[Bug 1273764] Re: Grub ignores TIMEOUT options on /etc/default/grub

2019-09-12 Thread Ivan Frederiks
@estanislao-gonzalez-r

GRUB doesn't support writes to LVM so it always treats previous boot as
failed. Sad but true.

This bug seems to be fixed in Xenial proposed package. My system
reported about saned crashes (caused by assertion failure described in

observe any sane related crashes anymore.

[Bug 1132156] Re: Realktek r8169 driver unrelaible with r8101/02

2013-11-05 Thread Ivan Frederiks
I found solution for this issue, at least for my case: one has to set
correct MAC-address before bringing up the interface.

On my board RTL8102E works without EEPROM, so MAC value is unpredictable. In
many cases this random value has multicast bit set to 1. This fact breaks
driver and (or) TCP stack operation:
* r8169 reports that link is down
* r8101 reports that link is OK, but Linux TCP stack ignores packets with
multicast destination MAC

Overall behavior of r8169 seems to be better than r8101's: second one
sometimes stops to transceive packets (once per several hours of
continuous TCP traffic, average load ~30Mbps down). In same conditions
r8169 works without issues (or at least I think so? (c)).

[Bug 610869] Re: mountall ignores nofail mount option

2012-06-26 Thread Ivan Frederiks
@Steve Langasek
Looks like you misunderstood us.

 The 'nofail' option is documented as:
do not report errors for this device if it does not exist.

 The problem you're describing is not one of reporting errors, but a
lack of timeout while waiting for a device to become available on boot.
'nofail' is not a correct option to use for this.

When 'external sas device is down' or 'drive is not always connected'
the device does not exist (and most probably would not become available
in close future) and we want to suppress any errors related to this
fact. In this case 'nofail' option seems to fit perfectly.

[Bug 610869] Re: mountall ignores nofail mount option

2012-05-19 Thread Ivan Frederiks
Are you sure? I need 'nofail' option to use my external hdd with my laptop.
Sometimes hdd remains plugged in for a week and sometimes I take my laptop away
and I want it to continue booting normally.
In this regard I think that documentation of 'timeout' option should be a
separate bug.

[Bug 994612] Re: gnome-screensaver-preferences missing

2012-05-04 Thread Ivan Frederiks
@Marc Deslauriers
There was a tool called gnome-screensaver-preferences that allowed to configure
several gnome-screensaver parameters:
* choose screensaver
* tune screensaver
* set screensaver timeout
* choose whether to lock system or not
Screenshot:
http://www.insidesocal.com/click/2009_1209_gnome_screensaver_preferences.png

This tool was part of gnome-screensaver package and it was there at
least untill Natty. Now it's missing. I think that it's wrong.

[Bug 994612] Re: gnome-screensaver-preferences missing

2012-05-04 Thread Ivan Frederiks
That's ... nice.
xscreensaver's author once said that he won't ever implement features I listed
in bug description. Gnome developers decided to destroy their implementation.
Sometimes innovation is a thing to hate.
I can suggest Ubuntu developers to ship old version of gnome-screensaver with
different name, but it's way to nowhere.

2012-05-04 Thread Ivan Frederiks
Also, I think it a good idea to update header comments (at least line 'Last
Modified' line).
And one more question:
 Ivan, I wanted to try not using the dbus-session abstraction first.
But why?

[Bug 993960] [NEW] Wrong countries are displayed during location search

2012-05-03 Thread Ivan Frederiks
Public bug reported:

When I search for location, wrong countries are matched to cities.
For example:
Moscow, Serbia (should be Russia)
Berlin, The Gambia (should be Germany)
When I select such a city, same wrong country is displayed in main plug-in

But when I move mouse over plug-in icon on the panel, correct country is
displayed on pop-up.

System: Ubuntu 11.04 and Xubuntu 12.04, i386

[Bug 933440] Re: AppArmor profile (in enforce mode) breaks skype

2012-05-03 Thread Ivan Frederiks
@Jamie Strandboge
I tried to use proposed1. It's almost fine, but:
1. one has to add ssl_certs abstraction
2. looks like skype _requires_ owner /dev/shm/pulse-shm* m, and /dev/snd/*
m, to play audio.
3. skype sometimes tries to access .mozilla, but I think it's up to end-user to
allow or deny this.
4. probably one needs to add something like owner @{PROC}/[0-9]*/fd/ r,

Concerning 'mmap a file executable': do you think that it is dangerous?

[Bug 985836] Re: Failed to install grub in expert mode

2012-04-20 Thread Ivan Frederiks
Tried once again, answered no to network mirror question. Syslog got even
better
I'll try to install once again with disconnected network cable.

I've already seen messages like
 Apr 20 10:06:23 main-menu[281]: (process:2969): : No space left on device
during one of installation attempts. I use 8GB virtual hard disk, it should be
sufficient.
This looks like different bug, should I file it?

2012-04-20 Thread Ivan Frederiks
Tired completely offline installation. This time I also used new clean
harddrive. GRUB setup failed. Syslog attached.
I think next time I'll try to perform non-expert install on same machine.

Then one has to check current priority of console-setup messages. If it
was intentionally сhanged then test case should be updated and this bug
is invalid.

[Bug 985804] [NEW] Expert mode does not offer all described keyboard configuration options

2012-04-19 Thread Ivan Frederiks
Public bug reported:

Based on this test: http://testcases.qa.ubuntu.com/Install/AlternateExpert
And on this image:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/20120419/precise-alternate-i386.iso

Below is the list of test actions related to keyboard configuration.
Options marked with /!\ were not offered by installer.

* Select Configure the keyboard and press Enter
/!\ Select the Keyboard model (or it's closest equivalent) and press Enter /!\
the default is Generic 105-key (Intl) PC in most cases this will suffice
* Select NO to detect keyboard layout and press Enter
* Select your keyboard origin and press Enter
* Select your keyboard layout and press Enter
/!\ Select Right Alt to replace AltGr key and press Enter
/!\ Select a compose key (to produce characters not on the keyboard) and press
Enter
/!\ Select your preferred text encoding for your console and press Enter /!\
The best default should be pre-selected for you
/!\ Select your preferred console font and press Enter
/!\ Select your preferred look for the console and press Enter
/!\ Select your console font size and press Enter
/!\ Select the quantity and preferred console and press Enter /!\ On the whole
the default is sufficient

I restarted installation several times, the bug repeated.

** Affects: debian-installer (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 160413] Re: Wake on LAN (WOL) not working with r8169 driver

2012-03-27 Thread Ivan Frederiks
02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI
Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 03)
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. M4A785TD Motherboard
Ubuntu 11.04, x86_64, kernel 2.6.38-13-generic #57-Ubuntu SMP

Wake on lan is not working. Seems that adapter is switched off
completely during shutdown: both link and act leds are off.

Tried:
* Putting ethtool -s eth0 wol g almost everywhere.
* Installing latest (version 8.028.00) r8168 driver from Realtek
* Removing -i option form halt call
* Putting pci-config -B 2 -#1 -S before halt call
* Putting echo -n RLAN  /proc/acpi/wakeup to rc.local
* Switching adapter on and off in BIOS
* Switching WOL option on and off in BIOS

Anyone?

[Bug 794895] Re: Xorg crashes in doListFontsAndAliases

2011-11-09 Thread Ivan Frederiks
I'm sorry, but new Ubuntu release breaks my favorite instruments like
gnome2 and aptitude, so I don't plan to upgrade in the near future. And
I have nVidia GPU only inside work PC. Probably I'll find some time for
a LiveCD test.

Update:
I started LiveCD session on VirtualBox machine, manually installed xfs and
easily reproduced crash by creating /etc/X11/xorg.conf with following contents:
Section Files
FontPath unix/:7100
EndSection

Here is reply from xorg-server:

2011-09-28 Thread Ivan Frederiks
Public bug reported:

I'm using ubuntu 11.04 i386 with proprietary nVidia drivers.
metacity package has version 2.30.3-0ubuntu8
Compositing is disabled.

Sometimes (~once a week) metacity stops responding and starts consuming 100%
CPU. Usually it happens when I close a window. After it all windows become
unusable.
Running metacity-message restart has no effect. If I kill metacity process the
whole X-session terminates and gdm appears.

** Affects: metacity (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 855339] [NEW] Package version is strongly outdated

2011-09-21 Thread Ivan Frederiks
Public bug reported:

Development of libupnp 1.6.6 finished on 2008-04-24 (according to
http://pupnp.sourceforge.net/ChangeLog).
Right now version 1.6.13 is available (since 2011-03-15). There are also many
intermediate versions.
Is there any reason to ship ubuntu with outdated version of libupnp?

[Bug 768793]

2011-09-09 Thread Ivan Frederiks
 Are you sure, Manage Content Plug-ins is not a part of Firefox itself?
Yes, because it disappears when I disable ubufox extension.

@Roberto González Correa
What do you mean by log? I think, that message text and package version
provide enough information for users and developers to identify, locate and fix
problem.
