[Bug 391628] Re: Everything gets swapped out after resume from suspend using fglrx drivers

2011-06-12 Thread Graham Watson
I get this too, exactly as described in the initial bug report, with
Ubuntu 11.04 on a HP Pavillion DV6-1210SA with an ATI card and the fglrx
drivers. Is there any movement on getting it fixed please? It is
definitely my number 1 gripe with Ubuntu.

It definitely seems to be related to suspending whilst there is some
swap usage. Upon resume kswapd just goes mad and keeps moving things to
swap until it is 100% full. The only way I can stop it is by either
'sudo swapoff -a' or reboot.

Has anyone come up with a workaround if a fix isn't available yet (it
has been 2 years since the initial report, it seems it is being
avoided!)?

Regards
Graham

[Bug 774376] [NEW] Sound recording doesn't work until I manually restart pulseaudio and alsa

2011-04-30 Thread Graham Watson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

On booting my laptop (HP Pavilion DV6-1210SA), I cannot record sound or
use Skype until I manually restart pulseaudio and alsa with the
following commands:

sudo killall pulseaudio
sudo alsa force-reload
pulseaudio -D

After running these commands everything works fine.

[Bug 755847] [NEW] Headphone jack sense not working on HP Pavilion DV6-1210SA

2011-04-09 Thread Graham Watson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Hi

Apologies, I don't think this is a pulseaudio bug, but I'm not sure of a
better place to put sound issues. Please reassign it if you have more
knowledge than I do on the subject!

When I plug headphones in to the jack on my HP Pavilion DV6-1210SA
laptop, I get sound coming out of both the speakers and the headphones.
I've googled for 'Ubuntu jack sense' and it seems that people have been
having this problem for years with different laptops. The only way I can
get sound coming out of just the headphones is if I go to the sound
settings and change the Output Connector to 'Analogue Output' as opposed
to the default 'Analogue Speakers'. This is very inconvenient and I have
to change it back to 'Analogue Speakers when I want to use the speakers
again.

Graham

Hello,

This is interesting. I ran those commands and then loaded up Evolution,
only to find that the problem had gone away. I rebooted and the problem
has not returned.

The terminal output did not contain any information past the part that
said that it was starting the server.

[Bug 753047] [NEW] Ubuntu One address book not working in Evolution

2011-04-06 Thread Graham Watson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

There are similar bugs to this, but I can't see any that contain this
exact error message so I thought I should open a new report.

After installing Ubuntu One plus the extension for Evolution and
connecting it to my existing account, I open Evolution and click on
contacts-CouchDb-Ubuntu One. My online contacts fail to open and
instead I get an error box saying:

Unable to open address book

This address book cannot be opened. This either means that an incorrect
URI was entered, or the server is unreachable.

[Bug 721896] Re: kswapd0 100% cpu usage

2011-03-05 Thread Graham Watson
I get this bug too on my HP Pavilion DV6 laptop. For me it only ever
happens after a suspend to ram, and the symptoms are the same. My
physical ram is 50% full, but the swap space just fills up and churns
the hard disc forever. The system becomes barely usable (mouse pointer
even sticks for long lengths of time) even though the CPU is 25% in
use. sudo swapoff -a seems to solve the problem after a few minutes.

If some people are finding this happening without having used suspend-
to-ram, I would say we either have 2 separate bugs, or the suspend-to-
ram feature is at least a catalyst.

[Bug 721896] Re: kswapd0 100% cpu usage

2011-03-05 Thread Graham Watson
Hmm, just a thought, but what processes if any get triggered after a
suspend-to-ram is restored? I just noticed that after running sudo
swapoff -a, I now have dpkg running in a background process. Could it
actually be a bug in dpkg, meaning that some people always see it after
a suspend to ram but others see it whenever their scheduled auto-updates
trigger?

Are there any other programs that trigger after a suspend-to-ram?

[Bug 686716] [NEW] Digikam kills session when selecting MetaData in the settings

2010-12-07 Thread Graham Watson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: digikam

Using DigiKam 1.4.0 (2:1.4.0-0ubuntu1) in Ubuntu 10.10.

When I select 'Settings-Configure Digikam' and then select the
'Metadata' tab, instantly my screen goes black for a second or two and
then reappears at the gnome login prompt, with my user marked as 'logged
out'.

I don't think this has always happened, but I have been configuring
Digikam recently and I'm wondering if I have configured something else
that may have triggered this bug. I can attach my current digikam config
file if someone can tell me where to find it.

[Bug 467592] [NEW] curlftpfs io error with simple use case

2009-10-31 Thread Graham Watson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: curlftpfs

Under a simple use case, curlftpfs doesn't work.

Enter the following at a terminal:

mkdir test
sudo curlftpfs -o allow_other upload.ntlworld.com test
echo Hello test/test.txt

(note the curlftpfs command needs your logon details to be stored in
~/.netrc prior to issuing this command)

The output from the echo command is:

bash: echo: write error: Input/output error

Another use case that exhibits the same behaviour is:

mkdir .git
sudo curlftpfs -o allow_other upload.ntlworld.com .git
git init

Output of the git command is:

error: /home/graham/.git/description: close error: Input/output error
fatal: cannot copy /usr/share/git-core/templates/description to
/home/graham/.git/description

I'm guessing that both the echo and git use case are caused by the same
bug as they exhibit very similar behaviours. I read somewhere on the
internet that this is caused by the ftp file being flushed before the
release command, or something like that, but I can't find the article
any more sorry!

Re: [Bug 357290] Re: [i945] 1 fps in 3d apps like neverball with EXA (UXA fixes all but GoogleEarth)

2009-04-20 Thread Graham Watson
Hello,

Thanks for your reply. I will do as you ask as soon as possible however
my installation has completely died. When I updated to the latest kernel
release and rebooted I am left with a command-prompt that says something
about initramfs. I cannot proceed in to Gnome at all and have very
limited command-line knowledge on this OS.

I intend to download an installation disc to see if there is a repair
option on it and will also have a look on the forums for if anyone else
has experienced this before I will be able to respond to your request,
so please bear with me!

Regards
Graham

Re: [Bug 357290] Re: intel 945gm graphics card no 3d acceleration when running 3d games and apps

2009-04-09 Thread Graham Watson
Hi,

My report on the given wiki page:

Problem: /dev/dri/card0 is missing.
Problem: /dev/dri/card0 permissions are incorrect.

- The file exists on my install as follows:
crw-rw+ 1 root video 226, 0 2009-04-10 00:12 card0

gra...@graham-ubuntu:/dev/dri$ getfacl /dev/dri/card0

mask::rw-
other::---

Problem: Falling back to OpenGL software rendering

gra...@graham-ubuntu:/dev/dri$ glxinfo | grep render
get fences failed: -1
param: 6, val: 0
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) 945GM GEM 20090326 2009Q1 RC2
x86/MMX/SSE2

Problem: UXA gives better performance than EXA - why not move to UXA?

- This seems to have fixed the problem for me. Neverball and the
other 3d apps I use are now running silky smooth even with th desktop
effects set to full. Google Earth however is still maintaining 1fps.

Many thanks, and I'll keep you posted if I find any further problems
with this experimental driver.

If you have any ideas why Google Earth still likes 1fps I'd appreciate
it. It runs very smooth on my 'other' OS on the same PC (are we allowed
to say that?).

Regards
Graham

[Bug 354698] [NEW] intel 945gm graphics card no 3d acceleration

2009-04-03 Thread Graham Watson
Public bug reported:

Hi

On a Toshiba Satellite P100 laptop with integrated Intel 945GM graphics card, I
have no 3D acceleration on Ubuntu 9.04.
Before upgrading I had acceleration but only when
Preferences-Appearance-Visual Effects was set to 'None'. After the update I
cannot get 3D acceleration working even with this option set.

Regards
Graham
