[Bug 1987228] Re: Bug display when turning to hibernation

2022-09-11 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks. I can't see obvious signs of a crash there but it does mention
the Mesa "crocus" driver is in use. That is the correct driver but I
expect you will hit bug 1972977 periodically, which would definitely
cause the symptoms described here.

Bug 1972977 is fixed in Ubuntu 22.10 but not yet in 22.04.

[Bug 1987228] Re: Bug display when turning to hibernation

2022-08-25 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Unfortunately the link in comment #5 is the crash reporting tool
crashing. Reviewing the list of all crash reports from the same machine
shows no shell crashes since April 2021.

Please try removing any extensions you might have:

  cd ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/
  rm -rf extensions

and then log in again. If the bug still occurs after that then next time
it happens please run:

  journalctl -b0 > journal.txt

and attach the resulting text file here.

being tracked in bug 1782984.

This bug is separate. If you can't reproduce this bug anymore then it
will close automatically after two months (unless more comments are
added).

[Bug 1975872] Re: [ASUS GL552VW] Screen flickering on external monitor

2022-05-27 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks. I don't see anything relevant in those logs.

Next please:

1. Tell us if logging into 'Ubuntu on Xorg' fixes the flicker.

2. Attach a video of the problem.

3. Try the workaround mentioned in bug 1958191.

4. Try a different HDMI cable if you can find one, in case it's just
below spec for 1080p + 60Hz + whatever colour depth the kernel is using.
Such problems may manifest in Linux but not in Windows due to signalling
differences.

[Bug 1975884] Re: Temporary screen freeze on gnome screen lock (wayland, ubuntu 22.04 jammy)

2022-05-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for the bug report. I can see from the attached files that you
have a lot of unsupported extensions enabled and at least some of them
are buggy according to the log messages.

The first thing to try is always to REMOVE ALL unsupported extensions
and then log in again. Please run:

  cd ~/.local/share/gnome-shell
  rm -rf extensions
  gsettings set org.gnome.shell enabled-extensions "[]"
  gsettings set org.gnome.shell disabled-extensions "[]"

and then log in again.

If the freeze persists after that then next time it happens please:

  1. Wait 10 seconds.

  2. Reboot.

  3. Run: journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt

  4. Attach the resulting text file here.

Thanks for the detailed info. From that moment on I can see the system
resuming including Xorg waking up but no errors are logged at all.

Are you able to ssh into the frozen machine from another machine? I
would like to know what 'ps auxw' reports at that point.

Also if the mouse cursor is frozen then the bug is lower level than
gnome-shell so this is either in Xorg, the Nvidia Xorg driver, or the
kernel.

[Bug 1948410] Re: [nvidia] Software cursor in Wayland sessions (EGLStreams)

2022-05-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
** Description changed:

  Impact
  --
In the Wayland session with older Nvidia graphics (usually nvidia driver
470), a software cursor is used instead of a hardware cursor. This causes worse
performance with unnecessary updates of the display.

  Test Case
  -
- To see it just add this to /etc/environment:

- MUTTER_DEBUG_FORCE_EGL_STREAM=1
-   CLUTTER_PAINT=damage-region
+ 1. Set up an Nvidia-only desktop. No other GPUs active. Driver version
+ must be 470 or higher.

- and reboot.
+ 2. Add this to /etc/environment:
+
+    MUTTER_DEBUG_FORCE_EGL_STREAM=1
+    CLUTTER_PAINT=damage-region
+
+ 3. Reboot.
+
+ 4. Log into 'Ubuntu on Wayland'.
+
+ Observed: The red and blue boxes from the above debugging option follow
+ the mouse cursor.
+
+ Expected: No red and blue boxes follow the mouse cursor.

[Bug 1967121] Re: Dock auto-hides when a right click context menu is opened while a window is under the dock

2022-05-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
** Description changed:

- Currently testing a fresh install of the beta for 22.04.
- All packages are up to date.
+ [Impact]

- When having the dock auto-hide option enabled, a glitch occurs when opening
the windows selector (when multiple instances of the same program are opened).
- The selector does open, but the dock will hide itself immediately instead of
waiting for a selection. Selecting a window will then cause a glitch where the
selector will align with the hidden dock in a non natural way before
disappearing.
+ If the dock is set to auto-hide and a window is under the dock, then the
+ dock hides prematurely when a menu is opened from one of its icons. This
+ only seems to happen with GNOME 42.

- A proposed fix would be to prevent the dock from auto-hiding when the
- miniatures selector opens and wait for a second input.
+ [Test Plan]
+
+ 1. Set the dock to auto hide.
+ 2. Move a window under the dock's position so that it wants to auto-hide.
+ 3. Open the dock and right click on one of the icons to open a menu.
+
+ Expected: Dock stays open while the menu is open.
+ Observed: Dock closes while the menu is open.
+
+ [Where problems could occur]
+
+ This fix may affect any scenarios relating to the dock auto-hiding.

[Bug 1975566] Re: radeon / amdgpu bad performance or panics

2022-05-25 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Oh I see you started with Ubuntu Server.

Please:

1. Don't disable Wayland. Wayland should be enabled.

2. Answer the previous question: After you have switched back to a
'stock' config and kernel, what does vulkaninfo report?

3. Try booting desktop Ubuntu from USB:
https://ubuntu.com/download/desktop If that just works then we're
probably wasting time here figuring out how to un-customise this server
install. Just install desktop instead.

[Bug 1975650] Re: Display stuck in low resolution

2022-05-25 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for the bug report. It appears your Nvidia kernel driver is not
loading anymore so low resolution is expected. This may have been caused
by a recent kernel update. Please try this:

  sudo apt install --reinstall nvidia-driver-510/jammy
  sudo apt install --reinstall nvidia-dkms-510/jammy

and then reboot.

[Bug 1975566] Re: radeon / amdgpu bad performance or panics

I don't know much about AMD GPUs but from what I've seen there is
usually only one kernel graphics driver that works for a given GPU.

After you have switched back to a 'stock' config and kernel, what does
vulkaninfo report? Does the "bad performance" persist?

[Bug 1975557] Re: blank screen does not turn off display backlight

2022-05-25 Thread Daniel van Vugt
The difference between 21.10 and 22.04 might just be that we now default
to Wayland instead of Xorg. So the display subsystems are different.

Please run this command to gather more information:

  apport-collect 1975557

And to save time in future please use the 'ubuntu-bug' command to report
new bugs.

If the problem is not bug 1965563 then please check for crashes by
following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Responses#Missing_a_crash_report_or_having_a_.crash_attachment

If the problem is not a crash but a hang then please turn it into a
crash report by sending the process a fatal signal like 'kill -ABRT ...'
and then follow the above link.

[Bug 1975566] Re: radeon / amdgpu bad performance or panics

2022-05-24 Thread Daniel van Vugt
OK so multiple problems there, which may have the same root cause:

* Your shell/compositor seems to be causing stalling.

* vulkaninfo says your GPU is "not using the AMDGPU kernel driver:
Invalid argument (VK_ERROR_INCOMPATIBLE_DRIVER)"

Sounds fundamentally like the kernel graphics driver isn't working.
Please try the supported Ubuntu kernel instead.

Also what desktop environment is this?

[Bug 1974471] Re: mouse becomes laggy when fractional scaling is enabled

2022-05-23 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Hmm one second delay is a bigger and different issue to bug 1902436.

I've never seen anyone use Xorg fractional scaling on Raspberry Pi
before but I would expect it to be super slow. Because Xorg fractional
scaling effectively requires 4x the GPU power and it's only a Raspberry
Pi... I would suggest just not using fractional scaling in Xorg sessions
on low-power hardware.

You may find GNOME Shell in a Wayland session performs much better if
fractional scaling is a requirement.

Thanks for the bug report. It appears 'conky' is an X11 app but you are
using Wayland. Wayland sessions do not support the 'dock' X11 window
type. You will either need a version of conky that supports Wayland
natively, or a gnome-shell extension to replace it.

[Bug 1973397] Re: Ubuntu 22.04: Display manager resets when trying to change it using gear icon in login window

2022-05-23 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Please remove nomodeset from /etc/default/grub and then run:

  sudo update-grub

and reboot. "nomodeset" will prevent almost all graphics drivers from
working - you don't want that.

Please also ensure you have a valid driver installed for the "GeForce
930MX" by using the 'Additional Drivers' app to install the right one.

[Bug 1959747] Re: [upstream] Very high CPU and slow responsiveness in Thunderbird 91

2022-05-23 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I'm having similar problems again in 1:91.9.1+build1-0ubuntu0.20.04.1
with Thunderbird's CPU usage well over 100% and long periods of not
responding since the update.

But the fix for the original problem is still active:

  gfx.webrender.all = false
  gfx.webrender.force-disabled = true
