[Bug 1055030] Re: 12.10 should be released with gWaei 3.6.x

2013-01-03 Thread Zachary Dovel
gWaei 3.6.2 is out. The localized menus are back and a few other things
have been polished up. It would be nice if this could be used in 12.4
and 12.10 instead of the version that isn't running at all. :-/

[Bug 1055030] [NEW] 12.10 should be released with gWaei 3.6.x

2012-09-23 Thread Zachary Dovel
Public bug reported:

3.6.x is specially made to work with Unity and its global menu. 3.6.1
should be coming though the pipeline on the Debian repositories soon.
3.6.1 will also fix the broken gWaei on 12.04 LTE. The current version
of gWaei in Ubuntu is broken and I would rather not keep getting bug
reports upstream or keep seeing "how to make gwaei work on Ubuntu" web
pages on google.

[Bug 971240] Re: Won't load in 12.04 (beta 2)

2012-09-22 Thread Zachary Dovel
The source code for gWaei 3.6.1 has been released.

>From what I can tell, the ipadic issues were caused by the gtk global
menu code being buggy (doing a double free). ipadic being available
just happened to mitigate the situation by pure chance.

So in any case, I wrote some wrapper code around the gmenu system which
avoid the menu bug, allows me to change the unity menu bar when you open
the vocabulary list with now crashes, and allows dynamic accelerator
setting such that the dictionary selection shortcuts work again.

I have tested the program with both Ubuntu 12.04 and Ubuntu 12.10. On
Ubuntu 12.04, you will not see check or radio icons in the unity global
menubar because the code doesn't support 100% gtk's dbus menu export
protocal. On Ubuntu 12.10 it is fine and everything works as expected.

2012-09-22 Thread Zachary Dovel
Bah 3.6.1 is released. I'm pretty sure the ipadic problem was actually
caused by Ubuntu's and gtk's buggy menu code. I reworked my code around
it and I am not seeing that problem anymore. In any case, it should be
good enough for the Ubuntu people.

Norbert,

I have most of the issues fixed now on the git repo. Just trying to
reproduce the mecab issue again. For some reason I can't now. Expect a

This seems to be an ubuntu issue (I was able to reproduce) which I am
going to try to fix in the C code. It is unrelated to the deb
configuration though you could make it not crash by forcing the
dictionary as a requre. Norbert, you probably don't see the issue like I
don't see the issue on my Arch Linux install.

The vocabulary window uses a different menubar than the search window.
When it switches, the experimental versions of gtk+-3.5 crash with
gWaei. I got the gtk guys to do patch last night because they like me.
:) This means that gwaei won't crash like heck on Ubuntu 12.10
(releasing next month.)

I got the dictionary shortcuts working last night with
gtk_application_add_accelerator(). The function was only just recently
documented on
though it exists in 3.4 too.

I am seeing 3 issues still.

Crashes when running with no ipadic installed
Changing the menubar causes a crash (which happens when you open the vocabulary
window)
Dictionary shortcuts not working (alt/ctrl-1 etc)

The last 2 are caused by all these new menu systems everybody is using
and they are not very stable yet. (Things crash in the api that should
not.)

Thank you, Janne. :)

Just did the gWaei 3.6 release. It took a bit more testing than I had
wanted. Hopefully it will have packages in the next few days. This
version should be more functional with Ubuntu and I have done some
direct testing.

Between how the gtk guys have redone menus and Ubuntu grabbing menus
their own way it has been a mess I have been afraid to touch too much.

The gWaei website usually is at , but I
am migrating it to my personal site at
so it is easier to manage.

Ubuntu guys, if you want me to keep gWaei working on Ubuntu, I need more
communication on what I can do to get fixes in or when you guys will
take bug fix releases from the debian package tree.

2012-09-16 Thread Zachary Dovel
I'm releasing gWaei 3.6 today in order to try to preempt the next Ubuntu
release. It doesn't require the upped zlib version like 3.4. I would
backport some of these changes, but none of the Ubuntu maintainers have
made very good contact. I do bug fix releases for problems like this
but they never seem to include the fixed package in their repositories.

Thank you guys for the work. For Yvon's patch, I would recommend
someone update the searchwindow.ui glade file with glade and change the
Packing->Pack type to End for everything but the menubar so that when
the menubar is readed, it will be on the top when people are not using
Unity on Ubuntu.

The next version of gWaei will be using a new menu system so it should
interact with Ubuntu/Unity better.

[Bug 971240] Re: Won't load in 12.04 (beta 2)

2012-04-23 Thread Zachary Dovel
You should switch

g_assert(menu != NULL);

to

if (menu != NULL) { }

where the {} surround the menu add/remove statements because not all
windows will have a menu. g_assert is used to detect programming
mistakes so it is inappropriate here.

In the vocabularywindow.ui in version 3.2.x, "menubar1" should be
changed to "menubar". So you would best patch that file too.

While this is a good temporary fix, I can't add this code to upstream
because it is a bit hackish. I'm going to look for a better way in
3.4.x or 3.5.x.

2010-05-03 Thread Zachary Dovel
Hi, I'm the upstream programmer of gWaei.

This was fixed in gWaei 1.3 when I was informed of it on Fedora (which
runs the same version of gtk). Getting and setting the gtk_buildable
names using gtk_widget_set_name was depricated in gtk which is causing
the problem.

I haven't been able to get in contact with the package container on this
yet. gWaei 1.4 should be released this week. Both of those newer
versions do not have this problem.

[Bug 481056] Re: Dell Vostro 1000 laptop goes into hibernation whenever I plug in the power cord as if battery is dead

2010-01-11 Thread Dovel
I have the same issue on a Dell Inspiron 1501. Running Krappy-Koala.
Battery does not have to be near empty and it doesn't happen every time.
This machine fails to resume from hibernation ever since upgrade to
Krappy-Koala.

[Bug 446146] Re: Several Huawei USB dongle don't work with kernel 2.6.31-12.40 (2.6.31.1 update related)

2009-11-22 Thread Dovel
In regards to comment #291. I actually have found the e169 to work.
Yesterday after I upgraded to 2.6.31-15. I was so shocked as I had
tested it after the upgrade and a couple of boots. My friend just
plugged it in and it worked. It got a bad connection and I reconnected
it. It worked. Then strangely something else that has not worked also
worked. The laptop battery ran flat and it went into hibernation - and I
was able to wake it up again successfully. It hasn't done that since I
upgraded to Karmic. It won't do it though unless I've used the e169
during that session. If I haven't used the e169, it won't wake up from
hibernation.

Possibly a bit of useless info, but strange correlation. I'm running a
Dell Inspiron 1501.

[Bug 475985] Re: Rhythmbox unable to play mp3 files in the music library

2009-11-08 Thread Dovel
I found this bug appeared after an upgrade to Karmic from Jaunty. The
autoaudiosink plugin should be in gstreamer-plugins-good, which is
installed and I also tried re-installing it to no avail. None of the
other players work either and gnome-volume-control can't start up - says
it can't find the sound device. The card ( VIA ac97) shows when I use
lspci | grep sound and aplay -l shows the device as working.

Alsamixer would not load until I changed permissions of /dev/snd/* to
777.

All in all, it seems to be a more deepset issue than just rhythmbox.

2009-03-29 Thread Dovel
I am sure that, like many users who are used to logging out from the
System menu (which is a pretty standard way to do things across many
desktop environments!) I find using the applet quite annoying. Why can't
there be more than one way to do things? When we start restricting the
ways in which users can use their desktop, it's a slippery slop to the
end. Bring it back. I've been logging out via a menu or text for about
18yrs now. Not going to change to an applet I don't even want on my
panel. It has no use for me.

[Bug 335960] [NEW] [needs-packaging] gWaei needs-packaging

2009-02-28 Thread Zachary Dovel
Public bug reported:

gWaei is a GPL licensed Japanese-English dictionary program for GNOME.
It's similar to Gjiten, but has a more modern feeling. Lately it has
been getting a bit popular and is included in the repos of a number of
source based distributions (gentoo, arch, netbsd, etc). While the
program has some ubuntu deb packages available from their site, they
have some basic problems.

It would be nice to get the upstream packages at least installing
correctly in Ubuntu even if it never makes it in the Ubuntu
repositories. The build script for the source can auto build deb files
with the commands:

./configure
make ubuntu-deb

( By the way, I'm actually the maintainer ;-) )

[Bug 291073] Re: Firefox 3.03 freezes when the Print dialog is accessed.

2009-01-21 Thread Dovel
Problem can be fixed by manually deleting all references to system
printers in about:config. This is a very tiresome task.

Is it really necessary for FF to store such detailed printer info? Isn't
that what CUPS is there for?

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: firefox

Using Firefox 3.03 on Intrepid. I normally use the print function in
Firefox to print receipts etc to pdf. When I select print now though I
get an empty dialog window popping up which I cannot close. Firefox
fully freezes and I have to force quit. Doesn't seem to matter if I
select the Print option from the File menu or use the print button on
the toolbar. Print works fine in other applications.
+
+ Update: the problem can be fixed by manually deleting all references to
+ system printers in about:config. This seems to suggest that the problem
+ is caused by a FF auto config bug of some sort.

[Bug 274995] Re: MASTER storing ALSA mixer element values during shutdown hangs nondeterministically if non-loopback network interfaces are still up

2008-11-25 Thread Dovel
Daniel Chen

As much as I do not want to be drawn into a useless debate, the driver
would seem to be successful if it does as intended with the hardware -
BIOS included - provided by the vendor. The question of which of the two
- the hardware's BIOS or the driver designed to work with it has the bug
would seem to be more a subjective question than an objective one and as
such is not fundamentally important. Please remember, whatever you think
of our "armchair analysis". We, like you, are members of the Ubuntu
community. We report and help fix bugs. We do Alpha and Beta testing.
Some of us even spend time on [EMAIL PROTECTED] just to do our bit for
the community and help others with their Ubuntu related problems.

So without point scoring or whatever, please lets just get on with
fixing this problem. I have read all of your posts to this bug as well
as the others. I do however reserve the basic human privilege of
exploring the issue for myself and reporting that which I consider to be
possibly useful.

I would like to say that I DO APPRECIATE the time you have put into this
bug, as I appreciate the work of all the others. Well done all, we're
getting there!

So it seems to be number 3 then of the 3 possible causes I conjectured
for this bug in comment 231?
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/274995/comments/231
The relationship between ALSA and pusleaudio.

[Bug 274995] Re: MASTER storing ALSA mixer element values during shutdown hangs nondeterministically if non-loopback network interfaces are still up

2008-11-24 Thread Dovel
If it is indeed a BIOS bug, why wasn't it present in the last version of
Ubuntu? My BIOS certainly has not changed. It also doesn't explain why
one filesystem was affected and one wasn't. The driver most likely ha
changed. So why is it a BIOS bug if it worked fine before?

The question here is this: is the man walking the dog or is the dog
walking the man?

One question. Am I right in saying that the snd-hda-intel is being used
for ATI Azalia cards as well? What other chips is it being used for? I
have an ATI SBx00 Azalia chip, but the intel driver is in use for it.
Perhaps the intel driver is the main culprit?

Can people please post what sound card they are using and what driver is
being used for it?

My guess is that the intel driver will rate pretty high.

[Bug 274995] Re: MASTER storing ALSA mixer element values during shutdown hangs nondeterministically if non-loopback network interfaces are still up

2008-11-24 Thread Dovel
If it was purely an issue caused by ALSA. Does ALSA have a specific
relationship with pulseaudio that is different to other sound servers?
How is it different? I do not get this issue at all when using ESD,
another sound server. Is someone able to test Robb's idea with the IPV6?
Ie. disabling IPV6 to see what that does to the bug. Still wondering
just why that would have anything to do with it?!?

Still haven't figured out why I don't have any problems on the system I
upgraded from Hardy either. As I reported from my testing it wasn't the
configuration of /etc/hosts.

Has anyone checked out the changelogs and bug reports upstream for
pulseaudio and alsa-utils? The version of Pulseaudio included in
Intrepid is 0.9.10 - which was released in March. ALSA-utils is version
1.0.17 I think.

Time for bed for me - you guys on the sunny side of the globe can have
fun now.

[Bug 274995] Re: MASTER storing ALSA mixer element values during shutdown hangs nondeterministically if non-loopback network interfaces are still up

2008-11-24 Thread Dovel
I am afraid I have some mixed results.

The bug no longer occurs on my laptop as I am now running enlightenment
16 with esd and have removed most of gnome and it's glug - including
Pulseaudio. My problem is solved.

The bug is still present on my Father's computer (73 years old and wanting to
learn the terminal! My Dad that is, not the pc).
I tried killing pulseaudio while logged in to an X session, and it still hung
while shutting down. I tried adding localhost.localdomain and the hostname to
the local ip in /etc/hosts. No effect, so I put localhost under IPV6 as a temp
fix.

Conclusions? Even though I hashed out the Xsession script for
pulseaudio, it still loaded. Even though I killed pulseaudo, ALSA still
froze during shutdown.

Where I completey removed pulseaudio on the laptop, it shuts down nice
and fast even after I removed the fix from /etc/hosts.

So removing pulseaudio stops the bug, killing the process does not.

Hope that makes sense.

[Bug 274995] Re: MASTER storing ALSA mixer element values during shutdown hangs nondeterministically if non-loopback network interfaces are still up

2008-11-23 Thread Dovel
Just a note on the upgraded installation Intrepid 1 above, I do a fresh
install each 2-3 releases of Ubuntu, so either Gutsy or Hardy would have
been a fresh install from CD. Both of those systems had IPV6 enabled
didn't they? While the bug is quite likely with alsa/pulseaudio, it is
brought to our attention by network configurations.

Now it seems from my reading (and correct me if I am wrong) that ALSA
operates on the current machine/filesystem only, whereas pulseaudio is a
sound server, which extends the sounds capabilities of the system by
making it possible or easier to serve sound across networks, between
applications etc. Sort of like X for audio. So if our problem is
anywhere it is either with pulseaudio or network configuration or even
the relationship between ALSA and Pulseaudio.

1) Is there an easy way to remove pulseaudio from the equation, ie an
isolation test, so we only have ALSA and the network running and have
ALSA unaware of or logged in with pulseaudio?

We know that if we remove the computer from the network, our problem at
shutdown disappears. I don't think ALSA really has anything to do with
the network, except through Pulseaudio.

I propose an isolation test (running an affected system without
pulseaudio being loaded) on a few different systems to verify Pulseaudio
as a likely cause of the bug instead of ALSA alone.

2) I will also be checking for network config changes that could affect
this issue between Hardy-Intrepid. Long shot, but could turn something
up. Pulseaudio wasn't included in Gutsy and we haven't heard of this
issue in Hardy, which did have Pulseaudio.

3) Another line of inquiry is to explore the relationship between ALSA
and Pulseaudio. Does anyone know how it works and if this could be the
root of the issue? Could it be that ALSA is still trying to poll for
Pulseaudio on any available hosts or networks (eg. localhost)? Perhaps
that is why the addition of localhost to the /etc/hosts file works. ALSA
can see that Pulseaudio isn't there locally and stops looking. I could
be wrong with this. I don't know how the relationship between them
works.

These 3 areas would seem to me to be the 3 only likely causes of the
bug.

Please feel free to tell me I'm wrong.

[Bug 274995] Re: MASTER storing ALSA mixer element values during shutdown hangs nondeterministically if non-loopback network interfaces are still up

2008-11-23 Thread Dovel
Interesting Robb. I have two installations of Intrepid on my laptop
(which as I said has no Intel hardware, so should not be affected by any
bios or driver bug suggested by Daniel Chen above). The one which I
upgraded from Hardy does not show this fault, but the one which I
installed from the CD does and was fixed by altering /etc/hosts to
include localhost under ip6.

I compared the hosts files of the two installations however and found
that the upgraded one which did not show the fault (Intrepid 1) also did
not have the reference to localhost in the ip6 area. It did however have
more hosts listed under the local domain IP at the top than the CD
installation which did show the fault (Intrepid 2).

Intrepid 1 /etc/hosts (this installation does NOT show this bug and
shuts down normally)

127.0.0.1 refd-lt localhost.localdomain localhost
127.0.1.1 fred-lt

# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0  ip6-localnet
ff00::0  ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1  ip6-allnodes
ff02::2  ip6-allrouters
ff02::3  ip6-allhosts

Intrepid 2 (this fresh installation from CD DOES show the bug and hung during
shutdown) Please note that the localhost in the second section was added to fix
this bug.

127.0.0.1 localhost

2008-11-23 Thread Dovel
I must say also that Robb seems to be doing some good thinking here. I
have no intel hardware at all on my laptop, but this bug appeared. Is
there any difference in the way that network connections are configured
at a base level in Intrepid that may affect this bug?

[Bug 291073] [NEW] Firefox 3.03 freezes when the Print dialog is accessed.

2008-10-30 Thread Dovel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

Using Firefox 3.03 on Intrepid. I normally use the print function in
Firefox to print receipts etc to pdf. When I select print now though I
get an empty dialog window popping up which I cannot close. Firefox
fully freezes and I have to force quit. Doesn't seem to matter if I
select the Print option from the File menu or use the print button on
the toolbar. Print works fine in other applications.

[Bug 290161] Re: Cannot enable compiz using open source driver for ATI Radeon in Intrepid

2008-10-28 Thread Dovel
Tried rolling jockey-gtk and jockey-common back to version
0.5~beta3-0ubuntu3_all.deb, but that didn't work as that is the first
Intrepid version that jockey had fglrx (I think).

In the end, I rebooted and tried again to enable advanced desktop
effects in the Appearance dialog. As jockey made it's appearance,
"Searching for available drivers", I canceled it before it could suggest
fglrx. Compiz is working now just fine. Suggest it may be a bug in
jockey.

[Bug 290161] [NEW] Cannot enable compiz using open source driver for ATI Radeon in Intrepid

2008-10-27 Thread Dovel
Public bug reported:

I have been using the open source driver for my ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 ever
since I installed Intrepid around the start of October and have been able to
use compiz desktop effects just fine. Yesterday (27/10) I tried installing the
fglrx driver using jockey-gtk. It installed ok, but killed my suspend and
hibernate functions, so I disabled it.
When I logged into my computer today, I had no compiz. I tried to enable it in
gnome-appearance-properties, but it only offered me the fglrx driver that I
cannot use without losing function on my laptop. It said that it could not
enable desktop effects when I rejected the fglrx driver.

This is a major issue, as the fglrx driver, according to ATI themselves
and as experienced by myself, disrupts suspend and hibernate.

Will try rolling jockey-gtk back to an earlier version and post results.

[Bug 287886] [NEW] Cannot add extensions to openoffice 3.0

2008-10-22 Thread Dovel
Public bug reported:

I recently added openoffice 3.0 to Intrepid Beta through backports.

When I try to add extensions (like the pdfimport extension) via the
Extension Manager, I can select the extension file, but it will not
complete installing. Instead a warning message comes up with, "unable to
load component library". All installed parts of openoffice are version
1:3.0.0 according to Synaptic.
