looking at `tail -f /var/log/syslog` I see almost the same message

Maintainer say "my guess is there’s something missing or misconfigured in your
session.". Now the problem is to find _what_ is missing or misconfigured (for
all subscriber here, I think)

[Bug 1965439] Re: software-properties-qt can no longer launch when called by kdesu

Sorry for my ignorance, but I'm afraid the source of the bug is deeper
(and not intrinsic to software-properties-qt), as the same bug also
occurs when trying to start, for example, KSystemLog.

I unpacked the deb file and indeed there's no calendar-today-
light.svg.dpkg-new file, the right name is calendar-today-light.svg

It looks like a bug.

[Bug 1951491] Re: Can't run snaps: .slice/session-1.scope is not a snap cgroup

2022-01-10 Thread Daniele Cruciani
headset? umh, well I found that I have no `systemd --user` running
(thank to Maciej Borzecki comment in #1956942), then I run it in a
terminal, and this fixed the problem.

I started session by `startx`, like enen above, I have no idea about gdm
session, but I can guess systemd --user is started there, in GDM, but
not by startx, and probably is a good idea not to run `systemd --user`
from startx, but user feedback is awful, I mean, by clicking on the
chromium launcher there is no feedback at all, running from terminal
there is this cgroup related message, when in debug there is some
reference to dbus, not systemd.

At the end everybody need Maciej Borzecki to explain where is the
problem, maybe snapd can return some less obscure message? Just an idea,
thank you for support anyway.

[Bug 1956942] [NEW] snap can not start chromium-browser with cgroup v2 and hierarchy

2022-01-10 Thread Daniele Cruciani
Public bug reported:

Message from the command line

> $ chromium-browser
> /sys/fs/cgroup/unified/user.slice/user-1000.slice/cgroup.procs

As a workaround I ran the script found in
https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/3388

```
#!/usr/bin/env bash
set -euo pipefail
file=/sys/fs/cgroup/user.slice/user-$(id -u).slice/cgroup.procs
sudo chown $(whoami):root $file
sudo chmod g+w$file
```

Now the error is:

> $ chromium-browser
> /user.slice/user-1000.slice/session-1.scope is not a snap cgroup

[Bug 1914859] [NEW] On upgrading 18.04 -> 20.04: package grub-pc 2.04-1ubuntu26.8 failed to install/upgrade: loop on configure dialog

2021-02-06 Thread Daniele Napolitano
Public bug reported:

I'm on a VM from LINUXVMIMAGES.COM.

On upgrading from Ubuntu 18.04 to 20.04 the installation of grub-pc
detectedt a different media giving me the option to delect another drive
where install grub. Even selecting a drive (correct one) the dialog ask
me to proceed without installing grub. This dialog looped through those
screens, in the end I used xkill to complete the upgrade.

In the end, with "dpkg configure -a" I was able to complete the
configuration of grub-pc through the the ncurses dialog.

So, seems broken the gui configure dialog.

[Bug 1909115] [NEW] ASUS Z9PE-D8 WS needs custom DSDT fix to properly shutdown (random)

2020-12-23 Thread Daniele
Public bug reported:

Running Ubuntu server 20.04.1 LTS (CLI only), after switching from other
distro (Manjaro and Artix) which present the same issue; basically I
tried the debian based, arch based and systemd free distro.

Issue description: issuing the command "shutdown -h now" or "poweroff -f"
doesn't shutdown the system properly, the system hangs is S5.
This doesn't happen all the time, but randomly, let's say in about 30% of cases.
This happens not only with an installed system but also with the bootable usb
installer.

How to replicate: I really don't know, it seems very random, without a
pattern.

Motherboard: ASUS Z9PE-D8 WS with bios v. 5802 (dated 2015/10/15)
CPU: 2x intel Xeon E5-2687w (SR0KG)

After trying different proposed solutions for the "hanging at shutdown"
issue (mostly by enabling/disabling things in grub and different kernels
down to 4.9) I found out that only a DSDT fix solves the issue, and in
particular in the _PTS method.

Basically this is the original part of the extracted DSDT:

Method (_PTS, 1, NotSerialized) // _PTS: Prepare To Sleep
{
If (((Arg0 == 0x04) && (OSFL () == 0x02)))
{
Sleep (0x0BB8)
}

PTS (Arg0)
DBG8 = Arg0
WAKP [Zero] = Zero
WAKP [One] = Zero
WSSB = ASSB /* \ASSB */
WOTB = AOTB /* \AOTB */
WAXB = AAXB /* \AAXB */
ASSB = Arg0
AOTB = OSFL ()
AAXB = Zero
\_SB.SLPS = One
}

The fix (or better call it workaround) includes a "do nothing" if Arg0 is 0x05
(state S5):

Method (_PTS, 1, NotSerialized)
{
   If (LEqual (Arg0, 0x05)) {}
   Else
   {
   Store (Arg0, DBG8)
   If (LAnd (LEqual (Arg0, 0x04), LEqual (OSFL (), 0x02)))
   {
   Sleep (0x0BB8)
   }

   PTS (Arg0)
   Store (Zero, Index (WAKP, Zero))
   Store (Zero, Index (WAKP, One))
   Store (ASSB, WSSB)
   Store (AOTB, WOTB)
   Store (AAXB, WAXB)
   Store (Arg0, ASSB)
   Store (OSFL (), AOTB)
   Store (Zero, AAXB)
   Store (One, \_SB.SLPS)
   }
}

I really don't know why without injecting the DSDT fix it hangs randomly at
shutdown.
I reported the issue to the kernel bugtracker too, but it seems there's not
much movement there :D

I hope this can be fixed kernel side:
For reference, this is the link to the kernel bugtracker:

[Bug 1906679] [NEW] bios grub-install crash with "no space left" but there's plenty of it

2020-12-03 Thread Daniele Dellafiore
Public bug reported:

I can do a succesfull install on this very same system and drive with Ubuntu
20.04.
Since Ubuntu 20.10, and now with daily live 21.04, I get this error.

I *think* I do have a BIOS setup, not a UEFI, on a drive with existing Windows
10 and a Ubuntu 20.04.
When the BIOS starts and I select where to boot from, I get 2 options from the
USB KEY: one is UEFI, the other is unspecified, which must be BIOS. I alwayse
chose "BIOS".

Nothing much else to report for now.

ProblemType: Bug

[Bug 1868501] Re: software-properties-gtk is blank when run as normal user.

2020-08-12 Thread Daniele
I had the same problem, after the upgrade from 18.04 to 20.04.1 it it opens
correctly.
Then I removed some useless repositories and when updating the list the
software hung and I had to force its closing.
After that it opens only with root permissions (sudo software-properties-gtk).

[Bug 1845797] Re: Microphone not detected Lenovo Yoga S940

2020-05-27 Thread Daniele Dellafiore
I reverted to 5.4.0-29-generic from 5.4.0-31-generic and now sound and
mic work ok.

Something in 5.4.0-31 which is the latest upgrade for Ubuntu 20.04,
breaks stuff.

I can confirm that with all kernel versions shipped with Ubuntu 20.04 up
to 5.4.0-29 but excluding 5.4.0-31, sound and mic work without problems
on Lenovo S940

[Bug 1845797] Re: Microphone not detected Lenovo Yoga S940

2020-05-26 Thread Daniele Dellafiore
I've recently upgraded to latest Lenovo Yoga S940, with Intel Core 7 10th gen.
With Focal Fossa, both audio and mic worked properly until a few days ago.

Now *sometimes* it loads with dummy audio and no mic at all.
Now it loaded with only audio and no mic.

It really seem random to me now.

There is this question that despite a different laptop, has a very similar
config:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1238563/no-sound-pulseaudio-ubuntu-20-04-but-sound-with-pulseaudio-uninstalled

In fact my outputs are:

[Bug 1855843] Re: vlan ip not assigned on boot but with `netplan apply`

Thank you for the reply.

As I wrote on the original post, the IPs are configured so the daemon
starts at boot time, but the IPs are wrongly assigned as I pointed out.

Since you asked, here's the wanted output:

... omitted data ...

Thank you and happy new year.

[Bug 1848921] Re: iwlwifi firmware crashes intel 9260ac [8086:2526] subsystem [8086:0010]

2019-12-28 Thread Daniele Conti
I can confirm just disabling the 11n setting does indeed work as a
workaround, tried on an XPS 15 9570 with that WiFi card.

[Bug 1855843] [NEW] vlan ip not assigned on boot but with `netplan apply`

2019-12-10 Thread Daniele
Public bug reported:

Hi everyone.

This is my first time with netplan so this could be related to my
inexperience, forgive me if is this the case.

This is the only yaml config file present:

```
$ cat /etc/netplan/10-casa.yaml
network:
  version: 2
  renderer: networkd
  ethernets:
ens3:
  addresses: ["192.168.1.2/24"]
  gateway4: 192.168.1.1
  nameservers:
addresses: ["1.1.1.1", "1.0.0.1"]
  vlans:
vlan2:
  id: 2
  link: ens3
  addresses: ["192.168.2.1/24"]
  routes:
  - to: 0.0.0.0/0
from: 192.168.2.0/24
via: 192.168.1.1
```

# ifupdown is not installed (I installed and then removed while
installing the server).

```
$ ls /etc/network/*
/etc/network/fan
/etc/network/if-down.d:
resolvconf  ubuntu-fan
/etc/network/if-post-down.d:
bridge  ubuntu-fan  vlan
/etc/network/if-pre-up.d:
bridge  ethtool  mtuipv6  vlan
/etc/network/if-up.d:
000resolvconf  ethtool  ip  mtuipv6  openssh-server  ubuntu-fan  vlan
# I also removed the 50_cloud_* file from here:
$ ls /etc/cloud/cloud.cfg.d
05_logging.cfg  90_dpkg.cfg  README  curtin-preserve-sources.cfg
```

Now the lettuce..

If I execute: `sudo netplan apply`, everything works as expected:

```
$ ip -4 addr
1: lo:  mtu 65536 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN group
default qlen 1000
inet 127.0.0.1/8 scope host lo
   valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
2: ens3:  mtu 1500 qdisc fq_codel state UP
group default qlen 1000
inet 192.168.1.2/24 brd 192.168.1.255 scope global ens3
   valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
4: vlan2@ens3:  mtu 1500 qdisc noqueue state
UP group default qlen 1000
inet 192.168.2.1/24 brd 192.168.2.255 scope global vlan2
   valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
```

The problem occurs after a reboot, where the vlan2 tries to obtain an IP
via DHCP and the vlan2 ip is assigned to the ens3 interface. The funny
part here, is that if I manually execute `netplan apply` at this point,
the right IP is assigned to the vlan2 interface, so in my case, I have
"solved" this issue, putting `netplan apply` in the `/etc/rc.local`
file...

```
ip -4 addr
1: lo:  mtu 65536 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN group
default qlen 1000
inet 127.0.0.1/8 scope host lo
   valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
2: ens3:  mtu 1500 qdisc fq_codel state UP
group default qlen 1000
inet 192.168.1.2/24 brd 192.168.1.255 scope global ens3
inet 192.168.2.1/24 brd 192.168.2.255 ...
   valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
4: vlan2@ens3:  mtu 1500 qdisc noqueue state
UP group default qlen 1000
inet 169.254.x.y/z ...
   valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
```

Am I missing something?
Thank you for the attention.

[Bug 1852383] [NEW] system hangs on shutdown

2019-11-12 Thread Daniele Dellafiore
Public bug reported:

On a Lenovo Yoga S940, the system always hangs on shutdown.
The screen turns black and nothing happens anymore.
I have to keep pressed for several seconds the shutdown hardware button in
order to actually turn it off.

I attach the journalctl output from the shutdown which present very
similar 'errors' from session to session.

[Bug 1846201] Re: Rendering is delayed on laptop display (works in external display)

2019-10-02 Thread Daniele Dellafiore
Ubuntu on Wayland has same behavior, but worst.

Video attached shows open a new tab with CTRL+T and the new tab not being
rendered until I create a new.
Then I remove both, I create a new one, not rendered, and got rendered only
when the mouse is moved.
https://photos.app.goo.gl/6Nc6oABXs1xX1ks26

This worked fine in 19.04 and works fine now with external display.

I'll send another video showing how windows animation for align right/left do
not work, windows just step from one state to the next with no animation.
Minimize/maximize are perfect.

I've made a picture as screenrecord/screenshot can't cath the problem.
As you can see the render is still on "General" despite "Extensions" being the
current selection.
You can see at the top part of the rendering is restarted and is now stuck in
the middle.

[Bug 1846201] Re: Rendering is delayed on laptop display (works in external display)

2019-10-01 Thread Daniele Dellafiore
Update.
Today I experienced this: after suspending the laptop, now I do not experience
broken rendering anymore.
This happened once before. Everytime I reboot, it comes back.

I'll try to identify a pattern here.

Also this is in the "Tweaks" application, gnome-shell does not have a
theme associated (see screenshot)

[Bug 1846201] Re: Rendering is delayed on laptop display (works in external display)

2019-10-01 Thread Daniele Dellafiore
Update.
Today I experienced this: after suspending the laptop, now I do not experience
broken rendering anymore.
This happened once before. Everytime I reboot, it comes back.

I'll try to identify a pattern here.

** Description changed:

- This is a very wierd behavior I get on the Lenovo Yoga S940 after
- upgrading to 19.10.
+ This is a very wierd behavior I get on the Lenovo Yoga S940 after upgrading
to 19.10.
+ This makes the laptop almost unusable with its own display.
+ This happens only on the laptop display, not on the external display.

- Basically the rendering on the laptop display is... messy, I'll try to
- describe how as

- * screenshots always take it ok
+ The render of portions of the screen does not happen after some events
(listed below) resulting in all or part of the screen not being re-rendered.
The UX is that nothing happened, but it has.
+ This happens after:
+
+ * key-stroke while typing sometimes
+ * alt-tab
+ * shift-right to align window to the right
+ * ctrl-pgup/down to switch tab in multi tabs apps.
+
+
+ Please note that:
+ * screenshots can't see the problem
  * also screenrecorder always seem ok, despite rendering being broken.

- What heppen is:
-
- When I alt-tab or switch tabs or align window right, the rendering does not
happen completely, so the screen displays part of the old status and part of
the new.
- If I then alt-tab again for example, or move the mouse cursor over the
portions that has not rendered properly, the renders happens.
-
- This happens only on the laptop display, not on the external display.
-
- This makes the laptop almost unusable with its own display.
-
- I will need to go back to 19.04, if there's something I can do to help
- debug this I'd rather do.

[Bug 1846200] [NEW] Rendering is delayed on laptop display (works in external display)

2019-10-01 Thread Daniele Dellafiore
Public bug reported:

This is a very wierd behavior I get on the Lenovo Yoga S940 after
upgrading to 19.10.

Basically the rendering on the laptop display is... messy, I'll try to
describe how as

* screenshots always take it ok
* also screenrecorder always seem ok, despite rendering being broken.

What heppen is:

When I alt-tab or switch tabs or align window right, the rendering does not
happen completely, so the screen displays part of the old status and part of
the new.
If I then alt-tab again for example, or move the mouse cursor over the portions
that has not rendered properly, the renders happens.

This happens only on the laptop display, not on the external display.

This makes the laptop almost unusable with its own display.

I will need to go back to 19.04, if there's something I can do to help
debug this I'd rather do.

[Bug 1845795] Re: authentication window got stuck over other windows

2019-09-30 Thread Daniele Dellafiore
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

  The "Authentication required" screen appeared while I was changing
  software repository settings, but it is stuck there:

  1. I can click "cancel" but there is no effect
  2. The window is now always on top of any other window, despite the original
Software Repository Settings windows has been closed (actually, terminated
manually)

  As you can see in the screenshot, The Firefox windows has focus now as I
  am typing in the address bar, but still the "dead" authentication window
  is on top.

  Using Ubuntu 19.10 on a Yoga Lenovo S940, upgraded from 19.04

[Bug 1845825] Re: i2c_designware and i2c_hid failures on shutdown

2019-09-30 Thread Daniele Dellafiore
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

  1. Using Ubuntu 19.10
  2. Shutdown system
  3. System get stuck at the windows with this messages:

  i2c_designware.o: controller timed out
  i2c_hid: failed to change power settings.

  It might not be related to the shutdown not happening, still that's the
  only clue I have.

  I attach the screenshot and dmesg output after the following boot.
