[Bug 198453] [NEW] PulseAudio prevents programs relying on ALSA to work correctly
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: pulseaudio On latest Hardy amd64 running on Lenovo N100 laptop with Intel HDA sound card sound does work through PulseAudio, but programs relying on ALSA don't work properly. For example, aplay always reports that alsa device is busy. VLC doesn't produce any sound. So does Twinkle as well. Creating /etc/asound.conf as suggested in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PulseAudio (this file is not created by default) doesn't help too much. In this case, aplay works as intended. VLC produces sound, too, but on attempt to stop playing PulseAudio hangs completely. Skype doesn't produce any sound. Twinkle produces no sound output, though microphone works correctly. ** Affects: pulseaudio (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- PulseAudio prevents programs relying on ALSA to work correctly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/198453 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 197156] [NEW] DNS problems when running PPTP VPN
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: network-manager-pptp Running Ubuntu Hardy with latest updates I have bumped into a problem. My ISP provides a huge local network, from which Internet can be accessed via PPTP VPN. There are 2 DNS servers in local network, as well as 2 in the VPN, and the latter 2 are supposed to be Internet DNS servers (primary and secondary). As I connect to the local network via eth0 interface resolv.conf is properly updated by network-manager. After connecting to the VPN (that actually provides Internet access), resolv.conf is updated as well, but the VPN's DNS servers are added to the end of the file. I suppose this makes system try local DNS servers first (as they are first in resolv.conf) and leads to huge conflicts in DNS resolving, rendering Internet connection almost useless. sudo resolvconf -d eth0 deletes the unneeded records from resolv.conf and thus eliminates the problem, but network-manager seems to update this information once in a while, and falls back to non-working resolv.conf. I believe that after activating ppp0 interface, network-manager should at least make sure that ppp0's DNS records are first in resolv.conf (when options Use peer's DNS and Peer DNS through tunnel are checked). Otherwise resolvconf (being run with no options) checks interfaces in alphabetical order, thus making eth0's DNS records superior to ppp0's. ** Affects: network-manager-pptp (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- DNS problems when running PPTP VPN https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/197156 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 188127] Re: Update manager shows warning that system was not updated for a long time (not true)
Now, this becomes more and more funny. Neither apt-get, nor update- manager update the timestamp when I invoke apt-get update or click update in update-manager manually. At the same time, update-manager seems to be updating the timestamp every morning during automatic search for updates. The funniest thing is, update-manager has updated the timestamp today at 7:35 AM (it always checks for update at approximately this time. The trouble is, the laptop was connected to the router, but router was not connected to the Internet at that time! I've unplugged the ISP cable from router at 10 PM yesterday, and plugged it back at 1 PM today, so there was absolutely no chance for update-manager to fetch updates at 7:35 AM — but the timestamp says it did... -- Update manager shows warning that system was not updated for a long time (not true) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/188127 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 190954] [NEW] Some compose sequences are not available
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xkb-data It is supposed that /usr/share/X11/locale/en_US.UTF-8/Compose lists all of the compose sequences that are available in corresponding locale. In Ubuntu, not all of those are available. Some examples include ĉ (c with circumflex) that is supposed to be produced using MultiKey-^-c, ĝ (g with circumflex) that is supposed to be MultiKey-^-g and ™ (trademark sign), supposedly MultiKey-t-m. There are many more non-working sequences. Thus, if I charge the battery up till 100% and then unplug the power, BAT0 shows the actual battery status, while BAT1 constantly shows 100%. When the power cord is plugged back in, BAT0 starts charging and BAT1 jumps down to where the battery was on the moment of bringing the power cord in and stays there. This behaviour leads to wrong estimation of battery life in gnome-power- manager and to wrong behaviour: for example, if 2% charge is actually left, and BAT1 still shows 100%, gnome-power-manager thinks 12% of summary charge is available, and doesn't put system to suspend-to-disk mode as it is supposed to when there's less than 5% charge remaining. ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Non-existent laptop battery detected https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/184459 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I duly apologize for not reporting in for two weeks — the New Year and Christmas (which is January 7 in Russia) kicked me off a good deal. Well, now I finally have a lot of new information here. First of all, I should say that running the latest Hardy available at this moment (that is, 2.6.24-3-generic 64bit kernel) I finally succeeded to wake up from STR! There's no sound after resume (the corresponding lines follow), but otherwise resuming went just grand. * Setting up ALSA...[ OK ] FATAL: Module acpi_sbs not found. FATAL: Module acpi_sbs not found. I should mention that Hardy currently fails to load ipw3945 kernel module, thus denying the WLAN functionality (see bug #181638 for details). This can well be the WLAN that didn't allow the system to wake up previously (but that surely is my own ill-based guess). Anyway, I guess we suddenly have a serious progress on the matter, and I'm eager to provide any information that can help solving STR problems completely before Hardy hits the mirrors. To my great pity, I'm not that good on debugging myself, so I need to be guided by someone who knows what needs to be done. [Bug 114312] Re: Lenovo 3000 N100 overheats when running 2.6.20-15-generic
I seriously doubt you can test this with a LiveCD, though it is possible to make a LiveCD use swap partition (at least Knoppix does, so I think there's a way to make Ubuntu do it). I didn't use LiveCD to test this anyway. I have installed Hardy Alpha2 onto a dedicated partition on my hard drive for testing, and it did well. For those of you who feels like going this way I would recommend NOT to use your working system's /home as testing system's /home. Some applications are newer versions in Hardy, they convert their files to newer formats, and then the applications installed on your working system may not read the data properly. -- Lenovo 3000 N100 overheats when running 2.6.20-15-generic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/114312 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 114312] Re: Lenovo 3000 N100 overheats when running 2.6.20-15-generic
Diego, I'm sorry the link I've provided is unavailable. What I needed to do to get things working was installing uswsusp package and make sure the hal-system-power-hibernate-linux script runs s2disk command instead of what it runs by default. That solves the fan spin-up problem. Restoring the original hal-system-power-hibernate-linux script results in fan not turning on after a wakeup from suspend-to-disk. Since the original way to suspend-to-disk doesn't work properly and may result in permanent damage through system overheat if one does not notice silence from the fan I, with all respect, seriously doubt that it's wise to close this bug. Until the original Ubuntu installation can cause permanent physical damage to user's equipment, the bug should not be closed, should it? -- Lenovo 3000 N100 overheats when running 2.6.20-15-generic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/114312 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
