When I try to install gcc (gcc-7) in a fresh copy of Ubuntu 18.04.1, I
get a "Redirection loop encountered" error for the libitm1 package. An
update of the package list does not help with the issue.

The v3.4-precise kernel (May 21, 2012) does not fix this bug either.

The v3.4-rc7-precise directory does not contain image packages. I have
tried the kernel v3.4-rc6 but it does not fix this bug. Have I used the
correct kernel version?

I have a Toshiba Satellite L755-1NT and when I boot up Ubuntu 12.04 it hangs 
for 70 seconds and then moves on to
successfully boot system. I can avoid the wait booting up with the acpi=off 
option but that removes lots of functionality from the laptop (battery 
information, automatic shutdown and more) which is annoying.
