[Bug 1553563] Re: bconsole to Bacula Director fails with authorization problem message

2016-09-13 Thread Daniel Curran-Dickinson
Version 7.0.5+dfsg-4ubuntu0.1 from -proposed solves the issues of local
bacula-console failing to connect to Director for me. It also solves
remote bacula-console-qt failing to connect to the same director
(without upgrading bacula-console-qt, only the director host has
-proposed package).

[Bug 1571918] Re: Constant high cpu usage in xenial under qxl/spice

2016-06-15 Thread Daniel Curran-Dickinson
It turns out this is because of a kernel bug (see https://www.mail-
archive.com/linux-ker...@vger.kernel.org/msg1152720.html).

A workaround to to add qxl.modeset=0 in /etc/default/grub for the kernel
commandline. After update-grub and reboot CPU usage is back to being
reasonable.

This also fixes the problem mentioned in the above email thread where
even when using virt-viewer QXL multihead fails to report more than one
availble display.

With qxl.modeset=0 virt-viewer correctly allows you to turn on up to
four virtual displays.

Re: [Bug 1571145] Re: After update-manager -d crash apport reports report is damaged 'incorrect padding'

2016-05-03 Thread Daniel Curran-Dickinson
Unfortunately, I've since reinstalled that vm after having found a
workaround to get xenial installed only to discover that in a kvm vm
with qxl/spice compiz chews up huge amounts of cpu (I've reported a bug
in launchpad about that) and consequently reinstalled the vm, so I no
longer have the .crash (and didn't know about it before to include it,
and apport wasn't working, obviously).

Regards,

Daniel

[Bug 1571918] [NEW] Constant high cpu usage in xenial under qxl/spice

2016-04-18 Thread Daniel Curran-Dickinson
Public bug reported:

Both VMs that I upgraded to Xenial experience constant high cpu usage,
and top reports compiz is by far the high user of cpu.

The high cpu usage is more apparent from outside the machine, were host
reports guests are using close (or over at times) to 200% cpu, than in
the guests which are reporting 60-100% cpu (multicore VM) for compiz,
constantly.

The VMs are using the QXL video driver and are using a spice channel for
virt-manager / virt-viewer.

[Bug 1571915] [NEW] Header cpu %'s don't match reality or per-process usage

2016-04-18 Thread Daniel Curran-Dickinson
Public bug reported:

The header of top (i.e the part that looks as below) is frequently
reporting unlikely result. With high load it is reporting mostly idle,
even though the per-process cpu usage is reporting multiple processes
with 100% and one with 200% cpu usage on a multicore machine.

The numbers don't make sense and don't match the kind of numbers
reported in trusty.

There is clearly some funkiness in what the header is reporting.

Re: [Bug 1571511] Re: hplip not compatible with cups, dbus in xenial

2016-04-18 Thread Daniel Curran-Dickinson
It appears that in both xenial and trusty the hpcups ppds do not work
for some models (e.g. officejet j4500 series which uses deskjet 6500c as
cups model type).

On trusty hpijs ppd does work, but the hpcups ppd fails. Based on
comparing the ppds, it appears that there is a difference in what the
manufacturer/model name passed in the gs command line looks like.

This is consistent with the web search results mentioning ghostscript as
the one complaining about the device (i.e. at debug level the cups logs
show ghostscript failing to open bbox, but that's probably the wrong
device due to an error in command line that ends up getting used).

I will attempt to reproduce on a system from which I can pull the logs.

Re: [Bug 1571511] Re: hplip not compatible with cups, dbus in xenial

2016-04-18 Thread Daniel Curran-Dickinson
For the record, the hp-doctor output *may* be a red herring. It turns
out there was a typo in a directive in my cupsd.conf (from a bad edit).

It is possible (although not certain) that the hp-doctor/hp-check
reports of incompatible/missing version is not showing the root cause,
but is an issue with hp-doctor/hp-check that needs to be addressed to
avoid user confusion.

However, it may actually be a version problem as I discovered the typo
after reinstalling with 14.04.4 and getting a different error from
hp-setup and seeing the directive error in /var/log/cups/error_log
(which was probably also in the xenial logs, but masked by the fact that
hp-setup appeared to work and that other errors appeared later (closer
to the faulty result).

On Trusty cups refused to even start, leading to finding the issue, on
Xenial things appeared to succeed until actual printing failed.

Regards,

Daniel

[Bug 1571511] [NEW] hplip not compatible with cups, dbus in xenial

2016-04-18 Thread Daniel Curran-Dickinson
Public bug reported:

The hplip in xenial is not compatible with the versions of cups and dbus
(and various other libraries) in xenial.

The initial symptoms were that after running hp-setup -i (text mode only
box), and attempting to print a test page from hplip, there was no
output. After cancelling that job from http://:631/... and
attempting to print another test page from the CUPS interface, CUPS
reporter 'filter failed'.

Reviewing error_log revealed the message 'unable to open inital device.
quitting'.

While this *sounds* like a device error, hp-levels and hp-clean both
work, so clearly the issue is not with access to the usb device (and the
appropriate /dev/bus/usb/*/* device has group lp and group rw
permissions).

Also some web searching reveals that this can be caused by e.g.
ghostscript errors and is not necessarily indicative of an hardware
device access issue.

Running hp-doctor gives the attached result

hplip version 3.16.3+repack0-1
cups 2.1.3-4
dbus 1.10.6-1ubuntu3

On an up-to-date as of 2016-04-18 01:00:00 -0400 Xenial system installed
from final beta alternate CD.

[Bug 1571170] [NEW] nouveau with triple head = blank screen

2016-04-16 Thread Daniel Curran-Dickinson
Public bug reported:

Unfortunately apport can't report from the right driver because nouveau
ends up with a blank screen when running with three heads, and removing
one or two doesn't recover without a reboot, and with a single head the
system fails to get to a useable state because either unity or some
other gui thing launches on boot repeatedly crashes.
