[Bug 198453] [NEW] PulseAudio prevents programs relying on ALSA to work correctly

2008-03-04 Thread Evgeny nekr0z Kuznetsov
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

On latest Hardy amd64 running on Lenovo N100 laptop with Intel HDA sound
card sound does work through PulseAudio, but programs relying on ALSA
don't work properly.

For example, aplay always reports that alsa device is busy. VLC doesn't
produce any sound. So does Twinkle as well.

Creating /etc/asound.conf as suggested in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PulseAudio (this file is not created by default)
doesn't help too much. In this case, aplay works as intended. VLC
produces sound, too, but on attempt to stop playing PulseAudio hangs
completely. Skype doesn't produce any sound. Twinkle produces no sound
output, though microphone works correctly.

[Bug 197156] [NEW] DNS problems when running PPTP VPN

2008-02-29 Thread Evgeny nekr0z Kuznetsov
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager-pptp

Running Ubuntu Hardy with latest updates I have bumped into a problem.

My ISP provides a huge local network, from which Internet can be
accessed via PPTP VPN. There are 2 DNS servers in local network, as well
as 2 in the VPN, and the latter 2 are supposed to be Internet DNS
servers (primary and secondary).

As I connect to the local network via eth0 interface resolv.conf is
properly updated by network-manager. After connecting to the VPN (that
actually provides Internet access), resolv.conf is updated as well, but
the VPN's DNS servers are added to the end of the file. I suppose this
makes system try local DNS servers first (as they are first in
resolv.conf) and leads to huge conflicts in DNS resolving, rendering
Internet connection almost useless.

sudo resolvconf -d eth0
deletes the unneeded records from resolv.conf and thus eliminates the problem,
but network-manager seems to update this information once in a while, and falls
back to non-working resolv.conf.

I believe that after activating ppp0 interface, network-manager should
at least make sure that ppp0's DNS records are first in resolv.conf
(when options Use peer's DNS and Peer DNS through tunnel are
checked). Otherwise resolvconf (being run with no options) checks
interfaces in alphabetical order, thus making eth0's DNS records
superior to ppp0's.

[Bug 188127] Re: Update manager shows warning that system was not updated for a long time (not true)

2008-02-24 Thread Evgeny nekr0z Kuznetsov
Now, this becomes more and more funny. Neither apt-get, nor update-
manager update the timestamp when I invoke apt-get update or click
update in update-manager manually. At the same time, update-manager
seems to be updating the timestamp every morning during automatic search
for updates.

The funniest thing is, update-manager has updated the timestamp today at
7:35 AM (it always checks for update at approximately this time. The
trouble is, the laptop was connected to the router, but router was not
connected to the Internet at that time! I've unplugged the ISP cable
from router at 10 PM yesterday, and plugged it back at 1 PM today, so
there was absolutely no chance for update-manager to fetch updates at
7:35 AM — but the timestamp says it did...

[Bug 190954] [NEW] Some compose sequences are not available

2008-02-11 Thread Evgeny nekr0z Kuznetsov
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xkb-data

It is supposed that /usr/share/X11/locale/en_US.UTF-8/Compose lists all
of the compose sequences that are available in corresponding locale. In
Ubuntu, not all of those are available.

Some examples include ĉ (c with circumflex) that is supposed to be
produced using MultiKey-^-c, ĝ (g with circumflex) that is supposed to
be MultiKey-^-g and ™ (trademark sign), supposedly MultiKey-t-m. There
are many more non-working sequences.

I think we either need to strip that file of non-working sequences, so
that it can be actually used as a reference, or else (and much better)
make the non-working sequences work.

Issue is present on all versions of Ubuntu I've ever used (since 5.10 up
to current Hardy Alpha).

The same messages can be found in kern.log and debug as well. Wireless
card (eth1) is working and seems to be working flawlessly, but the error
messages are produced, and the more intensively connection is used, the
more error messages are written to log files.

A day after upgrade, /var/log directory grew to 1.5 Gbytes and is still
growing, thanks to the 3 log files I've mentioned.

[Bug 189998] [NEW] Separate keyboard layout for each window in GNOME doesn't keep working after reboot

2008-02-07 Thread Evgeny nekr0z Kuznetsov
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

When enabled, separate keyboard layout for each window in System -
Settings - Keyboard - Layout works just OK. But after reboot, keyboard
layout becomes GNOME-wide again, not changing separately for each window
(as if the option was not selected). The option remains selected in
System - Settings - Keyboard - Layout, but doesn't take effect.

Disabling and enabling this option leads to correct behaviour again,

[Bug 86852] Re: Laptop does not wake up from S3 suspend mode

2008-01-23 Thread Evgeny nekr0z Kuznetsov
Thank you, Leann. There may be a point in switching to iwlwifi, but as
long as ipw3945 is preferred by default Ubuntu installation, and as long
as restricted-manager defaults to suggest installing it, I suppose the
bugs are worth reporting. This is not just my own profit I'm eager to
report and solve bugs, but for other fellow owners of that same
hardware, and some of those people may not be experienced enough, so I
believe we need those things that are supposed to just work actually
working. So you may be sure I will continually add more work to Bug
Squad :)

Those other issues I've mentioned are of course already reported as
separate bugs, and all critical ones are indeed already solved.

Thank you for supervising this bug. We all appreciate the enormous job
you all are doing to sort the bugs out. Thank you!

Lenovo 3000 N100 only has one battery, and the only battery has always
been detected properly, but the latest Hardy reports 2 batteries. The
second battery (BAT1) always shows the percentage of charge of the only
laptop battery at the moment the power cord was last plugged/unplugged.
Thus, if I charge the battery up till 100% and then unplug the power,
BAT0 shows the actual battery status, while BAT1 constantly shows 100%.
When the power cord is plugged back in, BAT0 starts charging and BAT1
jumps down to where the battery was on the moment of bringing the power
cord in and stays there.

This behaviour leads to wrong estimation of battery life in gnome-power-
manager and to wrong behaviour: for example, if 2% charge is actually
left, and BAT1 still shows 100%, gnome-power-manager thinks 12% of
summary charge is available, and doesn't put system to suspend-to-disk
mode as it is supposed to when there's less than 5% charge remaining.

[Bug 86852] Re: Laptop does not wake up from S3 suspend mode

2008-01-11 Thread Evgeny nekr0z Kuznetsov
After today's update of linux-restricted-modules in Hardy the wireless
functionality is available again. Even more pleasant is the fact that
the system resumes from STR just fine, WLAN functionality is available
after wake-up, and so is sound.

Right at this moment with latest Hardy updates it looks like the only
STR problem my laptop experiences is the lack of touchpad after resume.
Personally I am considering an upgrade of my production system as soon
as the touchpad issue is resolved.

And as long as the touchpad issue is not covered by this particular
bugreport, I suppose it's a good idea to change this bug's status. As of
now, the bug doesn't exist in Hardy, but still exists and is hardly
going to be solved in Feisty and Gutsy.

[Bug 86852] Re: Laptop does not wake up from S3 suspend mode

2008-01-10 Thread Evgeny nekr0z Kuznetsov
I duly apologize for not reporting in for two weeks — the New Year and
Christmas (which is January 7 in Russia) kicked me off a good deal.
Well, now I finally have a lot of new information here.

First of all, I should say that running the latest Hardy available at
this moment (that is, 2.6.24-3-generic 64bit kernel) I finally succeeded
to wake up from STR! There's no sound after resume (the corresponding
lines follow), but otherwise resuming went just grand.

 * Setting up ALSA...[ OK ]
FATAL: Module acpi_sbs not found.
FATAL: Module acpi_sbs not found.

I should mention that Hardy currently fails to load ipw3945 kernel
module, thus denying the WLAN functionality (see bug #181638 for
details). This can well be the WLAN that didn't allow the system to wake
up previously (but that surely is my own ill-based guess).

Anyway, I guess we suddenly have a serious progress on the matter, and
I'm eager to provide any information that can help solving STR problems
completely before Hardy hits the mirrors. To my great pity, I'm not that
good on debugging myself, so I need to be guided by someone who knows
what needs to be done. Leann?

2007-12-27 Thread Evgeny nekr0z Kuznetsov
I seriously doubt you can test this with a LiveCD, though it is possible
to make a LiveCD use swap partition (at least Knoppix does, so I think
there's a way to make Ubuntu do it). I didn't use LiveCD to test this
anyway.

I have installed Hardy Alpha2 onto a dedicated partition on my hard
drive for testing, and it did well. For those of you who feels like
going this way I would recommend NOT to use your working system's /home
as testing system's /home. Some applications are newer versions in
Hardy, they convert their files to newer formats, and then the
applications installed on your working system may not read the data
properly.

2007-12-08 Thread Evgeny nekr0z Kuznetsov
Diego, I'm sorry the link I've provided is unavailable. What I needed to
do to get things working was installing uswsusp package and make sure
the hal-system-power-hibernate-linux script runs s2disk command instead
of what it runs by default. That solves the fan spin-up problem.

Restoring the original hal-system-power-hibernate-linux script results
in fan not turning on after a wakeup from suspend-to-disk.

Since the original way to suspend-to-disk doesn't work properly and may
result in permanent damage through system overheat if one does not
notice silence from the fan I, with all respect, seriously doubt that
it's wise to close this bug. Until the original Ubuntu installation can
cause permanent physical damage to user's equipment, the bug should not
be closed, should it?

I suppose that a bug like this cannot be closed even if there's a
version of Ubuntu that works out of the box, until there's a still

[Bug 153038] ubuntu-desktop should not depend on evolution-webcal

2007-10-15 Thread Evgeny nekr0z Kuznetsov
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-desktop

I think it's obvious that ubuntu-desktop should recommend or suggest,
not depend on evolution-webcal. Currently, one can easily remove
Evolution (keeping evolution-data-server, which Ekiga depends on —
itself a bug as well?) without breaking ubuntu-desktop, but evolution-
webcal (which is totally useless without Evolution) should be kept.
Seems like nonsense to me.

[Bug 144946] Re: evolution crashed with SIGSEGV in rss_config_control_new()

2007-10-02 Thread Evgeny \nekr0z\ Kuznetsov
Well, I removed evolution-rss after Sebastien Bacher's remark, and
everything was working just OK.

Then, after your message, I did sudo aptitude install evolution-rss,
started Evolution and went to the menu: Edit - Settings. CRASH!

Then, I do sudo aptitude purge evolution-rss, start Evolution, go to
the menu: Edit - Settings, and have a settings window on the screen,
with no crashes.

Evolution, Liferea, Psi, Gaim etc.) open in new tabs as intended. But if
Firefox is not running, it doesn't start automatically.

[Bug 71919] Re: Ubuntu 6.10 hangs on GNOME logout

2007-08-08 Thread Evgeny \nekr0z\ Kuznetsov
I'm glad to report that the problem as I described it is gone in Feisty.
There still is a little problem about switching users: the second
logged-in user cannot use Synaptics touchpad as long as the first one
remains logged in. This problem is not too much hardware-specific, as
both my laptops (Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo M7400 and Lenovo 3000 N100)
suffer the same symptoms.

Should I file this as a new bug, or can we change this one?

[Bug 131130] Wireless LED driven by fsam7400 module goes off unexpectedly

2007-08-08 Thread Evgeny \nekr0z\ Kuznetsov
Public bug reported:

On a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo M7400 laptop the Wireless LED which is
responsible for showing WLAN connection status goes off unexpectedly
sometimes. The LED usually works good in discovery mode (blinking), but
switches off completely instead of turning on steady light upon
connection sometimes.

The LED itself, as well as switching WLAN on/off, is driven by fsam7400
module. Turning a wireless card off and back on (without reloading
fsam7400 module) usually helps to get the LED back on.

[Bug 36550] Re: [i855] Clone Mode makes external display very blurry/wobbly

2007-03-30 Thread Evgeny \nekr0z\ Kuznetsov
Looks like they have written a patch with a workaround about a year ago.
Couldn't that patch be included in Ubuntu? They are not likely to put it
in into upstream package for the reason unknown to me, and the problem
seems to be mission-critical for those using laptops for
presentations...

[Bug 91250] Re: Error in libgphoto2 udev rules

2007-03-12 Thread Evgeny \nekr0z\ Kuznetsov
I happen to use Edgy with backport repos enabled. I don't know whether
the package with wrong rules came from backports or not, but in any case
those rules have to be altered, at least for Edgy (because it is
actually Edgy that gets broken about this).

[Bug 91250] Error in libgphoto2 udev rules

2007-03-10 Thread Evgeny \nekr0z\ Kuznetsov
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libgphoto2-2

The file /etc/udev/rules.d/45-libgphoto2.rules says in line 3:

BUS!=usb*, GOTO=libgphoto2_rules_end

while recenly updated udev doesn't produce BUS properties in
corresponding event. Thus this line makes the whole file useless,
because BUS!=usb* is never true.

Something like

SUBSYSTEM!=usb_device, GOTO=libgphoto2_rules_end

instead would work.
