I also noticed this behavior. For me, it appears systematically when I kill another session. My desktop is shared between multiple users (me and my children). [Bug 1173952] Re: Suspend and hibernate not working in 13.04/13.10 with alx module
Hi, I am affected by this bug. My Computer is an Asus UX52VS running an all fresh Ubuntu 13.10 Install. Running Kernel 3.11 (current 3.11.0-13), if a let the alx module loaded and go to suspend (closing my laptop) When opening up, i get back the X11 authentication, i can log in then the system totally hangs Ventirad begins to go in high load (so i guess because of an high CPU load) , sometimes i can access to the terminal (first console) and i can see the message repeated very fast: alx :04:00.0: invalid PHY speed/duplex: 0x The only solution is to hard power off the system to recover. I can reproduce that everytime, if a unload the alx module before suspending everthing works fine... I can see traces in kern.log: Nov 18 21:01:59 guilhem-UX52VS kernel: [ 70.009079] iwlwifi :03:00.0: L1 Disabled; Enabling L0S Nov 18 21:01:59 guilhem-UX52VS kernel: [ 70.015965] iwlwifi :03:00.0: Radio type=0x2-0x1-0x0 Nov 18 21:01:59 guilhem-UX52VS kernel: [ 70.105370] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready Nov 18 21:01:59 guilhem-UX52VS kernel: [ 70.108113] alx :04:00.0: irq 49 for MSI/MSI-X Nov 18 21:01:59 guilhem-UX52VS kernel: [ 70.108348] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready Nov 18 21:01:59 guilhem-UX52VS kernel: [ 70.109175] alx :04:00.0: invalid PHY speed/duplex: 0x Nov 18 21:01:59 guilhem-UX52VS kernel: [ 70.110913] alx :04:00.0: invalid PHY speed/duplex: 0x Nov 18 21:01:59 guilhem-UX52VS kernel: [ 70.112513] alx :04:00.0: invalid PHY speed/duplex: 0x Nov 18 21:01:59 guilhem-UX52VS kernel: [ 70.114340] alx :04:00.0: invalid PHY speed/duplex: 0x Nov 18 21:01:59 guilhem-UX52VS kernel: [ 70.115916] alx :04:00.0: invalid PHY speed/duplex: 0x Nov 18 21:01:59 guilhem-UX52VS kernel: [ 70.117484] alx :04:00.0: invalid PHY speed/duplex: 0x The system hanged when began the message about alx... Is there any solution or workaround ? I was expecting to test with kernel 3.12 if the same bug was existing, unfortunately under kernel 3.12 for me th situation is even worst and suspend simply does not work (alx module loaded or unloaded) all i get a black screen but this it an other story -:-) Blacklisting the alx module resolves the issue as far as you don't need any wired connection, but this is a dirty workaround not a solution... [Bug 1252483] [NEW] Suspend fails with kernel 3.12 with system totally hanged
Public bug reported: Hi, Running a fresh install of Saucy, i noticed that with Kernel 3.12 suspend does not work anymore. Kernel: 3.12.0-031200rc7-generic Also tried with same result. (i haven't tried previous RC) My computer is an Asus UX52VS running Intel I7. Going to sleep seems to work with no issue, when waking up all i get is black screen, can't go in console the system is totally hanged. Ventirad becomes to go in high activity like if there were an high CPU load. Can't get anything in logs related to time i tested to wake up... Under the same installation and running Kernel 3.11, Suspend works perfectly (as far as i disable the alx module which is an another bug i'm facing) Thanks! ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1252483 Title: Suspend fails with kernel 3.12 with system totally hanged To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1252483/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1252462] Re: CPU turbo mode frequency issue with Kernel 3.11 under Saucy 13.10 (Intel I7)
CPUs which run at the same hardware frequency: 3 CPUs which need to have their frequency coordinated by software: 3 maximum transition latency: 0.97 ms. hardware limits: 800 MHz - 3.10 GHz available cpufreq governors: performance, powersave current policy: frequency should be within 800 MHz and 3.10 GHz. The governor powersave may decide which speed to use within this range. current CPU frequency is 2.90 GHz (asserted by call to hardware). As you can see the 2 kernels does not seem to use the same driver, intel_pstate for Kernel 3.12 and acpi-cpufreq for Kernel 3.11. Reported speed are correct for Kernel 3.12 and the system works much better and more fluent, i can really feal the difference. Frequency tools report a good frequency, going up to 3 Ghz under high CPU Load. (under Kernel 3.12 i can't use turbostat, gives me an error : turbostat not found for kernel 3.12.0-031200rc7 You may need to install linux-tools-3.12.0-031200rc7-generic ) So what does that mean ? Is a 3.11 kernel unable to manage correctly that kind of processor ? Anything else to do to correct that ? Many people have that kind of modern processor in recent laptops, i guess many shall be interested in... [Bug 1239861] [NEW] Basic OpenGL+X11 build on a 32 bits system craches X11 when ruing on a 64 bits system
Public bug reported: A customer of us has report that our application www.caniviz.com crashes when working on a Ubunty 12.05 LTS machine... After investigation, we found that every OpenGL applications build in 32 bits seems to crash X11 when running on a 64 bits host; crashing X11 means that the session of the user that has run the opengl application is killed. The next program can be found at http://www.opengl.org/wiki/Tutorial:_OpenGL_3.0_Context_Creation_(GLX). The build instructions are also in the link... We have tries with Ubuntu 13.04 32 and 64bits and 12.05 32 and 64bits: every time the 32 bits application is run in a 64 bits, there is the crash... @Khaos: Hi, a) yes i'm using bumblebee/optirun with standard config, using virtualgl, installed as follows: sudo apt-get install bumblebee virtualgl As i far as i understood with such hardware, the screen is managed directly by the intel hardware (the nvidia does not have direct access to it) I haven't tried to use other nvidia driver, or even the last beta proprietary driver which always activates the nvidia GPU b) i will check and revert, others hotkeys like sound (with OSD notification), suspend works, haven't yet tried the wireless on/off @Dimitri: Hi, mine is a KV55VD-SX613H, i have installed last Bios version (Version 411, 2013.04.03) before any test i will recheck using this workaround and try to found useful traces. [Bug 1100825] Re: Brightness Hotkeys FN (F5, F6) not working in Asus K55VD (A55VD-SX406H)
Hi, @Kahos: No, the wifi On/Off does not work, neither in boths acpi config To all, I re-tried using the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=splash quiet acpi_osi='!Windows 2012' . Not exactly the same issue (this time ^^): - OSD notification ok - No waiting time between hotkeys pressure BUT - Only 3 nivels of brightness available, one said to be at the minimum, one almost 30% and one almost 70% - Wifi On/Off does not work In this config i getin /sys/class # ls -ltr */brightness -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4096 mai3 17:39 acpi_video0/brightness -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4096 mai3 17:47 intel_backlight/brightness Brightness range in acpi_video0 is from 0 to 10, running an echo to manage brightness works Brightness range in intel_backlight is from 0 to 4882, running echo also works Asus modules are being automatically loaded at boot time: # lsmod | grep asus asus_nb_wmi12854 0 asus_wmi 24213 1 asus_nb_wmi sparse_keymap 13890 1 asus_wmi wmi19070 2 mxm_wmi,asus_wmi video 19390 2 i915,asus_wmi I'm wondering if the problem could not be related to the acpi script that manages the brightness range, when not using this grub line, the normal brightness range is from 0 to 100. If the script uses a much bigger value than 1 for change unit (for minus and plus), this could explain this behavior. There is script: /etc/acpi/asus-keyboard-backlight.sh But it contains: KEYS_DIR=/sys/class/leds/asus\:\:kbd_backlight So i don't think this being used by the system, does anyone knows which script takes this in charge ? Will run into some tests with script, using the command acpi_listen you get the related acpi even when hotkeys are being pressed. I guess as much for the wireless than for the brightness, something could be corrected here... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1100825 Title: Brightness Hotkeys FN (F5,F6) not working in Asus K55VD (A55VD-SX406H) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1100825/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1100825] Re: Brightness Hotkeys FN (F5, F6) not working in Asus K55VD (A55VD-SX406H)
Ok, i got it to work :-) Using acpi_listen, my brightness hotkeys give me (down and up): video LCDD 0087 video LCDD 0086 I edited and adapted: cat /etc/acpi/events/asus-keyboard-backlight-down # /etc/acpi/events/asus-keyboard-backlight-down # This is called when the user presses the key brightness # down button and calls /etc/acpi/asus-keyboard-backlight.sh for # further processing. event=video LCDD 0087 action=/etc/acpi/asus-keyboard-backlight.sh down cat /etc/acpi/events/asus-keyboard-backlight-up # /etc/acpi/events/asus-keyboard-backlight-up # This is called when the user presses the key brightness # up button and calls /etc/acpi/asus-keyboard-backlight.sh for # further processing. event=video LCDD 0086 action=/etc/acpi/asus-keyboard-backlight.sh up Note: I tested with the complete line given by acpi_listen but did not work, then re-tested without the last 0 series and it worked. I edited and adapted: /etc/acpi/asus-keyboard-backlight.sh And changed the KEYS_DIR to match the acpi_video0: # this directory is a symlink on my machine: KEYS_DIR=/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0 The default dir was pointing to a led dir, which does not exist in my case, an other exists but running echo does not work. Finally, i rebooted, both OSD Notification and hotkeys works :-) no need to wait, works good Also, i was wrong, the Wireless On/Off switch works good, but there is no OSD notification -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1100825 Title: Brightness Hotkeys FN (F5,F6) not working in Asus K55VD (A55VD-SX406H) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1100825/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1100825] Re: Brightness Hotkeys FN (F5, F6) not working in Asus K55VD (A55VD-SX406H)
Hi all, I have an Asus K55VD, running Ubuntu 13.04 (gnome shell version) and had the same issue with controling brightness using hotkeys. The only working workaround is to add acpi_osi= next to the default grub line in /etc/default/grub. In this case, under /sys/class i see: /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight Using echo n brightness can manage screen brightness with success. An other workaround almost works: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AsusZenbookPrime#Ubuntu_13.04 Using: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=splash quiet acpi_osi='!Windows 2012' At session startup, the screen in middle brightness. Using hotkeys works with Ubuntu notification working, but every hotkeys press required a few seconds to work, if you want to go from minimum to maximum a very very long time would be required... So not usable, still the best workaround is using acpi_osi= I have also tried various settings like: acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=legacy For both cased, hotkeys does not work, i have tried using a custom script in /etc/acpi with associated events (got them using acpi_listen) but did not worked. Using =acpi_osi works good, but what could explain that the gnome daemon does not recognize hotkeys when pressed ? [Bug 1046391] Re: please package newer upstream release of parted
sorry but the commit who activate the 1M alignment is this one : http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/parted.git/commit/?id=c749046a54d983f74f8156c0aea71b0995b9477d And I don't see anything like this in source and patches (maybe I'm wrong, but it's hidden) To be more precise, I do my own package (parted 3.1, a future ppa will come) and I _really_ see different when use with ubuntu-vm-builder : In the current case, I have a disk with 4k block, my partition is 512 align and my VM is 512 align! (you see the problem I hope) Here is for example a (bad) workaround : http://bazaar.launchpad.net /~guilhem-fr/vmbuilder/parted/revision/484 I understand the problem with 2 different versions. But when you see the parted changelog, it's unbelievable to keep an old / patchy version of somethings so central in a Linux distribution (and to see fedora with 3.1 and debian with 2.3 while it's a debian project...) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1046391 Title: please package newer upstream release of parted To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/parted/+bug/1046391/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
