Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command only once, as it
will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 1948577

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-

2021-10-24 Thread Daniel van Vugt
That is not related to this bug at all. Firstly it's the wrong program
(bt-adapter instead of bluetoothd). Secondly it doesn't mention any of
the functions this bug is about.

If you have a .crash file from Ubuntu for anything at all then please
use the 'ubuntu-bug' or 'apport-cli' to create a new bug report for it.

2021-10-20 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Verified fixed on focal with gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons
20.04.0-3~ubuntu20.04.4 using the test case at the top of this bug.

Although I expect the test case should not trigger the bug anymore at
all after gnome-shell 3.36.9, it's nice to have the root cause also
fixed in gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons.

[Bug 1947826] Re: External monitor stopped working after update

2021-10-20 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It appears you're just missing a driver for the Nvidia RTX 3060 Mobile
chip (which is what external monitor connectors are usually wired to).
Please open the 'Additional Drivers' app and install the latest Nvidia
driver.

[Bug 1947194] Re: When using Wayland in 21.04, the display often never wakes up after lock

2021-10-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks. Those crashes are from gnome-shell crashing in
libglib-2.0.so.0.6800.1+43647 but we don't have any useful debug symbols
in them :(

Please open the Extensions app and ensure you don't have any extensions
enabled other than the Ubuntu ones.

Please also upgrade to 21.10 when you can as we are more keen to find
out if such bugs exist there.

[Bug 1947706] Re: gnome crash after power save and display turn on

2021-10-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

2021-10-18 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Also, please edit /etc/environment and add a line:

  GDK_SYNCHRONIZE=1

That will slow the system slightly but will make the next crash occur in
a more *debuggable* way. It will create a new unique crash so please
tell us the link to that one too.

[Bug 1947194] Re: When using Wayland in 21.04, the display often never wakes up after lock

2021-10-18 Thread Daniel van Vugt
In the log of comment #6 it looks like you managed a soft reboot rather
than the hard reboot I was expecting. That's good news for you but made
understanding the log a bit more difficult. It appears the problem you
hit was a gnome-shell crash:

Oct 18 12:52:58 fluffy gnome-shell[4425]: The program 'gnome-shell' received an
X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the
program.
  The error was 'BadRROutput (invalid
Output parameter)'.
(Details: serial 1470 error_code
145 request_code 139 (RANDR) minor_code 30)
(Note to programmers: normally, X
errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the
error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with
the GDK_SYNCHRONIZE environment
 variable to change this behavior.
You can then get a meaningful
 backtrace from your debugger if
you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
Oct 18 12:52:58 fluffy kernel: traps: gnome-shell[4425] trap int3
ip:7f0e88877647 sp:7ffe8b7aa5a0 error:0 in
libglib-2.0.so.0.6800.1[7f0e88834000+8d000]

So once you manage to report your .crash files (using apport-cli),
please provide a link to what it created.

[Bug 1947545] Re: [nouveau] Ubuntu desktop screen and whole app screen started corrupting the display, I can't see the letters & display properly.

2021-10-18 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It appears this is a bug in the 'nouveau' driver. In most cases we would
recommend using the proprietary Nvidia driver instead, but for this
particular GPU that requires Nvidia driver version 304 which Ubuntu
doesn't ship anymore (usually because of limited support for particular
kernel versions by Nvidia).

The only suggestions I have are:

  * Use slow software graphics by adding a kernel boot parameter:
'nomodeset'; or

  * Use Ubuntu 16.04 on this machine
(https://releases.ubuntu.com/16.04/), where the nvidia-304 driver is
still supported; or

  * [EXPERT] Install an older kernel like v4.4 and then you should be
able to manually install
https://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx/123709/en-us or

  * Use Windows only.

I suggest the simplest solution for using Ubuntu on this machine is to
install https://releases.ubuntu.com/16.04/

[Bug 1947494] Re: Xorg crash

2021-10-17 Thread Daniel van Vugt

[Bug 1946987] Re: Nvidia 340 Xorg driver is installed but not loaded

The differences (in my experience) are mostly:

1. Personal config files in $HOME (filenames and directories usually
starting with a dot, so are hidden)

2. System config files (like those for Xorg or Nvidia) in /etc/X11 or
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d or other locations mentioned in the
documentation:

[Bug 1947185] Re: GNOME on Wayland does not initially display conky output

2021-10-17 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I should probably explain:

Weston is a Wayland compositor, but it appears Conky's error message is
about wanting an X11 compositor feature that it thinks is missing. In a
Wayland session, X11 composition is provided by 'Xwayland'. So this bug
is somewhere between Conky and Xwayland.

This is only a problem because Conky only supports X11. The discussion
about Conky supporting Wayland natively is in:

[Bug 1947185] Re: GNOME on Wayland does not initially display conky output

2021-10-17 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Weston is a compositor, and it is the reference compositor for Wayland.

The problem you describe in Weston sounds to me like Conky is using X11
and complaining about the Xwayland layer it is communicating through. So
this might be a bug in Xwayland or Conky. Either way it appears to
already have a discussion open in
