[Bug 1912211] Re: Scrolling of pages in "Show Application"

2021-01-20 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
I reproduced the issue, i.e. not being able to scroll beyond the first
application window in "Show Applications", by installing the 20.04.1 ISO
in a VirtualBox VM. I accomplished the installation without downloading
upgraded packages, so it was a true vanilla Ubuntu 20.04.1 installation.

Then I updated all packages and rebooted, but the issue was still there.

Then I uninstalled gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock and rebooted, and
now the "Show Applications" scrolling worked as expected.

Finally I reinstalled gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock and rebooted,
and the issue was back.

So it seems to be something with gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock. Btw,
I used an external USB connected mouse.

Shouldn't the importance of this bug be raised? After all it's about a
core feature of the Ubuntu desktop.

Maybe worth adding:

For the case somebody really would want to keep playing with the last
Flash plugins for some reason, both the NPAPI and PPAPI ones (for amd64
as well as i386) are available in this adobe-flashplugin tarball:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+archive/partner/+sourcefiles/adobe-
flashplugin/1:20201208.1-0ubuntu0.20.10.1/adobe-

and probably at a lot of other places on internet.

[Bug 1911463] Re: Can no longer successfully download Flash during postinst

2021-01-19 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
@Łukasz: Flash is dead since the year end. Adobe and the big browser
vendors have coordinated its EOL.

Possibly - I haven't bothered to investigate it that deep - there is a
use case where people want to keep the latest Flash plugin, do some
special configuration for the purpose, and use it locally together with
some obsolete browser version. But even if such a use case exists, I
don't think we should let it block this step. I'd say that there is no
longer any reason for us to support any kind of Flash. Think of removing
existing plugins as a security measure.

Let me add that the principal Flash package on Ubuntu was adobe-
flashplugin, provided via Canonical partner. That package was recently
killed in the same manner. If you like you can check with Chris Coulson
about his considerations.

Killing pepperflashplugin-nonfree is also an OEM request (bug #1871471).

[Bug 1911463] Re: Can no longer successfully download Flash during postinst

2021-01-16 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
To the sponsor:

I'm asking for help with:

* A forced sync of pepperflashplugin-nonfree from unstable to hirsute

* Uploads of the SRUs as proposed in this PPA:

  https://launchpad.net/~gunnarhj/+archive/ubuntu/pepperflashplugin-
nonfree

  (please use -v1.8.7 when building)

** Description changed:

  [Impact]

Since Adobe Flash Player is officially no longer available or end of
life, they seem to have made a redirect to a link, that
pepperflashplugin-nonfree likely uses for obtaining Flash, to the 'End
of Life' page of the Flash website. This means that when installing
pepperflashplugin-nonfree from now on it'll keep trying to download the
HTML file for the end-of-life page.

The proposed uploads are plain no-change SRU backports of the dummy
package in hirsute sync'ed from Debian. With that we prevent more users
from stalling their package system by trying to install or update
  pepperflash.

  [Test Case]

  * Install pepperflashplugin-nonfree from
- {groovy,focal,bionic,xenial}-proposed
+   {groovy,focal,bionic,xenial}-proposed

  * Confirm that it installs successfully without causing any issues
- with the package system.
+   with the package system.

- * Run the update-pepperflashplugin-nonfree command and see the EOL
- notice.
+ * Run the "update-pepperflashplugin-nonfree --install" command and
+ see the EOL notice.

  [Where problems could occur]

We replace an obsolete package which creates issues with a dummy. The
upgrade removes a config file in /etc, and the download and install
functionality is not present in the new version. TBH I can't think of
  anything special.

  [Other Info]

  Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS
  Newly installed pepperflashplugin-nonfree - 1.8.6ubuntu1

Someone should probably update this package to, instead of trying in
vain to download Flash, show a notice saying Flash has reached end-of-
life and so this package is no longer available. Packages like Opera
from the official Opera repository still depend on this package,
  currently.

That happens to me if the search field is not focused when you start
typing, which it seems to not be initially by default. If I first click
the search field, also the first letter can be typed using a dead key.

A transition of pepperflashplugin-nonfree to a dummy package will happen
via bug #1911463. Debian will keep the dummy in Bullseye, and drop it
from the archive only in bookworm. Probably it's preferable also for us

[Bug 1875062] Re: [20.04] Keyboard layout not enabled immediately during installation when typing username/password

2021-01-13 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Unfortunately this bug seems to have resurrected in hirsute. It's
actually even worse than before: When testing in a VM it uses *always*
the English (US) keyboard layout in the window for entering name and
password, irrespective of my previous choices of display language and
keyboard layout.

Probably I should have submitted a new bug, but since a few users who
were attentive to the issue previously are subscribed to this one, it
would be great if others could test the latest hirsute build in this
respect. Maybe it's just me...

[Bug 1909665] Re: [MIR] ibus-libpinyin dependencies

It may be worth mentioning that libopencc-doc is only a "Suggests" in
the opencc package.

The only binaries which need to be promoted to main due to ibus-
libpinyin are:

libopencc1.1
libopencc-data

Understood, Christian, and even if it's more convenient to sync, the delta due
to lua5.3 instead of 5.4 (for now) is trivial and doesn't affect usability
AFAIK.

Is there anything you expect me to do wrt lua? If not, I suppose the
status of that bug task should be changed to something else but
"Incomplete".

opencc

Thanks for your review, Didier! I'm thinking I can file an upstream bug report
about the build warnings and look into the symbol tracking thing (need to read
up on the latter topic).

As regards remote images I see two of those right before the
"Introduction" header and one right after. If browsing off line those
images are replaced with text labels. Do you think that would motivate a
Debian patch to fix?

@Sebastien: Neither I am able to tell exactly which functionally opencc
adds to ibus-libpinyin. Don't input traditional and simplified Chinese
simultaneously often. :) If you like, I can ask somebody in the IME team
to clarify.

[Bug 1907914] Re: default locale when selecting english(US) and belgian timezone is incorrect

2021-01-10 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
I have played with the latest daily build in a VM, pretending to install
from Brussels, and confirmed that the change is effective in accordance
with the intentions.

So when installing in English, the nl_BE.UTF-8 locale is now set for
regional formats, while when installing in French the formats locale is
still set to fr_BE.UTF-8.

[Bug 1910692] Re: check-language-support wants to install wrong locale packages

2021-01-08 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
I think it works as expected. If you run check-language-support without
options, it lists uninstalled language support for all languages on the
system, which approximately is the output of this command:

ls /usr/share/locale-langpack

So if you have Russian as display language, and want to install Russian
language support only, this command should do it:

sudo apt install $(check-language-support -l ru)

Please let me know if that explains it.

Chris Coulson has just done that for adobe-flashplugin. So now we
provide dummies in hirsute, all the supported releases, and also trusty
and precise.

Also flashplugin-installer is now a dummie in focal, bionic and xenial.

Please consider to do the same for at least pepperflashplugin-nonfree
instead of just dropping it from hirsute.

[Bug 1909665] [NEW] [MIR] ibus-libpinyin dependencies

2020-12-30 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Public bug reported:

Please include these packages in Ubuntu's component main:

* lua5.4
* opencc

ibus-libpinyin provides the default method for inputting simplified
Chinese, and is shipped with the desktop ISO. The latest Debian version
of ibus-libpinyin couldn't migrate in hirsute, though, since it depends
on liblua5.4-0 and libopencc1.1 which are both in universe.

For now I built ibus-libpinyin in Ubuntu with lua5.3 and without opencc
support. However, it would be preferable to be able to sync the fully
featured package from Debian.

lua5.2 and lua5.3 are already in main. opencc is a library for
converting characters between traditional Chinese and simplified
Chinese, and has been in main previously (trusty).

As regards bug subscribing, I assume that ~ubuntu-server is a suitable
candidate for lua5.4 and that ~desktop-packages should be subscribed to
opencc bugs.

[Bug 1909347] Re: Keyboard layout used in the second place breaks keymap

2020-12-27 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
I have Ubuntu MATE on a VM and could reproduce your first issue there,
i.e. it's present only when Neo 2 is not first in the list of keyboard
layouts.

Consequently this is probably an xkeyboard-config issue and not specific
to gnome-control-center. And the issue is reasonably upstream in nature.

I found this open upstream issue regarding Neo 2:

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xkeyboard-config/xkeyboard-

Can't tell if it's related to your observations. If not I would
recommend you to file a new issue upstream. If you do, please post a

I disabled NumLock, and then it didn't behave as weirdly as it did on my
first try. On the contrary I was able to reproduce your first issue.

But it would still be valuable to know if the issues are present also on

[Bug 1909347] Re: Keyboard layout used in the second place breaks keymap

2020-12-27 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Thanks for your report.

German (Neo 2) is a very special keyboard layout, and when I add it to
my list of input sources it breaks a few things on my other layouts, and
as regards Neo 2 I don't have a clue how to make sense of it.

Have you tried to use Neo 2 on other desktop environments but
Ubuntu/GNOME? If you have, and see similar issues there, it's probably
not related to gnome-control-center, and then you may want to report
your findings upstream:

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xkeyboard-config/xkeyboard-
config/-/issues

OTOH, if the unexpected behavior is only seen on Ubuntu/GNOME, this bug
report is possibly a reasonable starting point.

3.38.1-1ubuntu1.1. Anyway, it still works with gnome-shell

[Bug 1908928] Re: locales 2.27-3ubuntu1.4 enabled random locales

2020-12-21 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Given the contents of /etc/locale.gen, generating those locales when
updating the locales package (or e.g. running "sudo locale-gen") is
expected behavior. Are you claiming that Ubuntu somehow uncommented
those locales in /etc/locale.gen without your knowledge?

[Bug 1907914] Re: default locale when selecting english(US) and belgian timezone is incorrect

2020-12-12 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Thanks for your report!

#1 would be a more long-term solution. For that you would need to
propose en_BE to be created and convince the upstream glibc maintainers
that it's needed.

https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/enter_bug.cgi?product=glibc;component=localedata

#2 would be a non-trivial change to the installer, and it would add an
extra step to the installation, even if it wouldn't be useful for most
users.

For now I think #3 is what's doable. I submitted a merge proposal which
would do that.

2020-12-11 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
For the record we had an IRC conversation here:

https://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2020/12/11/%23launchpad.html

I think it makes more sense to open a new apt bug. Not quite sure at the
moment what the issue is, though...

As said on IRC, I'll do some tests later. If you already know what a
proper bug summary would be, please go ahead and create a new bug.

[Bug 1161743] Re: Typos in russian description for package libxml2

2020-12-11 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
@Julian: Today, after the latest apt update, it behaves differently
compared to what I wrote in comment #8 and #10. Now I'm not able to even
work around the issue to make apt-cache use the Swedish description.

Anyway, I attached a file with some commands to demonstrate the issue.

[Bug 1161743] Re: Typos in russian description for package libxml2

2020-12-10 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Right, the latest comments are unrelated to the original issue.

I renamed the ubuntu_dists_groovy-updates_main_i18n file, and then apt
found the Swedish translations from ubuntu_dists_groovy_main_i18n. So,
based on how apt works, -updates files need to be present for all
languages as long as the Translation-en -updates file is there.

The issue seems to be present on all the supported releases (and trusty
and precise too...).

[Bug 1161743] Re: Typos in russian description for package libxml2

2020-12-10 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
@vofka: Good catch. I played with an equivalent file on groovy for
Swedish, and it looks like apt (apt-cache) only looks for groovy-
updates_*_i18n files while ignoring the groovy_*_i18n ones. And no
localized groovy-updates_*_i18n files are present; only English files
are:

/var/lib/apt/lists$ ls -1 *ubuntu_dists_groovy-updates_*_i18n*
archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_groovy-updates_main_i18n_Translation-en
archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_groovy-updates_multiverse_i18n_Translation-en
archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_groovy-updates_restricted_i18n_Translation-en
archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_groovy-updates_universe_i18n_Translation-en

I don't know how this is supposed to work exactly.

@Sebastien: Can you shed some light on it?

[Bug 1906887] [NEW] 3rd level key options hidden in Tweaks if show-all-sources is true

2020-12-04 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

* Enable show-all-sources

  gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.input-sources show-all-sources 'true'

* Open Tweaks and navigate to Keyboard & Mouse ->
Additional Layout Options -> Key to choose the 3rd level

* Find that only two odd options are shown

I would have expected the lv3:* options to be shown, i.e.:

  grep lv3 /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/base.lst

If I downgrade xkb-data to 2.26-2ubuntu4, the issue is not present. So
the issue seems to be caused by some kind of incompatibility between
gnome-tweaks and xkb-data 2.29-2.

[Bug 1754804] Re: "fonts-ubuntu" package is marked as non-free

2020-11-19 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
fonts-ubuntu is shipped by default on Ubuntu systems. It has significant
reverse dependencies and cannot be uninstalled easily. Debian considers
fonts-ubuntu to be “non-free” while Canonical disagrees.

Recently I have seen two Ask Ubuntu questions where users have run vrms,
found fonts-ubuntu to be non-free, and tried to uninstall the package:

* https://askubuntu.com/q/1292336

* https://askubuntu.com/q/1292751

This situation is unfortunate, and the explanation is that the control
file states "non-free". Given the difference in opinion, the control
file should not state "non-free" when building for Ubuntu.

[Bug 1903574] Re: isenkram-lookup crashed with SIGSEGV in g_type_check_instance_cast()

2020-11-13 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
** Description changed:

  [Impact]

An attempt to run the isenkram-lookup command from the isenkram-cli
- package results in a segfault/crash. The proposed appstream upload fixes
- the issue.
+ package results in a segfault/crash. The proposed appstream upload in
+ fixes the
+ issue.

  [Test case]

  1. Install the isenkram package

  2. Run the isenkram-lookup command

  -> Find that it segfaults

  3. Install the packages built by the appstream source
-package from groovy-proposed
+    package from groovy-proposed

-> Find that the command succeeds and possibly lists a few
-suggested packages.
+    suggested packages.

  [Where problems could occur]

TBH this fix is far above my head. Only code comments are changed, i.e.
some occurrences of "full" are replaced with "container", but it still
  has proved to be it.

The reasoning in the commit message sounds plausible:

  https://github.com/ximion/appstream/commit/b52858bf

  [Original description]

I just run the isenkram-lookup command.

The crash may be related to this autopkgtest failure (which current
  blocks migration of gtk+3.0):

https://objectstorage.prodstack4-5.canonical.com/v1/AUTH_77e2ada1e7a84929a74ba3b87153c0ac
  /autopkgtest-
  hirsute/hirsute/amd64/i/isenkram/20201108_141822_ee8c4@/log.gz

This is the script which fails:

  https://salsa.debian.org/debian/isenkram/-/blob/master/debian/tests
  /test-command-line

and it includes the isenkram-lookup command.
