[Bug 1396379] Re: installer uses first EFI system partition found even when directed otherwise

2024-05-03 Thread Jürgen Hörmann
It is a nightmare when Windows and Linux share one EFI Partition.
Therefore I always use separate EFI partitions for Linux and Windows.

For this to work the installer needs to let me set
a) the boot device if more than one disk is installed
b) must not force select the first EFI partition on the boot drive.

I need to be able to configure /boot/efi to any exfat partition with
boot,system flags on the boot drive.

Each time I boot it looks like the failing services are different.
Currently I get timeout errors with

[Bug 1973122] [NEW] Desktop freezes without conscious action from my side

2022-05-11 Thread Jürgen Gmach
Public bug reported:

My desktop froze two times in the last couple of days.

I have no clue which action led to this.

All windows are frozen then, I still can move the mouse and I finally
need to hit the power button for a hard reset.

/var/crash does not show anything from this week:

```
❯ ls -la /var/crash/
The logfile shows the following suspiscous line:
I am running Ubuntu 20.04 on a Dell XPS - but I'd guess this information
[Bug 1967714] [NEW] application freezes after copy/paste via mouse context menu
2022-04-03 Thread Jürgen Gmach
Public bug reported:
Pidgin 2.13.0
Ubuntu 20.04
Copy/pasting a command into the text box causes Pidgin to freeze - and I
need to force quit the application then.
This only happens when I click in the text field with my right mouse
button and select paste.
This does not happen when I select the text field and copy/paste via
keyboard (CTRL+V).
[Bug 1958852] [NEW] Auto-rotation does not work anymore
2022-01-24 Thread Jürgen Hemelt
Public bug reported:
With my Radeon Vega graphics card auto-rotation of the screen used to
work in 21.04 but does not work anymore in 21.10. Also Cinnamon (which I
have uninstall now) shows an error, saying that hardware acceleration
does not work.
output of `lspci | grep VGA`:
```04:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI]
Picasso/Raven 2 [Radeon Vega Series / Radeon Vega Mobile Series] (rev c1)
04:00.7 Non-VGA unclassified device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD]

[Bug 1951625] [NEW] thunderbird does not restart after minimizing (red dot left of icon)

2021-11-19 Thread Jürgen Iversen
Public bug reported:

After interrupting a Thunderbird session by minimizing (using "-" in the
top right corner) I can't reopen the minimized Thunderbird window as all
other program icons do (and Thunderbird also did until about half a year
ago!) I can not say exactly if an update caused this defect. Maybe
Ubuntu 21.04 which I installed in April 21. Ubuntu 21.10 update did not
eliminate this. Kernel updates either (now running kernel 5.14.15.)

[Bug 1930110] Re: Wake-up after suspend only on second keypress

2021-06-02 Thread Jürgen Böhm
When I last put the computer into suspend, I used the menu point entry
'Suspend' in the top right menu (I use gnome-flashback). In this case,
wake up by keypress worked correctly, so probably you found the root of
the problem with the fn+f1-key.

I then produced the logs you asked for: 'dmesg > dmesg-before.log' and
'lsmod > lsmod.log'

Finally I ran showkey, the output is below. But pressing fn+f1 while in
showkey immediately led to a suspend, from which two keypresses were
necessary to get to normal operation. Afterwards the following was the
content of the terminal:

juergen@regulus:~$ sudo showkey
kb mode was ?UNKNOWN?
[ if you are trying this under X, it might not work
since the X server is also reading /dev/console ]

press any key (program terminates 10s after last keypress)...
keycode  28 release
keycode 142 press
keycode 142 release

I then made a 'dmesg > dmesg-after.log' to enable comparison of normal
awake (dmesg-before.log) and awake with two keypresses (dmesg-
after.log).

[Bug 1930110] [NEW] Wake-up after suspend only on second keypress

2021-05-28 Thread Jürgen Böhm
Public bug reported:

My computer is a HP Z240 tower workstation, Ubuntu version:

Description:Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS
Release:18.04

I can and do suspend my computer by pressing Fn-Key + F1-key on the HP
keyboard. The F1 key is marked with a crescent moon to indicate this
functionality. The suspend state is indicated by a blinking led on the
computer case.

>From 16.04 I was used, that in suspend state any keypress on the
keyboard would wake up the computer again immediately: The screen would
(if turned on) display what was last visible when suspend was executed
through the abovementioned function key. The led on the computer case
would light steadily.

Now a keypress on the suspended computer leads to a short activation of
the harddisk, the led on the computer case will light steadily but the
monitor (also if on) remains dark. After about 2-5 seconds the harddisk
stands still again, the computer becomes silent and the led on the
computer case is blinking again, as in suspend mode. I presume the
computer is now again in suspend mode.

When this state is reached, a second keypress leads to a correct awake
from suspend, the harddisk spins, the led on the case lights steadily
and the monitor displays what is expected. The computer can then be used
as expected.

Note: I have 64 GByte of RAM and only 32GB Swap partition, so I presume
(and hope) that hibernation (RAM to Disk) plays no role here, only
suspend and wake-up from suspend.

2021-04-11 Thread Jürgen Rademacher
Hello!

Thank you for your support. I tried to update Ubuntu the way you told me
- but it still doesn't work. It gives back the same mistake it did
before. Any suggestions what to do? I'm desperate and don't know waht to do.

Thank you.

[Bug 1569724] Re: noatime option

2020-10-29 Thread Jürgen Hörmann
In Bug #833980 Michael Vogt writes:

> I added some code into trunk now that will detect noatime and simply
bail out for now. We need a more clever way of detecting the snapshots
age in this case. The code must ensure that it detects when a snapshot
was booted last, not when it was taken.

Maybe that is the reason for not merging Dark Dragons code. On the other
Hand we really need a solution for all the SSD users around today.

[Bug 1569724] Re: noatime option

2020-10-29 Thread Jürgen Hörmann
Hello Michael, I Subscribed you to this issue because you are the
maintainer of the package as stated here:
https://www.ubuntuupdates.org/package/core/groovy/universe/base/apt-
btrfs-snapshot

as @darkdragon-001 stated he created a PR for this that does not rely on
atime but on the filestamp in the snapshot name. Unfortunately he filed
his PR against an inofficial fork.

I did not find the original repository that is the source for the Ubuntu
package. Can you help out here. Where do we need to sent the PR or patch
to?

I'm hit by this bug too and I'd help to resolve this.

[Bug 1888936] [NEW] cifsd deadlocks / CIFS related Oopses

2020-07-25 Thread Jürgen Kreileder
Public bug reported:

We're running a server at AWS which collects data from machines over
CIFS. This involves a a lot of mounting and umounting of CIFS (about
100 targets with 2 shares each with 10 delay in between). The targets
might sometimes become unavailable when they turned of for the weekend
or rebooted.

The server doing this has to be rebooted every few hours because CIFS
connection start to hang and don't recover. The usual symptom is:

That is, cifsd gets stuck fetching credentials for the reconnect. I'm attaching
the full syslog with stack traces from all hung cifsd task (I don't see where
the deadlock is there).

The mounting/unmounting is done in a privileged Docker container. If we
restart that, we usually run into an Oops:

I have the Problem with Kerner 4.15.0-43.

rdesktop sometimes hangs fullscreen and can only be killed via ssh from
another pc.

With this bug however I cannot restart sddm and after killing rdesktop
the screen stays frozen with the rdesktop output.

I already switched back to Thunderbird. TB has its issues, too. But I
can use it as a productive tool. Unfortunately, evolution is not usable
in a professional environment at this stage.

[Bug 1776078] [NEW] Wrong display of calendar entries with different timezone for start and stop date

2018-06-10 Thread Jürgen Kübler via ubuntu-bugs
Public bug reported:

Timezone of stop date is ignored for ics files and caldac calendars.
The attached example has a during of 7 hours. It gets imported correctly with
evolution.
However, it looks like an event with a duration of one hour in the calendar.
Thunderbird displays the event correctly (as my iPhone).

Import creates error message if stop time in local timezone is 'before'
start time in specified timezone (see second example). Event is not
displayed in the regular calender view but can be seen in the list view.

When I open the entry, I can only choose a timezone for the entire
event, i.e., not for start and stop date separately.

Expected behavior:
- correct display of length of event in the calendar view
- separate entry fields for timezones for start and stop date (cf. Thunderbird
- Lightning)

PyQt4 is not the problem - without it QGIS 2.x wouldn't run at all.

But QtWebKit is not available for PyQt4 anymore in Debian/Ubuntu. IIRC because
the webkit C++ libraries were about to be removed and PyQt4.QtWebKit was
removed upfront. QGIS itself doesn't use it, but a bunch of plugins do -
openlayers being one of them.

So this is not an actual qgis packaging problem, nor an upstream problem, nor a
problem of the plugin.

The removal of the C++ libraries never happened and the QGIS packages from
qgis.org include the PyQt4.QtWebKit bindings based on the still available
libraries.

[Bug 1723080] Re: Caldav Issues with evolution 3.26

2018-05-12 Thread Jürgen Kübler via ubuntu-bugs
Hi Kirk,
I found a solution. The issue seems to be an outdated version of caldav used
for Synology's webdav server. Here is what I did
- Expert calendar and tasks list (separately) to ics files
- Deactivate caldav in the webdav server
- Installed the new calendar application in my Diskstation
(https://www.synology.com/en-global/dsm/feature/calendar)
- Create a new calendar (not that you cannot delete the default calendar 'my
calendar', which can be anoying)
- Imported the calendar via web interface
- Created new calendar and task list in evolution
- Used evolution to import task list
Somewhat cumbersome but it worked. Two positive side effects:
- It was easy to implement separate calendars for 'home' and 'work'
- The new calendar better integrates with my iPhone. I can now invite others
to appointments from my iPhone. This option was not available with the
previous solution.
Hope this helps.
Best,
Jürgen

[Bug 1723080] Re: Caldav Issues with evolution 3.26

2018-05-08 Thread Jürgen Kübler via ubuntu-bugs
I have a suspicion that I cannot verify, though. It might be that the new
version of evolution is not backward compatible with older caldav
specifications.
I stopped using evolution and use Thunderbird and Lightning. There are some
glitches but overall it works.

Advise like

is not helpful to me.

I can't help here, anymore and will stop using bugzilla for gnome.org

[Bug 1723080] [NEW] Caldav Issues with evolution 3.26

2017-10-12 Thread Jürgen Kübler
Public bug reported:

I noticed a series of issues with caldav when switching to Ubuntu
17.10. Everthing works fine with Ubuntu GNOME 17.04.

Error message during ics import:
"Cannot receive calendar objects: Failed to put data: HTTP error code 201
(Created): The server responded with an HTML page, which can mean there’s an
error on the server or with the client request."
The import successfully finished regardless. It's still a nuisance.

Attempts to pick a date (calendar entry and tasks) are followed by the message:
"Evolution want to inhibit shortcuts.
You can restore shortcuts by pressing Shift-Ctrl-Escape"

Creating new tasks: Same error message as for ics import. Tasks are
only stored when date *and* time are specified. Error message needs to
be ignored and window to be close with 'discard changes'.

Update of calender appointments (external): just does not work

Could not test handling of confirmations of meeting invites, yet

[Bug 1174654] Re: qemu-system-x86_64 takes 100% CPU after host machine resumed from suspend to ram

2016-10-06 Thread Jürgen Veidt
I observed a similar behavior with a different application on a Windows host.
The application is using the multimedia timer. In my case it seems that the
timer is catching up the ticks missed during suspend to ram after resume. The
timer thread performing the callbacks has high-priority on Windows and makes
the host machine almost unusable for a certain time depending on the suspend
duration.
Maybe it is a similar situation here?

[Bug 1573591] Re: package mysql-server-5.7 5.7.11-0ubuntu6 failed to install/upgrade: Unterprozess installiertes post-installation-Skript gab den Fehlerwert 1 zurück

2016-04-24 Thread Jürgen Haas
I think I found the solution: when upgrading from the previous version
and if you keep your original /etc/mysql/mysql.conf.d/mysqld.cnf then
you most likely have an option in there which is called "myisam-
recover". If you rename that to "myisam-recover-option", then you should
be able to restart the mysql service.

[Bug 1567933] [NEW] Characters corrupted during install on HPZ240

2016-04-08 Thread Jürgen Böhm
Public bug reported:

When installing Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Desktop from an install DVD isoimage on my
machine

ubuntu-14.04.4-desktop-amd64.iso

HP Workstation Z240 Tower

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1245v5 4C (3.50GHz, 8MB Cache, 2133 MHz FSB)
RAM: 32GB DDR4-2133 ECC (2x 16GB)
HDD1: 1TB SATA III, 7.200 U/min
HDD2: 1TB SATA III, 7.200 U/min
Graphic: NVIDIA Quadro K2200 4GB, PCIe
Optical Drive: DVD+-RW Slim SuperMulti, SATA
LAN: 10/100/1000 MBit onBoard

I encountered during installation problems with screen display of
characters. Many characters appeared in the wrong color (white on grey
instead of black on grey or other similar color changes) and so became
nearly unreadable. Nevertheless I completed the installation mostly by
guessing the unreadable parts (but could not use custom partitioning
because it was too risky to enter the necessary data without being able
to read the displayed texts).

The installed version showed similar color corruptions in all places
where text was displayed. After installing the HP driver CD
(hp_drivercd_ubuntu14_sp74252.iso) from the HP Homepage, the problem
disappeared. Nevertheless I think the bug should be fixed, as it's a bit
risky to go through the installation half blind.

[Bug 1527722] Re: QGIS compilation fail only on Wily/amd64

2015-12-21 Thread Jürgen E . Fischer
Brian: Are you positive this is a qgis problem? As said it only
appears on wily/amd64 and it doesn't even apply to qgis 2.8 (which
builds fine even on wily/amd64). I think it's related to automoc - so
something in the conjunction of cmake and Qt - hence the unspecific
assignment to "ubuntu"
