu
(http://askubuntu.com/questions/40250/random-x-crashes-in-ubuntu-11-04),
but Jorge Castro asked me to file a bug.

[Bug 776499] Re: gvim gets no global menu, timeout warning on the console

2011-05-05 Thread Carsten Agger
Workaround: launch as gvim -f and the menu reappears.

This should not be necessary, though; and the warning is still printed
on the console:

(gvim:10543): GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager:
None of the authentication protocols specified are supported.

[Bug 776499] Re: gvim gets no global menu, timeout warning on the console

2011-05-05 Thread Carsten Agger
Of course, the warning mentioned above may be unimportant. This is what
matters, i suspect:

** (gvim:10615): WARNING **: Unable to register window with path
'/com/canonical/menu/483': Tiden løb ud

And you don't see that with gvim -f.

[Bug 768791] Re: USB creator won't select ISO for creating boot USB

2011-04-22 Thread Carsten Agger
Note: It actually works for CDs - if I insert a CD, I can create a boot
USB for that. But for ISOs, it fails (and it shouldn't).

I can mount ISOs as directories without problem, so it's not that. Seems
the program fails when the user tries to add an ISO to the list and
that's all there is to it.

[Bug 768791] [NEW] USB creator won't select ISO for creating boot USB

2011-04-22 Thread Carsten Agger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usb-creator

When trying to create a bootable USB stick, I put in the USB and start
usb-creator-gtk, as usual.

I use the button to browse my way to my ISO file. I select the ISO,
click Open in the prompt.

The prompt closes, but the ISO is NOT added to the list. The end result
is that it's *completely impossible* to make a bootable USB stick from
an ISO file, since you are unable to add ISOs to the list.

This used to work, so I suppose it must have broken in a recent upgrade.

[Bug 541620] Re: Ralink RT3090 Wireless Not Supported in Lucid

2010-12-23 Thread Carsten Agger
But, of course, such a workaround as installing the netbook edition
instead is just strange. It would be nice and easier to fix if it could
be understood why installing the netbook edition produces a different
result.

[Bug 531190] Re: upower (devkit-power) reporting bad data when AC cable is unplugged

2010-12-22 Thread Carsten Agger
Jonas, if your computer is hibernating every ten minutes, i think it's a
different bug from the one reported here. I haven'st seen that behaviour
with equipment affected by this bug. With my laptop, if the cable is u
nplugged and it threatens to go into hibernation, everything is OK on
battery if I reboot. Maybe you or someone else should report a new bug?

Sorry, but this bug is NOT a duplicate of bug 685682.

I am not using proprietary ATI drivers, actually none is available for
my card. For that reason, I have removed the marking as duplicate.

OK. Note that even though the problem is fixed in Natty (and I will test
it as soon as I get time) the problem will still be there in Maverick
... but since Maverick is a short-lived release maybe it isn't worth
fixing it there.

[Bug 676921] [NEW] Task bars and applets are invisible, only background seen

2010-11-18 Thread Carsten Agger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

When I log onto Ubuntu Netbook edition, I don't see the applets and
shortcuts on the vertical OR the horizontal task bar, only the
background image. I can activate them, though, by clicking in the
correct locations.

I have attached two screenshots and the output from lspci. More input

[Bug 676930] [NEW] Weather is not shown in clock applet, previously it was

2010-11-18 Thread Carsten Agger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Previously, i.e. until a couple of weeks ago, the weather was shown fine
in my Ubuntu 10.10 installation. Suddenly and mysteriously, it stopped
doing so. I checked the location/time zone setting, but this does not
seem to be the problem, so it's not that problem. Maybe related to my
graphics card?

[Bug 572801] Re: The program doesn't start - see http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=556851

2010-07-02 Thread Carsten Agger
I experienced this problem on two quite different computers, an IBM
Thinkpad R51 and an MSI Wind U130.

It occurs when you install Ubuntu from the alternate CD without having
an Internet connection during the installation. I have not tested with
the live CD. If you have an Internet connection during install, Pitivi
starts fine and the problem in this bug is NOT present.

However, if you do an install with no connection, the problem occurs,
and if you later connect to the Internet and do an update and upgrade,
it is NOT fixed.

So something seems to be wrong with the packaging in the repositories
which is fixed by apt during install, but which is NOT fixed during a
normal updateupgrade. Hope this helps someone, I'm sorry I don't have
time to investigate further.

I *do* know, though, that this is a real problem - we have a situation
where we need to be able to mass install from USB with no access to the
Internet. For the time being, I've built in the export workaround
mentioned in comment #6 in a shell scripts and have the menu command
call that instead of calling Pitivi directly. It works, but it will be
nicer once this is fixed.

[Bug 572801] Re: The program doesn't start - see http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=556851

2010-06-30 Thread Carsten Agger
I have this error on Ubuntu 10.04 on an IBM R51 Thinkpad. PiTiVi was NOT
installed manually.

One thing, though: The install was from an Alternate CD, not a Live CD.
Don't note if that might make a difference, but perhaps.

2010-06-30 Thread Carsten Agger
The workaround in the package description does NOT work for me.

If I write this in a terminal before running the program it does work,
though:

export PYTHONPATH=/usr/lib/pitivi/python

Would seem to be necessary to write that in the global environment
somewhere to make it work from the menus.

Why status invalid? Many people seems to have this problem in still-

[Bug 541620] Re: Ralink RT3090 Wireless Not Supported in Lucid

2010-05-24 Thread Carsten Agger
No, it really suggests there is a file-related bug in the driver. There
should not be a Wireless directory in /etc/, and if the driver needs
to store a dat file somewhere, /etc/ is hardly the place to put it.
Since it doesn't seem to be needed for persistence, it might as well be
placed in /tmp.

So, the driver should be changed to not need the RT2860STA.dat file OR
to look for it somewhere else, AND if it really needs it, to create it
if it doesn't find it. In /tmp, e.g.

If someone can point me in the direction of the correct source code I
think I can fix it.

[Bug 571628] [NEW] Alternate install CD very much slower than installation from live CD

2010-04-29 Thread Carsten Agger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

I did an OEM mode installation on an MSI Wind U135 using a USB stick
with the alternate CD, created using the USB creating tool in
System/Administration.

The OEM mode/non-graphical installation took one hour and twenty
minutes.

Later, I tried doing an OEM install from the Live CD. This usually takes
between fifteen and twenty minutes.

Conclusion: The alternate installation is doing something differently
from the live installer, presumably something wrong.

To reproduce:

Download Ubuntu 10.04 live CD and alternate CD.

Put alternate CD on USB key, boot and install on computer in OEM mode.
Note that this takes a looong time.

Now put live CD on the same USB key, boot and install on same computer
in OEM mode. Note that this is very fast.

There should not be any Wireless directory in /etc, i believe - and
the file is not needed. This mus be a bug in the driver - it should not
look for this file since it isn't need it. How do I locate the driver
and do we have the source code for it? I'm not familiar with Ubuntu
development but with plenty experience with C I think I could easliy fix
it. Maybe better leave it to upstream, tho

Yes.

The two remaining fles under GLX Public license are these:

Presumably they will also be relicensed, the question is how - SGI's
press release doesn't mention this. I've emailed the FSF asking if they
know the details.

I think that this bug is related with bug 205374. Can you read it and confirm
that it's the same issue ? Thanks in advance.

The problem may well be related, especially since it's the same kind of
ethernet card. In my case, Ubuntu always *finds* the Ethernet card, but
yes, it also stops working with any traffic after a few seconds.

Note:
This worked fine in Ubuntu 7.10. The problems started after upgrade to
8.04. I thought about doing a clean reinstall of Ubuntu, but alarmingly
the 8.04 live CD had the same problems; i think maybe the driver has
uploaded some wrong firmware to the Ethernet card, and since the live CD
wanted to use the same driver, it let the pernicious firmware be?

Anyway, it works fine in Windows XP, and it also works fine in gNewSense
2, which I have since switched to.

[Bug 6765] Re: X.org: material under GLX Public License and SGI Free Software License B is not DFSG-free

2008-05-08 Thread Carsten Agger
A quick status:

I have contacted Branden Robinson who used to work on this in Debian but
still haven't heard from him - he's probably no longer the right person
at Debian to contact concerning this problem.

The X.org project has been contacted as to their opinion of the problem
and the chances og convincing SGI that they should relicense the code,
and this has elicited the following response:

It's definitely on the list of things that should be remedied at some
point, but I don't know of anyone rewriting the GLX code right now.
We've already managed to get rid of all code under the (rather similar,
IIRC) CID licence, and I think GLX is the only obnoxiously-licensed
piece of code left. Right now, our policy is to only accept MIT/X11 and
non-four-clause-BSD software (or anything with a more liberal license
than that).
(Daniel Stone, [1])

Regarding a relicensing, Daniel Stone added that the cost for SGI to do
so would be non-trivial:

Their legal team are going to want to vet every line of both the license
and the code (yes, again). There will be interminable meetings about it
with the legal team and 'all relevant stakeholders', and even these will
have a perceived cost. In the end, it will come down to a lot of money
(some justified, some not), and the legal team and everyone else will
demand a business reason as to why they should spend this money. Also,
they'll want a compelling (to their bottom line, not to a bunch of
bearded people who care about the difference between free software and
open source) reason to change anything at all. [2]

There was some discussion regarding whom to address in this case since
control of OpenGL has passed to the Khronos Group, however there's
apparently no doubt that SGO are still the relevant party in this
matter:

SGI still owns and vehemently defends their ownership
and licensing rights of the OpenGL trademark, their code, and their
patents related to OpenGL [3]

Regarding the priority of this bug within the X.org project, Stone
supplied this summary:

It's definitely on the TODO list, but at the moment we're swamped in
things to fix and actually get working at all (as opposed to working
with a poor license) and have very few developers, so if you could find
someone willing to step up and do this work, things would probably
happen a lot quicker. [4]

CURRENT STATUS:

SGI is unlikely to want to change their license, so if this bug is to be
solved, the GLX code in the X.org server (currently 54 source files
under the SGI public license and 2 under the GLX public license, i.e.
practically everything in the directories GL/glx/ and hw/dmx/glxProxy/)
needs to be replaced.

RECOMMENDED COURSE OF ACTION:

A)
Contact SGI at least once more in order to convince them that relicensing this
code would be a good idea, for them as well as for all GNU/Linux distributions,
since these licenses makes distribution of modified versions of the GLX code
legally problematic. Possibly contact the FSF or others to get advice on how to
approach them and which legal problems/obstacles may apply.

B)
If this is unsuccessful, estimate the time needed for at rewrite - estimate
doesn't need to be very reliable, but are we talking days, weeks, or months? (I
should guess weeks, but testing might be a problem - input is welcome). We
also need to find if a rewrite e.g. might run afoul of patents.

C)
Find a number of developers and get the job done. I'm willing to participate in
the rewrite but will need support from someone with more expertise in graphics
programming.

NEXT IN LINE:

Try to work out how best to do A). This will take me a couple of days,
at least. Input is welcome, you can send it to my email address or post
it as a comment on this bug.

Not if the new code is obviously not based on the old code. The GNU
project has excellent old guidelines for that.

Point in case should be

1) find out which APIs to implement and which services to offer
2) never ever during the implementation look in or use ideas from SGI's code.

In that case, the rewrite should be safe. Patents is probably a bigger
issue here.

[Bug 226026] Re: Internet connection times out/not working

2008-05-08 Thread Carsten Agger
Further: Wired networking actually works fine if I boot into the old
(2.6.22) kernel.

It's when I boot into the new one I got with the Hary update that I see
the problem. Wireless networking works fine with either kernel.

[Bug 226026] [NEW] Internet connection times out/not working

2008-05-03 Thread Carsten Agger
Public bug reported:

Using a wired Ethernet card for connectivity.

When booting the computer, Network Manager detects the card and I get an
IP address, and the Internet works very briefly.

After a couple of second's use of the Internet connection, the
connection apparently times out or at least expires; during normal
browsing, I'm typically able to read the first page I load but not the
second. When reading mail, it usually manages to download only about
half my mail before the connection dies.

I can then right click Network Manager, uncheck Enable Networking,
wait a sec, check Enable Networking once again, which makes it connect
and get the computer an IP address, etc ... whereuopn I once again have
a few second's worth of Internet connection.

So what did I do? Nothing, as far as I know; the system comes from a
clean Gutsy install dating from November, recently (after release)
upgraded to Hardy by the Upgrade Manager. The day it went wrong I
installed some KVM extensions, found out KVM can't run on my CPU as it
doesn't support virtualization optimization, and ended up simulating a
Debian-derived system in Qemu instead. AFAIK that's the only things I've
done the last days which might affect the kernel and its drivers.

Nothing appears to be wrong with the hardware - if I boot into windows,
wired networking works just fine.

Here is some sample output from ifconfig:

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:17:53:10:5f

Here is the Ethernet card's entry from lspci:

04:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI
Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 01)
Please note that the fix proposed in bug #136836, namely to enter the lines:

# rmmod forcedeth
# modprobe forcedeth msi=0 msix=0
# /etc/init.d/networking restart

does NOT solve the problem, thus I suppose the problem is not the same.

[Bug 187547] Re: nautilus eat memory, locks desktop

2008-02-20 Thread Carsten Agger
This seems to be the same problem as in: 185483

I saw a similar scenario just now: I attempted to display the Properties
dialog for a file on the desktop (to check how big it was).

No Properties window appeared, but after some time I discovered that a)
no icons or files were displayed on the desktop (i.e., the desktop was
not displaying correctly) and b), nautilus was using 90% of the CPU so
the computer was practically blocked. Alas, I don't know how to
reproduce this.

[Bug 76013] forkbomb can crash system in default installation

2006-12-16 Thread Carsten Agger
Public bug reported:

If you enter this command:

:(){ :|: };:

in a terminal with a default Ubuntu configuration, Ubuntu
dies instantly as the fork bomb creates process after process.

Proposed fix: Impose some sanity level in /etc/security/limits.conf

Note: On each machine, this is easily fixed by entering a default hard limit
of (say) 5000 processes per user in limits.conf.

I'm arguing this should be the DEFAULT behaviour of a fresh Ubuntu install.
Right now, a default installation dies if the fork bomb is launched (at least
Xubuntu 6.10 does).

[Bug 69523] Disability hostile: many of the pre-installed screensavers trigger migraine

2006-10-31 Thread Carsten Agger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xscreensaver

I have set xscreensaver to switch between a large number of the
preinstalled screensavers.

My girl friend, a heavy sufferer of migraine, has observed that a large
number of these screensavers trigger a migraine attack in her if she
doesn't look away immediately. It's especially screensavers involving
small, flickering geometric changes with shifting colours.

This makes standard installations a bit hostile towards sufferers of
migraine.

Proposed action: The default selection of screensavers to switch between
is limited to screensavers which don't trigger a seizure in migraine
sufferers.

Maybe some sort of warning should be inserted in the description of
those which do.

I suppose contact could be made to some organisation lige
migraine.org.uk to ask them if they perceive this to be a problem which
ought to be addressed.
