[Bug 69091] Re: Fonts look blurry if ~/.fonts.conf (even empty one) is present

2009-10-08 Thread Frank Siegert
Hi Todd,

I think that this is the wrong Launchpad bug report to link to (it is
assigned to fontconfig). You probably meant that one:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/kdebase/+bug/69085 where I have now added
your upstream bug watch.

To answer your question: Back when I reported it, this was still in KDE3
and the system settings module wasn't part of upstream KDE.

[Bug 69091] Re: Fonts look blurry if ~/.fonts.conf (even empty one) is present

2009-02-14 Thread Frank Siegert
Hi garyuu,

Sorry, if that wasn't clear, but this report mentioned Kubuntu's System
Settings, i.e. the KDE ones, but nonetheless, issue (2) is mainly
discussed in #69085. Opening System Settings -- Appearance -- Fonts
still creates a .fonts.conf, even in Kubuntu 8.10 (KDE 4.1). I don't
have the same hardware anymore, so I can't test, whether an empty
.fonts.conf makes fonts blurry anymore (and that's what this bug report
is mainly about). I only know that with my current hardware, fonts get
better, if I change the KDE created defaults in .fonts.conf from
rgba:none-rgb and hintstyle:hintmedium-hintfull.

Thanks,
Frank

[Bug 153119] Re: Capture quality problematic on Dell Latitude D630

2008-04-27 Thread Frank Siegert
Hi Mandy,

I would be really interested to find out how you got to the point of having the
mic working at all.
I seem to have exactly the same hardware as you in my Latitude D630:

00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio
Controller [8086:284b] (rev 02)
Subsystem: Dell Dell Latitude D630 [1028:01f9]
Control: I/O- Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr-
Stepping- SERR+ FastB2B-
Status: Cap+ 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B- ParErr- DEVSEL=fast TAbort- TAbort-
MAbort- SERR- PERR-
Latency: 0, Cache Line Size: 64 bytes
Interrupt: pin A routed to IRQ 21
Region 0: Memory at fe9fc000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: access denied

But with Gutsy (+ backported modules) as well as with Hardy I don't get
the microphone working at all. I noticed one small difference between
your and my amixer output, namely that I don't have this switch:

Simple mixer control 'Digital',0
  Capabilities: cvolume
Capture channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Capture 0 - 120
  Front Left: Capture 58 [48%] [-1.00dB]
  Front Right: Capture 58 [48%] [-1.00dB]

I think this is the crucial part of getting the microphone to work, so I
was wondering whether you did anything to make this appear?

Thanks,
Frank

[Bug 69085] Re: System Settings changes configuration files (makes fonts blurry) even without me applying any changes

2008-03-09 Thread Frank Siegert
I cannot test on the same laptop as before, and with my new laptop I don't see
blurry fonts anymore on 7.10.
But the system settings still write out .fonts.conf and .fonts/ even if I
don't change or apply anything (you should be able to confirm that?). I don't
know, whether this can still screw up somebody's setup. So if you are sure that
this does not hurt, and nobody else sees blurry fonts, go ahead and close this
bug.

[Bug 115609] Re: glxinfo crashes X with SiS661GX graphics

2007-07-09 Thread Frank Siegert
I noticed the same problem with the same graphics adapter (lspci
output). For me it stopped crashing when I added the dri module to the
section:

Section Module
  Load i2c
  Load bitmap
  Load ddc
  Load extmod
  Load freetype
  Load int10
  Load type1
  Load vbe
  Load glx
  Load dri
  load GLcore
  load v4l
EndSection

Section Device
identifier Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) SiS Default Card
  boardname SiS Real256E
  busid PCI:1:0:0
  driver sis
  screen 0
  vendorname SiS
EndSection

Section DRI
  Mode 0666
EndSection

Now glxinfo doesn't crash the X server anymore, but delivers this output:
$ glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
X Error of failed request: GLXBadContext
Major opcode of failed request: 143 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 5 (X_GLXMakeCurrent)
Serial number of failed request: 17
Current serial number in output stream: 17

Google Earth also won't crash anymore, but it runs (as before) very
jerky, almost unusable. I fear there is no solution for that problem
with my graphics adapter though, as it probably is not good enough to
support 3D acceleration.

[Bug 114032] valgrind finds Invalid read of size 4 in dlopen

2007-05-11 Thread Frank Siegert
Public bug reported:

Simple testcase in Ubuntu 7.04:

1. create main.cc:
#include dlfcn.h
int main(int argc, char *argv[])
{
  dlopen(libm.so,RTLD_LAZY|RTLD_GLOBAL);
}

2. compile main.cc: gcc -ldl main.cc
3. run valgrind on resulting a.out: valgrind --tool=memcheck ./a.out

I have seen the same in Ubuntu 6.06 with a more complex program, but not in
this simple test case. Debian 4.0 doesn't show this problem, neither do many
other distributions I have tested (e.g. Scientific Linux 4).
To check whether this is a valgrind problem, I compiled version 3.2.3, and
there the same problem is reported. If this is still a valgrind problem, please
reassign this bug report.

[Bug 50213] Re: misinterpreted chars with file:// links in iso8859-x encoded docs

2007-04-05 Thread Frank Siegert
Ah, that's interesting. With the dash, i.e. charset=iso-8859-15 it works
fine viewed directly (file://) but using Apache to serve it, only the
middle one works.

But actually it is not correct for Konqueror to have the file links with
_two_ slashes, but it expects three slashes just like Firefox (at least
version 3.5.5 does). And if you use three slashes (i.e. file:///müller),
you have the exactly same behaviour in Konqeror as in Firefox:

view local file: all three links work
view it through Apache: only the middle one works.

So you seem to be right, that it is the Apache header which somehow messes it
up.
So this doesn't seem to be a Konqueror bug, if a bug at all. Can you confirm,
Daniel?

[Bug 50213] Re: misinterpreted chars with file:// links in iso8859-x encoded docs

2007-04-05 Thread Frank Siegert
I have to take my statement back; I messed something up in my previous
comment.

When using the real file links, i.e. file:/// the encoding doesn't work in
Konqueror:
- from a local file all three lines show up scrambled as file:///MÃŒller (this
works fine in firefox)
- from apache server, only the middle one works (same problem in firefox)

Adding AddDefaultCharset iso-8859-15 made all three links bad in
Konqueror, while in Firefox nothing changed (i.e. only the middle one
works).

Can somebody confirm these, to make sure I didn't mess anything up
again?

2007-01-08 Thread Frank Siegert
Interestingly, there is a difference whether you serve the file via
Apache or view it directly from your hard drive:

Apache 2.0.55 + Konqueror 3.5.5 == the first two links work, while the third
doesn't (file://m??ller)
Directly + Konqueror 3.5.5 == Same as Titus mentions.

Can you confirm?

[Bug 69085] System Settings changes configuration files (makes fonts blurry) even without me applying any changes

2006-10-29 Thread Frank Siegert
Public bug reported:

When I open System Settings -- Appearance (only open, not even change
anything, and of course not apply!), it applies some changes to my user
settings, which make my fonts look blurry.

The first unwanted change is in .kde/share/config/kdeglobals (see attached
kdeglobals.diff).
The second change is the addition of a ~/.fonts directory and corresponding
~/.fonts.conf (see attached fonts.diff) and apparently running fc-cache.

Both these changes have to be undone (by editing kdeglobals accordingly,
removing .fonts.* and running fc-cache), then after logging out and back
in fonts are back to normal state (it is not enough, to only undo one of
these two changes). The difference between the states can be seen in the
two attached screenshots.

The same happens, when I open kcontrol and its Appearance Themes --
Fonts section. It also happens directly on the Edgy Live-CD, so it
should be fairly easy to test and confirm.

Summary:
1. (minor) System Settings should not make any changes when I don't hit Apply.
2. (major) It should not create a setting and .fonts.conf which makes fonts
look blurry. I have not exactly determined yet, why fonts look blurry if a
~/.fonts.conf exists (it doesn't even have to contain anything between
fontconfig and /fontconfig). This part of the bug might belong to another
program, e.g. fontconfig.

[Bug 69091] Fonts look blurry if ~/.fonts.conf (even empty one) is present

2006-10-29 Thread Frank Siegert
Public bug reported:

After a default Kubuntu installation, fonts look nicely anti-aliased and
still clear (see attachment clear-before-appearance.png). But if I add a
~/.fonts.conf (and log out and in), they get completely blurry (see
blurry-after-appearance.png), even if the ~/.fonts.conf is empty between
fontconfig /fontconfig. This caught me, because the Kubuntu system
settings created a ~/.fonts.conf when I viewed the Appearance section
(see the bug #69085).

If you think it is a mistake to have a quasi empty ~/.fonts.conf
present, or the one that Kubuntu System Settings writes out is wrong
(see linked bug: fonts.diff), then this bug against fontconfig may be
rejected. But I assume, that if one setting is not present in
~/.fonts.conf, it is taken from /etc/fonts/fonts.conf, so an empty
~/.fonts.conf should not hurt.

This bug seems to have been encountered by various users who have added
their information to #63403. Especially comment 20 explains this, and
the following comments also conclude, that maybe for mentioned case (3)
there should be a separate bug filed. Maybe my bug report fulfills this
need.

[Bug 68297] Re: [kubuntu] [edgy] ugly small fonts in all applications

2006-10-29 Thread Frank Siegert
What exactly do you mean by ugly? That those small fonts are not anti-
aliased? There is a setting in System Settings -- Appearance -- Fonts to
allow you to disable anti-aliasing for certain font sizes. Maybe it's
checked? By the way, whenever you change ~/.fonts* you have to run fc-
cache and/or log out and back in for the changed to take effect.

[Bug 37398] Re: kppp phone cost calculation error

2006-10-28 Thread Frank Siegert
I just tested this in Edgy's kppp (4:3.5.5-0ubuntu1) and it works fine.
I enabled phone cost calculation (you can do this in the edit dialog of
your ISP settings) and connected, no problems. It also shows connection
costs fine, during the connection duration as well as in the log
afterwards. Based on this and since no more information came from the
initial reporter, I am closing this bug as rejected. Please change to a
