I just installed an newer ubuntu mainline kernel (4.13.9) and the issue is fixed as described by Kai-Heng Feng. The new problem with that now is that closing the laptop lid doesn't do anything, even though I have set the AC and battery action to 'suspend' in dconf-editor. I do hope that this is
