[Bug 1309971] [NEW] other workspaces are blank with no way to switch back

2014-04-19 Thread Dan Connolly
Public bug reported:

What I did;
  - upgraded to 14.04 trusty
 - installed gnome-session-flashback
 - logged out; logged in with gnome flashback (compiz)
 - in the lower left corner, right click to bring up preferences; change number
of workspaces to 4
 - click on workspace 3

What I expected:
 - a panel (with clock etc.) above and a (mostly) blank taskbar below with a
workspace switcher
 - or at least the ability to get back to workspace 1 using ALT-arrow

What I saw instead:
 - a screen completely blank except for the background
 - no way to change workspaces, launch programs log out, etc.

I had to CTRL-ALT-F1 and loging and `sudo /etc/init.d/lightdm restart`
to log in again. Of course, I lose my session state.

The symptoms are very much like #156502. That bug was closed as as
invalid with an explanation of This particular bug has already been
reported into our bug tracking system but no reference to the bug that

Am I missing some policy about upstream bug handling or something?

Or is this just a considered decision about how the package maintainers

[Bug 680972] [NEW] e-calendar-factory pegs cpu for a while on access to GroupWise calendar

2010-11-24 Thread Dan Connolly
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution-data-server

To reproduce:

1. In evolution, add a groupwise calendar
2. Bring up the gnome calendar panel applet showing your appointments for the
day and such
3. Click the date again to put the panel applet away

expected result: applet goes away with no perceived latency

observed result: applet remains on screen and CPU utilization goes to
100% for 10 or 15 seconds; then applet goes away and CPU usage returns
to normal

The symptoms and such are quite similar to:

[Bug 576628] [NEW] values of drop-down fields in imported MS Word files don't display

2010-05-06 Thread Dan Connolly
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

To reproduce the problem:

1.Start MS Word.
2.Open the forms toolbar (view/toolbars menu).
3.Click drop-down field icon to insert a field.
4.Double-click the inserted field; add some choices: choice A, choice B, choice
C
5.protect the document (Tools/Protect Document…)
6. choose one of the choices, e.g. choice B
7. save the document (I have an example to attach)
8. Open the document in openoffice writer

expected results: choice B shows up
actual result: field shows as grey background, but no field value is chosen

[Bug 574686] [NEW] can't get lucid installer to upgrade offline, without going over the net

2010-05-03 Thread Dan Connolly
Public bug reported:

I'm trying to upgrade to Ubuntu 10.4 lucid from a torrent; I found directions
at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LucidUpgrades#Upgrading%20from%20a%20Torrent

Getting the torrent was no trouble; it took about 20 minutes to get
both the desktop and the alternate image (I didn't realize I needed
the alternate image until I had started getting the desktop image).

$ md5sum *i386*
5b2dadacfd692b4f2d5c7cf034539262  ubuntu-10.04-alternate-i386.iso
d044a2a0c8103fc3e5b7e18b0f7de1c8  ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso

Then I mounted the image a la:

$ sudo mount -o loop /home/connolly/Desktop/OpenSource/OpenSource-
CD/ubuntu-10.04-alternate-i386.iso /media/cdrom0

and then I started the installer:

$ gksu sh /cdrom/cdromupgrade

At the Include latest updates from the Internet? dialog, I answered No.
It says quite clearly: If you answer 'no' here, the network is not used at
all.

but then I get a Do you want to start the upgrade? dialog that
says You have to download a total of 1,209M.

I thought perhaps download was a misnomer and that it would
get the packages locally, but
 (a) the network went *very* busy (estimating hours to days to complete), so I
cancelled it;
 (b) I took the network down with sudo ifdown eth0 and tried again,
  and it failed altogether

Then I thought perhaps the problem was related to using a mounted .iso image
rather than a physical CD, so I burned the image to CD and tried again.
Same symptoms (with the alternate and then the desktop CD).

I have logs of all of these attempts; I think the one with eth0 down is likely
to have the most information; let's see if I can figure out how to attach it...

Ugh... I don't see any way to attach files.
So I put it in http://pastebin.com/C5S97rRY

Hmm... package linux got attached to this question somewhow; I doubt
that's the relevant package, but I'm not sure which is... perhaps
update-manager-core?

 system (except Linux) and users are used to this behavior. It's
 completely obvious this works, always and everywhere. It's completely
 obvious to expect this behavior in Linux and it's completely ridiculous
 this doesn't work in Linux. For a user it's completely obvious the
 content isn't lost, so a user just closes OpenOffice.org and is really
 surprised when he wants to paste the content of the clipboard in
 Evolution and the clipboard is empty. A user really doesn't know what's
 going on and he's lost maybe an hour of work!!!

Indeed, this is what concerns me. When I was doing product development,
a bug that caused loss of user data was SEV 1 and took priority over
just about everything else.

I'm having a hard time reconciling this with Importance: wishlist
in launchpad.

While I acknowledge the challenge of getting the problem fixed
in a large variety of applications, I think a lot of the
heated discussion here would be reduced if launchpad more
clearly acknowledged the severity of the bug.

The affects me too mechanism is relevant, of course; evidently
53 people have found/used it. But when people are affected by
this bug, they're much more likely to throw their computer out
the window than learn about launchpad and find the
affects me too button.

Ah..

[Bug 288093] Re: Can't play sound because of pulseaudio hang

2009-01-16 Thread Dan Connolly
I'm seeing similar symptoms; after using a mixture of flash, banshee,
and totem for a while, I have to kill -9 to recover.

My sound device (per lspci) is:
00:05.0 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP61 High Definition Audio (rev a2)

meanwhile, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PulseAudio seems to be out of date;
it refers to libflashsupport , but apt says:

Package libflashsupport is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
However the following packages replace it:
  flashplugin-nonfree-extrasound

[Bug 118789] Re: trouble using ExportFormFields in uno API; PDF form controls are exported even when set to False

2008-07-08 Thread Dan Connolly
I got a clue from somebody...

Your problem is that you need to pass an array as a value of a
PropertyValue, and a PropertyValue can receive anything. So you have to
tell the COM bridge what kind of value you are passing.

yes, if it's like formcontrol.pdf, it's broken. What I expect is
formcontrol-gui.pdf.

[Bug 118789] trouble using ExportFormFields in uno API; PDF form controls are exported even when set to False

2007-06-05 Thread Dan Connolly
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

The spec for the PDF export dialog says

ExportFormFields oor:type=xs:boolean default:true Specifies whether
form fields are exported as widgets or only their fixed print
representation is exported.

http://specs.openoffice.org/appwide/pdf_export/PDFExportDialog.odt

but it doesn't seem to actually work.

I took the ooextract.py example
http://udk.openoffice.org/python/samples/ooextract.py
and tried to use ExportFormFields, without luck.

I'm not the only one having this problem; in a Dec 2006 forum post, I
see:

 So, has anyone been able to use OOo's writer_pdf_export
 filter and the ExportFormFields property with success?
 I have not had success with the following code:
 --
http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=50504highlight=flatten+pdf

Then I found an Aug 2006 suggestion from Giuseppe Castagno
http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg03726.html

Castagno's code shows a FilterData indirection, so my code now looks
like:

filterOptions = (
PropertyValue( ExportFormFields, 0, False, 0),
)

outProps = (
PropertyValue( FilterName , 0, filterName , 0 ),
PropertyValue( FilterData, 0, filterOptions, 0 ),
PropertyValue( Overwrite , 0, True , 0 ),
PropertyValue( OutputStream, 0, OutputStream(), 0),
)

but the resulting .pdf still has the form controls. It's distinctly
different from what I get via the GUI, which has different shaped
X's in the checkbox controls.

Help?

The forum post shows work-arounds involving post-processing
the PDF with some iText Java library, but I'd really rather not go there.

This is the output of:

it exhibits the problem: I want it to have no form controls,
but it has form controls.
