Same problem with Ubuntu 11.04 (Unity).
Resolution 1024x768 is fine but higher resolutions result in surrounding black
space (top and right). The top menu bar, however, seems to be rendered
correctly. No problem under KDE.

I had a similar experience by using the ATI drivers (fglrx).
I spent much time on trying to fix it and I finally found an ugly workaround.
$ aticonfig --query-monitor
Connected monitors: crt1, lvds,
Enabled monitors: lvds

I forgot to update that topic... my workaround didn't work as I expected. After
another reboot, the issue was back :-(
Currently, I can't use the normal KDE shutdown buttons (Logout, Shutdown,
Reboot). I switch to the console and manually execute reboot or halt.

Just after the workspace is started, I immediately stopped the building
workspace... background action.
Eclipse didn't crash then. I disabled build automatically and switch to PHP
perspective (PHPEclipse).

Perfectly worked until I tried to open a file that was modified outside
Eclipse. IDE crashed.
Since then... Eclipse crashes 1-2 seconds after the workspace is started.
