Thanks for the quick reply!
The first option (altering /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf) just removed
all my sound.
The second option is a slight improvement - now my laptop speakers work,
and when I plug my earphones into the output the laptop speakers are
muted, and alsamixer seems to be giving

When using the new ubiquity installer, I can't choose where to install
grub. In my particular case I need to install it to the beginning of a
partition, but I can't seem to see any way of choosing a drive to
install grub to either.
