As I was unable to usefully bisect the ubuntu kernel, I tried again with
the mainline kernels from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/
This gave a much clearer result:

I've tested a few more kernels by compiling the source packages linked
from the kernel bisection page. There is NO clear breakage that I'm
able to find, instead I see this:

Appologies for the delay in responding. Good news - I've been able to
boot linux 4.0-rc6 and the system is now stable.
I used the package linux-image-4.0.0-04rc6-generic for Vivid from
the from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.0-rc6-vivid/

Ok - looks like I spoke too soon. On shutting down after running all
day with no problems (largely unattended) the laptop crashed hard after
trying to shutdown.

I've tried the available pre-built packages but there are graps between the
binaries and upstream. The early 3.16.0 kernels work for me but with no
graphics acceleration, which I think is why they don't crash. It looks like
the later builds switch acceleration back on and

Attempted upgrading to (x)ubuntu 14.10 to see if this improved stability

I skipped recovery mode and installed the kernels directly from my functioning
3.13 system:
ii linux-image-3.17.1-031701-generic 3.17.1-031701.201410150735
ii linux-image-3.18.0-031800rc2-generic3.18.0-031800rc2.201410262035
I was unable to boot 3.18 due to
Latest (k)ubuntu installer checks for free space on /boot and aborts the
upgrade if there isn't enough space -- thanks!

If you were just out of disk space on /boot like I was -- and it looks like you
were, then the simplest way to recover is just to uninstall some old kernels as
you likely have a few installed, eg do:
$ dpkg -l|grep ii[[:space:]]*linux-image
and remove the oldest version, making sure that

Hi Sasa,
I think there are about 4 separate issues which are all mangled up now the logs
are visible:
1) KDE window manager died during the upgrade - not sure why. All window
controls and task bars disappeared during the upgrade
2) There was insufficient disk space to install the kernel image
PS this bug was raised through the click here to report bug system in
the installer...

I'm upgrading from to the latest Kubuntu release and the installer

I know what's happend - I've only got a ~100Mb boot partition and I've
got a couple of kernel images installed
I've been affected by this too:
Kubuntu 11.04 amd64
kmix 4:4.6.2-0ubuntu2
Comment #7 fixed it for me.
After doing rm ~/.kde/share/config/kmix* and cycling , was saved.

I'm using Kubuntu and this one got me too. I tried using kde system
settings to disable the proxy but it still didn't work.
I found a fix though: you have to run gnome-control-center and change
the proxy setting in there too. After this, I was able to fetch my
mail. Thanks to the posters

Alk thanks for your fix, I changed my mirror from ftp.iinet.com.au to
mirror.optus.net and now the upgrade proceeds.
How about if the installer could detect the problem was with the mirror
and display a less serious sounding error or prompt the user to switch
to a suggested mirror?

I had this problem today with 10.04. The root cause is that environment
variables such as http_proxy are not preserved when you use sudo. As a
workaround you can get a root shell with:
sudo bash
Then set http_proxy to what it should be:
export http_proxy=http://user:p...@stupidproxy.com:8080
