I tried the same thing on my Maverick system, using the tex-code from the
webside, and then issuing
$ pdflatex --shell-escape foo.tex
and it worked like a charm.
(latex to dvi also worked)

I have tested on a freshly updated Lucid laptop. Closing the lid makes
the machine suspend, and subsequently opening the lid, the machine
resumes from suspend and no password has to be typed. Excellent.

No GUI method to disable screen lock on lid close event
I seem to have the same problem with DS2490 (usb) on two 64-bit systems
running 10.04, while it is working on a 32-bit netbook running 10.04.
The two 64-bit systems have the same motherboard, Asus M3N78-EM.

Bug confirmed for Lucid here as well. kdm workaround works. Immediate
symptoms are changed in that you now get a message that Ubuntu is
booting in low resolution instead of an all black screen (but I cannot
get into a desktop nevertheless).

Please disregard my previous post. I was bit by

and were unknowingly running a karmic kernel in my lucid installation. Looks
much better now with 2.6.32.

I upgraded to Lucid Lynx to see if it helped as it has for others here.
It did not, it made things worse. I tried switching over to wicd (it
helped on 9.10), but even that is hopeless now. I have 10 seconds of
connectivity before I loose the connection for a minute or two.

Funny thing, when I reinstalled 64-bit to circumvent this bug, the LCD
display refuses to work, though it worked in 9.10 32-bit (when IR remote
did not work). I don't know if these are related.

I have tried this with both 32-bit and 64-bit Ubuntu 9.10 (same
computer), and the problem only exist for 32-bit. Lirc 0.8.6.0ubuntu2.

gdm chrashes on boot,
I installed kubuntu-desktop, and then using kdm, I do not have the same
issues, which should mean this is not a bug in the xorg-server/nvidia-
driver. Switching back to gdm using 'dpkg-reconfigure gdm' gets the
black screen back, switching to kdm again, and then it works fine.
