[Bug 1261175] Re: [wishlist] F2FS missing in Ubiquity Use as partition option

2013-12-30 Thread Daniel Swarbrick
Any such d-i component is going to have to warn that the partition on
which /boot resides cannot be f2fs, since grub does not support booting
from f2fs yet.

I'd certainly be interested in seeing f2fs get more support. Since
Samsung make most of the world's flash memory, they're probably in a
good position to determine how filesystems should interact with that
flash memory.

[Bug 937537] Re: libgnutls26 2.12.14 breaks SSL tracker support in Transmission

2012-07-17 Thread Daniel Swarbrick
I just did a clean install of quantal from a daily ISO (2012-07-17), and
notice that Transmission is having no problem connecting to the SSL
tracker that was the original reason for opening this bug.

It appears that this entry from the libgnutls26 package changelog fixes
the issue:

gnutls26 (2.12.14-5ubuntu3.1) precise-proposed; urgency=low

  * Apply upstream patch to fix validation of certificates when more than
one with the same short hash exists in the CA bundle (LP: #1003841).

 -- Thorsten Glaser t...@mirbsd.de Thu, 24 May 2012 11:19:12 +0200

I guess this bug could theoretically be closed, since that update is now
in precise-updates and quantal.

[Bug 975360] [NEW] shell-recorder does not close file when recording is stopped

2012-04-06 Thread Daniel Swarbrick
Public bug reported:

According to https://live.gnome.org/GnomeShell/CheatSheet the GS
screencast tool can be started and stopped with the key combination
Control+Shift+Alt+R. I've found that stopping a recording does not close
the file that is being recorded to (visible in the output of `lsof |
grep webm`).

If I press Control+Shift+Alt+R again, instead of incrementing a counter
and starting a recording to a new file, as the docs state, the recording
is appended to the previous file (even if it has since been moved
somewhere else). It definitely appears as if the file descriptor is not
being closed, and shell-recorder is in fact pausing the the recording,
rather than stopping it. See http://developer.gnome.org/shell/unstable
/shell-shell-recorder.html

Another thing to note is that when playing back the recorded .webm file,
VLC shoes 0:00 as the recording length, eg. it appears unable to
determine the length, as if the file is incomplete... or was never
closed properly.

[Bug 937537] Re: libgnutls26 2.12.14 breaks SSL tracker support in Transmission

2012-02-21 Thread Daniel Swarbrick
SSL trackers are fairly rare, and I was only able to test with one
particular (private) tracker. I can't say for sure whether this is a
general SSL bug, or something that only affects my particular tracker.

I suspect it has something to do with the less mainstream CA that signed
the trackers cert, and I would not be too surprised if this entry from
the gnutls 2.12.15 changelog is the culprit:

** libgnutls: Disable signature algorithms that are not supported
for client certificate verification. Reported by Florian Weimer.

In any case, the differences between 2.12.14 and 2.12.16 seem to be
negligible.

[Bug 937537] [NEW] libgnutls26 2.12.14 breaks SSL tracker support in Transmission

[Bug 913050] Re: Explicit APM values in hdparm-functions cause Load Cycle Count hell

2012-02-04 Thread Daniel Swarbrick
My SAMSUNG HM251JJ also suffers this problem.

If hdparm sets -B128, it sticks:

sudo hdparm -B128 /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
setting Advanced Power Management level to 0x80 (128)
 APM_level  = 128

And as per the hdparm manpage, it does not spin down. Ever.

But if it sets -B127, the hard disk assumes a value of 1:

sudo hdparm -B127 /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
setting Advanced Power Management level to 0x7f (127)
 APM_level  = 1

And it starts to spin down a lot more than it should, sometimes even
during disk reads!

[Bug 900190] Re: roundcube can not connect to sqlite database after upgrade from natty to oneiric

2012-01-23 Thread Daniel Swarbrick
It appears that the last few versions of php5-sqlite have not included
sqlite.so, which is required by the php-mdb2-driver-sqlite package.
There is an unofficial mdb2 driver that uses the PDO sqlite extension,
which may work, however roundcube also needs to be patched in order to
use that unofficial mdb2 driver.

This bug has just affected me on a Debian Wheezy system. It appears that
Debian shipped sqlite.so in php5-sqlite up until 5.3.8, but as my system
just pulled a 5.3.9 package of php5-sqlite, roundcube now can't connect
to the sqlite DB.

Ubuntu seems to have omitted sqlite.so from their php5-sqlite packages
for a while longer than Debian has.

[Bug 821728] Re: Increasing hdd performance: Swap partition should be at the beginning of the hard disk drive

2011-10-15 Thread Daniel Swarbrick
I think these claims need to be backed up by quantitative data. The
relative position of a swap partition might have been an important
factor 10 years ago on slow hard disks in computers with little RAM.
However, with most modern PCs shipping with at least 4GB RAM and fast
hard disks with 32MB on-disk cache, I doubt that the average user would
notice the difference where the swap partition was located.

[Bug 844957] Re: Safely removing external (usb) hdd's can cause a kernel panic or system freeze

2011-10-11 Thread Daniel Swarbrick
Is this already fixed by upstream 3.0.5 or 3.0.6, as stated in the
Debian package changelog?

[Bug 844957] Re: Safely removing external (usb) hdd's can cause a kernel panic or system freeze

2011-09-28 Thread Daniel Swarbrick
Confirmed again here also. Tested with a WD 1TB My Passport drive,
formatted with a single NTFS partition. Kernel panic on very first
attempt to remove it.

Have we ascertained whether this bug is specific to drives containing an
NTFS partition? I saw that theory being bounced around earlier.

[Bug 833508] Re: Lightning is incompatible with Thunderbird 7.0

2011-08-29 Thread Daniel Swarbrick
I updated to TB 7.0 to resolve the address book editing issue
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/thunderbird/+bug/833591) but
after trying many, many different nightly and tinderbox builds of
Lightning, none of them work properly. Their install.rdf indicates that
they're compatible with TB 7.0, so of course they install ok, but the
calendar display is simply just an empty grid - no dates, no names of
weekdays, and no events from my calendar populated on the grid.

Task list is also completely empty, although I definitely have tasks in
my calendar.

Downgrading again to TB 6 for the moment - I edit my calendar more often
than I edit my address book ;-)

[Bug 820460] Re: User not created with encrypted home partition: user-setup exit code 32

2011-08-15 Thread Daniel Swarbrick
I still had problems with an amd64-alternate installer from 2011-08-15.
I don't have the installer logs, but it appeared that the installer
kernel did not support ecryptfs (not shown in /proc/filesystems) and
there was no ecryptfs.ko to be found. When user-setup tried to create
the ecryptfs home dir, it naturally failed.

I managed to work around this upon the second attempt by chdir'ing into
the target install's /lib/modules directory, and manually insmod'ing the
ecryptfs.ko before responding to the debconf question, whether I wanted
to encrypt my home directory. That seemed to work ok.

However, after rebooting into the new install, lightdm fails to
transition to the desktop after entering the password. If I switch to
another text mode vty and log in, it mounts my ecryptfs home dir fine,
and if I then switch back to lightdm and log in graphically, that also
succeeds. So it would appear that lightdm has problems mounting the
ecryptfs directory.

This is probably unrelated to the original bug, but I found that
installing gdm and setting it as the default login manager, I was then
able to successfully log in (and the ecryptfs home dir was successfully
mounted). Not too surprising, since lightdm is still under heavy
development from what I've seen.

[Bug 684599] Re: Memory leak in nm-applet

2011-01-26 Thread Daniel Swarbrick
I have icons displayed (using gnome classic desktop). I'm also fairly
convinced (as I've pointed out several times in this report already)
that the rate of the memory leak is exacerbated when on a WiFi
connection. I use a wired ethernet connection at work, and the leak is
barely perceptible. However at home, on my WiFi connection, nm-applet
memory usage can easily get into the hundreds of megabytes after a full
day.

I think this has to do with the fact that the icon is not updating when
on a wired connection, whereas the icon is updated as the WiFi signal
strength fluctuates.

[Bug 684599] Re: Memory leak in nm-applet

2011-01-07 Thread Daniel Swarbrick
Mathieu,

I have just updated to that latest version. The GLib-GObject-WARNING in
~/.xsession-errors seems to have stopped, although I'm testing on a
different AP (which is literally in a rack right behind me, so the
signal strength may not be fluctuating at all). I will check again when
I get home.

I'm not convinced that the memory leak in nm-applet is resolved however,
since I've watched it slowly increase from a memory usage of 5.3 to 5.6
MB, just while writing this comment. I'll check that again in an hour or
so, and if it hasn't substantially increased from its current memory
footprint, I'll update this bug again.

2011-01-07 Thread Daniel Swarbrick
Ok, well it's been running for about an hour, and memory utilization has
increased from 5.3 MB to 11.1 MB. If it keeps leaking at this rate, it
will use close to a gigabyte after 7 days. Fortunately it's a notebook,
and never turned on for more than about 16 hours at a stretch.

I'm also now getting errors like the following, in ~/.xsession-errors:

[Bug 684599] Re: Memory leak in nm-applet

2011-01-06 Thread Daniel Swarbrick
ii network-manager
0.8.3+git.20101219t181118.e919218-0ubuntu1 network management framework daemon
ii network-manager-gnome
0.8.3+git.20101209t081952.0330eca-0ubuntu2 network management framework (GNOME
frontend)

I think this problem is pretty easy to reproduce. Do the devs / bug
marshalls all have wired connections? Maybe they're not seeing this bug
because of that. It just needs to be tested on a WiFi connection, whose
signal strength fluctuates a little bit and you'll basically get
something like this each time the signal strength icon refreshes:

(nm-applet:1646): Gtk-CRITICAL **: IA__gtk_image_get_storage_type:
assertion `GTK_IS_IMAGE (image)' failed

(nm-applet:1646): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: invalid (NULL) pointer
instance

(nm-applet:1646): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_signal_connect_data:
assertion `G_TYPE_CHECK_INSTANCE (instance)' failed

(nm-applet:1646): Gtk-CRITICAL **: IA__gtk_image_get_storage_type:
assertion `GTK_IS_IMAGE (image)' failed

(nm-applet:1646): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: invalid (NULL) pointer
instance

(nm-applet:1646): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_signal_connect_data:
assertion `G_TYPE_CHECK_INSTANCE (instance)' failed

I say refreshes in quotes, because the icon doesn't actually refresh.
It shows full signal strength the whole time, and I know that is not
true. I also noticed a while back that the radiating semi-circles icon
no longer pulsates during the WiFi connect stage, like it used to. It's
just static, and then blam, you're connected.

These are all reasons why I think the code that updates the icon in the
panel is broken.

[Bug 676624] Re: Panel applets randomly fail to start.

2011-01-04 Thread Daniel Swarbrick
I've searched, and this seems to be the best bug to add a me too to.
At most logins (classic desktop), I typically get the trash applet,
window switcher, clock, and indicator applet fail to load, with an error
message along the lines of Clock applet quit unexpectedly.

With each applet that fails to load, the line:

** (gnome-panel:1748): WARNING **: Operation was cancelled

appears twice in ~/.xsession-errors

This has been going on for about 6 weeks now, and I guess it's because
the developers are focusing on Unity that this problem has got so little
attention. It's starting to drive me mad though, and I'm not far off
flagging natty is too buggy to even test right now, and going back to a
stable release.

[Bug 684599] Re: Memory leak in nm-applet

2011-01-03 Thread Daniel Swarbrick
This is still a problem. Whatever is referring to a null pointer is now
somewhere else in the code, as the line number has changed.

(nm-applet:1939): Gtk-CRITICAL **: IA__gtk_image_get_storage_type:
assertion `GTK_IS_IMAGE (image)' failed

(nm-applet:1939): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: invalid (NULL) pointer
instance

(nm-applet:1939): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_signal_connect_data:
assertion `G_TYPE_CHECK_INSTANCE (instance)' failed

What are the requirements to build nm-applet from source? I'm thinking
of rolling up my sleeves and fixing this one myself.

[Bug 606706] Re: [maverick] HD spins down all the time on AC

2010-09-12 Thread Daniel Swarbrick
It definitely appears as though the Spin down hard disks when possible
on the On Battery Power tab of the power management applet is not
being respected. I have the option unchecked, and can observe the
following:

dan...@thinkpad:~$ sudo hdparm -B /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
 APM_level  = 254

(remove AC)

dan...@thinkpad:~$ sudo hdparm -B /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
 APM_level  = 1

If I manually sudo hdparm -B 254 /dev/sda after going to battery mode,
then the hard disk obviously stops the incessant and overly ambitious
spinning down.

I'm all for spinning down disks when on battery power, but if I
specifically uncheck that option in the power management applet, it
should be honoured. Also, when spinning down disks, something a bit more
sensible like a 2 or 5 minute idle period would be better (can we have
this adjustable maybe?)

2010-05-16 Thread Daniel Swarbrick
I ran Lucid alpha/daily installs since about January IIRC, and am 99%
sure that the flicker problem first occurred with kernel image 2.6.32-16
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=8942276postcount=9). It's
possible that the problem has been fixed upstream in 2.6.34 (or .33
even), but if you're looking to find the culprit, there will be far
fewer differences between the two Ubuntu packages of 2.6.32-15 and
2.6.32-16, than a complete different kernel version.

[Bug 554079] Re: Lucid boot failed to complete after fsck

2010-04-07 Thread Daniel Swarbrick
This problem has hit me twice recently. The first time (iirc) I was able
to ctrl-alt-del at the Plymouth screen, and upon reboot it briefly
flashed the fsck message again but booted successfully. The second time
was just this morning (with a fully up to date system), and I had to
ctrl-alt-f2 to get to a TTY and log into a shell. A ps -ef | grep fsck
indicated no instances of it hanging around, so it appears that fsck is
not to blame. I then did a sudo reboot and once again it managed to
boot successfully.

[Bug 431178] Re: xorg is slow since new upstart

2009-09-18 Thread Daniel Swarbrick
The main issue is these lines in your XorgLog:

(EE) intel(0): [drm] Failed to open DRM device for : No such file or directory
(EE) intel(0): Failed to become DRM master.

I've been seeing this bug occasionally on my system too, since the new
upstart stuff. When booting, KMS fails to set the mode, so I see boot
messages in low-res text mode. GDM then starts, but as you say, X is
very slow, and I think you'll also find that anything that tries to use
DRM (eg. playing a movie in Totem or VLC) will cause X to crash.

Somebody else reported similar problems as part of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/udev/+bug/430654 and it was
suggested that a separate bug report be opened. I'm not sure if this is
that separate bug report

[Bug 430654] Re: udev 147 outputs warnings about default rules

2009-09-18 Thread Daniel Swarbrick
With respect to the /dev/dri issue, I see that happening too, and it
coincided with the appearance of these udev error messages. Without DRM,
X is very, very slow. This happens on my system about once in every five
boots I don't know whether the failure to create /dev/dri nodes are
linked to the udev errors, or whether I'm just not seeing the error
messages when KMS is successfully enabled. They seem to go hand in hand
at the moment though.

[Bug 329881] [NEW] Weather applet uses defunct station for Berlin weather

2009-02-15 Thread Daniel Swarbrick
Public bug reported:

When Berlin is selected as a location in Gnome's weather applet or clock
applet, it hits the URL http://weather.noaa.gov/cgi-
bin/mgetmetar.pl?=EDDI which is the Tempelhof weather station. Since
Tempelhof airport closed on Oct 30 last year, it's not very surprising
that the last weather report for that station is on that same day.

Up until fairly recently, the weather applet showed three choices for
Berlin - Tegel, Tempelhof, and Schoenefeld. Now it only shows one
choice, and just happens to be using the defunct Tempelhof weather
station. It was certainly a little surprising to see it reporting 4° C
for the last month or so, day and night, even when it was snowing
outside.

The next best station for Berlin would probably be Tegel, which is
station code EDDT.

[Bug 274085] Re: Please update Ekiga to 3.00

2009-01-10 Thread Daniel Swarbrick
Any chance of getting 3.10 in Jaunty? CELT and G.722 support has been
added.

http://mail.gnome.org/archives/ekiga-devel-
list/2009-January/msg00052.html

Since Empathy seems to always crash when calling GTalk buddies, Ekiga
(on Windows too) looks like a possible alternative.

[Bug 314378] [NEW] RTC inaccessible on HP ProLiant ML350 G5

2009-01-06 Thread Daniel Swarbrick
Public bug reported:

RTC device doesn't appear in /dev, and various other symptoms indicate
absence of RTC device

r...@vmhost2:~# lsmod | grep rtc

r...@vmhost2:~# dmesg | grep rtc
[1.992386] platform rtc_cmos: registered platform RTC device (no PNP device
found)

r...@vmhost2:~# hwclock -w --debug
hwclock from util-linux-ng 2.14
hwclock: Open of /dev/rtc failed, errno=2: No such file or directory.
No usable clock interface found.
Cannot access the Hardware Clock via any known method.

I suspect the Ubuntu kernel is lacking some of the very recent upstream
patches that (maybe) resolve this issue.

[Bug 309762] Re: initramfs fails to mount ext4 root partition or provide user intervention (even when ext4 module is available in the image)

2009-01-01 Thread Daniel Swarbrick
An even simpler solution is to append rootfstype=ext4 to kopt in
/boot/grub/menu.list, eg.

# kopt=root=UUID=24c707be-c824-4781-89bd-25ed9dba54f8 ro rootfstype=ext4

Then just run sudo update-grub. No custom initramfs scripts needed.

following four rules. I didn't add them myself.

00 * * * * root[ -x /usr/sbin/update-motd ] /usr/sbin/update-motd
hourly 2/dev/null
* 06 * * *  root[ -x /usr/sbin/update-motd ]  /usr/sbin/update-motd

[Bug 309762] Re: initramfs fails to mount ext4 root partition or provide user intervention (even when ext4 module is available in the image)

2008-12-31 Thread Daniel Swarbrick
Just to confirm, the custom_mount_ext4 script is only needed in local-
bottom.

Also, the `modprobe ext4` is not needed, since it's compiled into the
kernel now. However, it's probably wise to using `-t ext4` as the mount
option.

#! /bin/sh
mount -t ext4 /dev/sda1 /root
mount -t ext4 /dev/disk/by-uuid/.. /root

Works like a charm for me.

[Bug 312809] [NEW] crontab entries are incorrect

2008-12-31 Thread Daniel Swarbrick
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-motd

Somebody needs to do a bit of basic sysadmin reading.

* 06 * * *  root[ -x /usr/sbin/update-motd ]  /usr/sbin
/update-motd daily 2/dev/null

The above entry will execute every minute, daily, from 06:00 until
06:59.

* * * * 1   root[ -x /usr/sbin/update-motd ]  /usr/sbin
/update-motd weekly 2/dev/null

The above entry will execute every every minute of every hour on
Mondays.

* * 1 * *   root[ -x /usr/sbin/update-motd ]  /usr/sbin
/update-motd monthly 2/dev/null

And the above entry will execute every minute of every hour, on the
first day of every month.

[Bug 284408] Re: r3xx Hardware does not work with fglrx [EPR#257839]

2008-11-14 Thread Daniel Swarbrick
Mario,

The fglrx errors I pasted in my previous response are from dmesg. I did
not go as far as installing the Xorg fglrx driver via the restricted
drivers manager, since it screws up to much other stuff and is a PITA to
revert. I just installed fglrx-kernel-source and watched DKMS do it's
thing, then rebooted in rescue mode, dropped to a shell and modprobed
fglrx.

`dpkg -l` says I have version 8.552-0ubuntu0.1 of fglrx-kernel-source,
which was installed from intrepid-proposed repos.

[Bug 212280] Re: cups-pdf printer not generating PDF file.

2008-09-06 Thread Daniel Swarbrick
I found that it fails if you don't have a 'PDF' directory in your home
directory (since the default cups-pdf config is to print to ~/PDF).

You can get away with permissions of 0701 on your home directory. The
main thing is that other users have at least +x permission, so that
cups-pdf can at least navigate to the 'PDF' directory within. This isn't
as bad as 0777 on your home directory, because, even though other users
will be able to chdir to your home dir, they won't be able to list the
contents, or read/write/delete any files. If they guess directory names
(ie, 'Documents'), they may be able to read stuff within those
directories, depending on the dir/file permissions.
