As I use Evince very, very often, I've noticed that when I search for
text in my large documents, that a text progress appears at the bottom
of the screen. I'm assuming that this is a logarithmic search for text,
and since incremental progress can be displayed (as text,
I recommend going into Pidgin, and switching your audio settings from
PulseAudio to the corresponding audio system on your desktop (ALSA, OSS,
etc.). Until the issue with crackling and distortion in PulseAudio is
fixed, Pidgin's notifications will continue to sound like that.
