[Bug 1538741] Re: Xorg freeze

I suspect that this was caused by hardware problems.

[Bug 1538741] Re: Xorg freeze

2016-04-29 Thread Erik Brangs
I suspect that this might be DPMS related. When I use xscreensaver with
screen blanking but no DPMS, the problem doesn't seem to occur. When I
use xscreensaver with DPMS and standby (setting suspend and off to high
values so they don't get triggered), freezes occur when trying to use
the computer again after the screen has been blank for some time.

[Bug 1538741] Re: Xorg freeze

2016-04-06 Thread Erik Brangs
I just had a freeze using 4.0.3 so it's likely that the chance of
occurrence is just too low for me to properly bisect this if it truly is
a kernel problem. If someone knows whether this could be a kernel
problem or if it's likely to be something else, I would appreciate the
information.

[Bug 1538741] Re: Xorg freeze

2016-03-15 Thread Erik Brangs
** Description changed:

- I've looked at the page at
- https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze and can reproduce the
- bug at will by entering the command
+ I've got Xorg freezes from time to time. Previously, I was able to
+ reproduce it with

  sleep 1; xset s activate

- that's mentioned on the page. The freeze occurs when the screen content
- reappears after moving the cursor. Cursor is still movable but clicking
- has no effect.
+ as described at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze .
+ That's no longer possible.
+
+ However, freezes happen from time to time when I try to use the computer
+ after the screen has been deactivated.
+
+ I suspect it's a kernel problem because changing the kernel makes a
difference:
+ - on some kernels it doesn't seem to occur at all (e.g. 4.0.3 from
mainline-crack) or the frequency is just so low that I haven't seen it yet
+ - on newer kernels (e.g. 4.5 rc* and later, including the 4.5 release), the
system restores the screen but Xorg freezes up almost instantly afterwards
+ - on some kernels, the system doesn't properly restore the screen, there's a
pattern with stripes or a single color (e.g. 4.0.4 from mainline-crack)

[Bug 1538741] Re: Xorg freeze

2016-03-15 Thread Erik Brangs
I'm still bisecting, it's probably either
- fcfb5aa246c80df8b0a2ccadd7284b4c189149b0 (
https://git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-kernel-test/ubuntu/+source/linux/+git/mainline-crack/commit/?id=fcfb5aa246c80df8b0a2ccadd7284b4c189149b0
 )
or
- 09af0842dac496aae363719c449cb88dcc953299 (
https://git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-kernel-test/ubuntu/+source/linux/+git/mainline-crack/commit/?id=09af0842dac496aae363719c449cb88dcc953299
 )

from the mainline-crack repository ( https://git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-
kernel-test/ubuntu/+source/linux/+git/mainline-crack ) . AFAIK my Lenovo
T60 doesn't have an i915 chipset so it's probably the vblank commit.

The latest released kernel, 4.5 ( http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v4.5-wily/ ) still has freezes for me.

[Bug 1538741] Re: Xorg freeze

2016-03-11 Thread Erik Brangs
I'm in the process of bisecting.

The latest kernel ( http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v4.5-rc7-wily/ ) is affected by a freeze, too. I'm not sure
if it's the same as the one that I'm seeing in the 4.0.x series: On the
latest kernel, the system simply freezes after trying to use it after
the screen has blanked out. The original screen content is properly
restored. In the 4.0.x series freeze, the the screen content shows a
single color or a stripe pattern when the freeze happens.

[Bug 1538741] Re: Xorg freeze

2016-03-03 Thread Erik Brangs
X windows still freezes when I haven't used it for some time.

I can't reproduce it by entering a command but the freeze still happens.

The kernel from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v4.0.4-wily/ definitively has the problem. The latest
kernel ( http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.5-rc6-wily/ )
is also affected. I'm currently using http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v4.0.3-wily/ which seems to be fine for now. If the kernel
turns out to be good, I'll try to narrow the problem down by bisecting.

2016-02-02 Thread Erik Brangs
I've upgraded the BIOS to version 2.27 rev 2 from 2011 and upgraded the
kernel.

The problem still occurs with 4.2.0-27-generic #32-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 22
04:49:08 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux.

I also tested 3.19.0-43 again and wasn't able to reproduce the problem
with "sleep 1; xset s activate". So it's likely that 3.19.0-43 doesn't
have the problem.

bug at will by entering the command

sleep 1; xset s activate

that's mentioned on the page. The freeze occurs when the screen content
reappears after moving the cursor. Cursor is still movable but clicking
has no effect.

[Bug 1484265] [NEW] Blank screen (instead of splash screen) during boot on Thinkpad T60 with Radeon graphics

2015-08-12 Thread Erik Brangs
Public bug reported:

During the boot of Ubuntu 15.04 on my Lenovo Thinkpad T60, I don't see a
splash screen. The boot sequence is GRUB - blank screen - login screen
but it should be GRUB - splash screen - login screen.

I asked about this on Launchpad answers (
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/270270 ) and was told to
file a bug report if this wasn't a duplicate. Apologies in advance if it
is one; I wasn't able to find a matching report with the search
function. I hope that this is the right package,
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage#During_boot seems to
suggest plymouth is for splash screen related bugs.

If I reconfigure GRUB to not use a splash screen (by using
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= in /etc/default/grub), I have correct
output (i.e. I see the text messages).

[Bug 1453214] [NEW] Uninstalling the jayatana package breaks Java invocations in Ubuntu 15.04 until restart

2015-05-08 Thread Erik Brangs
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu version: Ubuntu 15.04
Package version: 2.7-0ubuntu3

When the jayatana package is installed, the message Picked up
JAVA_TOOL_OPTIONS: -javaagent:/usr/share/java/jayatanaag.jar is printed
for every Java invocation. I found this rather annoying because I'm
often running an Ant-based Java build which will print this for most
steps. That's why I deinstalled jayatana in Ubuntu 15.04. I have no use
for it because I'm not using Unity.

If the jayatana package is uninstalled in Ubuntu 15.04, subsequent
invocations of Java will fail with the error message:

Picked up JAVA_TOOL_OPTIONS: -javaagent:/usr/share/java/jayatanaag.jar
Error opening zip file or JAR manifest missing : /usr/share/java/jayatanaag.jar
Error occurred during initialization of VM
agent library failed to init: instrument

The package should clean up to make sure that subsequent invocations of
Java work. If that's not possible, it should at least give a message
that a restart is required.

[Bug 1407991] Re: Xorg freeze

2015-01-08 Thread Erik Brangs
It seems that this was a configuration problem that did not have any
effect on earlier versions of Ubuntu. It disappeared after reinstalling
GRUB2. It seems that the additional parameter text in the kernel
arguments (see the line for ProcKernelCmdLine above) caused this
problem on my system.

[Bug 1407991] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2015-01-06 Thread Erik Brangs
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from Ubuntu 14.04 to Ubuntu 14.10, the system seems to
hang during boot.

I see the following screens:
1. GRUB boot menu
2. blank screen
3. a screen with output. This disappears quite fast so I was only able to read
the first line which is Restoring resolver state... or something similar.
4. another screen with output. The last line of the output is Starting
upowerd...done. . After that, the system seems to hang.

However, I'm still able to switch to another terminal via Alt+F2 and
login there. If I use startx from there, a graphical environment starts.
I'm not sure which one it is, but it does not seem to be XFCE which I'm
normally using (I've configured XFCE to use a dark desktop theme: grey
font on black background). This environment only has a background and
some desktop icons. There is nothing else present, e.g. there are no
bars.

[Bug 1324438] Re: [needs-packaging] libvrb0 libvrb0-dev needs-packaging Trusty

2014-05-30 Thread Erik Brangs
It seems that the package was removed from Debian in February 2014
because it was orphaned in Debian and considered unmaintained (see

AFAIK imports from Debian have already stopped for 14.04. So the updated
package won't be available before Ubuntu 14.10.

[Bug 1218642] Re: read-edid 3.0.0 released, needs upgrade

2014-01-20 Thread Erik Brangs
The package is directly copied from Debian. It was orphaned in Debian
(see http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=733145) in
December 2013. The best way to get a new version into Ubuntu would
probably be to get someone to adopt the package in Debian.

[Bug 1208819] [NEW] Terminal shows printouts radeon: Acquired access to AA optimizations. and radeon: Released access to AA optimizations. during normal operation

2013-08-06 Thread Erik Brangs
Public bug reported:

When doing normal work in a terminal (xfce4-terminal 0.6.1) on Xubuntu
13.04, sometimes the following message is shown: radeon: Acquired
access to AA optimizations. A short time later, another message will be
shown: radeon: Acquired access to AA optimizations.

I don't recall seeing those kinds of messages before and I don't think
that they belong in a normal terminal.

I installed updates today (including a graphics driver update) and I
suspect that the messages are related to that. They might also be
related to the upgrade to Ubuntu 13.04 (from 12.10) that I recently did.

The attached example seems unsuitable to reproduce the original bug.
I'll open a new issue once I have something suitable.

[Bug 1115544] Re: Memory corruption on PowerPc when using setjmp/longjmp

2013-02-17 Thread Erik Brangs
The output of uname -a for the system is:
Linux rple 3.8.0-0-powerpc-e500mc #2-Ubuntu SMP Sun Jan 13 03:54:50 UTC 2013
ppc ppc ppc GNU/Linux

AFAIK the processor is a Freescale QorIQ P4080 (see
http://www.freescale.com/webapp/sps/site/prod_summary.jsp?code=P4080 ).

[Bug 1115544] [NEW] Memory corruption on PowerPc when using setjmp/longjmp

2013-02-04 Thread Erik Brangs
Public bug reported:

I'm using Quantal on PowerPC. I'm compiling an open-source application
that uses setjmp/longjmp. The code compiles fine but when executing the
code, the error message longjmp causes uninitialized stack frame is
printed and the program crashes.

The code is regularly regression tested on PowerPC (with gcc 4.1.2) and
on x86 and the tests don't show this problem.

On the Quantal PowerPC system, the code works fine without optimizations
(i.e. using -O0). It also works on that system when compiled with clang
(with optimizations). In the case of clang, some minor changes needed to
be made to the source to make it compile.

Therefore, I suspect that this is a bug in gcc. I'm not sure if I can
produce a reduced test case from the open source application. However, a
slightly modified version of a setjmp example from Wikipedia (code
attached) shows similar (albeit not identical) symptoms.

The expected output of the attached code is:
Child loop begin
Parent
Child loop end
Parent

The output of the attached code when compiled on powerpc with gcc -O
filename is:
Child loop begin
Parent
][- varies from run to run. I guess the string is being overwritten]
Parent

Interestingly, this problem disappears with -O2 in the attached code
(the problem in the open-source application doesn't disappear at O2,
though).

Output of apt-cache policy gcc-4.7:
  Installed: 4.7.2-2ubuntu1
  Candidate: 4.7.2-2ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 4.7.2-2ubuntu1 0
500 http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/ quantal/main powerpc Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

PS: I can't paste the output of 'lsb_release -rd' because I'm working in
a chroot and lsb_release isn't installed there. If you really need it, I
will ask for installation of the package.
