[Bug 853045] Re: On/off button no longer goes red to indicate that a restart is necessary

2011-10-08 Thread James Pursey
Exactly the same thing happened on my other computer this morning. I
noticed that I wasn't prompted to reboot the computer after a new kernel
was installed, which I thought a bit odd. But when I started the
Software center the button turned red. I think this is another bug so
I'll start a new bug report.

[Bug 870484] [NEW] Update notifier doesn't properly prompt when restarts are necessary

2011-10-08 Thread James Pursey
Public bug reported:

I have experienced this bug on two different computers. I have noticed
that when a system restart is necessary the user isn't notified until
the software center is launched. This morning a new kernel was
installed, and I thought it strange that I wasn't prompted to restart
the computer. However, the on/off button turned red the instant the
software center started. I had the same issue yesterday on a different
computer.

[Bug 853045] Re: On/off button no longer goes red to indicate that a restart is necessary

2011-10-07 Thread James Pursey
The on/off button changed colour to red today to indicate a system
restart was nessary. It's much clearer now - however what was strange
was that I did the update in the morning and the button only changed
several hours later, at the very moment I launched the Ubuntu Software
center. I don't know if it's normal behaviour or not.

[Bug 863006] [NEW] Display problems after updates

2011-09-30 Thread James Pursey
Public bug reported:

Hi

After this morning's extensive updates I rebooted my computer and found
that X seems to now have crashed on this system. I have included a
photograph as an attachment. I then logged in and logged out and the
problem remained, although slightly more psychedelic this time! (2nd
photo). Just to be sure, I rebooted again and the display was exactly
the same as in the first photo. Another thing of note is that the
network icon shows there to be no Internet connection whereas there is
one (I don't know if this is a separate issue.

More information that may help you with the analysis. If an application
is not full-screen, a trace of it remains on the screen when it's
closed; if an application that is dragged around the screen, it leaves
traces as in the photo attached here:

[Bug 853061] [NEW] New Open with in right click dialogue box does not allow custom commands

2011-09-18 Thread James Pursey
Public bug reported:

Hi

I dnn't know if this is a bug or a feature request. But it seems to me to be an
oversight, and so I'm posting it as a bug.
I have found the new Open with... option when right clicking a program has
become too watered down, to the point that it sometimes becomes useless. In
11.10 there is the new Find applications online option. Fair enough, this is
a feature that was already incorporated in Windows XP and it might be time to
have it in Ubuntu. The trouble is, though, that if the online search is
unfruitful, and the application doesn't appear in the list when pressing the
button Show other applications it is now not possible for the average person
to association an executable programme with an application. For example, I have
installed the Atari800 emulator. If I download a game, right click the game and
look for Atari800 in the list of applications, I do not find it: and the Find
applications online function doesnt find any programme to run with it either.
The trouble is that there is no longer a Launch custom command option, nor
the possibility of navigating to the application with Nautilus and clicking on
the application once found.

[Bug 843821] [NEW] Media player cannot be closed

2011-09-07 Thread James Pursey
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I have found that the libreoffice media player cannot be closed once opened.
Usually, there is no close button on the top panel. Closing Libreoffice does
not correct this issue - when the application is launched again, the media
player opens with it and cannot be closed. Possible steps to verify this bug:
Open the media player (for example, press the Gallery button, then choose
Sounds, then double click any sound file.
The media player should then open. It cannot be closed.
Close Libreoffice, then re-open
LibreOffice opens with media media player which still cannot be closed.

Update: eventually managed to close it. I think the trick is to scale
the two windows, which makes the button appear in the media player. At
first this button won't operate, but when I dragged the window to the

[Bug 761723] Re: Computer unbootable after Natty install

2011-05-07 Thread James Pursey
Reinstalled Natty this morning. Same problems. Setting radeonmodest=0
doesn't help and it is impossible to boot into a text console - even
recovery mode freezes with a black screen of death. I chrooted and
modified the sources.list file as suggested in the tutorial and this
time I was able to do an apt-get update and upgrade without error.
However, I am unable to install the new kernel as I get dependency
errors. I've tried force upgrading but that doesn't work either. Here is
the relevant terminal output:

[Bug 761723] Re: Computer unbootable after Natty install

2011-05-07 Thread James Pursey
I did a dpkg --reconfigure -a
Then I tried dpkg -configure linux-image blah, blah

I can't go any further on this one un-aided, though. I'm not a developer
and this problem exceeds my level of competence by light years!

[Bug 761723] Re: Computer unbootable after Natty install

2011-05-03 Thread James Pursey
Hi

I've had to re-install Maverick on this machine as I use it at work. I'd
like to try the procedure you mention this weekend. Will this be
possible under Maverick? I mean, if I follow the procedure before I do
an update -d, will Natty install with the proposed kernel? If not, how
can I get this to work? As I said, I've already tried modifying
sources.list and then upgrading via chroot, but I couldn't get it to
work.

2011-05-02 Thread James Pursey
I second the above request. I tried installing the new kernel by
applying the ppa via chroot but it failed. I think I'll wait a few days
until the kernel is mainstreamed and do a reinstall then.

Tried again this morningm, with the newly released final released. I was
very disappointed to see that the problem remains. I wonder how many
first time Linux users will have this as their very first Ubuntu

Just tried again with the boot option acpi=off - same result.
Also, any attempt to boot into rescue mode results in a system freeze and a
black screen of death.

I've just tried again and I can report that everything seems to work

for a long period of time - but it's looking good.

[Bug 761723] [NEW] Computer unbootable after Natty install

2011-04-15 Thread James Pursey
Public bug reported:

Hi

After upgrading from Maverick to Natty, this machine (now running via a
Live CD) becomes unbootable. The boot process seems to start off OK, but
then finishes with an aubergine screen of death with a solid blue line
at the top (see attached photo). I have tried the uprgrade via both apt
and the live CD but the two methods fail in the same way. Trying to boot
via the fail safe mode also results in a system freeze (black screen of
death this time!)

[Bug 563878] Re: Ubuntu splashscreen big and ugly after installing ATI/nVidia proprietary graphics driver

2011-03-27 Thread James Pursey
I was the person who started this bug report nearly one year ago now. I
intended to alert the developers to the presence of a bug I thought might
affect my graphics card only. I didn't start it with the desire of creating a
rant page as seen in forums. I felt a bit awkward when I sent it off - I didn't
see how something that doesn't affect the security or stability of a system
could count as a bug at a time when developers had more important things to
look at. I preferred they put all their efforts into making the show-stopping
things work properly rather than concentrating too much of their time and
effort on purely visual things.
Whereas I agree that it'd be nice for this splashscreen to work soon, I'd
rather Unity functions properly the very day Natty comes out, or that Wayland
doesn't screw anything up in the next release, or that kernel vulnerabilities
are plugged up... When all that works, then's then time to concentrate on
making those few little moments when the computer starts up a visual treat.
Believe me I look forward to it, but let's get our priorities right.
Personally, I think this bug report has run its course. All the developers are
aware of this issue so maybe it's time to call it a day and close tit. I
personally will unsubscribe from my own bug report because I find nothing
constructive in these endless rants.

[Bug 698172] Re: Buttons blanked out in Scribus when using Unity

2011-03-16 Thread James Pursey
The problem concerned the global menu. For a while, the global menu
didn't work with qt applications and so Scribus was working fine. The
global menu seems to be working with Scribus now, and I can no longer
reproduce the bug. It seems to be resolved (for the moment at least).

steps indicated. Will disable wobbly windows and let you know if it

[Bug 729679] [NEW] Graphics freeze in Thunderbird

2011-03-05 Thread James Pursey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

Hi

I have just encoutered a very strange bug with Thunderbird. I can't tell
you the exact procedure to reproduce it, but basically I started
Thundird and the window opened as shown in the attached screenshot. Now,
whenever I open Thunderbird (I haven't restarted X yet) it opens in this
way. Clicking in the approximate place on the screen where the buttons
should be activates these functions (eg, clicking somewhere near the top
left of the screen will result in Thunderbird fetching the mail.).

[Bug 725911] Re: Logitech wireless mouse recognition variable

2011-03-02 Thread James Pursey
OK, just rebooted from cold and the mouse was recognized. I ran dmesg
again and this time I find the mouse:

[Bug 725911] Re: Logitech wireless mouse recognition variable

2011-03-01 Thread James Pursey
Hi,

Thanks for the detailed instructions. I think it's very unlikely that
it's the mouse that's at fault. I never experienced this issue in
Maverick but the very day I installed the alpha 1 version of Natty the
recognition of the mouse became on and off. After a few weeks' using
Alpha 1 my wife started getting shirty with me over all the bugs, so I
re-installed Maverick. I had no problems at all for the three of four
weeks that I was using Maverick again. Then I installed alpha 2 of Natty
and after the very first reboot the mouse wasn't seen.

What's strange is the erratic nature of the bug (assuming it is a bug of
course). This morning, for example, the mouse was recognized on first
boot (whereas usually a reboot is necessary when I first turn on the
computer). I rebooted and it was still recognized. Then I shut down and
booted from cold - the mouse wasn't recognized any more.

I've run dmesg as you say, and I include it all here in case there's
anything I've missed, but I don't find the Logitech wireless mouse. I
find the PS/2 port and I find a USB mouse which presumably is the Labtec
one that I have plugged in port in case the wireless one isn't
recognized. When I've finished this post I'll keep rebooting the
computer until the mouse is seen again and run dmesg again. Anyway,
here's the dmesg output for this boot:

[Bug 725911] [NEW] Logitech wireless mouse recognition variable

2011-02-27 Thread James Pursey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Hi,

I don't know if this is an Xorg problem, but I don't know where to put this
bug. Apologies in advance if this is the wrong place.
I have found that my Logitech mouse is not usually recognised on first boot.
Restarting the computer will sometimes clear the problem. I encountered the
same problem in Alpha 1 of Natty; but it seems to be worse in Alpha 2. In the
last release, the mouse was systematically not seen when first booted from
cold; however, a restart almost always cleared the problem. But with the Alpha
2 release I find that it is sometimes necessary to restart the computer several
times before the mouse is seen.

[Bug 698172] Re: Buttons blanked out in Scribus when using Unity

2011-02-26 Thread James Pursey
I have just installed the alpha-2 version of Natty and I cannot
reproduce this issue. However, I think this may be because the
application buttons are no longer appearing in the top panel as they did
in the alpha-1 release. It is possible that I re-encounter the problem
when the Scribus buttons reappear in the top panel, which I suppose they
will. I'll keep this release on my computer for as long as I am able (ie
until it becomes unusable) to see how things progress.

Sorry for the time it's taken for me to reply. I've since re-installed
Maverick because the bugs in Natty make it unusable right now. I'll re-
install it when I have some spare time and try to send you some screen
shots.

[Bug 699746] Re: Nvidia Twinview loads classic Ubuntu top panel

2011-02-10 Thread James Pursey
Hi

I have since re-installed 10.10 (as my wife got cross with me over using
a buggy distro!) but I hadn't ever logged into the classic desktop while
using Natty. I'd be more than happy to re-install 11.04 if you wish me
to provide any more information.

2011-01-17 Thread James Pursey

After the recent upgrades, the behaviour of applying Twinview has changed. The
Classic Gnome menu no longer appears, but funny things do still happen. I've
had the Ubuntu icon in the top left corner disappearing, the applets in the top
panel blanked out and the Kde top panel replacing the Gnome one.

[Bug 700913] [NEW] SD memory card won't mount twice

2011-01-09 Thread James Pursey
Public bug reported:

Hi

I hope this is the right procedure for re-opening a bug report as I have
already filed one on this in Lucid here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/569407

I was asked to re-open the bug report if I experienced this problem in
the next release - which I did. Now I am testing Natty and I notice that
the issue remains. Basically, if I put in my SD card, Ubuntu recognizes
it instantly and asks me if I want to open it with Shotwell. However, if
I remove the device and then put it back in, nothing happens: no icon
appears on the desktop, and no dialogue box asking me what I want to do
with the device appears either.

2011-01-07 Thread James Pursey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

Hi

After launching the Twinview function to enable multiple screens, the
top panel from Ubuntu classic, ie Applications, Places, System + the
Firefox launcher and any other launchers the user has put in the Ubuntu
Classic top panel are loaded into Unity. They are, however, totally
unusable - nothing happens when you press them. These buttons totally
obscure any buttons needed to operate any applications you may be using,
making them inoperable. Disabling Twinview does not make the Ubuntu
Classic top bar disappear - it is necessary to log out and log back in
to get the Unity panel to function properly again.

[Bug 698172] [NEW] Buttons blanked out in Scribus when using Unity

2011-01-06 Thread James Pursey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

Hi,

While testing Unity in Maverick I noticed that some key buttons
necessary to be able to use Scribus are blanked out, making Scribus
unuseable in this environment. The buttons are Item, Insert, Page, View
and Edit. I tried updating Scribus from 1.53.8 to Scribus-trunk, but the
problem remains. I then upgraded the computer from Maverick to Natty to
see if the problem remains in the latest version of unity, which it
does. Moreover, in Natty none of the buttons are visible at all unless I
click on the top panel.

[Bug 698172] Re: Buttons blanked out in Scribus when using Unity

2011-01-06 Thread James Pursey
Additional Information
I've been playing around with Scribus in Unity and have just found that it is
possible to get all the buttons to function, bar the Item button which still
doesn't work. The steps are as follows:
1) Open a document using Scribus
2) Maximize the Scribus window
3) Close Scribus
4) Open up the document again (this time the document opens directly with the
Window maximized).

It is now possible to use the buttons Insert, Page, View and Edit.

Conversely, the bug can be re-enabled using the following steps:
1) Resize the Window so that it is no longer maximized
2) Leave Scribus
3) Open the document again.

The document will open in a non-maximized window and the buttons are
once again in-operational.

[Bug 660010] Re: No 'safely remove' option is present in the unity menu when a usb disk is inserted

2010-11-30 Thread James Pursey
I was about to report a bug on this but will add my two penny's worth
here. I really, really like Unity. I think it's a great development, but
this issue makes using it difficult. One of the things I would really
miss from Gnome is the way that removable media like USB sticks and the
like are displayed as an icon on the desktop - and can be ejected safely
by right-clicking that icon. It's so easy and intuitive that I think it
would be a shame to ditch it. Could it be possible to reintegrate this
behaviour in Unity?

[Bug 563878] Re: Ubuntu splashscreen big and ugly after installing ATI/nVidia proprietary graphics driver

2010-05-19 Thread James Pursey
I am not so bothered about a splashscreen that lasts a couple of
seconds. However, I do have to agree that the number of bugs in Ubuntu
is starting to become an issue. Every time I install a new version of
Ubuntu, something breaks. I find Fedora more reliable, which is aimed as
an experimental distribution, than Ubuntu, which is supposedly Linux for
the masses. I even found Archlinux more reliable, which is a rolling
distro and so inclined to have problems - but at least they're sorted
out, and quickly too. While new versions of Ubuntu continue to be
released on a specified date, no matter what bugs are still to be
resolved, and then the security bugs are mended, leaving the others for
the next release, we're all going to run into problems that we're stuck
with until the next D-day - when we'll encounter a new set of problems.
I'm seriously considering looking at Linux Mint. It's based on Ubuntu,
but doesn't make new releases available until it's ready.

Thanks for the info. I'm not going to jump ship over this issue, but I
might if some of the other bugs that Mint doesn't suffer from don't get
sorted out in Ubuntu.

[Bug 563878] Re: Ubuntu splashscreen big and ugly after installing ATI graphics driver

2010-05-03 Thread James Pursey
Yes, I've come across the solution proposed in this blog too; but I
really don't like adding 6 seconds to the boot up time. As I said
before, the boot sequence is only on for a couple of seconds; I really
don't see the point of making a longer boot in order to make the boot
experience look good enough for you to forget that it's booting, if you
get my drift. I personally would prefer a really short boot time to get
to a working computer as quickly as possible. But what I really can't
stand is that black screen with a blinking cursor - it looks like the
computer has a serious problem - not a good first impression for a new
comer.

[Bug 563878] Re: Ubuntu splashscreen big and ugly after installing ATI graphics driver

2010-05-03 Thread James Pursey
Perso, my ATI graphics driver has lousy performance with the open source
driver. People who have graphics cards want to be able to use them.
Reverting to a lower quality driver to enjoy a boot splash that lasts
only a few seconds, thereby suffering a mediocre desktop experience
seems completely ridiculous in my opinion.

I've found a partial fix here:

http://news.softpedia.com/news/How-to-Fix-the-Big-and-Ugly-Plymouth-

But it doesn't work 100%. On one computer I have a black screen and a
flashing cursor for most of the boot process; on another machine I have
to stare at a Debian splash screen - where that came from I have no
idea.

[Bug 569407] [NEW] Memory cards won't mount twice

2010-04-24 Thread James Pursey
Public bug reported:

Hi

If I insert a memory card in the memory card reader, it is recognized
instantly. If, however, I remove this card (safely, of course!) and then
re-insert it, the card fails to mount. I have experienced this bug with
two different memory cards. Logging out and then logging back in doesn't
appear to work – it is necessary to reboot the computer to be able to
use the memory card a second time.

[Bug 563878] Re: Ubuntu splashscreen big and ugly after installing ATI graphics driver

2010-04-22 Thread James Pursey
I pretty well agree with that last comment. The splash-screen is hardly
a critical issue - much better concentrate on making Lucid as reliable
as possible. Of course, IKT is right that such a thing wouldn't happen
with Apple. But that's because Apple works on a relatively restricted
amount of hardware and each successive version is toiled over behind
closed doors for many months, even years, before release. All Linux
distros rely on their communities of users to give feedback about their
experiences on an unimaginable amount of hardware. It's amazing it works
as well as it does; and if we can recruit even more Linux users the
result will be truly awesome! Actually, as far as the boot experience
goes, I'm more worried about the black screen that appears for the most
part of the boot process than the splash-screen itself. I can imagine it
scaring quite a lot of people. I myself thought there was a problem when
I saw it. Then the splash screen came along and I knew everything was
fine. Didn't last long, though: maybe two seconds at the very most.
Could the splash-screen be made to appear almost immediately?

Sorry, I made a typo. I meant after a routine disk check.

2009-11-12 Thread James Pursey
One more update. What I reported in my last comment was repeated today.
After a routine bug check, Ubuntu failed to start. I once again had to
drop down to a command prompt and switch off acpi to get it going again.

Cheers

Re: [Bug 460321] Re: Critical bug in restricted drivers - enabling ati restricted drivers corrupts fstab

2009-10-31 Thread James Pursey
Just to keep you informed. I reinstalled Karmic today and I had no
problems with fstab. Whereas with the release candidate I couldn't even
boot in recovery mode after installing fglrx, I was able this time round
to do exactly that and finish the configuration of the ati graphics
card.

[Bug 460321]

2009-10-29 Thread James Pursey

Hi,

I have since reinstalled Jaunty, so I can't look into this again straight away.
What I did was (from memory):

* Install 9.10
* After installation was complete, I logged into the new installation.
Everything was fine.
* I installed the updates. Restarted. No problems so far.
* I clicked on the restricted hardware icon and restarted.
* On rebooting, there was a message reporting that one of the mediums in
fstab couldn't be mounted. Unfortunately, the message was quite long and I
didn't have time to write it down. I tried to take a photo, but the message is
illegible in the photo.
* Instead of arriving at the login screen, the monitor went black and the
caps lock light started flashing.
* I then tried rebooting the computer into recovery mode. When in recovery
mode, I had a message indicating that the operating system couldn't be mounted.
* I rebooted the computer into a live session on the live cd.
* I chrooted to the installed system and opened the fstab file with nano. It
was as I reported.

I can't guarantee that I didn't make a mistake - but I presume that when I've
chrooted to the installed system, the path /etc/fstab is that of the installed
system and not the live cd.
If it helps you to track this bug, I am prepared to repeat the attempt this
weekend. Is there anything particular I should look out for or do to help the
bug tracking process?

Cheers

James Pursey

[Bug 460321] [NEW] Critical bug in restricted drivers - enabling ati restricted drivers corrupts fstab

2009-10-25 Thread James Pursey
Public bug reported:

I have already indicated that when enabling the ATI proprietory driver,
I cannot boot into Ubuntu Karmic. The bug number is 445191. I tried
again today with the release candidate, and it seems that enabling this
driver actually corrupts fstab. I tried chrooting into the system with a
live cd and replacing the corrupted fstab with the original that I had
saved, but the result is the same. Here is what is in the corrupted
fstab:

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid -o value -s UUID' to print the universally unique identifier
# for a device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name
# devices that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).
#
# file system mount point type options dump pass
proc/proc procdefaults0 0
# / was on /dev/sda5 during installation
UUID=16c98f5d-da47-41ec-b75b-b4dd831ce986 /   ext4
errors=remount-ro 0   1
# swap was on /dev/sda6 during installation
UUID=8345b988-af02-4936-b104-3ac362302c54 noneswapsw
  0 0

/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0
0

Here is the fstab file after enabling the ati driver :

aufs / aufs rw 0 0
tmpfs /tmp tmpfs nosuid,nodev 0 0
/dev/sda6 swap swap defaults 0 0

[Bug 445191] [NEW] Enabling proprietory ATI driver prevents X from starting

2009-10-07 Thread James Pursey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

Hi

The bug report that I am sending doesn't concern Ubuntu 9.04 but Ubuntu 9.10
beta. I have never submitted a bug report to Ubuntu before and I wasn't aware
of the Apport tool beforehand.
I installed 9.10 out of curiosity to see if the stability and performance
problems I experience with the fglrx driver 9.04 would be resolved in 9.10.
However, after I enabled the driver by pressing the Restricted Hardware Drivers
icon and rebooted the computer, I was presented with a black display – no
splash screen, no log on screen, just black (and the caps lock light was
blinking). I have since re-installed 9.04 on this system – which explains why
some of the auto-generated information in this report isn't correct.
Also, and I don't know if this is a related problem or not and whether I should
file a separate bug report, after installing 9.10 and being prompted to reboot,
the screen would flicker between being black and showing the wallpaper, and the
only way to stop the machine was by pressing the off button on the computer.
This was before the ATI driver was enabled.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: amd64
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04
NonfreeKernelModules: fglrx
Package: firefox 3.0.14+build2+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.9.04.1
