[Bug 2046315] Re: panel flickering after the i915.psr2 is enabled

2024-04-16 Thread Hui Wang
** Description changed:

+ SRU verificaton for Noble and oem-6.8-noble:
+
+ [Impact]
+ In Dell oem project, we found the graphic is flickering on some
+ machines, finally we narrowed down the issue on (some specific panels +
+ i915.psr2 enabled), and the issue was reported to Intel, Intel fixed
+ the issue in the most recent mainline kernel. Here backporting the
+ patches to Noble kernel.
+
+ It is hard to backport the patches to mantic and oem-6.5, so we wrote
+ a workaround patch to disable the psr2 for those pannels in the oem-6.5.
+
+ https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/intel/-/issues/9739
+
+ [Fix]
+ cherry-pick 8 patches from mainline kernel
+
+ [Test]
+ I applied the patches to Noble kernel and built a testing kernel, and
+ Dell validated the testing kernel on those machines, the graphic
+ didn't flicker anymore.
+
+ I installed the testing kernel on some machines with Intel 13th, 12th
+ 11th and 10th gen cpu, the grahic worked well too.
+
+ [Where problems could occur]
+ This patchset changes the fast wake settings for some gpu, it is
+ possible to make the graphic flicker, but this possibility is very
+ low, since the patchset comes from mainline kernel and we validated
+ the patchset on different gens of Intel cpus.
+
+ ===
+
  BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2046315

  [Impact]
On serveral Dell laptops, the screen often displays garbage or the screen is
flicking

This PR is just a workaround, the upstream bug is here:
  https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/intel/-/issues/9739#note_2187863

After the upstream fix this bug with a real fix, I will revert the
workaround and backport the real fix to Noble and Jammy oem-kernel.

  [Fix]
There is no real fix so far, ODM recommends to use a workaround to disable
PSR2, this is a temp solution, after we get the real fix, we could revert the
temp workaround.

  [Test case]

booting with the patched kernel, If the pannel's edid is in the qurik
list, the PSR2 will be disabled (checking
/sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_edp_psr_status; if the pannel's edid is not
in the quirk list, the graphic driver will work as before.

  [Where problems could occur]
It is possible that the temp solution couldn't work, then the screen will
still show garbage and the screen is flicking, another possible regression is
the screen has no problem before, but after running patched kernel, the PSR2 is
disabled and the system cost more power, but this possibility is very low, I
tested the patched on some dell machines, all worked well.

commit 6a9156867a5ce4ded2967ca46b0a8d755d9a1ee7
Author: Jiawei Wang
Date: Wed Mar 13 09:58:53 2024 +0800

ASoC: amd: yc: Revert "add new YC platform variant (0x63) support"

BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2060531

commit 37bee1855d0e3b6dbeb8de71895f6f68cad137be upstream.

This reverts commit 316a784839b21b122e1761cdca54677bb19a47fa,
that enabled Yellow Carp (YC) driver for PCI revision id 0x63.

Mukunda Vijendar [1] points out that revision 0x63 is Pink
Sardine platform, not Yellow Carp. The YC driver should not
be enabled for this platform. This patch prevents the YC
driver from being incorrectly enabled.

[Bug 2060904] Re: Fix the RTL8852CE BT FW Crash based on SER false alarm

2024-04-11 Thread Hui Wang
** Description changed:

- This bug is for tracking purpose
+ This SRU template is for linux-firmware:
+
+ BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2060904
+
+ [Impact]
+
+ On a Dell laptop, let it connect to a WiFi router, connect a BT
+ device, then disconnect it, connect the bt device again, we expect
+ the device could be connected successfully, but it couldn't and
+ the BT firmeware crashed.
+
+ [Fix]
+
+ Need to upgrade the firmware for RTL8852CE and cherry-pick 2 kernel
+ patches, here we send the MR for firmware first. And it is backward
+ compatible, the upgraded firmware could work with kernel without
+ those 2 patches as well as before.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ With the upgraded firmware + kernel without the 2 kernel patches,
+ the wifi and bt could work as well / bad as before.
+
+ With the upgraded firmware + kernel with the 2 kernel patches, bt
+ firmware will not crash anymore and bt could connect / disconnect
+ many many bt devices.
+
+ [Where problems could occur]
+
+ This MR comes from upstream commit, it has low possibility to
+ introduce regression. If the bt or wifi on this laptop couldn't
+ work as well as before, it is possible that this MR introduces
+ regression. According to our test, the wifi and bt could work well
+ with upgraded firmware.

[Bug 2051570] Re: [Vostro 3400, Cirrus Logic CS8409/CS42L42, Speaker, Internal] Underruns, dropouts or crackling sound

2024-03-28 Thread Hui Wang
The content in the pulseaudio.log (#9) is not helpful.

Could you edit /usr/lib/systemd/user/pulseaudio.service:
change the line "ExecStart=/usr/bin/pulseaudio --daemonize=no
--log-target=journal" to "ExecStart=/usr/bin/pulseaudio - --daemonize=no
--log-target=file:/home/$user/pulse.txt"

reboot

connect your bt headset and try to change profile from A2DP to HSP/HFP,
then upload the pulse.txt.

Please upload a complete dmesg with the kernel you updated on 19/03/2024
(dummy output).

And could you also test the latest upstream mainline kernel or ubuntu
24.04 (just put the iso to usb flash drive, boot from it and try ubuntu
24.04, no need to install).

https://kernel.ubuntu.com/mainline/v6.8/

And also, it looks like a hardware issue to me.

[Bug 2058573] Re: alsa/realtek: adjust max output valume for headphone on 2 LG machines

2024-03-20 Thread Hui Wang
** Description changed:

- This is for tracking purpose.
+ [Impact]
+ In an oem project, we found the max playback volume of the headphone
+ is too high on 2 LG machines, it could bring harm to listeners. As
+ requested by OEM customer, we need to decrease the max volume.
+
+
+ [Fix]
+ Cherry-pick a mainline kernel patch, this could fix this issue.
+
+ [Test]
+ Booting with the patched kernel, plug the headphone, set the playback
+ volue to max, run:
+ amixer -c1 contents | grep -n2 "Headphone Playback Volume"
+
+ The value is 77,77 instead of 87,87 like below:
+ numid=1,iface=MIXER,name='Headphone Playback Volume'
+ ; type=INTEGER,access=rw---R--,values=2,min=0,max=87,step=0
+ : values=77,77
+
+
+ [Where problems could occur]
+ This patch changes the amplifier's default value, probably
+ will make the audio malfunction, but this change is specific
+ to those 2 LG machines (by SSID), will not bring regression
+ to other machines. For those 2 machines, we already tested patch,
+ the audio worked well.

verification on mantic:

Install UBUNTU 23.10 on the Lenovo Thinkpad X1C 12Gen, and enable the
mantic-propsed from "Software & Updates". By default, the pulseaudio is
not installed, in the manic, the pipewire replaced the pulseaudio in the
audio stack. I installed the pulseaudio manually by running 'sudo apt-
get update; sudo apt install pulseaudio', the pulseaudio
1:16.1+dfsg1-2ubuntu4 was installed and pipewire-alsa was removed.
Increased the priority to 510 for all packages in proposed by adding
proposed-updates in the /etc/apt/preferences.d/, the upgraded the
pulesaudio to 1:16.1+dfsg1-2ubuntu4.1:

non-audio bt devices (pairing, reconnect, functional test all pass):

[Bug 2051895] Re: Lenovo XT99 BT headset can't work in HFP profile

2024-03-17 Thread Hui Wang
Analysis of autpkgtest failure for Mantic (about comment #16):

1) For libopenmpt/0.7.2-1 (i386), it is a building erorr which has
nothing to do with pulesaudio:

755s /usr/lib/gcc-cross/i686-linux-gnu/13/../../../../i686-linux-gnu/bin/ld:

pattern-dump-c.c:(.text+0x58e): undefined reference to `openmpt_module_destroy'
755s collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status

2) For libsdl2/2.28.3+dfsg-2 (i386), it is a buliding error which has
nothing to do with pusleaudio:

440s use-ttf.c:7:11: fatal error: SDL_ttf.h: No such file or directory
440s 7 | # include
440s | ^~~
440s compilation terminated.
440s + rm -rf /tmp/tmp.CcXjR8RPS6
440s autopkgtest [21:27:55]: test deprecated-use: ---]
440s deprecated-use FAIL non-zero exit status 1

3) For pipewire/0.3.79-2 (i386), it is a buliding error which has
nothing to do with pusleaudio:

1333s + i686-linux-gnu-gcc -otrivial trivial.c -lm
1333s trivial.c:1:10: fatal error: pipewire/pipewire.h: No such file or
directory
1333s 1 | #include
1333s | ^
1333s compilation terminated.
1333s autopkgtest [21:42:52]: test libpipewire-0.3-dev: ---]
1333s libpipewire-0.3-dev FAIL non-zero exit status 1

So in my opinion, these 3 failure have nothing to do with pulseaudio, probably
we should hint them in the tests on i386 enviroment.

2) For pipewire/0.3.48-1ubuntu3 (i386), it is the gstreamer1.0-pipewire's
issue, it doesn't have the plugin libgstpipewire.so:

1170s autopkgtest [21:40:06]: test gstreamer1.0-pipewire:

[Bug 2051895] Re: Lenovo XT99 BT headset can't work in HFP profile

2024-03-06 Thread Hui Wang
I applied the patch and built the binary for jammy and mantic in my ppa
(https://launchpad.net/~hui.wang/+archive/ubuntu/pa-testing)

I installed ubuntu 22.04 and 23.10 on 2 different Thinkpad laptops, then
upgraded the pulseaudio from my ppa (ppa:hui.wang/pa-testing), in theory
my change only affects bluetooth audio devices, it will not bring any
impact to non-audio bluetooth devices, here I did the test with 7
bluetooth audio devices and 2 non-audio devices:

BT audio devices (pairing, connection, re-connection, playback and capture all
worked well):
PLT_BBTGO2 (headset)
Xiaomi Air3 SE (headset)
Crusher Wireless (headset)
SOAIY S18 (sound box)
HK Soho Wireless (headset)
Thinkplus XT99 (headset)
Wl-1000X (headset)

BT non-audio devices (pairing, connection, re-connection, key input all worked
well):
BT3.0 Keyboard
The Pinao 2 keyboard

** Description changed:

  [Summary]
When use the ThinkPluse xt99 bluetooth head set to run the test
com.canonical.certification::bluetooth/audio_record_playback, it cannot record
the sound and playback.
It seems this device cannot switch to Hand free mode in this platform.

  [Steps to reproduce]
Connect the ThinkPluse xt99, use the Handfree mode, then try to record some
voice.

  [Expected result]
The bluetooth headset ThinkPluse xt99 can use as a MIC to input sound.

  [Actual result]
The bluetooth headset xt99 cannot work in the Handfree mode.

  [Failure rate]
  100%

-
  [Impact]
With the current Ubuntu 22.04 oem image, we try to connect the LENOVO
XT99 bt headset and let it work in HFP mode, we select HFP profile
from gnome sound-setting, but the microphone will not auto change to
bt microphone and the bt output could not work too. So this BT headset
could only work in A2DP mode with the current 22.04 OEM image.

And we tried ubuntu 22.04 generic image, mantic image and noble image,
none of them could make the headset work in HFP mode.
-
+
  [Fix]
Cherry-pick a pulseaudio commit from upstream.

  [Test]
- Install the patched pulseaudio and reboot, connect to the LENOVO XT99
- bt headset, select it to work in HFP mode, tested playback and capture,
- all worked well.
+ I installed ubuntu 22.04 and 23.10 on 2 different Thinkpad laptops, then
upgraded the pulseaudio from my ppa (ppa:hui.wang/pa-testing), in theory my
change only affects bluetooth audio devices, it will not bring any impact to
non-audio bluetooth devices, here I did the test with 7 bluetooth audio devices
and 2 non-audio devices:
+
+ BT audio devices (pairing, connection, re-connection, playback and capture
all worked well):
+ PLT_BBTGO2 (headset)
+ Xiaomi Air3 SE (headset)
+ Crusher Wireless (headset)
+ SOAIY S18 (sound box)
+ HK Soho Wireless (headset)
+ Thinkplus XT99 (headset)
+ Wl-1000X (headset)
+
+ BT non-audio devices (pairing, connection, re-connection, key input all
worked well):
+ BT3.0 Keyboard
+ The Pinao 2 keyboard
+

  [Where problems could occur]
This change will impact bt headset negotiation process in the pulseaudio,
so the possiblity of regression is limited to bt headset, it could make
the bt headset fail to connect, but this possibility is very low, we tested
the patch with different bt headset and bt speaker, all worked well.

[Bug 2055283] Re: Intel Bluetooth AX201 needs firmware intel/ibt-0180-4150.sfi

2024-02-28 Thread Hui Wang
** Description changed:

- This is for tracking purpose
+ BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2055283
+
+ [Impact]
+
+ We have an Lenovo laptop, after installing the oem-ubuntu-22.04 image
+ and booting up, the bluetooth couldn't work at all. Checking the dmesg,
+ the bluetooth driver needs to load the firmware intel/ibt-0180-4150.sfi,
+ but there is no this firmware in the linux-firmware of Jammy, and I
+ also checked the Mantic and Noble, Mandic doesn't have this firmware too,
+ Noble already has the firmware since the upstream linux-firmware integrated
+ the intel/ibt-0180-4150.sfi last year.
+
+
+ [Fix]
+
+ Backport 4 commits from upstream linux-firmware, these 4 commits are all
+ on intel/ibt-0180-4150.sfi|ddc
+
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ Put the firmware into the /lib/firmware/intel/, reboot the machine,
+ check dmesg, the bluetooth driver loads the firmware successfully,
+
+ run hciconfig, the hci0 shows up.
+
+ run checkbox testcase, it could pass.
+ [Checkbox job `com.canonical.certification::bluetooth/detect-output` output]
+
+
+ [Where problems could occur]
+
+ Probably could make the Intel AX201 BT adapter couldn't work, but the

[Bug 1966841] Re: alsa/sdw: Fix the audio issue on a Dell machine without internal mic

2022-05-03 Thread Hui Wang
verification firmware-sof under Jammy:

Install the jammy to that dell SNDW machine without internal mic, enable
the -proposed ppa, run apt-get update; apt-get dist-upgrade; check the
firmware-sof-signed version is 2.0-1ubuntu3 now. reboot. After booting
up, check dmesg, the tplg sof-adl-rt711-l2-rt1316-l01.tplg is found and
loaded successfully. check audio devices from gnome-sound-setting, all
output and input devices works as expected.

Verification done for firmware-sof for Jammy.

[Bug 1966841] Re: alsa/sdw: Fix the audio issue on a Dell machine without internal mic

2022-04-12 Thread Hui Wang
Hi Sponsor team,

To fix this bug for jammy, need to add a binary file to firmware-sof-
signed package, but the quilt doesn't support binary file changes, I
can't generate debdiff for this SRU.

Here I referred to the Vicamo and Juerg's solution, add the file to the
git repo directly and send a merge request:
https://code.launchpad.net/~hui.wang/ubuntu/+source/firmware-
sof/+git/firmware-sof/+merge/419359

Please help review it and merge it if no need to change sth in that MR.

thx.

+
+ [Fix]
+ Backport a tplg file which is specific to this mahcine
+
+ [Test]
+ Install the patched linux-firmware and boot the latest oem-5.14 kernel
+ on the machine, check dmesg, it loads the correct tplg, and
+ test speaker and headset, all work well.
+
+ [Where problems could occur]
+ This SRU is adding a new tplg file, it has no chance to introduce
+ a regression.

+ SRU template for linux

we have a Dell ADL laptop which has sdw audio, but there is no camera

  [Where problems could occur]
If it could introduce regression, it will be on the sdw codec matching
for adl machines, then it will make the driver load wrong tplg and make
output device and input device not work anymore. But this possibility
is very low, we already tested the patch on some dell adl machines, no

[Bug 1965496] Re: alsa: enable the cirrus-logic side-codec to make the speaker output sound

2022-03-18 Thread Hui Wang
** Description changed:

- This bug is for tracking purpose.
+ [Impact]
+ We have a couple of lenovo latops models which have cirrus-logic side
+ codec between realtek codec and speaker, it plays a role as amplifier,
+ we need to enable this side-codec, otherwise the speaker can't output
+ sound.
+
+ [Fix]
+ Backport codec patches and some i2c and acpi detection patches from
+ mainline kernel and linux-next
+
+ [Test]
+ boot the patched kernel, run speaker test, both left and right channel
+ could work well.
+
+ [Where problems could occur]
+ If it could introduce regression, it will be on soc wm_adsp codec
+ drivers, since most of patch are adding new codec drivers, it will
+ not touch existing codec drivers. If a machine with wm_adsp codec
+ can't output sound or record sound, it means this SRU introduce
+ the regression on wm_adsp driver, but this possibility is very
+ low, since all patches are picked from mainline kernel.

You said "The situation is different on impish - on this release the mic
is available out of the box.". I remember the impish doesn't install
firmware-sof-signed package out of box, so the the sof-cml.ri is still
provided by linux-firmware of impish, and the sof-cml.ri in is impish is
identical to the sof-cml.ri in the focal.

If so, I guess this is not an issue on the sof-firmware, maybe it is an
issue on the kernel of 5.4.0.

So could you confirm the mic could work under impish without the
firmware-sof-signed package? And could you upload the complete dmesg
under focal with the original sof-firmware in focal?

About the bionic, I am afraid we couldn't make the mic work under it. To
make the mic work, not only needs the kernel and sof-firmware, also
needs to upgrade the alsa-lib, alsa-ucm-conf and pulseaudio.

[Bug 1956855] Re: [SRU] alsa-ucm-conf: Add Realtek 4050 USB Codec profile for a Dell machine

2022-01-09 Thread Hui Wang
** Description changed:

- This bug is for tracking purpose.
+ [Impact]
+ This Dell machine has dual Realtek 4050 USB Codecs as front and rear codec,
the front codec has speaker and headset, the rear codec has line-out audio
jack. Without UCM, the pulseaudio can't detect this two usb audio codec and the
audio can't work at all.
+
+ [Fix]
+ Backport a upstream patch, the patch adds the front and rear profiles in the
ucm, then pulseaudio will enable all audio devices in this machine.
+
+ [Test]
+ booting with patched ucm, open the gnome-sound-setting, we could see usb
speaker, usb headset and usb lineout, play sound to speaker, headset and
lineout, all worked well, record sound via headset, it could record the sound
correctly.
+
+ [Where problems could occur]
+ This SRU adds the new ucm files to a folder, in theory it will not introduce
regressions, but It adds a file USB-Audio.conf, it could make other ucm conf
files in the USB-Audio folder fail to parse, and make the P620 and WD15/19's
audio fail to work, but this possibility is very low, we already tested it and
no regression found so far.

+ [Impact]
+ we have a couple of Dell ADL laptops which have sdw audio, after upgrading

+ audio function work well.
+
+ [Where problems could occur]
+ If it could introduce regression, it will be on the acpi sdw codec
+ parsing, so some sdw audio machines could fail to find the codec, then
+ the whole audio function fails. But this possibility is very low, we
+ already tested the patches on both old bios and new bios.

[Bug 1948811] Re: Touchpad not detected when pci=nocrs not specified

2021-12-07 Thread Hui Wang
the maintainer wants the patch to be verified in some distribution
first, if there is no regression, maybe he will merge the patch:

So I've discussed this with the Fedora kernel maintainers and they have
agreed to add the patch to the Fedora 5.15 kernels, which we will ask
our users to start testing soon (we first run some voluntary testing
before eventually moving all users over).

This will provide us with valuable feedback wrt this patch causing
regressions as you are worried about, or not.

Assuming no regressions show up I hope that this will give you
some assurance that there the patch causes no regressions and that
you will then be willing to pick this up later during the 5.16
cycle so that Fedora only deviates from upstream for 1 cycle.

Regards,

Hans

Verified the new linux-firmware and firmware-sof-signed on the jammy:

A lenovo TGL laptop already installed the 22.04, run sudo apt-get
update; sudo apt dist-upgrade; the output shows the firmware-sof-signed
package will be installed and the linux-firmware will be upgraded. Input
Y and press Enter button, the system will get those packages, unpack
them and setup them. there is no any error during the process.

After the dist-upgrade finishes, run ls /lib/intel/sof/ -la and ls
/lib/intel/sof-tplg/ -la, all files are installed as expected. reboot,
the sof audio driver successfully loads the sof-tgl.ri and topology file
and audio function works well.

+ Need to put Replaces: linux-firmware (<= 1.203) in the debian/control,

[Bug 1952011] Re: [SRU] linux-firmware: add sof-firmware for adl platforms from sof-firmware-v1.9.2

2021-11-23 Thread Hui Wang
** Description changed:

- This bug is for tracking purpose
+ Because we plan to remove sof-firmware related files from linux-firmware
+ of jammy and replace them with a debian package firmware-sof-signed, so
+ this SRU is not applied to jammy. I will submit another SRU to
+ firmware-sof-signed package later.
+
+ [Impact]
+ In the Dell oem project, we have many laptops which has sof dmic or
+ sof soundwire audio design, they need to load firmware and topology
+ files specific to ADL, otherwise the audio driver will fail to
+ initialize and the whole audio can't work.
+
+ [Fix]
+ Integrate the firmware and topology files from sof-firmware-v1.9.2
+
+ [Test]
+ Installed the patched linux-firmware and booting the patched kernel,
+ the audio work well, all output and input devices work normally
+
+ [Where problems could occur]
+ This SRU introduces new firmware and topology files for adl, it has
+ low possibility to introduce regression. If it could, it could
+ possibilily affect the other machines which also need to load firmware
+ and topology files, it could make the audio can't work on those machines,
+ but this possibility is very low, we have tested the SRU on many laptops,
+ no regression found.

2021-11-19 Thread Hui Wang
This is the debdiff for jammy

thx.

** Description changed:

- this bug is for tracking purpose.
+ [Impact]
+ On the machines with legacy HDA audio driver, when users plug a hdmi/dp
monitor, the active output device is still speaker, need users to manually
select the hdmi, then the hdmi audio will be the users' preference, once it is
plugged, it should become the active output automatically. But with the current
PA, after reboot and suspend/resume, the hdmi can't change to be active output
automatically anymore.
+
+ [Fix]
+ Backport an upstream fix, this will fix the issue of "preferred ports being
cleaned by a mistake"
+
+ [Test]
+ On a machine with legacy HDA audio driver, install the patched pulseaudio,
then run 'rm ~/.config/pulse/*; reboot', plug a hdmi monitor, select the hdmi
audio to be active, with the hdmi monitor plugged and reboot, suspend and
resume, check what is the active output, it is still the hdmi audio.
+
+ [Where problems could occur]
+ This patch is in the card-restore.c, if it could introduce regression, it
will be on the default active input/output devices, for example, users select a
input or output device to be active, after reboot, if those devices are
available, they should be active, but they could be replaced by other devices
if a regression is introduced. But this possibility is very low since we tested
the patch on a couple of desktop and laptop machines.

** Patch added: "pulseaudio_15.0+dfsg1-1ubuntu4.debdiff"

[Bug 1951563] Re: alsa/sdw: add sdw audio machine driver for several ADL machines

2021-11-19 Thread Hui Wang
** Description changed:

- This bug is for tracking purpose.
+ [Impact]
+ In the Dell oem project, we need to enable the sdw audio on several
+ ADL machines, without these patches, the audio can't work at all.
+
+ [Fix]
+ Backport some patches from upstream, this adds the audio machine
+ drivers for those adl platforms.
+
+ [Test]
+ Booting the patched kernel, open the gnome-sound-setting, we could
+ see the speaker and microphone, plug headset, the headphone and
+ headset-mic all work well.
+
+ [Where problems could occur]
+ This add some machine drivers for sdw audio, if it could introduce
+ regression, it will be on the Dell previous generation machines which
+ has sdw audio, it could make the audio on those machines not work. But
+ this possibility is very low, we already tested the patches on those
+ machines.
