@Ketil I have lightning-fast hardware raid and the problem still occurs. [Bug 791992] Re: btrfs in 2.6.38 extremely slow (when near full?)
Hi all, my RAID array is filling up, so this bug started to effect me as well. My NAS is running from a 40GB SSD drive. Linux CSNAS 2.6.38-8-server #42-Ubuntu SMP Mon Apr 11 03:49:04 UTC 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu DISTRIB_RELEASE=11.04 DISTRIB_CODENAME=natty DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION=Ubuntu 11.04 I have a RAID6 setup, 16x2TB disks using an Adaptec 51645 card. Now that I passed the 90% mark, the write speeds have dropped to a very low rate and I get random speeds in the range of 1MB/sec to 14MB/sec. At quite a few occasions Windows reports 'disk full' and the transfer is aborted; this is most annoying with large files (size10GB) because I simply cannot transfer these anymore (they time out eventually). Dunno if it's related, but since this is not a system disk, I have reduced the reserved space to 0 (meaning that I should be able to utilize the remaining space just the same). [Bug 607698] [NEW] karmic to lucid upgrade: hardware RAID array disappeared
Public bug reported: I had a 64bit server based on Ubuntu 9.10. There is a SATA flash drive. It has three partitions (an NTFS with Windows on it - never used; just in case), an ext4 partition containing the system itself (ext4), and the swap. The system partition used to be /dev/sda1. Then, there is a RAID array containing the backups. The array consists of eight 1.5TB disks on an Adaptec 51645 card, all configured as a RAID 6 array; formatted as a single ext4 partition. This used to be /dev/sdb1. It's been a while since Lucid has been released, so I decided to upgrade. I used these commands: sudo aptitude install update-manager-core sudo do-release-upgrade -d At some point I was asked to replace a configuration file - I chose to replace it with the new version. At the Grub2 setup, I marked the first disk and all its partitions. I saw a warning on the console about installing Grub on partitions being a bad idea, but it went away quickly, so I could not make a proper note of it. Other than that, I got no errors and everything went normal. After reboot, the system works, the services are running, but instead of the RAID array, the system partition was mounted - I guess because /dev/sda1 (the ext4 partition containing the system) became /dev/sdb1 - and the RAID array is not visible at all. 2.6.32-23-server ~$ lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Release:10.04 ~$ df Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/sdb1 7692876 1592356 5709744 22% / none893684 228893456 1% /dev none898112 0898112 0% /dev/shm tmpfs 898112 0898112 0% /tmp none898112 248897864 1% /var/run none898112 0898112 0% /var/lock none898112 0898112 0% /lib/init/rw I attached /etc/fstab (just in case). Note that the RAID6 mount is commented out for now. I found similar problem reports on lauchpad, but I could not relate my problem to any of those completely, so I decided to report it. I guess it will take a while to fix it, so my immediate question is: how can I make the RAID array visible again? Since I have no GUI (not even a monitor so I can's see pre-boot msges), so I would appreciate instructions usable via SSH console. [Bug 607873] [NEW] Lucid AMD64 Server clean install: Grub does not load
Public bug reported: I have a 40GB SSD. I create a 32GB Primary partition, and install Windows XP Pro there. I leave the rest empty. I start installing Ubuntu Server 10.04 AMD64 from the CD (ubuntu-10.04-server-amd64.iso). At some point I need to select the partition to install Lucid. First, I selected use biggest free space option. When I tried installing Lucid a second time, I chose manual partitioning and I chose automatic in the second menu. The result it identical in both cases. The installation goes through just fine, at the end, Grub identifies the Windows XP Pro partition correctly, and recommends updating the master boot record - so I chose yes. After reboot, Windows XP Pro is loaded. Grub does not appear and thus, the server that just installed successfully is nowhere to be seen... The partitions seem ok under XP's partition manager (two unknown partitions are shown, probably / and swap). I am guessing that there is something wrong with the debian-installer, because Grub does not even appear. I tried fixing Grub using the recovery mode on the install CD. In this case, I can select the root file system /dev/sdb5, but when I try to re-install Grub any /dev/sdb* device, I get a red screen with an error message. For a temporary solution: Is there any way to install the old Grub instead of Grub2? [Bug 346691] Re: 2.6.28-11 causes massive data corruption on 64 bit installations
Hi there, I am afraid I have the same problem - the EXT4 file system getting corrupted over time. I've built a NAS from Ubuntu 9.10 Server amd64. The system+temp is on an SSD drive, while the data is on a RAID6 array using an Adaptec 51645 card and 8 identical 1.5TB disks. I use use SSH/PUTTY to manage the box and Samba to access the data (fill using my Windows machine, play using XBMC on Linux mini), and I never reboot the machine unless there was an update installed. uname -r: 2.6.31-19-server fstab: /dev/sdb1/mnt/raid6 ext4 suid, dev, exec, nodelalloc 0 0 I never noticed anything wrong, but today I was looking for a file that was supposed to be there. The file was not there, but there were files from other directories(!). So, obviously there is something wrong. I removed the mount command from fstab, reboot, then I run: sudo fsck.ext4 -fyv /dev/sdb1 I got massive amounts of inode issues - I could not take a copy because the PUTTY buffer seems to be too small (text has been pushed off very quickly). Right now it says Clone multiply-claimed blocks? yes and it's hanging - I understand it takes quite a while. I wonder if I am a victim of the same corruption reported in this thread and whether I can fix it using fsck.ext4. I would not like to loose any data, because I just can't recover it from anywhere (these are HD family movies, pictures and such nowhere else to be found). I never planned on making backups because RAID6 offers good protection and using nodelalloc in the mount options should protect from power loss. Please advise. Thank you. ** Attachment added: LSHW.TXT http://launchpadlibrarian.net/39897011/LSHW.TXT -- 2.6.28-11 causes massive data corruption on 64 bit installations https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/346691 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 498734] [NEW] nmbd stops randomly - cannot access using hostname from Windows XP
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: samba I found a number of reports about nmbd not starting. For me nmbd does start, but stops randomly, so while this is a different bug, it must be somehow related. But, first things first. I am new to Linux. I followed various tutorial on the net to install a NAS using Ubuntu Server. I installed it, was working for a while, then it stopped working, I reinstalled it, and this cycle was going on and on and on like 10 times. Then, I decided to call in a favour from a friend who has experience. I installed Ubuntu Server 9.10 again (amd64), updated the system using apt-get (that was yesterday, 19-Dec-2009), configured Samba again the way I used to, and I called my friend to take a look. He used ssh to access the machine, and do his magic. He fine-tuned Samba with the users and permissions I wanted, then he said we should also reboot the system to make sure that everything mounts and loads as it should - so, we rebooted the the system. After reboot, I could access my Samba share just fine. So, we opened a drink to celebrate. About five minutes later, I went back to the machine to map the drives, but I could not access the Samba share using the netbios name from Windows XP - I could access it using the IP address though. We had no idea what was going on and we've been Google-ing around for hours, trying various configuration changes in network setting as recommended by various messages claiming that it solved their problem. Well, none of those network tweaks have helped us, so I gave up. My friend was pissed because it was supposed to work so he kept checking things I know nothing about. Then he said: f**k, nmbd is not running! He restarted Samba (and with it nmbd) and everything was working again. After a while, it stopped again. He tried restarting Samba again, but this time it did not work. He said we should start from boot and he will watch it and see when it stops and why. So, we reboot and he keeps his eyes open. He said there are some read errors in /var/log/samba/log.nmbd for the socket. The is what he sent me: read_socket_with_timeout: read error = Socket operation on non-socket. read from child failed: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED I Googled about this and I ended up here, sounds like it to me (who don't know much about Linux): http://lists.samba.org/archive/samba/1998-March/006767.html My friend ended up on this forum, here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/462169 Though that error talks about nmbd not starting. For us, nmbd does start (he found traces and I can also access the Samna share using the netbios host name), but it stops at some point which we could not track down.
