[Bug 1651635] Re: XPS 13 9360 trackpad locks into scroll mode

2017-11-15 Thread James D.
Haha, ok ok. Recreated it in 16.04 by applying pressure to the trackpad
with my palm. It seems better now on both versions but I do suspect a
hw issue. Dell is coming out to replace it under warranty. Hoping it's
not a design flaw that impacts all touchpads ,, or maybe they have a
newer revision of trackpad because of this issue. that'd be nice.

[Bug 1651635] Re: XPS 13 9360 trackpad locks into scroll mode

2017-11-14 Thread James D.
Solid hour so far , zero problems. Usually the problem would have
already happened on 17.10. I believe there is a bug, that's not to say
some people don't have a hardware issue, it doesn't seem to apply in my
case. I'm rolling my install on this notebook back to 16.04 lts and I
will report back if it happens again, if nobody hears from me in days or
weeks, it means moving back to 16 resolved my problem.

Spoke too soon. Happened again, downgraded BIOS to 2.2.1 , works fine
now. I can tell this is the correct fix because on initial ubuntu login
the mouse would hang for a few seconds before even becoming usable. Now
it doesn't do that at all and no other glitches seem to be happening.

..and just when I was about to downgrade the bios, it seems to be
working. I cleaned some crud out from the sides of the trackpad. Could
have been it. Maybe driver config can be changed to ignore the edges of
the trackpad to avoid this? If anything changes I will update.

[Bug 1026046] Re: Missing support for thumb resting on bottom of clickpad

2014-04-20 Thread James D.
This problem still persists in latest 14.04 .. how this hasn't been
fixed yet I don't know. It makes using the touchpad painful. The patch
above still works and helps but once you try to say, edit images in
gimp, and have the cursor fly across the screen at random times, you
realize its still broken even with the patch.

Loving 14.04 on my xps 14 otherwise.

believe it or not, Two finger scrolling is ok for me, maybe its because
of how I do it... when click and dragging after the patch, it bounces
around the screen though, after dragging for a few seconds to 10-15,
depends. The patch overall does help a lot tho.

FWIW. On my synaptics pad I set AreaBottomEdge 3800 , FingerHigh 40
FingerLow 30. This did seem to stop some of the bouncing/sensitivity
you were talking about.

[Bug 1026046] Re: Missing support for thumb resting on bottom of clickpad

2014-04-05 Thread James D.
This bug is annoying enough that I'm putting a new Dell XPS 14 on the
shelf until its fixed, possibly even returning the thing if it gets
close to the 30 day return limit. I'll stick with my clunky HP
notebook with a working two button touchpad until it gets sorted out.
I can try compiling from git, anyone have a howto on how to get it done,
i'm not a serious developer and havent built a driver from git in
forever.I also considered buying a new ultrabook with classic
touchpad, there arent that many, and the ones that are out have other
issues. Are there other clickpad ultrabooks that dont use synaptics
that are functioning properly under Ununtu? (even if its 14.04 LTS)

[Bug 1026046] Re: Missing support for thumb resting on bottom of clickpad

2014-04-05 Thread James D.
http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=4v9JP2pe

I applied the patch there , built the new package and installed. I was
thrilled at first, it worked... except it introduces another problem,
now when scrolling for a little while with the button held down the
cursor jumps around the screen. Its like theres a warpzone spot that
shows up on the touchpad and when you hit it your cursor ends up at the
other end of the screen at least its some kind of progress.

Right, one revision higher... and 13.04 worked FINE... so chances are
this will lead to nothing. I may or may not spend the time to flash
since I need to load windows to do it.

Turns out the .exe from HP has no .iso file in it, so the instructions
listed in the link you sent don't appear to be valid. So I would indeed
need to boot a recent copy of windows, easier said than done. I will
probably need to install a different hard disk and install the OS to it.
a pain in the ass.

2013-11-02 Thread James D.
yeah i'm not going to bother with it... i installed the latest amd/ati
proprietary video drivers.. which handle suspend/resume fine. The issue
I now have with those is brightness no longer works .. xrandr --output
LVDS --brightness 0.3 works but messes with colors. there seems to be
more complaints about brightness issues so that issue may be fixed
first. I will live with no brightness controls for now I guess.

Just tested with the mainline kernel you linked, same behavior...
screen never turns back on, like before I can enter my password and hear
the toggle sounds when changing volume, wifi led lights up, so it
appears all is well besides the screen not coming back on.

[Bug 1239765] [NEW] Resume fails on HP Envy DV6 notebook (AMD APU)

2013-10-14 Thread James D.
Public bug reported:

Latest Ubuntu 13.10 - Suspend works when closing screen, upon resume
everything seems to resume except the display which remains blank.
Adjusting brightness does nothing and needs a hard reboot. This does
NOT happen when using latest catalyst proprietary drivers (however those
drivers cannot adjust screen brightness).

So, i'm assuming this is an open source radeon driver bug, but not
completely certain.

[Bug 978891] Re: ubuntu 12.04 doesn't boot when usb device plugged in (except usb mouse)

2013-05-09 Thread James D.
Nope... same problem.. its worse with a usb mouse plugged in, but the
lockups can happen at boot with nothing plugged in... this could be a
different bug than the OP

2013-05-03 Thread James D.
Just applied kernel 3.8.0-19-generic today to ubuntu 13.04 and so far so
good. I havent done a ton of reboots to thoroughly test but previously
it only took a couple tries. I will be right back to report if it
happens again.

[Bug 978891] Re: ubuntu 12.04 doesn't boot when usb device plugged in (except usb mouse)

2013-04-29 Thread James D.
I have this same problem with raring 13.04 latest kernel and all
updates, AMD 13.4 proprietary video drivers.

When my logitech USB wireless mouse is plugged into the regular USB 2
port on my HP DV6 envy notebook ubuntu hangs at boot with a black screen
and the cpu fan goes faster, assuming theres a runaway process using
more CPU or some kind of hang...

this is the driver... i have not tried with a usb disk drive attached
yet

[Bug 967410] Re: Windows clients cannot connect to shared printers

2012-11-01 Thread James D. Robinson
Hi to whom it may concern,

At the top of this posting, it states that this bug affects 40 people
but judging by the number of google references and comments on the
Ubuntu Forums, it affects a great deal than 40. I am referring to the
bug where one seems to be unable, to set up a printer attached to a
12.04 server. You see the following error message.

Windows cannot connect to the printer. Either the printer name was
typed incorrectly or the specified printer has lost its connection to
the server.

I had this problem on a new server that I had created using Xubuntu
12.04 and which was attached to various windows PCs. Most of these, are
running XP Pro. I do not have the problem on a Xubuntu 10.04 server
which is attached to the same XP Pro PCs.

The Printer would work locally from the server using USB and another
printer of the same type was setup directly on the LAN. This lead, in-
fact, to one additional problem. See later.

I eventually managed eventually to get it to work by setting up from the
Windows PC to my server using the semi manual approach, of using the
syntax

http://192.168.123.98:631/printers/Brother-HL-2270DW-series where
192.168.123.98 is the server address.

Whereas the original printer which was on the Lan, had been set -up
under windows as a port name of

BRN001BA97BC2BB

And this was automatically found on the Windows PC's Whereas on the
12.04 Xubuntu server it would not find it so it had to set-up manually
as

ipp://192.168.123.52/ ie it's address on the LAN and that seems to be CUPS
error.
This printer uses a name of Brother-HL-2270DW_series

NB the slight difference in the name between the DW and series one is an
underscore and the other is a hyphen. This was the cause of a few
unsuccessful attempts of getting it to work!!!

CUPS was setting up slightly different IDs as seen on the jobs page
(CUPS) and show all jobs..

Best Wishes
Jim

[Bug 748004] Re: system becomes very slow after suspend/resume

2012-02-13 Thread James D
I think ViktigLemma hit on this, but I installed xscreensaver, and told
my Ubuntu 11.10 to never suspend. Now the computer responds the way I
expect. It's just on me to turn off my monitor when I'm done for the
day..not a big deal. Well worth it to have my computer function
correctly 100% of the time.

This is an AWFUL bug.

[Bug 669934] [NEW] libvirt, KVM unable to set maxmem

2010-11-02 Thread james d
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

In my custom python scripts using libvirt python module and using the
virsh I can't set max memory size, yet in virt-manager it 'appears' to
work..

virsh # setmaxmem AVIRTUALBOX 786000

I guess to reproduce just attempt to setmaxmem of a virtual machine as
above.

Lorents,

I believe that this bug has expired. Bryce Harrington stated that
anyone who experiences this problem should file a new bug report running
ubuntu-bug xorg from the terminal (See post #8). Also, if it isn't
too much trouble I'd like to see if the process I listed in post #7
produces a crash for you. When you file your new bug, please post a
link to in here so that I can find it and subscribe to it. Thank you.

netbook-launcher disappeared after a freeze/crash/REISUB, leaving a go-

Creating a second user account produced the same behavior (so it's not

(/var/crash is empty).

[Bug 379228] Re: screen starts flashing and freezes or crashes X

2009-11-05 Thread James D. Hasselman
Ubuntu Version: 9.10
Architecture: 64-bit
Graphics Card: GeForce 8600 GT
Driver Version: 185.18.36

I first noticed this bug after installing Ubuntu 9.10. Upon booting for
the first time Ubuntu recommended that I install the NVIDIA graphics
driver in order to take full advantage of my graphics card. I have a
similar experience with this bug and I shall provide you a list of steps
that you can take to reproduce it.

What I expected:
When I release the mouse under a black notification box, the window should
remain transparent until I move the mouse away. Then the system should
continue to function normally.

What happened:
Well, I was dragging an application window around my desktop and I happened to
release it while the mouse was under one of the black notification windows and
my screen began to flash violently and eventually my system locked up
completely forcing me to do a hard reboot.

Steps to reproduce:
1. System - Administration - Hardware Drivers
2. Install/Activate NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version 185)
3. Reboot
4. System - Preferences - Appearance
5. Go to the Visual Effects tab and click Extra
6. Close the Appearance window
7. Open an application or folder of your choice. It doesn't matter what it
is, the point is that you need a window which can be dragged
8. Do something that causes a notification window to appear. I had my buddy
IM me.
9. When the notification window pops up grab a window and drag it until the
mouse hand icon is under the notification window. The notification window
should become transparent at this point.
10. Release the window
11. Close your eyes if you have a seizure disorder (not joking)

I would provide you with log files, but none of them seem to have
anything useful. If you would like them anyway please let me know and I
will provide them.

Temporary Fix:
Disabling desktop effects altogether eliminates this problem since there is no
way to make a notification window turn transparent.

[Bug 326800] Re: unresponsive when Select Best Server button is clicked

2009-10-25 Thread James D. Hasselman
I can reproduce this bug as well. Clicking Select Best Server in the
Choose a Download Server dialog causes all of synaptic to hang up. I
can close the both the Software Sources and Choose a Download Server
dialog via Force Quit but synaptic hangs indefinitely and must be
closed from the terminal by running sudo kill -9 ... running ps -e
shows a defunct gpg process and a defunct ssh process both of which
can be terminated by running sudo kill -9 ... on the software-proper
process. Until a fix is committed if this happens to you and you aren't
sure how to kill the defunct processes please refer to the following
article http://kenno.wordpress.com/2007/04/04/how-to-kill-defunct-
process/

Now for some quick information about my system:

Architecture: amd64
Distribution: Ubuntu 9.04 (64-bit)

I hope this information is helpful. If you need any additional
information I am more than willing to provide it.

[Bug 373862] [NEW] jaunty release is broken, replaced with debian.lenny release and it works

2009-05-08 Thread James D. Freels
Public bug reported:

1) lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 9.04
Release:9.04

2) amanda-client:
  Installed: 1:2.5.2p1-4
  Candidate: 1:2.5.2p1-4
  Version table:
 1:2.5.2p1-4 0
500 http://mirror.cc.vt.edu jaunty/universe Packages
 *** 1:2.5.2p1-4 0
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
3) I expected amanda-client to provide backups to the amanda-server as normal
and as it has for years on this computer.

4) what happened instead

Right after I upgraded to jaunty from intrepid this bug appeared. I
have several debian and ubuntu machines and have isolated the problem to
the jaunty amanda package. Even though the version is the same between
jaunty and debian/lenny at 2.5.2p1-4, apparently the packaging is
different because the lenny version works and the jaunty does not. The
sympton is that when the jaunty client is dumping to the amanda tape
server, is times out and fails. It happens every time. This makes
amanda from jaunty unusable as a client.

As a workaround, I installed the debian/lenny bindary debs and held the
packages until this bug is corrected.

[Bug 363937] Re: [Jaunty RC] alarm-clock package should be removed

2009-04-28 Thread James D. Hasselman
confirmed, from manually tracing the code via print statements I have
determined that the problem occurs in MainClass.py on line 159
(approximately) with a call to gtk.main(). X hangs indefinitely and the
call to gtk.main() never returns. The only way to kill the program is
to use Ctrl+Alt+F(1, 2, or 3) and killall alarm-clock. I have heard
varying assertions about the source of the problem some blaming python,
others pygtk, and still others believe it is alarm clock itself. I ran
a diff against MainClass.py from 0.9.18-3 and MainClass.py from 0.9.11.2
(on mint) and I came up with around 1500 lines. I'm not quite sure what
to do about this although I hope a developer is watching this bug.
Booting mint every night before I go to bed so that I have an alarm
clock is getting old fast.

I'm attaching the file containing the diffs, hope it helps

[Bug 354313] [NEW] Music hover plays white noise

2009-04-03 Thread James D. Hasselman
Public bug reported:

I just installed the 64bit Jaunty Beta today and I found a problem with
sound playback. When I hover over my music files in nautilus, sometimes
white noise (static) plays instead of music. The white noise usually
plays for about 2 seconds before playback halts completely. This is
reproducible but it appears to happen randomly. I will update this when
I figure out how to reproduce this behavior consistently.

[Bug 226022] [NEW] Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron - System locks up when returning from standby

2008-05-03 Thread James D. Hasselman
Public bug reported:

Hi,
I have noticed a problem with Hardy Heron. I am not sure exactly how to
describe this problem, but I will do my best. I apologize in advance if I am
not clear. This problem seems to occur whenever I bring my system back up
after a long standby period. The OS boots up fine and I can log in, but I
cannot start any of my applications. For example, earlier today I was trying
to check my bank account balance so I tried to open up firefox. The system
appeared to be active for a few seconds but firefox never started. I looked in
the system monitor and found firefox listed under the process tab and its
status said sleeping. I tried to start firefox a second time and once again
there was another entry in the system monitor, but its status also said
sleeping. I ended both processes and attempted to start firefox again but the
same thing happened. The same problem also occurred with the evolution mail
program. I was also unable to log out or shutdown the machine. It seems that
any processes started prior to the long standby period continue to function,
but no new processes can be started.

[Bug 54897] Re: SCSI / AIC7xxx / Tape Library Problem

2006-11-26 Thread James D. Freels
Hello. I think this bug is similar, if not identical, to a long-
standing bug I have reported in the debian bug reports, then later in
the kernel bug reports. Please take a look here:

http://bugme.osdl.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5268

Perhaps if someone other than myself can verify this bug and demonstrate
a 2nd, totally unrelated computer, has the same problem, it will gain a
little priority and get fixed. Presently, I have just quite using this
tape drive and using the later kernels since I have another tape drive
that is doing the backups. But, I would like to gain this tape drive
back. It worked fine under 2.6.12.6 and earlier.

[Bug 71255] the apparent amanda bug was caused by tar !

2006-11-13 Thread James D. Freels
Having isolated the problem, I downgraded the tar package from
v1.15.91-2 normally installed with Ubuntu/Edgy to the older v1.14-2.2
that is installed with the current Debian/Sarge/Stable. This, indeed,
fixed the problem. So, should I file a tar bug report ?

Re: [Bug 71255] Re: Edgy versions are in compatible with older version

2006-11-12 Thread James D. Freels
I have now confirmed this bug to exist on a second Ubuntu/Edgy system
which is my home machine. The home machine is an amanda server client
and serves only itself. I have had these errors and only level 0
backups since the upgrade to edgy on this machine.

Home machine errors started on 10-22

Work machine errors started about 10-26 (I upgraded to edgy on the work
machine after the home machine upgrade went OK)

I should have paid closer attention. These amanda problems have existed
since the edgy upgrade.

This may be related to bug #32330. I am not sure, but I will try to
find out.

[Bug 71255] Edgy versions are in compatible with older version

2006-11-10 Thread James D. Freels
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: amanda-client

After I upgraded to Edgy from Dapper, the amanda client on my desktop
stopped backing up to the amanda server on a Debian/Sarge/Stable system.
The remote server system is running version 2.4.4p3 of amanda whereas
this version on my desktop is at v2.5.0p2. I fixed the problem by
installing the Debian/Sarge/Stable packages onto my Ubuntu/Edgy system

Re: [Bug 68904] Re: upstart causes hang on boot

2006-11-01 Thread James D. Freels
Dear Scott et al.:

Adding the CONFIG_INOTIFY flag to my kernel fixed this problem.
Wonderful. upstart and dependent packages are now install on my system.

This leads to another question. Perhaps I am the only one of millions
of Unbuntu/Edgy users who likes to build my own kernel, but this seems
incredible to me. I like a lean kernel with only what is necessary
and only the proprietary drivers loaded as drivers (nvidia, vmware). I
have been maintaining my linux systems for years this way long before
Ubuntu was even thought of. I would like to continue to do this. I
have two Ubuntu desktops and 3 Debian/stable servers I maintain in this
fashion.

Exclusive of the hardware drivers required, is there a list of kernel
flag options that Ubuntu expects to be active that I can reference to
make sure I am using all that Ubuntu has to offer ? (such as this one
INOTIFY ?)

Thanks for you help ! It is fixed and this bug can be removed.

Re: [Bug 68904] Re: /sbin/init of upstart is different from /sbin/init of sysvinit and causes hang on boot

2006-10-30 Thread James D. Freels
Scott,

I tried this as you suggested. This basically just undoes what I had to
do to fix the problem. So, when I undid things (added back the packages
I deleted and then deleted sysvinit), then it caused the system to
behave the same way. The --debug switch gave me no information
when /sbin/init runs and it hung the system again. So, I put the system
back the way it was (replacing upstart et. al., with sysvinit) and
rebooted so I can send you this message. I also checked the log files
in /var/log and nothing there from the --debug output either.

For your information, I also run a custom kernel at v2.6.18.1.
The .config for that kernel is attached.

[Bug 68904] /sbin/init of upstart is different from /sbin/init of sysvinit and causes hang on boot

2006-10-28 Thread James D. Freels
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: upstart

I discovered this bug when upgrading from Dapper to Edgy. The upgraded
system contained upstart and dependent packages ubuntu-minimal, upstart-
compat-sysv, startup-tasks, system-services, upstart-logd. After
upgrading, I rebooted and the system hang at the message Freeing unused
kernel memory: 204K freed. After much searching on the web for the
cause of the problem, I discovered that a corrupt /sbin/init could be
the cause, and if I issued init=/bin/sh at the kernel prompt at boot
time, I could verify this; which I did.

My system at home was similarly upgraded from Dapper to Edgy. However,
for some reasson, it was installed with sysvinit and NOT upstart and
dependent packages. Since my home system did not need upstart and
dependent packages to work properly, I realized I could delete them from
my work machine and then install sysvinit instead. So, I booted up
under the Dapper live CD (don't have an Edby CD yet) and performed this
task after copying the /sbin/init file and the sysvinit*.deb file from
my home machine.

My system now boots properly without upstart. The size of the
/sbin/init file in upstart is different from sysvinit, so they ARE
different. Why it does not work in upstart for my system is a puzzle I
do not care to solve further, since I must now use my system for
working.

[Bug 50587] Re: [Bug 50587] Re: wrong owner on /etc/shadow

2006-08-21 Thread James D. Freels
Due to my shortcomings in record-keeping of this bug and how I was led
to file it, I too cannot see any good reason to pursue this further. I
agree with you to clear the bug report as user error.

Also, I will try to be less confrontational and I am very grateful for
Ubuntu and all your good help.

Perhaps I was looking at some of the old bug reports filed on the Debian
side which confirmed my concern for this bug.

 on a fresh install?

What exactly do you want us to do here? No one else has been able to
reproduce the bug, and you haven't been giving us any suggestions as to
where your differences are coming from. I'm strongly inclined to chalk
it up to user error unless you show us that this happens on a clean
install for you. Otherwise, the logical conclusion is that this is
happening because of something you installed or some later update. In
which case it would be helpful to track down if it came from Ubuntu.

Also, please be a little less confrontational. We are not chastising
you for daring to file a bug, we are just trying to understand what
 exactly is going on here.

I beg your pardon, I did respond and was promptly chastised for doing
so. Inserted is my last correspondence offering whatever help you may
want to fix the problem. The user forums are full of messages relating
to this problem if you care to take a look. I just happened to be the
only one who would dare to file a bug. Who would dare find a bug ?

I of source have no control of when you do or do not call a bug a bug.
All I can do is report what happened.

is still root:shadow. We weren't trying to tell you that your bug

[Bug 50587] wrong owner on /etc/shadow

2006-06-21 Thread James D. Freels
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: passwd

this bug is identical to bug #166793 of the Debian tracking system and
was corrected at 4.0.13-1 of Debian. The version in Dapper is
4.0.13-7ubuntu3, however it still lingers. The version in
Debian/Testing is now 4.0.15 and the version in Debian/Unstable is
4.0.16. The version in Debian/Stable is 4.0.3 (much older).

Presently, the owner of /etc/shadow is set to root.root each time the
system is booted. The correct ownership should be root.shadow. Without
the correct ownership, screensavers such as kscreensaver will not allow
for a locked screen to open back up (password check fails).

I have corrected the problem by manually changing the ownership of the
//etc/shadow file to root.shadow at the console (Ctrl-Alt-F1).

I also am trying a 4.0.16 build from unstable to see if it works after a
reboot.
