[Bug 1794015] Re: variety doesn't start

2019-09-02 Thread James Lu
Can you confirm that an autostart file was correctly created at
~/.config/autostart/variety.desktop and that it's enabled in your
session settings? The CalledProcessError bit is fixed in 0.7.2-1 (as
well as in the nightly builds), but shouldn't actually be related to
this because it doesn't cause Variety to exit.

Attaching ~/.config/variety/variety.log and the full console output when
you run Variety at the command line may also be helpful.

[Bug 1817761] Re: variety reports a missing dependency and exits

2019-09-02 Thread James Lu
It looks like you have some clashing dependencies:
https://github.com/urllib3/urllib3/issues/1456

If you installed them using pip, try 'pip install -U requests urllib3'
to fetch the latest versions.

Unfortunately this kind of issue is common when mixing dependencies from
apt and pip. Because the errors come from one of our dependency
libraries, there's not much we can do on Variety's end to fix them.

[Bug 1770187] Re: Versions under 0.6.8 freeze on "Would you like to register?" screen

2018-09-30 Thread James Lu
In a perfect world yes, updates could be delivered in a timely fashion
and we wouldn't suffer from any issues. But the SRU process is long[1],
and I'm not convinced that trying to push a massive shift from Python 2
-> 3 would be appropriate.

Last time there was the issue of nobody verifying the SRU targeting
xenial[2], which would've fixed a bunch of bugs[3][4]! Ironically the
SRU page *discourages* uploaders from doing the verification process
themselves, but I wonder if that would've been the only option to
actually get something done.

I have not had a pleasant experience pushing SRUs, so my interest in
working on another one alone is low. And this is exacerbated by how the
most of _my_ interest is towards Debian and not Ubuntu directly.
(There's only so much time and energy I have, sorry.)

Part of the solution to this bug is actually figuring out what's causing
it. Trying to hide it in a new upstream release is very much opaque to
the verifiers, and I don't think they'd appreciate that.

[Bug 1770187] Re: Versions under 0.6.8 freeze on "Would you like to register?" screen

2018-07-10 Thread James Lu
I can confirm this under Ubuntu 18.04 and 0.6.7-1. There seems to be
sporadic freezes on startup, and a reproducible one on shutdown
(eventually Variety has to be force killed by a watchdog thread)

This seems to have been fixed in 0.6.8 and later by removing all the
vrty.org-related code, so I'm suspecting that the issue lies in that (is
some thread blocking on failure?). I have *not* been able to isolate the
freeze reason though, and the 0.6.8 "fix" removing a large portion of
code is probably too invasive to backport to a stable release[1][2].

[Bug 1732293] Re: Deepin compatibility

2018-03-26 Thread James Lu
Hi,

Rereading the context and Peter's response I think that this weird
behaviour should really be fixed in Deepin instead of worked around in
Variety. Your best bet is probably to use a specific folder for storing
download images and automatically remove ~/Pictures/Wallpapers with a
cronjob or something.

2018-01-19 Thread James Lu
Okay, fwiw the GitHub issue is much less confusing than this one. I find
Deepin's behaviour on this part quite silly, so I think a workaround
would be acceptable. We should be careful not to delete more than we
mean to though, in case ~/Pictures/Wallpapers is being used to store
other files too.

[Bug 1552179] Re: Variety segfaults on libexiv/std::_Rb_tree on autostart, but not when started manually

2017-10-13 Thread James Lu
Hi everyone,

A cursory glance of the backtrace logs points to libexiv2 being the
issue. Unfortunately, exiv2's maintainer seems overwhelmed or unwilling
to harden the library, and thus it has many documented issues handling
malformed data. Nevertheless, many programs depend on it either directly
or transitively via wrappers - in this case, Variety is using it via
GExiv2. https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=785547 and
http://dev.exiv2.org/issues/1248 have more background on the issue.

For us to fix these problems would likely involve either porting to a
different EXIF framework (Python-native examples: [1][2]), or dropping
our use of EXIF metadata entirely[3].

[Bug 673251] Re: thumbnails do not display in nautilus trash

2017-08-08 Thread James Lu
Hi,

As the new upstream maintainer, I'm going to mark this as wontfix
because Trash support relies on virtual paths (i.e. trash:///) that
simply can't be accessed from a simple shell script. Specifically,
adding support for this would require integration with gvfs, which
complicates the code for little gain.

Regarding verification, is there anyone in the verification team I

[Bug 1494992] Re: 100% CPU when the History or Wallpaper Selector panels are open

2017-07-07 Thread James Lu
** Also affects: variety (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Changed in: variety (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Fix Released

** Description changed:

  Version:0.5.4
  DE:Cinnamon 2.6.13
  OS:Linux Mint 17.2

When you chnage the backgroud in the history panel or scroll in it the CPU
utilisation goes up to 100% and stay there.
I need to close the panel and reopen it to restore the utilisation back to
normal.
The problem seem also to be in the download history panel and the selection
of background too.
+
+
+
+ Below is the SRU information by James Lu
+ (https://launchpad.net/~tacocat)
+
+ [Impact]
+
+ * The autoscroll feature in Variety's Wallpaper Selector dialog before
+ commit https://bazaar.launchpad.net/~variety/variety/trunk/revision/592
+ consumes excessive amounts of CPU after leaving the autoscroll area.
+ This affects both the "History" and "Wallpaper Selector" options found
+ in Variety's menu.
+
+ * Although this bug doesn't cause any serious damage, pegging a
+ machine's CPU is quite annoying and users will notice whirring fans and
+ reduced battery life as a result.
+
+ * The proposed fix adds a missing line to clear the autoscroll state
+ when leaving the wallpaper selector. This way, the code in
+ _autoscroll_thread() (which polls for whether the mouse is over the
+ wallpaper selector) doesn't instantly succeed and create an infinite
+ loop.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ 1) Select one or more wallpaper sources so that in the Wallpaper
+ Selector, scrolling is needed to show all items.
+
+ 2) Open the wallpaper selector, either by focusing on a wallpaper
+ source in the preferences dialog, or by choosing the "Wallpaper
+ Selector" option in Variety's tray menu.
+
+ 3) Move the mouse over any of the images in the wallpaper selector.
+
+ 4) Move the mouse away from the wallpaper selector. A CPU spike in Variety
should appear now.
+- Note that this CPU spike is different from any initial CPU spikes when
the wallpaper selector first opens, as that is due to Variety generating all
the thumbnails on the spot. The CPU spike mentioned in this bug lasts as long
as the wallpaper selector is open and the mouse is not over it, while the
initial spikes are temporary (they always last less than 5 seconds for me)
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ * This patch affects the autoscroll portion of the wallpaper selector.
+ Should this patch be erroneous, some symptoms could include autoscroll
+ or the entire wallpaper selector not working entirely.
+
+ * Syntax or variable name errors will, on the other hand, raise Python
+ exceptions and possibly cause Variety to fail to start entirely.
+
+ * The original patch fixing this bug was included in Debian release
+ 0.6.3-5, which has been in Debian stretch for about 2 months and artful
+ for a similar time (I don't remember the exact date of the relevant
+ sync). No new bugs related to this issue have been opened since in
+ Debian and Ubuntu.

[Bug 1603299] Re: Crash with latest html5lib

2017-05-18 Thread James Lu
I realize this bug doesn't impact any version of html5lib officially in
xenial. However, for whatever reason if a user decides to install a
newer version of html5lib (e.g. via pip), bs4 will break as a side
effect and possibly render other programs unusable.

AFAIK it's 'pip install html5lib' (to get html5lib >= 0.) and
then trying to import bs4 by any means that triggers the issue.

[Bug 1636389] Re: Remove broken Panoramio source

2017-04-17 Thread James Lu
The attached patch is modified from the one from Arch Linux, and
migrates away from existing Panoramio sources, as well as removing the
menu option. However, more cleanup is probably needed to completely
remove Panoramio, as no (invasive) code removal is done here.

** Summary changed:

- Panoramio sources no longer work (needs migration to Google Maps)
+ Remove broken Panoramio source

** Changed in: variety
   Status: Won't Fix => Triaged

** Patch added: "Disable Panoramio sources, which no longer wor"

[Bug 1628074] Re: Wallpapers.net doesn't work as source of wallpapers

2017-03-24 Thread James Lu
I agree that maintaining website scraping is difficult and that
constantly backporting changes to older releases isn't ideal. So, I am
looking forward to a new release where difficult to maintain sources are
dropped once and for all. Thanks for all the feedback everyone :)

[Bug 1628074] Re: Wallpapers.net doesn't work as source of wallpapers

2017-03-23 Thread James Lu
I agree and disagree with only patching out the UI elements: while it's
possible to prevent adding new Wallpapers.net sources by removing it
from the GUI, doing so doesn't remove broken sources that may already
exist in a user's config. New code may have to be introduced instead to
properly migrate away from dead sources, while removal due to sources no
longer present in Variety's supported list are automatically removed.

I will admit that I'm not sure whether auto-removal of missing sources
is intentional or a side-effect of how Variety's downloader system works
- it relies on exception handling, though that isn't exactly discouraged
in Python. :) Maybe Peter can comment on this.

[Bug 1598298] Re: Variety menu shows up in left corner, instead of under the icon

2017-03-20 Thread James Lu
** Description changed:

Every time I click the Variety icon in the Mate panel, it shows the menu
in the far left corner. It's been this way for several weeks now. I
think it may have something to do with gtk 3.20. I'm using ArchLinux,
and this behavior started about the time gtk 3.20 got pushed out.

This error shows up when running Variety in verbose log mode and clicking the
icon:
TypeError: pos() takes exactly 2 arguments (4 given)

  I also attached the log.

ArchLinux (x64, rolling), Linux desktop 4.6.3-1-ck
  Variety 6.0
  gtk 3.20
  mate 1.12
+
+
+ Below is the SRU template (James Lu):
+
+ [Impact]
+
+ With newer versions of GTK+ / python-gi, some menus in Variety are
+ showing up in the top left corner of the screen, instead of where the
+ mouse clicks. Although this has no immediate impact on the menus'
+ functionality, this bug is very noticeable when triggered and has been
+ reported numerous times.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ A fair bit of menus are affected by this bug, including:
+
+ * The menu that opens when clicking the "Add" button in Variety
+ Preferences->General
+
+ * The menu when right clicking a picture in the Wallpaper Selector
+
+ * Some reporters have stated that this affects the menu that pops up
+ from the Variety tray icon, but I haven't been able to reproduce this.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ I think the regression potential here is low, but any potential syntax
+ errors or variable typos could break menus or cause the program to not
+ start at all.
+
+ Upstream suggests testing the following in particular:
+ - Add and Remove buttons in Preferences should popup the menu exactly below
the pressed button (like a dropdown).
+ - Thumbs window's right-click menu should popup at mouse position (e.g.
History, Wallpaper Selector)
+ - Indicator should work both when using the indicator API (e.g. under Unity,
or under Gnome with AppIndicator support extension installed -
https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/615/appindicator-support/), as well as
when using the StatusIcon API (e.g. under Gnome with no appindicator support).
+
+ Also, other things I haven't tried include multi-monitor support, and
+ menus on DEs other than Cinnamon and Xfce.
+
+ [Other Info]
+
+ Some time between Ubuntu 14.04 and 16.04 (from what I can gather from
+ https://bugs.launchpad.net/variety/+bug/1598298/comments/23), the
+ arguments for https://lazka.github.io/pgi-
+ docs/#Gtk-3.0/callbacks.html#Gtk.MenuPositionFunc changed in a breaking
+ manner. More specifically, what used to pass 2 arguments now passes 4.
+ Part of this fix makes the relevant functions accept a variable amount
+ of arguments, so that it should be compatible with all system versions.
+
+ The other half of the fix is for the Variety indicator, and replaces a
+ custom MenuPositionFunc using the old argument set with a static
+ Gtk.StatusIcon.position_menu.

[Bug 1628074] Re: Wallpapers.net doesn't work as source of wallpapers

2017-03-20 Thread James Lu
** Description changed:

The listed source of wallpapers (http://wallpapers.net/nature-desktop-

  doesn't work either.

  ProblemType: Bug
  DistroRelease: Ubuntu 16.04

(20160420.1)
  PackageArchitecture: all
  SourcePackage: variety
UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install)
+
+
+ Below is the SRU template (James Lu):
+
+ [Impact]
+
+ Variety support for Wallpapers.net no longer works because the site has since
changed its layout.
+ Newer versions of Variety have dropped support for this source, and the SRU
patch below backports this removal in Xenial.
+
+ Per the bug nomination for Xenial and Section 2.1 of
+ https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates#Other_safe_cases (A library
+ for a web service needs to be updated for changes to the web server
+ API), I believe this fix is worthwhile in improving user experience and
+ unlikely to cause serious regressions.
+
+ * An explanation of the effects of the bug on users and
+
+ * justification for backporting the fix to the stable release.
+
+ * In addition, it is helpful, but not required, to include an
+explanation of how the upload fixes this bug.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ * In the Images list of Variety's preferences page, attempting to select
+ Wallpapers.net ("wn") as a wallpaper source causes a silent failure as
+ no wallpapers are found.
+
+ * Attempting to add any Wallpapers.net category (e.g.
+ http://www.wallpapers.net/wallpapers/nature) using the
+ Preferences->General->Add button fails with a "Could not find wallpapers
+ there" error.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ From my testing, when this patch is applied, all previous sources using
+ Wallpapers.net are removed (this actually raises a "Unknown source"
+ error in the console, which leads to automatic removal). This makes it
+ possible to have a variety configuration with no wallpaper sources left
+ after an upgrade, but this does not appear to be fatal and can be
+ quickly fixed through the preferences page.
+
+ Some more regression potential:
+ - This patch removes a substantial amount of code, so it's possible that
there are there are modules with lingering dependencies on the removed
Wallpapers.net code. Should this be true, that code will fail to import and
potentially cause Variety to crash on start.
+ - Part of the upstream patch removes python-lxml as a dependency, which I've
done in my packaging as well. As far as I can tell (from the results of "grep
lxml **/*.py"), variety/WallpapersNetDownloader.py was the only module in
Variety to use lxml, and this is removed by the patch. However, if this
assumption is wrong, a missing module will cause Variety to fail to start.
+ - It may be worth checking how other features of Variety (e.g. filters) are
affected by the potential removal of all Wallpaper sources (though this can be
manually done by just deselecting everything in Preferences). One note is that
sync is currently broken regardless of this commit due to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/variety/+bug/1635912, which is yet to be fixed
upstream.
+
+ [Other Info]
+
+ The patch I'm submitting for this bug is slightly modified from the
+ upstream commit, and I've removed conflicting edits to the package
+ description (debian/control) and the autogenerated po/variety.pot file.

Ubuntu 11.04 has been EOL since 2012.

Hmm, I have MATE 1.14 and GTK+ 3.22 on Debian Testing/Unstable, and I
can't reproduce the issue. Could it be that this is specific to GTK+
3.20 and fixed later on?

2016-10-04 Thread James Lu
Stable update patches usually have to be minimal and only address
important issues (this counts per section 2.1 I guess):
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates

So unfortunately, introducing a new version is probably not possible.

[Bug 1628561] Re: package variety 0.6.0-1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed pre-removal script returned error exit status 1

2016-10-04 Thread James Lu
Something looks wrong with your Python installation. From
DpkgTerminalLog.txt:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/lib/python2.7/site.py", line 68, in

  File "/usr/lib/python2.7/os.py", line 49, in

  File "/usr/lib/python2.7/posixpath.py", line 1

SyntaxError: invalid syntax

This should not happen unless some random junk got into the posixpath
library. Try reinstalling libpython2.7-minimal, which provides that
library: apt-get --reinstall libpython2.7-minimal
