[Bug 441941] Re: grub fails after running Windows

2009-12-14 Thread Chris_Z
Spoked too soon.
After a week, the problem recurred. There are more factory utilities to
uninstall.

[Bug 482757] Re: Grub loading. The symbol ' ' not found. Aborted. Press any key...

You may well encountered bug 441941.

In nutshell, GRUB 2 needs more space after MBR than Grub Legacy.
Some Windows installations, netbooks in particular, have some kind of factory
installed Recovery Solution. Its purpose is to recover/repair Windows using
backups from a hidden partition.

So, the culprit is this additional Windows software. In order to provide
its recovery functions it writes some crap behind MBR without doing any
checking for possible collisions, and in our case, ruining GRUB 2 image
file. Uninstalling these recovery tools from Windows should be
sufficient.

[Bug 441941] Re: grub fails after running Windows

2009-12-07 Thread Chris_Z
Encountered this on Samsung N120 Netbook.
It has factory installed Samsung Recovery Solution III.

Googled that it does write behind MBR without checking.
Uninstalled Samsung Recovery Solution III (from Windows).

So far so good, no more GRUB 2 corruption.

[Bug 327362] Re: Some ISPs have .local domain which disables avahi-daemon

2009-10-23 Thread Chris_Z
@robbanl

Just create this file with gedit (gksudo gedit /etc/default/avahi-
daemon) and put inside:

   AVAHI_DAEMON_DETECT_LOCAL=0

and after that start the service manually from the terminal:

  sudo service avahi-daemon start
