[Bug 1311407] Re: After installation, an Apache instance with `ssl` mod enabled will cause a 'fail to start' error.

2014-09-19 Thread Dawning
Yup, this is giving me a headache too. I think the central issue is that
I also have modssl enabled and in /etc/apache2/ports.conf with ssl
enabled, it then opens 443 for listening, so then if gnutls is also
enabled, I tries to open 443 a second time. I've commented one of my
Listen 443 directives and I *think* I'm okay now.

Yeh.. I just blew a fat wad of time due to this very issue. Gotta

[Bug 354995] Re: Brasero Checksum Error

2011-05-17 Thread Dawning
I'm having this problem as well - though judging by the time stamps, I'm
a bit unsure if this could be a regression or a PEBKAC. I've tried quite
a few things to no successful ends as yet. I tried removing wodim and
just leaving growisofs - that seemed to have no impact.

Many pandas are crying right now.

[Bug 270997] Re: intrepid regression: rdesktop overrides window manger key binding even when -K is used

2011-04-19 Thread Dawning
I find it awesome that this issue has remained right up to this
moment.. And probably will continue.. Perhaps I need to learn about
package maintenance in Ubuntu, patch the current package and maintain
the fixed one? I don't really know if I need to have a strong Ubuntu
contrib rep for that or what...?

Any tips?

When using the Take Screenshot application in 11.04 Beta (as of April

When I click (what I believe is) the pop-out button in the lower-right

can tell where the two different monitors physically separate by where

[Bug 668874] Re: VPN connection to Cisco not working

2011-02-17 Thread Dawning
I'm trying to get mine working for the first time so I'm a bit unsure of
whether I'm doing something incorrect or not. I'm pretty sure my VPN
connection info is all correct as I was quite careful with it. I've
tried various variants on that information anyway, but there's little
ambiguity and that's making me think there's a bug. First off, when I
try to connect I get no connection of course, but I also get no feedback
from the GUI, which I think ought to be something added (I imagine it's
a documented feature request).

Here's what I get in my /var/log/syslog:

[Bug 571444] Re: Boot hangs and unable to continue when automount disk in fstab is not available (Off or Disconnected)

2010-11-09 Thread Dawning
Interesting history of discussion on this topic. I also stumbled on a
small thread regarding users confused about what to do for this here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=10094269#post10094269

I'm a fairly big fan of having a timeout for bootwait. Alternatively,
perhaps we need another option in addition to bootwait and nobootwait...
bootwaitdelay or something like that. I'd then suggest that at install
time, there be an advanced options area people can view to change some
defaults for things like this.

I support another simple 'solution' could be to add a comment to the
default /etc/fstab file that informs people of 'nobootwait' as I think
for most Ubuntu users, that'd be enough. Granted the more casual users
would still be stuck enjoying the annoying nature of their experience.

Those are my two cents anyway. Gerald's comments look quite nice too.

[Bug 637880] [NEW] ATI Radeon 5770 Very Poorly Supported

2010-09-14 Thread Dawning
Public bug reported:

I've tried to run an ATI Radeon 5770 based video card on my x64 10.04
box (up to date as of Sept 14). I've even tried using the 10.8 Catalyst
(was released a few weeks back.. ~late Aug 2010). Thus far the very best
performance I can get is what I'd get using the vesa X11 driver (only I
was explicitly using fglrx).

I gave the x64 10.10 beta a whirl, but didn't even get anything coming
up on my display. I'm aware I could probably feed in some command-line
option on boot and set up on ghetto-graphics. I didn't bother with that.

I've also tried running this card in parallel with a Radeon HD 2600.
When doing that, the ATI Catalyist Center reports the 5770 as an
Unknown Device... sarcasm Awesome /sarcasm

I'm concerned in that the 5770 is growing in popularity (for example
it's now common place in a few lines of Apple machines). I've observed
some forums threads with some fairly old discussion on this issue.

Perhaps a 'solution' could entail outright declaring that it's an
unsupported card until further notice. If that's opted for, there should
be a hook or something in grub2 that displays a warning message to
users... As that's a lot more graceful than a completely blank screen.

I can only hope my take on this whole situation is incorrect, but sadly,
I've spent many hours on this. I think the 5770 stands to make 10.10 not
look so great. Hopefully it's an isolated case?

Thanks gang, keep up the awesome work!

[Bug 490742] Re: MacBook Pro: very slow resume from S3 suspend-to-ram

2010-09-14 Thread Dawning
Yeah, I find that the resume time varies. Some times I find myself
toying with the screen brightness keys in order to get my backlight
going again from a suspend.

I'd still say my resume times average about 10s though. It feels kinda
long compared to OSX, but I think it's tolerable. But, if someone hates
it enough, they can always figure out a great fix. I'm sure many people
out there would give props for that.

[Bug 201711] Re: Apple fn key behavior isn't consistent with what's expected

2010-09-14 Thread Dawning
I've run Ubuntu on my Apple machines for several years now and I've
found the current approach (requiring the pressing of the fn key) to be
very intuitive. I do have a friend however who bought an Apple keyboard
for his Whitebox PC and he never thought to even try holding 'fn'. But
you can't win 'em all.

Perhaps there's enough quirks to Apple hardware to justify a little GUI
config app for selecting enablers for various little things such as
disabling the default functionality in this case.

I like it as it is, that's my vote anyway.

[Bug 563874] Re: Change Desktop Background Dialog can be very slow to launch

apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

  Binary package hint: gnome

I've found on one of my two x64 Beta 2 10.04 setups, that the Change
Desktop Background dialog is VERY slow to open.. An error message
Unable to start the Settings Manager 'gnome-settings-daemon'...
  appears (screenshot here:
  http://www.flickr.com/photos/dawning/4522829430/).

Eventually the expected dialog/window does appear and operates normally.

A video of this behavior can be viewed here:
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwbvRMPgrfU

Note that on one of my machines I observe this problem, but not on the
other. The only thing I can think of being significantly different is
the problem machine has a few mount points declared in fstab that are
sshfs shares - so some times things can go a little weird if I had a
file open on an sshfs mount and then suspend/resume my machine. However,

[Bug 563578] Re: Boot Splash Hindering Boot on Macbook / Mac Pro

2010-04-26 Thread Dawning
Update: As it now stands, I'm not observing any start up boot splash on
my Macbook. However I am seeing it during shutdown. And the machine
seems to be booting up/down just fine.

My machine is fully updated 10.04 x64 as of the date of posting this
message.

[Bug 275604] Re: Hard disk graph in panel applet constantly reads 0%

2010-04-26 Thread Dawning
Yeah, you know, I'm gonna have to say nevermind about my previous
comments of it looking fine. I definitely see disk io, but it's totally
totally not reflective of the actual system io.. Looks like some work is
needed here. I'd also love it if there was a means of illustrating
different disks io too, but you know, we can worry about that desire
later :)

2010-04-26 Thread Dawning
I just installed some updates - and now I do see the splash on boot..
But before it comes up I see a little bit of console boot up noise (not
that I care, just thought the point of Plymouth was to make things
really pretty and uniform). Anyway, boot seems a little bit lengthy
right now too, but I don't have substantial info and it's tolerable.

Well, it's been over a year since I last commented on this. At this

[Bug 490742] Re: MacBook Pro: very slow resume from S3 suspend-to-ram

2010-04-21 Thread Dawning
Presently on Ubuntu 10.04 x64 Beta 2 (fully updated as of April 20th

While OSX remains a fair bit faster, I consider this to be fast enough.

Are others still having an issue with this?

Though judging by the HDD LED on my box, as much as it's got some

WAY less than what I think the actual activity level is. It's possible
that the applet is only reporting activity of my system drive or

[Bug 567365] [NEW] Eject key on Mac Pro not working

2010-04-20 Thread Dawning
Public bug reported:

I've found that on my Mac Pro running Ubuntu 10.04 x64 Beta 2
(completely updated as of April 20th 2010), the eject key on the
keyboard doesn't eject the CD tray. However, on my Macbook, with the
exact same software setup, the key does work.

In both cases the eject image appears in the upper-right corner of the
screen momentarily. Just that a CD will eject on the laptop machine and
does't with the desktop.

[Bug 563874] Re: Change Desktop Background Dialog can be very slow to launch

2010-04-20 Thread Dawning
I'm presently not having this problem anymore..

Still, it *may* have somehow been partly due to having some laggy mounts
(via sshfs). Though I'm also not convinced that should matter is the
background images are stored on a local partition. But this lag felt as
though something was scanning around my mounts and getting tripped up by
the laggy ones...

[Bug 563578] [NEW] Boot Splash Hindering Boot on Macbook / Mac Pro

2010-04-15 Thread Dawning
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub

I've had extreme difficulty in getting the 10.04 Beta 2 x64 disk image
to boot my Macbook (4,1) past the initial grub menu.

I've found if I remove the last few grub entries and replace them with
nosplash that it seems to start up okay. I've also had similar
challenges with my Mac Pro (x64 too).

I've also found that if I boot from the disk and not press a key, the
boot process freezes with the grub menu up. IF, I however, press some
keys shortly after the menu appears, I can interact with it as expected
until I select a boot option. I've tried options like disabling acpi
with no change in symptoms.

[Bug 563874] [NEW] Change Desktop Background Dialog can be very slow to launch

2010-04-15 Thread Dawning
Public bug reported:

However,
I observe this error on the problem machine with nothing mounted other
than root. But the sshfs shares may still be relevant due to stale
handles or something (I'm not sure how to look for those).

Thanks good luck!

[Bug 490742] Re: MacBook Pro: very slow resume from S3 suspend-to-ram

2010-01-20 Thread Dawning
Indeed, I have had this same issue too for quite some time on Macbook
4,1.

I find sometimes, I'll tell the machine to resume and it'll take up to
20seconds before the screen backlight even comes on. Then, I often start
entering my password to unlock and the machine suspends again. I have to
press the power button then to resume, finish entering my password and
I'm back - the whole process taking in the neighborhood of 40 - 60
seconds.

[Bug 313385] Re: losetup 32bit offset limit, hangs on retry, remains defunct

2009-03-23 Thread Dawning
So, I think the issue I've been having *may* be related.

I store a bunch of junk on an LVM and I needed to expand that a bit. So
I created a virtual disk using dd and losetup to expand my LVM.

Everything seems fine, but after some case that I'm having a hard time
identifying, I cease to be able to view certain parts of the file system
on my LVM and my dmesg and /var/log/messages get flooded with stuff like

[code]
CIFS VFS: Unexpected lookup error -112

and

[Bug 313385] Re: losetup 32bit offset limit, hangs on retry, remains defunct

2009-03-23 Thread Dawning
There are other keywords, like one of those backtraces comes out of an
instance of rm.

My LVM was full and I had another drive that was already doing something
else. I used dd to make a file that I'm using an extra storage space on
the LVM.

losetup is what connects that file to the file system as a block device
that the LVM can make use of.

I think the error messages I've seen thus far (as provided above) are
merely symptoms of this problem. But I can't honestly say I'm sure what
is going on.

Samba is involved at all in that there's a samba share over part of the
LVM.

[Bug 340834] [NEW] Power Manager misnames External power source as AC power

2009-03-10 Thread Dawning
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

=== The Issue ===
The Power Manager applet in Gnome says my computer is on AC power when it's
plugged in. All computers run on DC power, just that most desktops convert the
power they're fed to DC inside of their power supplies. Saying the computer is
on AC power to me seems like an annoying misnomer. Laptops will essentially
always have a power cord that includes an AC to DC adapter in the middle of the
cord - so the laptop is fed DC and has no awareness of anything to do with AC
power.

=== My Suggestion ===
I'd just use the terms External and Internal power - this is somewhat
ambiguizing, however it's about as accurate as you can generally get for this
sort of thing.

* Yes, I know I'm being picky, but hey, it's not like being accurate in our
choice of terms here costs us money. Besides, it's not crippling, go ahead and
ignore me if you guys like - only thing is, I think it kind of hurts Ubuntu
slightly to have a misnomer like that, or at least, it would in the eyes of
certain weird people.

2009-02-11 Thread dawning
Sorry for all the posts, the AMD64 package is here:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/jaunty/amd64/sshfs/2.1-1

I have installed this package on my machine and am not observing this
issue any longer.

Will these packages be added to the 8.10 repos? I have a few friends
that run Ubuntu desktops that I was going to setup some shares for them
using sshfs. It'd be kind of annoying to have to go explicitly download
this package for both of them when it seems like there's already a
perfectly healthy package available for 8.10 users to grab via the
regular update channels. Or is it just not that simple?

Thanks gang!!! :)

[Bug 188811] Re: Unmount of sshfs fails

2009-02-11 Thread dawning
My Intreprid (amd64) that's fully up to date is also having these
..disagrees with the fstab issues. I have been dealing with it by
unmounting with sudo umount -f mount dir - but I don't like that
fix as I mount the shares as a user and of course that's not
addressing whatever the problem really is.

I've also noticed on a box that I'm sshfs connecting to a new problem
involing (I think) a kernel module crashing. My /var/log/messages has
core dumps from several processes that periodically die. That issue is
causing my UI to freeze for minutes at a time - I'm not convinced that
it is related to this issue.

Okay, well I looked a bit further in to it - And there's already a lot
of noise about this plus a patch that patches the patch that introduced
the regression. ktp420 has a post pretty early on that links to where
that's discussed.

I don't understand why this patch isn't rolled in to the package? Does
it reflect some kind of disconnect between fixing bugs in Ubuntu itself
and individual projects that are not distro specific or something? I'm
pretty new to how bugs are handled with Open Source, so I'm really just
genuinely interested how it goes.

[Bug 258052] [NEW] Motion JPEGs flicker/flash

2008-08-14 Thread dawning
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

=== Issue ===
I use motion JPEG images/videos with an application called motion. When I
view the motion jpegs it produces most of the time in FF3 they show that it's
really just reloading the same source image over and over to produce a video.

=== What I expect ===
Firefox should wait for the image to be fully downloaded before drawing it for
motion jpeg clips so that the user doesn't get a crazy flickering effect.

=== Reproduction ===
I'd rather not share this URL, but here's my camera that I'm referring to:
http://orion.dawning.ca:8081/

=== Platform ===
I've observed this issue with Firefox 3.0.1 on Linux and Windows.

[Bug 228619] Re: samba group share not writable by group members

2008-07-09 Thread dawning
I'm having this same issue. I've tried tons of variants using

create mask
security mask
directory mask
force [the above]

I've tried placing them only in my [global] sections, in each of my
shares and in both.

Regardless, I get the same result. I can get create mask to create files
with fewer perms, but the best I can get is 7 for user, 5 for group and
read for everyone. I'm trying to set up a samba server for use with my
team at work, but I need the group perms working for it to be worth
switching off of our Windows server for this. Please help!

[Bug 228619] Re: samba group share not writable by group members

2008-07-09 Thread dawning
Ahaw! Sufficient digging has returned THE solution.

THE solution entails knowing what the hell you're trying to do (RTFM
FTW).

try this: man smb.conf

I just threw the following in my smb.conf to get totally uselessly open
perms on files created by users:

[global]
stuff

[share1]
other stuff no one cares about
   force create mode = 777
   force directory mode = 777
force directory security mode = 777

Key info from the smb.conf man page:

create mode
This parameter is a synonym for create mask.

   create mask (S)
When a file is created, the necessary permissions are calculated
according to the
mapping from DOS modes to UNIX permissions, and the resulting UNIX
mode is then bit-
wise ’AND’ed with this parameter. This parameter may be thought of as
a bit-wise MASK
for the UNIX modes of a file. Any bit not set here will be removed
from the modes set
on a file when it is created.

The default value of this parameter removes the group and other
write and execute
  bits from the UNIX modes.

Following this Samba will bit-wise ’OR’ the UNIX mode created
from this parameter
with the value of the force create mode parameter which is set to 000
by default.

This parameter does not affect directory masks. See the parameter
directory mask for
  details.

Note that this parameter does not apply to permissions set by
Windows NT/2000 ACL
editors. If the administrator wishes to enforce a mask on access
control lists also,
they need to set the security mask.

  Default: create mask = 0744

  Example: create mask = 0775

..

   directory mode
This parameter is a synonym for directory mask.

   directory mask (S)
This parameter is the octal modes which are used when converting
DOS modes to UNIX
  modes when creating UNIX directories.

When a directory is created, the necessary permissions are
calculated according to
the mapping from DOS modes to UNIX permissions, and the resulting
UNIX mode is then
bit-wise ’AND’ed with this parameter. This parameter may be thought
of as a bit-wise
MASK for the UNIX modes of a directory. Any bit not set here will be
removed from the
modes set on a directory when it is created.

The default value of this parameter removes the ’group’ and ’other’
write bits from
the UNIX mode, allowing only the user who owns the directory to
modify it.

Following this Samba will bit-wise ’OR’ the UNIX mode created
from this parameter
with the value of the force directory mode parameter. This parameter
is set to 000 by
default (i.e. no extra mode bits are added).

Note that this parameter does not apply to permissions set by
Windows NT/2000 ACL
editors. If the administrator wishes to enforce a mask on access
control lists also,
they need to set the directory security mask.

  Default: directory mask = 0755

  Example: directory mask = 0775

Re: [Bug 216518] Re: kernel module segmentation fault

2008-06-15 Thread dawning
It was a corrupted reiserfs problem. I have a different file system I'm
dumping that stuff to in that way and don't get a problem now.

I could keep using the resiser partition, it was fine after I ran a bunch of
fsck stuff and fixed up the issues. Not sure how it got corrupted.

[Bug 216518] [NEW] kernel module segmentation fault

2008-04-12 Thread dawning
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ivtv-utils

Description:Ubuntu 7.10
Release:7.10

I was capturing data from my PVR-150 video capture card. I have used it to
capture by running:
cat /dev/video0 outputfile.mpeg for a long time as the card's onboard MPEG2
encoder is great.

The following has been occuring lately..

[Bug 216518] Re: kernel module segmentation fault

2008-04-12 Thread dawning
I've found that this problem doesn't reoccur when playing back video
using mplayer, I've managed to get mplayer to preform slowly enough that
the same ivtv message about full stream buffers occurs. However, I
haven't re-observed the apparent segmentation fault.
