login screen is missing:

Every time i boot with kernel 5.3 I can see the services loaded (I
disable splash screen), the screen is black when requiring the user

[Bug 1848123] Re: After I turn on the machine in the morning (probably from S3 sleep), it just blinks the displays for a few moments, than it turns to black for seconds and this is an endless loop

It appears a number of people are reporting the same kernel error or
similar with docks in bug 1550779. And one other user also mentions "HP
840" but an older model.

The problems are close enough that I think the best next step is to
treat this as a duplicate of bug 1550779 until further progress is made
there in teasing out multiple issues as appropriate.

[Bug 1848119] Re: gnome-shell infinite crash loop when closing app in activities overview

2019-10-14 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

Please also log in to the text console there and record the kernel log:

Then attach the file 'blackscreendmesg.txt' to this bug.

We would like to see photos and logs from the 5.3 kernel trying to boot

[Bug 1847904] Re: intel grafic

2019-10-14 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Yes, probably. The different package names is a minor usability issue,
but also it's only an issue in a package people generally should not be
installing...

There's a common belief hat "installing the latest graphics driver" will fix
visible bugs, when actually:
 * in Linux that's practically never true; and
 * the xserver-xorg-video-intel* packages are not the latest but are old and
deprecated.

I think we owe it to the wider world to find ways to communicate this
better and break those common beliefs.

[Bug 1843899] Re: gnome-shell calendar widget is not centered on the screen

2019-10-14 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I feel we've settled on a poor design, but wasn't going to raise the
issue until xnox and popey did recently in these bug reports. If a few
of us still have concerns then it's a valid discussion. And at the same
time "Won't Fix" and "Opinion" are also understandable responses...

Caring about the product is important, and if multiple people still feel
it is below par then it is reasonable to discuss this still.

Please mention which version of Ubuntu/Gnome Shell you have the problem
with.

Everyone please also ensure you have tried uninstalling (not just
disabling) all non-Ubuntu extensions. Since so many bugs are caused by
extensions we need to exclude those as a first step.

My second preference would probably be something completely different:
Move the clock calendar to the right hand side.

My third preference would be the current behaviour of placing the
clock/calendar over the work area (maximized windows') centre.

which you probably do have.

So please describe what kind of problem you are trying to solve.

I personally agree with your perspective that this should not happen,
but it is the designed behaviour (ask didrocks, willcooke). The
intention was that the clock should be positioned to have the same
centre line as any maximized window's title.

P.S. The desktop icons seem to be moving in the wrong direction in your
screenshots. Please open a new bug if that's a concern.

[Bug 1847729] Re: Memory leak of gnome-shell after sleep mode

We find a large number of bugs are caused by shell extensions so please
start by uninstalling these ones you have installed:

'system_moni...@bghome.gmail.com'
'weatherinthecl...@jasonlg1979.github.io'
'move_cl...@rmy.pobox.com'
'alternate-...@gnome-shell-extensions.gcampax.github.com'

'system-moni...@paradoxxx.zero.gmail.com'
'workspace-indica...@gnome-shell-extensions.gcampax.github.com'
'user-th...@gnome-shell-extensions.gcampax.github.com']"

Be sure to uninstall them and don't just disable them. Then reboot and
retest to see if the bug persists.

2019-10-11 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Public bug reported:

Desktop icons vanishing and reappearing when in Activities Overview is
jarring and looks ugly.

Suggestions:

  * Don't hide them in AO, because they will be well shaded anyway; or

  * Fade them out and in smoothly.

[Bug 1847102] Re: Dragging icons around the dock only fully works once. After that they stick to the mouse pointer.

2019-10-11 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Still not entirely working but I feel it works more often now. Better on
my desktop with a mouse and worse on a laptop with a clickpad.

Something that seems to help (after hitting Escape) is to click on the
desktop. Then the next drag attempt is more likely to succeed. Though I
might be imagining things.

BTW, hitting Escape was not a workaround. It just allowed you to reclaim
the mouse, not complete a drag.

I *think* what we want from upstream is for module-switch-on-connect to
ignore new connections which are detected around the same time as the
daemon starting. Because those are not user-initiated but more likely
just a side-effect of logging in.

Please also report the bug upstream:

Even if it's unique to module-switch-on-connect, which only Ubuntu uses,
it still sounds like a simple fault in that module.

[Bug 1631161] Re: Preferred output device is not remembered between logins

Though if an HDMI-specific solution is found then we should go back to
using bug 1847570 and make it more clearly an HDMI-specific bug.

IMHO, an HDMI port should not be seen as new if it "appears" around the
same time as pulseaudio itself. That's just called logging in.

[Bug 1631161] Re: Preferred output device is not remembered between logins

2019-10-10 Thread Daniel van Vugt
More specifically I would guess your login is triggering one of:

load-module module-switch-on-port-available
load-module module-switch-on-connect

and switching to HDMI immediately on login. Try disabling one of those.

There are a number of modules that control automatic switching (which I
suspect may be getting in the way). See /etc/pulse/default.pa

[Bug 1847566] Re: Unlocking the screen is slower the older the session

2019-10-10 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I feel we would need more logs to be sure of any pattern here. To do
that, please repeat the problem and then for each slow unlock/login
record the most recent system log entries:

  journalctl -b0 > currentlog.txt

** Summary changed:

- Login is slower the older the session
+ Unlocking the screen is slower the older the session

** Description changed:

- Login takes several seconds after a session is a day old. Initially it is
fast.
+ Unlocking the screen takes several seconds after a session is a day old.
Initially it is fast.
Closing all programs and locking/login doesn't help.
  Logout/login DOES help.
It feels as if the time is related to the maximum RAM used.

Output of journalctl -b around the time of login:

Also without Valgrind the above command does not crash at all on armhf

the deb's custom build flags, which includes neon supporting the idea in

[Bug 1843733] Re: fftw3 ftbfs in eoan (armhf only)

2019-10-09 Thread Daniel van Vugt
When I build the native armhf tarball on armhf and then run the same
command I find many different bugs:

$ valgrind ./bench --verify ofr108*118
...
==27624== ERROR SUMMARY: 8257294 errors from 859 contexts (suppressed: 0 from 0)

This is why I was reluctant to use Valgrind. Because more often than not
a project will be full of errors other than the one you're looking for,
and Valgrind will report them all.

I'm not yet sure the error in comment #3 is the error we are looking for
in this bug. Although if it's the only error you get from a deb build
then it does seem more likely. It will take me another day or so to
confirm.
