[Bug 1890924] Re: Location services work with location services off, 20.04

I can also confirm the comment from NoBugs! (luke32j) that no apps
appear to have requested location access in privacy settings even though
they have location access

[Bug 1890924] Re: Location services work with location services off, 20.04

2021-03-15 Thread Daniel Fore
I installed GeoClue 2.5.6-0ubuntu1.1 from proposed including the dev and
demo packages. I cannot confirm that this fixes the issue as described
in the test case above using the where-am-i demo and Pantheon's polkit
agent

I then tried with GNOME Maps both from deb packaging and from Flatpak
and both were able to access my location while location services were
disabled

I also tried using the agent demo from geoclue-2-demo, and both where-
am-i and GNOME maps were able to access location without permission
while location services were marked disabled

[Bug 1915315] [NEW] Add elementary Files to AppArmor profiles

2021-02-10 Thread Daniel Fore
Public bug reported:

Currently there some exceptions in the apparmor profiles for common file
browsers, but this list does not include elementary Files:

```
  # 'Show Containing Folder' (LP: #1022962)
  /usr/bin/nautilus Cx -> sanitized_helper, # Gnome
  /usr/bin/pcmanfm Cx -> sanitized_helper,  # LXDE
  /usr/bin/krusader Cx -> sanitized_helper, # KDE
  /usr/bin/thunar Cx -> sanitized_helper,   # XFCE
```

We're currently patching this in:

```
  /usr/bin/io.elementary.files Cx -> sanitized_helper, # Pantheon
```

Would be great if it was included upstream! :)

As of Artful, it seems that there are still patches against various apps

Now that GNOME Shell is default in Ubuntu and there is better support
for client-side decorations, these patches can probably go away

[Bug 1300046] Re: ia32-libs and more are missing sometimes

2015-05-24 Thread Daniel Fore
From Ask Ubuntu:

The ia32-libs package was a hack to get 32-bit packages installed on a
64-bit installation. Since Ubuntu version 11.10 (Oneiric), Multi Arch
has been added. One of the objectives for it is removing the ia32-libs
package. Instead, you have to install the 32-bit libraries of a package
with:

sudo apt-get install package-name:i386

[Bug 1379005] [NEW] use pan-down-symbolic for message menu

2014-10-08 Thread Daniel Fore
Public bug reported:

instead of go-down-symbolic, the icon pan-down-symbolic should be
used for the menu that appears on each individual message.

This is a new icon introduced fairly recently in Adwaita and elementary

[Bug 1379015] [NEW] Be more conservative about sidebar number badges

2014-10-08 Thread Daniel Fore
Public bug reported:

At the moment, every sidebar entry seems to be able to have sidebar
badges. This is very distracting and not particularly useful, imo.

Overall, I feel like sidebar badges are a call to action. They alert me
that some action needs to be taken inside a folder. For things like
Inbox and Drafts this is very important information. However, for
many folders, there is no action to be taken.

For example: Trash, Sent, Starred, and Spam all alert me. While I guess
spam is kind of arguable, if I'd trashed something, sent something, or
starred something, I think it's safe to assume that no further immediate
action needs to be taken. The message has been sorted at this point.

[Bug 1379015] Re: Be more conservative about sidebar number badges

2014-10-08 Thread Daniel Fore
Hey Jim, I think we're agreeing about what the badge means, but not what
that implies :p

I feel like having 160 todo items in my trash is a little counter-
intuitive. Even taking into account filters (of which I do have a few),
I think that by setting up a filter to automatically trash certain types
of mail means I'm not really concerned with reading those mails.

I'm also really confused about how/why I could possibly have unread
messages (or todo items or however you'd like to refer to them) in my
Sent folder. My only guess is that Geary is picking up unread messages
in conversations that I'm involved in. Which again, I think is a little
counter-intuitive since I'm looking in my Sent folder for things that
I have sent, not really for unread messages in a conversation.

This may only be a problem for someone like my that has a very very high
volume of mail. But I find the current situation extremely distracting.
It's kind of stressful to see that I have almost 13,000 things that need
my attention in All Mail (which I believe is my archive? But I'm
really not sure what All Mail means).

For what it's worth, it looks like (out of the default tags/folders)
only Inbox Drafts and Spam show unread message counts in Gmail, in
addition of course to custom tags/folders.

To be clear, my concern isn't about visual design :) Just about only
showing these badges in places where my attention is actually required.

There are both of these icons present in elementary. Check the
status/symbolic folder.

As far as I can tell, the indicator will use bluetooth, bluetooth-
active, and bluetooth-disabled but it won't use the -symbolic
variants.

[Bug 931387] Re: Elementary prevents pidgin from showing status in the tray

2012-03-05 Thread Daniel Fore
I'm not sure where you get anything about Ubuntu-specific naming. There
are icon names outlined in the FreeDesktop.org spec here
http://standards.freedesktop.org/icon-naming-spec/icon-naming-
spec-0.4.html

user-away
user-idle
user-offline
user-online

These are all standardized names. I wouldn't recommend adding Ubuntu's
-panel suffix. But I would recommend supporting the -symbolic suffix
only for the panel icon.

If the standard doesn't include states that pidgin requires, I would
suggest conforming to the standard convention as in

user-busy
