[Bug 1965811] Re: software-properties-qt does not load driver information

2022-03-21 Thread Darin Miller
Not an expert here, but the problem appears to be the import apt line 58
in SoftwarePropertiesQt.py.

apt.Cache() lacks the packages attribute.

Replacing apt with apt_pkg (as seen in the detect.py package and to
which the apt_cache is passed) should fix the problem.

apt is only called twice in SoftwarePropertiesQt.py and both times, it
is used (incorrectly) as follows:

self.apt_cache = apt.Cache()

If this is the correct approach to fix this issue, I will attempt to
submit a patch.

[Bug 1878080] [NEW] HPLIP fails to install working printer and scanner drivers.

2020-05-11 Thread Darin Miller
Public bug reported:

When using HPLIP to install drivers for HP ENVY 5530 e-All-in-One
Printer, the software correctly detects and tries to install the printer
driver. However, launching the printer window using printer icon in
the system tray shows a printer with a red x and a message that says
printer drivers install incomplete(?). Only a small subset of functions
are listed for the printer (thus consistent with the incomplete
message). Although HPLIP detects the correct printer, printing fails.

Also, when launching scanlite, user is prompted with 4 flavors for envy
5530 scanner connections, but only one of them works correctly.

None of these issues existed in 18.04.

I apologize for not responding sooner. This issues was fixed a few days

[Bug 1824670] [NEW] Boot to black screen after Kubuntu 19.04 install

2019-04-13 Thread Darin Miller
Public bug reported:

Legacy laptop, Dell Vostro 1720, booted to black screen after fresh full
disk install. Using ctrl-alt-f2 to drop to a terminal and issuing
"startx" completed the boot process.

Installed NVidia 340 driver which crashed the current session and sent
me to an endless GUI (sddm?) login loop where login immediately crashed
back to the GUI login.

Rebooting from the login screen worked as expected and system is running
fine now.

[Bug 1824669] [NEW] Live boot fails legacy boot Kubuntu 19.04

2019-04-13 Thread Darin Miller
Public bug reported:

Attempted to Live Boot 2 different legacy Dell laptops (Dell Vostro 1720
and Dell XPS M1530). Boot process hangs on the "Kubuntu 19.04 ."
screen.

Both laptops have NVidia cards, but unsure if NVidia cards have any
bearing on the boot.

Both laptops had Kubuntu 18.10 installed and have never had an issue
with live booting over the last 10 years.

[Bug 1822767] Re: Desktop is flickering/out of focus

2019-04-12 Thread Darin Miller
I confirm this issue. I see flickering/screen flashing after waking from
sleep on a GTX 1080 card, NVidia driver 418.56. Disabling compositiing
kills the flicker, but flicker returns upon compositing e-enable.

Plamsa and kwin restarts fail to rectify. Reboot is the only sure fix.

2019-04-07 Thread Darin Miller
uname -a: Linux Imagined 4.20.17-042017-generic
NVIDIA Driver Version: 418.56

Resumed 3 times from sleep with the 4.20 kernel, so far sound is working
fine.

Sometimes the issues does not appear until the next day (warm vs cold
hw?), so I will report back tomorrow.

If sound works for next few days, I will try editing /proc/modprobe.d
/alsa-base.conf and reboot into the 5.0 kernel.

[Bug 1822426] [NEW] 19.04 Built in Intel HDA sound is disabled upon resume

2019-03-30 Thread Darin Miller
Public bug reported:

With 19.04, Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset High
Definition Audio Controller intermittently is not enabled when resuming
from sleep. The HDMI sound device is enabled but that is not hooked up
on my system. New with 19.04, when sound works after resume, an icon
labeled "Built in Audio Stereo" appears during the resume process.

Unsure if this is related, but sound seems to sleep when not in use.
Launching sound enabled apps produces a quiet "tick, thud" sound as
sound system turns on.

When sound is not working, killall pusleaudio "fixes" the issue.

Once I enabled KDE connect permissions, KDE Connect worked fine for file
browsing, remote control, receiving and sending texts, and phone
notifications. Verified on Android 8 & 9 phones with Cosmic.

[Bug 1808657] Re: Ubiquity fails to boot when selecting the Try Kubuntu (live session).

2018-12-15 Thread Darin Miller
Another note, in the last 2 years, Ubiquity has never booted correctly
on this hardware so this problem is not something new. I never realized
the issue was ubiquity until today. (Neon live booted on this laptop
without requiring nomodeset and thus provided the ubiquity clue as Neon
does not use ubiqutiy).

[Bug 1808657] Re: Ubiquity fails to boot when selecting the Try Kubuntu (live session).

2018-12-15 Thread Darin Miller
Removing the maybe-ubiquity from the boot params, booted to live session
3 out 3 attempts.

Sometimes the ubiquity boot will fail before the Try/Install menu is
displayed as shown in the attachment. And it on this hybrid hardware,
Try Kubuntu option always fails (assuming the ubiquity reaches that
point).

** Attachment added: "Picture of ubiquity boot failure."

[Bug 1808657] [NEW] Ubiquity fails to boot when selecting the Try Kubuntu (live session).

2018-12-15 Thread Darin Miller
Public bug reported:

When booting to a live usb via UEFI boot on a hybrid Dell Inspiron 7559
laptop (Intel/Nvidia), the Try "Kubuntu option" hangs. If maybe-
ubiquity is removed from the boot parameters, the laptop will live boot
without issue. Proceeding directly to install works fine.

Another workaround is to add "nomodeset" to the boot parameters. But
nomodeset forces a VGA boot. VGA on a 4k screen provides a very poor
Live session experience.

I will reboot again with quiet mode disabled to see if any additional
errors are displayed.

[Bug 1762885] [NEW] SDDM fails to start on laptops modern NVidia cards

2018-04-10 Thread Darin Miller
Public bug reported:

Hybrid laptop with an NVidia 960M video card boots to a black SDDM
screen when the NVidia card enabled (using the NVidia 384 and 390.xx
drivers). Nouveau drivers fail to boot.

Switching to Intel drivers (sudo prime-select intel), SDDM loads/runs
just fine.

Removing the "quiet" option from grub boot shows Simple Display Manager
starting without error when NVidia is enabled. Unsure how to provide
additional useful information.

Ctrl-Alt-f1, logging in via the terminal, and startx enables normal
desktop use.

[Bug 1716092] [NEW] Enabling Auto switching streams on new active output cashes pulseaudio to crash

2017-09-08 Thread Darin Miller
Public bug reported:

Not sure if this is a plasma-pa bug or a pulseaudio bug. In plasma-pa
-> Audio Volumue -> Advanced tab checking the "Automatically switch
all running streams when a new output becomes available" cause PA to
crash. If the /etc/pulse/default.pa file is modified by commenting out
following line:

  load-module module-switch-on-connect

PA will start as expected. I have not checked to see if the auto
switching works when the default.pa line is commented out.

[Bug 1714140] [NEW] Fresh OEM install, xorg failed to start after user setup was performed.

2017-08-30 Thread Darin Miller
Public bug reported:

While testing OEM install, the live boot, vendor update boot, and boot
to end user setup worked fine. After entering credentials and
performing final user setup, the subsequent reboot resulted in a
terminal login prompt. After logging in at the prompt, startx was
required to continue the boot process.

All subsequent reboots have been fine.

[Bug 1638473] Re: Blank screen after running oem-config

2017-02-16 Thread Darin Miller
I could not repeat the black screen issue with either Ubuntu 16.04.2
amd64 nor the i686 OEM install.

HW: ASUS mb with UEFI BIOS, Intel VT-x enabled, Intel CPU with NVidia
graphics card (driver v. 378.13).

Install worked as expected (both in VM and on real hw).

[Bug 1665385] [NEW] dragonplayer fails to play video

2017-02-16 Thread Darin Miller
Public bug reported:

Attempting to play mp3/mp4 video with default Nouveau drivers fails to
render any video. The player resizes to the aspect ratio of the video
and audio is played, but no video. No change in behavior after
installing kubuntu-restricted-extras.

Installing proprietary NVidia drivers "fixes" the issue.
