[Bug 1580123] Re: xrandr --scale (again) confines mouse to native solution

2019-10-16 Thread J.D.
It would be very helpful for users on LTS systems if xserver-xorg-core
version 1.20 would be backported (currently 1.19 on bionic/18.04). This
bug basically affects everyone with a high dpi system and an external
screen because this setup requires scaling the screen to work.

[Bug 1764806] [NEW] urfkilld segfault wifi function (Dell XPS 13 9350)

2018-04-17 Thread J.D.
Public bug reported:

With kernel 4.4.0-119-generic on Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS (xenial) x86_64 and
included intel_hid driver (which seems to be responsible for the key
events), I get the following report when pressing the function key
Fn+PrtScr which is supposed to trigger the wifi blocking state using
rfkill interface via urfkilld daemon:

Apr 17 19:02:45 aton kernel: [ 387.963583] urfkilld[3119]: segfault at 18 ip

It seem that urfkilld crashes and gets restarted by systemd or similar.
Nothing happens to the Wifi button state which can be shown via

rfkill list

Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no
1: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no

Another oddity is that the urfkill package in all Ubuntu versions is

0.6.0~20150318.103828

but upstream websites have

0.3.0 (https://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/urfkill/)
0.5.0 (https://github.com/lcp/urfkill/releases)

only. Seems like almost abandoned software to me.

Since this was a distribution upgrade, I purged and reinstalled the
package but without effect.

Any ideas?

[Bug 1705882] [NEW] Bluetooth connection to device fails from Ubuntu 16.04

2017-07-23 Thread J.D.
Public bug reported:

Bluetooth connection to a bluetooth IOIO device fails using a USB bluetooth
adapter from a Ubuntu 16.04 system. The same device could be successfully
connected using two non-Ubuntu systems:
  a) The same system hardware setup (dual-boot) running Windows 8 could connect
without any problems. Also could run applications using serial-port associated
with this connection.
  b) Android Note 4 device using bluetooth was able to successfully connect and
run apps.

Therefore, it was concluded that the Ubuntu 16.04 bluetooth service has
a problem.

Note: The USB bluetooth adapter used: BTA8000 from Cirago on the ubuntu
system as well as the IOIO device. The adapters on the device and system
have been verified to have different MAC addresses and works well with
other devices.

Procedure: Using the Bluetooth control in system-tray -> Bluetooth
settings -> +, the device was located as IOIO (8A:22). Here, device was
clicked upon, changed PIN to 4545 and pressing next resulted in the
device being successfully added. However, the system-tray status of the
device continues to say Connection is OFF. Attempting to turnon
connection results in changing the system-tray blue-tooth icon to Keys-
Icon for few seconds and then reverting back to the bluetooth icon. The
device remains in disconnected state and cannot be accessed.

The btmon trace (log-line 1277) and bluetoothd syslog (log-line 405)
logs seem to indicate that the local host is sending a disconnect
request after receiving a SDP: Service Search Attribute Response from
the device. The src/device.c:connect_profiles()
/org/bluez/hci0/dev_00_1B_DC_06_8A_22 (all), client :1.73 must result in
connection setup - not disconnect.

Log information was collected for the above procedure.
systemInfo.txt: Information about the system bluetooth.
syslog.blue: syslog with busr/lib/bluetooth/bluetoothd --noplugin=sap -d in
/lib/systemd/system/bluetooth.service
btmon.log: result of running sudo btmon

[Bug 1667158] Re: Regression: Borders of windows and desktop background are displayed badly after suspend/resume

2017-04-14 Thread J.D. Laub
For me, 381.09 addressed the fat white borders around windows. However,
cool-retro-term comes back with a completely white window. I can type
"exit" into it to shut it down, & it acts normally after relaunching it.
I haven't yet identified other programs unhappy after a resume under
381.09 - in particular, gnome-terminal works fine.

[Bug 1681025] Re: dhclient fails to assign IP address during system boot inspite of valid DHCP Offer when time change is performed by systemd-timesyncd.service

2017-04-07 Thread J.D.
Please find the attached patch service that was used to delay the
network initialization so that it is not affected by the time-change by
systemd-timesyncd.service. This may not exactly be an acceptable
solution but demonstrates how equivalent changes can be performed to
arrive at the solution.

[Bug 1681025] [NEW] dhclient fails to assign IP address during system boot inspite of valid DHCP Offer when time change is performed by systemd-timesyncd.service

2017-04-07 Thread J.D.
Public bug reported:

System Information:
Description:Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS
Release:16.04

Package Information:
network-manager:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 1.2.6-0ubuntu0.16.04.1

Expected Behavior:
The system has one ethernet interface ens160 that is expected to be assigned an
IPv4 address using DHCP as part of the bootup process so that services that
depends on presence of IPv4 address do not fail to initialize during the boot
process.

Problem Behavior:
The ethernet interface ens160 was UP but no IPv4 address was assigned inspite
of correct response from the DHCP server, thereby causing the services that
depends on presence of IPv4 address to fail during the boot process.

Problem Details:
The default 16.04.2 LTS server installed in a VMWare virtual machine running on
SuperMicro server using ESXi 6 fails to obtain an IP address from a DHCP server
during system startup when there is a simultaneous time change as evidenced by
"systemd[1]: Time has been changed" entry in syslog. The system successfully
obtains the IP address after significant delay (ranging from 2 - 5 minutes)
after system startup.

Note that the system has open-vmware-tools package and the VMWare tools
settings are set to NOT synchronize the guest time, thereby eliminating
any scope of interference from virtualization host (The host itself is
set to use NTP synchronization and has correct timing).

Wireshark was used to sniff the BOOTP messages. When system is rebooted,
system sends a DHCP Release to the DHCP server. When system starts, it
broadcasts a valid DHCP Discover to network and received a valid DHCP
Offer from the network within 4 secs. Note that a "Time has been
changed" log appears just before dhclient logs "No DHCPOFFERS received"
in syslog. (The time appears to be moved ahead by around 6 mins.)

After about 4 minutes, system broadcasts a valid DHCP Discover to which
DHCP server responds with DHCP Offer, system responds with DHCP Request
and DHCP server responds with DHCP Ack and the system is assigned its IP
address. The dhclient logs in syslog concurs with the wireshark trace:

Apr 6 18:39:05 etCorgServer dhclient[1071]: DHCPDISCOVER on ens160 to
255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 3 (xid=0x92322e17)
Apr 6 18:39:08 etCorgServer dhclient[1071]: DHCPDISCOVER on ens160 to
255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 8 (xid=0x92322e17)
Apr 6 18:39:08 etCorgServer dhclient[1071]: DHCPREQUEST of 192.168.1.161 on
ens160 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 (xid=0x172e3292)
Apr 6 18:39:08 etCorgServer dhclient[1071]: DHCPOFFER of 192.168.1.161 from
192.168.1.1
Apr 6 18:39:09 etCorgServer dhclient[1071]: DHCPACK of 192.168.1.161 from
192.168.1.1
Apr 6 18:39:09 etCorgServer dhclient[1071]: bound to 192.168.1.161 -- renewal
in 33171 seconds.

An attempt to release and reacquire the IP address after the system is
up and running always succeeds immediately with the aforesaid "happy"
usecase.

Workaround Attempted:
Turning off systemd-timesyncd.service always allows dhclient to immediately
assign the IP address during the boot process. Turning it on leads to the above
problem usecase with very high probability. Based on this observation, an
assumption can be made that the time synchronization happens to overlap the
DHCP processing performed by dhclient. There is a time-change which causes the
DHCP Offer sent by the DHCP server to be ignored and dhclient to snooze for a
long time before attempting another DHCP Discover message to the server. Under
such circumstances, the services that depend on presence of an IP address fail.

Attempted Workaround:
Above assumption was further used to create a delayNetwork.service patch
one-shot systemd service that causes the networking service to delay
networking.service until time-sync.target is reached by the
systemd-timesyncd.service. Such patch seems to cause dhclient to always assign
IP address during boot process. However, it would be desirable to ensure that
dhclient and/or the networking.service take correct steps to protect itself
against race conditions that may arise due to time changes affected by the
systemd-timesyncd.service. At the very least, possibility of time change during
such critical and vulnerable system component initialization must be minimized
by isolating the time change to occur during a bootup phase when such
components are not being initialized.

[Bug 1637688] Re: Terminal and file manager scrolls inverted

2017-03-19 Thread J.D. Laub
I'm seeing the same behavior under 16.04, on a desktop with a mouse (no laptop
touchpad). There's no "natural scrolling" option in "system settings | mouse &
touchpad", so to get natural scrolling, I put this in my ~/.Xmodmap:
pointer = 1 2 3 5 4 6 7 8 9 10 11 12
(note 4 & 5 are reversed). Just to be clear, "natural scrolling" means
movement is opposite the window's scrollbar: move mousewheel up, & the window
scrollbar should move down.

The Xmodmap setting happily affects firefox, chromium, thunderbird,
xterm, etc., but not gnome-terminal, files (nautilus), & cool-retro-
term.

touchpad and a scrolling motion is made (in the center, or at either
side), it causes the mouse to move as if it were being moved normally
sometimes, other times the mouse stays still and doesn't move, but no
scrolling is accomplished and the cursor doesn't change to a scrolling
cursor.

Actual Touchscreen Behavior: The touch screen shows the same behavior,
except there is no case when the mouse stays still, it will always move
as if being moved normally. In addition, the touchscreen's precision is
markedly rough compared to my experience using this same touchscreen on
Windows 8.1 (which has since been wiped from this machine, with
pleasure).

Touchpad Capabilities: Normal mouse movement, right-click using touchpad
button, left-click using touchpad button, tap-to-click using touchpad,
dragging the mouse while something is selected (either with the buttons
or tap-to-click).

Touchscreen Capabilities: Normal mouse movement, single-tap to select,
dragging things after selecting them.

2014-09-06 Thread J.D.
Sure. The listing on the package says: HD Pavilion 14 Notebook PC
14-v062us. Then it lists the product number as: G6S68UA#ABA.

I hope this helps! If you need any other info, just let me know! :)

[Bug 1366382] Re: [HP Pavilion 14-v062us Notebook PC] Touchpad recognized as generic mouse, scroll not working

2014-09-06 Thread J.D.
Hi,

I'm sorry, but I can't do that for you because I installed Linux on the
entire hard drive. I don't have a backup copy of Windows 8.1 (because it
was awful and I didn't want to keep it), and I don't have installation
disks for any other versions of Windows that are compatible with the
BIOS software update. If I had known this before, I would have updated
before wiping the drive. What I can tell you is that the scroll function
worked in Windows 8.1 -- so I know it had the capacity to work. I'm
sorry I can't help you more with that.

If I'm mistaken and there is some way to update it without Windows,
please let me know. I'd be happy to try!

J.D.

[Bug 1075251] Re: package mysql-server-5.5 5.5.28-0ubuntu0.12.04.2 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2012-11-09 Thread J.D. Stone
I was able to fix this...

Steps

1) I ran 'sudo mysqld' and noticed the error:

[Note] Server hostname (bind-address): '10.0.1.13'; port: 3306
[Note]   - '10.0.1.13' resolves to '10.0.1.13';
[Note] Server socket created on IP: '10.0.1.13'.
[ERROR] Can't start server: Bind on TCP/IP port: Cannot assign requested address

I realized that I had the 'bind-address' directive set to: 'bind-address
= 10.0.1.13' and remembered that my IP address changed on my server, so
once I commented that out or changed it to 'bind-address =
192.168.11.45', I was able to re-run 'upgrade' on apt again and this
time 'Setting up mysql-server-5.5 (5.5.28-0ubuntu0.12.04.2) ...' passed
and didn't fail.

So this might work for you...

[Bug 305934] Re: padlock-sha.ko fails to load since 2.6.28-2-generic

2011-03-01 Thread J.D.
I just want to add that I also experienced this with a recent backports
kernel on Debian Lenny (). It seems like the padlock-sha modules loads
the kernel generic sha module as fallback. I had the following aliases
set:

alias aes padlock_aes
alias sha1 padlock_sha

Removing the sha1-padlock_sha alias made the module load fine at boot
time and /proc/crypto looks nice without failing selftests. This seems
to be a change from earlier kernel versions, where this alias was
recommended to be set by some tutorials.

[Bug 348343] Re: [Jaunty] Volume keys causing an endless loop with pulseaudio

2010-05-12 Thread J.D.
This is just a hint but it could solve many of the related bugs here, it
only applies to keyboards normally known to work correctly with hotkeys:

I had the same problems here under Karmic (after some system changes)
and it came back under Lucid after I thought it was corrected by the
upgrade. Strange thing is: this happend with the multimedia special keys
only but with a normal Cherry XPress usb keyboard (which always
happend to work nicely before. Using showkey on the console showed
that none of these keys were released and concordingly the volume
control and other hotkey functions were repeated forever. It gave me
some headaches until I decided to unplug and reconnect the keyboard to
another usb port where it worked nicely again.

I guess since notebook keyboards are connected via USB and FN special
keys work like mine this could be the reason for many of these bugs. So
if a physical disconnect is possible, try it and start the computer
again with usb disconnected. Then reattach the keyboard and see what
happens. Maybe unloading the usb hid modules has the same effect but for
me the error persisted over several reboots.

[Bug 42720] Re: Copying files to webdav broken (first completely copied to RAM and then transfered)

2010-03-24 Thread J.D.
I don't know whether this is the same, but copying large files (~2 GB)
make the progress bar to advance way to fast until 1 GB and then stop
there forever. If you try to unmount the virtual file system, it gives
you a DBUS error message:

DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply.
Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply,
the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout
expired, or the network connection was broken.

To use the FS again, you have to reboot (at least this is the only way I
know of).

I counterchecked with cadaver which uploads these files without
problems.

life, so no more fixes will be provided for it.
 Thanks in advance.

[Bug 373306] [NEW] gnome-power-manager freezes desktop when ACPI_PROCESSOR kernel option disabled

2009-05-07 Thread J.D.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

While running a xenomai/adeos patched kernel (2.6.28.7), the desktop
freezes when left unattended after a few minutes. Someone on the xenomai
mailing list found that if gnome-power-manager is uninstalled the
desktop freezing problem is resolved.

The xenomai/adeos kernel patch requires that kernel config option
'ACPI_PROCESSOR' is disabled. So from the workaround discovered by the
xenomai community and the above requirement it seems gnome-power-manager
has a problem if this kernel option is disabled.

Unfortunately the proposed workaround by the xenomai community may not
be desirable for ubuntu users. In Ubuntu 9.04, uninstalling gnome-power-
manager also requires uninstalling 'ubuntu-desktop'.

[Bug 361706] [NEW] vanilla kernel compiling fails intermittently

2009-04-15 Thread J.D.
Public bug reported:

Whatever is causing this problem, its not easily reproducible. Here's
what happened. I was trying to compile a vanilla kernel (2.6.28.7)
downloaded from kernel.org. During the build process I got the following
compile error:

The important line is:

include/asm-generic/pgtable-nopmd.h:21:2: error: invalid preprocessing
directive #d

When I opened 'pgtable-nopmd.h', line 21 is '#define PMD_SIZE (1UL
PMD_SHIFT)'. Obviously there is something wrong with the
c-preprocessor/gcc or some other tool in the chain. When I restarted the
build process, 'pgtable-nopmd.h' included just fine and the kernel
compile when on fine.

I have seen this bug once before. It was a different file, but the exact
same behavior. And again, once I restarted build process, the compiling
resumed with no problems.

I am not sure that this is the cause of the problem but for
completeness, I have changed the /bin/sh symbolic link to point to
'/bin/bash' instead of '/bin/dash'. Here are the rest of my system
stats:

[Bug 104512] Re: [Package Request] sun-java6-plugin on AMD64?

2008-06-27 Thread J.D.
Sorry to be impatient on this but where are we at on this? Waiting for
Sun?

This is a HUGE problem for me... this isn't I can't play my party poker
or check my bills online. This makes my Ubuntu box completely
worthless. I am at a facility that uses a Cisco Java applet to
authenticate users on the network... no java plugin for my browser, no
Cisco applet, no login to web - dead box.

In an era where the Internet is so important, I think its gateways
(browsers) and their associated functionality should demand the highest
priority from distro authorities. So much so that I would even vote to
take amd64 support out of Ubuntu *until* things like this are fixed. At
the very least take the amd64 download off the main downloads page.
Granted.. I know I am probably a very small minority of the users but as
it stands, i have no use for my box right now. Will have to fall back to
32 bit version until this is fixed.

[Bug 158159] libcgal-dev requires updated dependencies

2007-10-28 Thread J.D.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libcgal-dev

As stated in the CGAL Installation documentation,
(http://www.cgal.org/Manual/3.3/doc_html/installation_manual/Chapter_installation_manual.html#Section_2),

Having GMP version 4.1.4 or later and MPFR version 2.0.1 or later installed is
highly recommended. These libraries can be obtained from http://gmplib.org/ and
http://www.mpfr.org/, respectively, if they should not be present on your
system. Note that MPFR used to be included with GMP up to GMP version 4.1.X,
but it is not
included anymore starting from GMP 4.2. Within CGAL, support for GMP requires
also MPFR and vice versa.

I believe the dependence on GMP 4.1.1 is more than just highly
recommended. I recently got the following compile errors while building
one of the examples from the CGAL manual.. The errors are all related to
stuff missing in GMP releated files. I can include the code I used to
generate the errors but it comes directly (unedited) from section 45.3.5
of their manual (the user-defined distance and point class). Although, I
am sure other examples would produce similar errors.

[Bug 156403] Re: cmake seg faults

2007-10-23 Thread J.D.
First I was a little shocked at how quickly this bug was closed. I
already provided the CMake code that produced the seg fault... look, I
know with a new release, everyone is probably flooded with new bugs. But
simply closing this one right off I think was a little premature.

At any rate, as you have asked, here is a CMakeLists.txt file which
produces the seg fault. I have even confirmed that the error was not
present in Feisty (also previously noted in the original report of this
bug). See the terminal output below:

** USING FEISTY VERSION OF CMAKE **
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/code/mysrc$ cmake -version

Might be nice if this or something similar were handled by dpkg.
