[Bug 1886345] Re: [i915][snb] Icons and text corrupted and/or missing
Corruption regressed to the point that system would become unresponsive as the display flickered back and forth between an old and current state. If the system monitor app was running you could see the plots progress in an odd stop motion. Tried a number of other distributions but kept getting corruption. Reverted the system back to Ubuntu 18.04, which was the last release that didn't have video corruption. Have been running 18.04 for a week with no evidence of display issues. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1886345 Title: [i915][snb] Icons and text corrupted and/or missing To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1886345/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1886345] [NEW] Display gets corrupted and text gets replaced by odd characters
Public bug reported: This is a fresh install of 2020.04. Issue is that the display routinely gets corrupted and flickers with blocks of previously open windows. If left without a restart, the system menu text will get replaced by odd characters and system dialog boxes will not display, buttons for the dialog boxes will briefly appear with no text when cursor is over them. Very occasionally, the system will stop responding to the mouse and keyboard after clicking an icon on the dash. *** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1867668 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1867668 Thanks for the update. To be honest, not sure if my issues were exactly the same as these two bugs, they are are both for upgrades while mine is for a fresh install. A lot of the discussion in this bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1867668 seems to be focused on /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf, which doesn't exist on my system. Are there any bugs filed for graphic issues with a new install of 20.04? Note, I've switched to Wayland and have seen a significant improvement. There are still some issues, but they are much less frequent. [Bug 780424] Re: Xorg unresponsive after screensaver unlock with Dual Head
Thanks for the response. As if by magic it did it again today. I killed off chrome and virtualbox with no response. Killed off the screensaver with again no change. Compiz and X just sat at 100% cpu and zero response to the mouse/keyboard on the screen. I don't tend to run much, lots of gnome-terminal's, firefox, opera, chrome and virtualbox are pretty much all that's ever running. I'm not sure if it is the same issue or not but I found this: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=162243 Which at least partly matches both the hardware (multi nvidia GPU, multi-monitor), Ubuntu and behaviour but I can't trigger it with the script the OP has posted. [Bug 764051] Re: Second monitor useless in dual desktop mode
While there is a bodge to get things working (although I still get some strange boarders and window behaviour) this is a *MAJOR* out of the box functionality breaker. Multi-monitor should "just work" (as it does in Windows[0]), it used to be easy (for me anyway), install "Nvidia X Server Settings", click a few buttons and it worked. Other minor display issues get medium[1], major functionality removed with no replacement just gets low? As it stands this is an update blocker for natty (and potentially above), I'm *not* updating my work PC (three screens) until it just works, not because I can't bodge things to get it working but because quite frankly I should not have to. [0] I understand the reasons why its tricky however when someone is coming from a 2+ screen Windows 7 PC there is no way they're ever going to try Ubuntu (or any other distro) if only one screen works without messing about with the command line! [Bug 780424] [NEW] Xorg unresponsive after screensaver unlock with Dual Head
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg As background I'm running multi-GPU multi-session multi-head with 3 screens on two NVIDIA GPU Quadro NVS 290 (G86GL) cards (one on one, two on the other). Machine is a quad core with 8G ram and 8G swap. Individual gnome sessions on each screen (ie I can't transfer programs between screens and each screen has full menus). Occasionally after unlocking my mouse cursor rapidly flickers between screens and the machine is totally unresponsive at the console. Logging in via ssh and I can see load and cpu usage rapidly increases, memory usage also goes through the roof until all memory and swap is consumed at which point the oom-killer kicks in (or possibly Xorg crashes) , kills Xorg and I can log back in (with my session lost). In the mistaken assumption that I didn't have enough swap I increased it (from 2G to 10G) all this did was allow the machine to be a little bit more responsive for longer but Xorg still continued to consume memory, last time it got to 11.2G of virtual and a load average of 24 before I rebooted the machine. As a comparison, right now Xorg has 153m with load averages all at ~0.5. While I realise this may not include enough as is this is a reasonably regular (and very annoying) bug for me, if any further details can be collected at the time please let me know, I can (within reason) run anything as needed. ** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/780424 Title: Xorg unresponsive after screensaver unlock with Dual Head -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 774941] [NEW] No keyboard focus on second screen with Duel Head after upgrade to 11.04
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: unity Dual head dual session does not work with Unity. Unable to run anything in the second screen (the screen is 'there' but all I see is my wallpaper). Background: This is a system originally built I think as 7.04 and upgraded every release, dual SLI GPU graphics card with dual head, dual X sessions due to performance issues using multi GPU (same as multiple video cards). Examples: 1) Move mouse to second screen, press Alt-F2 Expected: Program requester appears on second screen. Actual: Program requester appears on first screen. Notes: Should a program be run, it appears on the first screen. 2) Right click on second screen, select "create launcher...", select the "Name:" box, attempt to type anything. Expected: Text appears in the "Name:" box. Actual: Text appears in the previously selected window on the first screen. [Bug 591165] Re: TimeZone cannot find time zone if called after Class.getResource(..)
I've learned a little more about this. Hopefully some of this will be useful to people who want to work around the issue, or to Ubuntu package managers who have the power to fix it. The problem is that, when multiple versions of the JVM are installed, the timezone directory (jre/lib/zi) is shared via a symlink. Presumably this was done to save disk space, but it turns out to be a bad idea. Each JVM should have its own copy of the timezone data. So, for users, the most basic workaround is to replace the symlinked zi directory with a copy. To give a specific example: On my machine, the directory: /usr/lib/jvm/ia32-java-6-sun-1.6.0.22/jre/lib/zi is a symlink to ../../../java-6-sun-1.6.0.22/jre/lib/zi/ If i remove the symlink and copy the contents of the target dir to a new (real) zi directory, the problem is fixed. There is another workaround that does not involve copying files. The downside is that you have to add a java System property to the command line whenever you run a Java program: "-Dsun.io.useCanonCaches=false" will do the trick. The underlying problem is that Java (specifically java.io.UnixFileSystem) has a caching mechanism that gets confused by sym links that live under ${java.home}. Based on the comments in the source file, the caching mechanism assumes that there are no symlinks under ${java.home}, but that assumption is false on Ubuntu. So, we seem to have 3 options: 1. Get the Java people to get rid of that assumption; or 2. Get Ubuntu to stop using symlinks under ${java.home}; or 3. I've just updated to 10.10 Maverick Meerkat and the bug is still there, one slight change/improvement is that where originally I stated: "Once anything has been typed then the mouse is unable to 'pick up' the 'active' screen (prior to anything being typed it works)". This appears to now be fixed, the active window can be 'picked up' even while keyboard focus is stuck in the remote desktop session. On thing however I have noticed and I don't believe was originally a problem is that you now don't need to select anything on the remote desktop, just moving the mouse over and back again is enough to swap the keyboard focus to the remote desktop again. Let me know if you need apport logs again. -- NV43 [GeForce 6600 GT] [10de:0140] dual head with full screen tsclient / remote-desktop prevents keyboard focus following mouse focus for previously selected windows. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/418209 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 418209] Re: dual head with full screen tsclient / remote-desktop prevents keyboard focus following mouse focus for previously selected windows.
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: Hardware / Software: Machine is running 64 bit Ubuntu 9.04 (upgraded from 8.04),has a dual GPU video card running dual head working otherwise perfectly with dual X-sessions and gnome. Problem: If I run tsclient full screen (not sure if it matters but it's to a Windows 2003 server) on one screen then keyboard focus does not follow mouse focus when changing to the other screen UNLESS I select a different window to the previously selected one. If the remote desktop is not full screen then everything works as expected. To Reproduce: 1) Configure machine dual head, dual x-sessions. 2) Open tsclient on one screen (for reference the right screen), connect to a remote machine full screen. 3) Open a couple of windows in the other screen (I'm using opera and gedit, again for reference the left screen). 4) Open something on the remote desktop (eg notepad), type something. 5) Select something on the other screen (eg gedit), type something. 6) Reselect notepad on the remote desktop, type something 7) Reselect gedit, type something 8) Attempt to select the top bar on gedit and move it round the screen. Expected results: 1) Keyboard focus follows mouse focus, step 7 should results in text in gedit. 2) gedit window should be moved by mouse, step 8 should result in the window being 'picked up' and moved round the screen. Actual results: Keyboard focus stays in the remote desktop session, anything typed appears in the previous window selected in the remote desktop. Once anything has been typed then the mouse is unable to 'pick up' the 'active' screen (prior to anything being typed it works), selecting a non active screen works exactly as expected and keyboard focus is given to that window. Workaround: 1) Select a non-active window (on the left screen), then select gedit again, type something. 2) Maximise rather than full screen the remote-desktop / tsclient session. Other Notes: Behavior is not consistent on all applications, Firefox works exactly as expected. Opera, gedit, gnome-terminal does not. + + + + + + + + + --- + Architecture: amd64 + DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04 + DkmsStatus: nvidia-current, 195.36.15, 2.6.32-22-generic, x86_64: installed + Lsusb: + Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub + Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub + NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia + Package: xorg 1:7.5+5ubuntu1 + PackageArchitecture: amd64 + ProcCmdLine: root=UUID=f3d8f999-b3a6-44b1-8081-be35ce4ce5fa ro quiet splash + ProcEnviron: + LANG=en_GB.utf8 + SHELL=/bin/bash + ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-22.33-generic 2.6.32.11+drm33.2 + Tags: lucid lucid + Uname: Linux 2.6.32-22-generic x86_64 + UserGroups: adm admin audio cdrom dialout dip floppy fuse lpadmin mythtv plugdev video + dmi.bios.date: 10/27/2005 + dmi.bios.vendor: Award Software International, Inc. + dmi.bios.version: F6 + dmi.board.name: NF-CK804 + dmi.board.vendor: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. + dmi.board.version: x.x + dmi.chassis.type: 3 + dmi.modalias: dmi:bvnAwardSoftwareInternational,Inc.:bvrF6:bd10/27/2005:svn:pn:pvr:rvnGigabyteTechnologyCo.,Ltd.:rnNF-CK804:rvrx.x:cvn:ct3:cvr: + system: + distro: Ubuntu + codename: lucid + architecture: x86_64 + kernel: 2.6.32-22-generic ** Attachment added: "BootDmesg.txt" https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/bugs/418209/+attachment/1572449/+files/BootDmesg.txt -- dual head with full screen tsclient / remote-desktop prevents keyboard focus following mouse focus for previously selected windows. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/418209 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
