[Bug 1539266] Re: 14.04.4: work-around "SMBIOS-implementations-newer-than-version-2-8..." junk from dmidecode

Are you sure this was fixed? I still get a crazy "SMBIOS-
implementations-newer-than-version-2-8-are-not-fully-supported-by-this-
version-of-dmidecode" with Ubiquity 2.21.37.1.

[Bug 885592] Re: No parent folder button

2011-11-03 Thread Earl Malmrose
Clicking breadcrumbs is a poor workaround for such an often used
activity. First, most of time the parent breadcrumb is hidden, so you
first need to click the reveal button before the parent button even
shows up. This essentially doubles the number of clicks to navigate to
the parent. Furthermore, the parent breadcrumb moves around, and isn't
always in the same location. This also slows down up-navigation. Lack of
a true parent-button is a huge step backwards in productivity.

[Bug 677696] [NEW] Synaptics Touchpad not working in Ubuntu 10.10

2010-11-19 Thread Earl Malmrose
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

Although the touchpad does not work by default in Ubuntu, if I boot into

Suspend/resume when the touchpad is working allows the touchpad to
continue working.

Restart or Hibernate/resume will cause the touchpad to be non-functional
again.

[Bug 595822] Re: Hibernate does not power off the machine

2010-06-25 Thread Earl Malmrose
I'll see if we can encourage some bios fixes.

Running pm-suspend doesn't display any messages, but after a few seconds
the screen goes blank with the backlight still on.

Booting with acpi=off was already tested without quiet and splash. No
additional messages.

[Bug 595822] [NEW] Hibernate does not power off the machine

2010-06-18 Thread Earl Malmrose
Public bug reported:

/var/log/pm-suspend.log ends with performing hibernate, yet the
machine does not power off. Turning the machine off manually, then back
on, does not resume. Suspend does not work either. Even a regular
shutdown doesn't always work.

[Bug 580651] [NEW] brightness hotkeys not functional on Gigabyte Spring Peak

2010-05-14 Thread Earl Malmrose
Public bug reported:

The brightness hotkeys generate no events. Neither do the wifi, 3G, and
BT toggle hotkeys. The volume hotkeys do work.

This is very similar to bug #571421, but on a different laptop.

[Bug 580664] [NEW] touchpad not functional on Gigabyte Spring Peak

2010-05-14 Thread Earl Malmrose
Public bug reported:

On a default install the touchpad does not work. Adding i8042.noloop
to the kernel parameters does get the touchpad working. A possible side-
effect may be that sometimes key-release events are lost, so
i8042.noloop may not be the best solution. I notice that sometimes
when pressing down-arrow to scroll down a heavy webpage, sometimes when
I release the down-arrow it keeps scrolling down until I press down-
arrow again.

[Bug 512185] Re: Touchpad not working

2010-02-03 Thread Earl Malmrose
While the touchpad works with the kernel paramter tweak, there is no way
adjust any of the settings. Particularly sensitivity really needs to be
turned up a bit.

$ sudo tpconfig -i
Found Synaptics Touchpad.
Firmware: 8.96 (multiple-byte mode).
Sensor type: unknown (0).
Geometry: rectangular/landscape/up.
Packets: absolute, 80 packets per second.
Corner taps disabled; no tap gestures.
Edge motion: none.
Z threshold: 6 of 7.
2 button mode; corner tap is right button click.

$ synclient -l
Couldn't find synaptics properties. No synaptics driver loaded?

The directions as phil described work perfectly.

Shouldn't this module be named something other than psmouse.ko?

In examining the chip inside the case, I found it labeled STL3888. I
think the project at http://sourceforge.net/projects/fsp-lnxdrv/ might
be relevant, but I'm not familiar with how to use it.

[Bug 454496] [NEW] Touchpad not recognized

2009-10-18 Thread Earl Malmrose
Public bug reported:

Touchpad driver is not being loaded. Movement and tap-to-click do still
work, but scrolling does not.

[Bug 403869] Re: Soltech TA12 touchpad scrolling area not flush to the right

2009-08-01 Thread Earl Malmrose
This is hard to describe. Let me describe it like this. Consider 4
vertical lines. Between lines A and B is the area of the touchpad that
affects movement of the mouse. Between lines C and D is the area of the
touchpad that performs scrolling.

In the previous xinput command, 1632 is line A, and 5312 is line B. Line
C seems to always be the same as line B. If line B is moved to the left,
then the width of the scroll area increases. If line B is moved to the
right, the scroll area decreases.

Line D never moves. So, if line B (and C) move to the right of D, then
the scroll area has a negative width, which results in scrolling being
completely disabled.

Does that make sense?

2009-07-23 Thread Earl Malmrose

ranges are observered:

700-1100 no mouse movement

5200-5900 scrolling movement

[Bug 276990] Re: iwlagn causes kernel panic on 802.11n wifi

2008-11-01 Thread Earl Malmrose
So far so good. No crashes with those modules installed. Now all the
panic text quietly goes into the log file rather than killing the system
- which happens on average about once every 10 minutes. I'm always
seeing wrong command queue 63, command id 0x0.

[Bug 272015] [NEW] Intel 4965 causes kernel panic

2008-09-19 Thread Earl Malmrose
Public bug reported:

I'm testing Intrepid Alpha 5 with updated applied as of 9/17/08.
Connection Info dialog shows the driver as iwlagn.

When wifi is on the kernel panic happens within minutes. If I turn wifi
off and use ethernet, there is no panic. This occurs with the Intel 4965
wifi and a N router. Swapping the wifi to an Intel 3945 eliminates the
panic.

Next time it panics I'll take a picture of the stack trace.

I will test with the newly released Alpha 6 and report any improvements.

[Bug 269656] Re: AN IRRELEVANT LICENSE IS PRESENTED TO YOU FREE-OF-CHARGE ON STARTUP

2008-09-16 Thread Earl Malmrose
@Christopher Blizzard: You claimed The use of Ubuntu is also defined by
a license agreement, it's just harder to find. Can you please point out
where this license agreement is? We are unaware of any agreement that is
made by a person to *use* Ubuntu. If Mozilla is going to require users
to agree to a EULA to use Firefox, then Firefox needs to move out of the
Ubuntu main repository - it is not free software.

[Bug 269656] Re: AN IRRELEVANT LICENSE IS PRESENTED TO YOU FREE-OF-CHARGE ON STARTUP

2008-09-14 Thread Earl Malmrose
As the owner of a Linux hardware company I will offer my position:

EULAs are extremely offensive in a base install. I strongly recommend
removing Firefox from Main and using a rebranded browser by default. If
the EULA is not removed from Ubuntu, we will remove it ourselves (by
removing Firefox as part of our installation procedures). We will not
throw EULAs in our customers faces.
