[Bug 771633] Re: [Natty] Realtek ALC888 0x10ec0888 - mic not functional

2011-06-02 Thread GadiCohen
Is this definitely a Raltek codec issue? There have been a few reports
of no mic since upgrading to Natty... personally I'm also using hda-
intel but with the IDT 92HD73C1X5 codec. Besides for the title, this
bug report is still the most relevant bug report for me.

I eventually worked this out... gnome-volume-control (aka sound
preferences) doesn't set things up correctly. Running alsamixer from a
terminal is required (thanks to all those above who suggested this). My
inputs will probably be different from the Realtek users, but these are
the settings and my observations (from left to right, after pressing F4
for Capture settings):

Mic: 0   (makes no difference)
* Capture: 0 (volume makes no difference), MUST be set to capture (press space)
Capture 1: 0 (volume makes no difference), capture on this one makes no
difference
* Input source: MUST be set to Internal Mic 1
Input source 1: makes no difference
Internal mic: makes no difference
* Internal mic 1: affects mic volume

Capture (not Capture 1) and Internal Mic (not Capture 1) affect the
volume level shown in gnome-volume-control, but obviously have no impact
on the actual mic volume.

Of course, this is all with my laptop's built in mic... I haven't tried
plugging in an external mic. I've tried all the Input - Connector
Settings in gnome-volume-control but none of them set things up right
(all 3 options give no sound). Besides volume problems (of the mic)
when trying to use gnome-volume-control, the bigger issue is that when
selecting 'Internal Microphone' from the list, it sets 'Input Source' to
'Internal Mic' instead of 'Internal Mic 1'.

Hope this helps other people too.

[Bug 760814] Re: Compiz Very Slow and Choppy in Natty Classic

2011-05-24 Thread GadiCohen
I've done two things, one or both of which seems to have greatly
alleviated the problem (but not solved it completely).

The one was switching from Firefox to Chrome.
The other was enabling in ccsm: Utility - Detection
(Note, the latter ruined my desktop in that sesson, and I had to restart)

My big suspicion is Firefox... Chrome just seems more efficient at handling all
the open Windows.
My system has been running like this for a few days now, so the results are
constant.

On another perhaps related note, also since upgrading, the screen often isn't
redrawn properly.
It's not consistent... I can do the same thing a few times and sometimes it
will happen, sometimes it won't.
e.g. a new window will open, but be almost invisible until i change focus off
and back again,
Or, I'll close a window, and the window behind it won't be drawn until I focus
that window.
I can't find a separate bug report on this, will file eventually, but wondering
if it's related.

[Bug 760814] Re: Compiz Very Slow and Choppy in Natty Classic

2011-05-24 Thread GadiCohen
Sorry if people misunderstood me. I'm not saying Firefox was the
problem. I simply usually have a total of some 60 tabs open, and for me
the problem is worse the more windows I have open (but only after them
being open for a long time). If the problem is significantly less
severe with the same number of windows and tabs in Chrome vs Firefox,
then knowing how each handle such things, and which libraries they use,
could offer us some clues.

Seems to get worse as time goes on.
Disappears after closing all open windows.
Doesn't come back if immediately re-opening lots of windows, but does
eventually.

[Bug 453963] Re: Battery status unavailable after suspend / resume on some HP laptops

2010-01-19 Thread GadiCohen
The changes were accepted and should be included in 2.6.31.12 (still
unreleased).
From there it will take some time until it eventually makes it into
2.6.31-something for us in Ubuntu.
But eventually it will come down in the regular system updates. Yay!

Here's the thread from the kernelteam mailing list, for those interested:

Sure, np...

I never even noticed that discrepancy before, but yeah it does still
match... my system-product-name is also HP Pavilion dv4 Notebook PC
and the patch works great.

Feel free to 'confirm' that the bug affects you too on the bug report
:) And if the patch helps.

Thanks

 Quick question on this bug, if you don't mind.

 Regarding this part of the patch:

   .callback = init_set_sci_en_on_resume,
   .ident = Hewlett-Packard Pavilion dv4,
   .matches = {
   DMI_MATCH(DMI_SYS_VENDOR, Hewlett-Packard),
   DMI_MATCH(DMI_PRODUCT_NAME, HP Pavilion dv4),
   },
   },

 If dmidecode -s system-product-name returned: HP Pavillion dv4 Notebook PC
 Would the above code catch that? Or will dv4 Laptops with that product name -
 instead of HP Pavilion dv4 still be affected?

 Regards
 Iain

[Bug 453963] Re: Battery status unavailable after suspend / resume on some HP laptops

2010-01-10 Thread GadiCohen
More updates from me:

* Added support for HP-Compaq C700, which is also now in kernel 2.6.32.
* Patch + debs for kernel 2.6.31-17 at
http://turtle.wastelands.net/dragon/stuff/

I also submitted this latest patch directly to the kernel-team mailing
list, and hope it will be in the next release, or at least that we'll
get an official response from someone.

[Bug 453963] Re: Battery status unavailable after suspend / resume on some HP laptops

2009-12-11 Thread GadiCohen
Ok, I realize we already got a new kernel from the updates, and I
haven't checked the security implications of remaining on the current
kernel, but anyway, for those interested, here are the .deb files of the
last kernel with the above patch applied.

http://turtle.wastelands.net/dragon/stuff/

Note: you should really really never run kernels from strangers :)

Rather, here is info on how to build your own kernel:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Kernel/Compile

Btw - any word from the Kernel ACPI Team? The bug's been up for almost
2 months and we haven't had any official word yet.

Thanks.

2009-12-06 Thread GadiCohen
Ok nevermind guys; all the models mentioned above have already been
handled for the latest kernels.

So, attached is a patch against the latest karmic kernel, Ubuntu-2.6.31-16.51
(from git).
Note: this kernel already implements the patch for the HP G7000.
The patch adds the fix for the HP dv3, dv4 dv7 and Compaq CQ40.

[Bug 453963] Re: Battery status unavailable after suspend / resume on some HP laptops

2009-12-05 Thread GadiCohen
Guys to expediate some action on this issue please provide the exact
output of:

sudo dmidecode -s system-product-name

It should look something like this:

$ sudo dmidecode -s system-product-name
HP Pavilion dv4 Notebook PC

If your laptop isn't branded as an HP (I saw a Compaq user above),
please also give the output of sudo dmidecode -s system-manufacturer.

Then I'll comit to making a patch.

Also, FYI (last entry http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13449)

[Bug 453963] [NEW] Battery status unavailable after suspend / resume on some HP laptops

2009-10-17 Thread GadiCohen
Public bug reported:

This is actually already worked around (for some models) in
linux-2.6.31-git14, but a backport for the current Ubuntu kernels would
be great.

http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13745
http://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/35062/

The above patch is specifically for the Hewlett-Packard HP G7000
Notebook PC. In my case, the DMI_PRODUCT_NAME is HP Pavilion dv4
Notebook PC.

As per https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=490684, the follow models
are also affected:
* HP Pavilion dv7-1174ca
* HP Pavillion-dv7t 1000

I'd imagine it affects a number of other notebooks in HP Pavilions
range.
