[Bug 2045535] Re: Only one disk shows in Xubuntu auto-resize partitioning dialogue

2024-04-14 Thread Jane Atkinson
This appears to be a ubiquity-only bug. It doesn't appear in either
Subiquity or Calamares - tested in a VM with an external USB drive
attached. The USB drive appears in Grub, which is to be expected, but
the installers don't attempt to install to it.

Unless there's some flavour that I'm not aware of still using Ubiquity,
could this bug be closed?

[Bug 1860926] Re: Ubuntu 20.04 Systemd fails to configure bridged network

2020-04-24 Thread Jane Atkinson
The following has me wondering if this has partly to do with the
presence of containers, VMs and similar items.

I upgraded my router to 20.04 a few days before release. (Plain Ubuntu
command-line OS on a PC Engines APU1 board) That machine has a bridge
network comprising two ethernets and one wifi. I've had no problems with
it - it comes up nicely on boot. Whereas I have to use the crontab
workaround on my main PC which has a bridge for VMs.

I'm not clever enough to imagine why this might be the case, but I
thought it might be worth noting.

[Bug 1874178] [NEW] Unlocking existing session needs two attempts after selecting Switch User

2020-04-21 Thread Jane Atkinson
Public bug reported:

This has been occurring during the Xubuntu post-install test. It's not
the same as Bug #1776475, as it's not necessary to have logged in as
another user (or even for another user to exist) for the problem to
happen.

My sequence of actions is:

*Create new user.
*Open a program (usually Thunar or Terminal).
*Lock session.
*Click on "Switch User". <-- This is all that's necessary to trigger it.
*Enter password to unlock my own session.
*Then there's a delay and screen goes black, then the unlock prompt appears
again.
*The second time, my session unlocks.

This particular report is from a QEMU/KVM vm, but it's also been
happening on a bare-metal install.

The default value was 0 minutes. I set it to one minute and it made no

Incidentally, it seems that clicking on the "Switch user" button is
enough to trigger the problem. I did this because I couldn't remember

necessary to actually log in as the other user.

[Bug 1776475] Re: Unlocking existing session often requires several attempts.

2020-04-20 Thread Jane Atkinson
@Stéphane: Sorry, I didn't see this sooner. I must have forgotten to
subscribe. (oops)

In Xubuntu Final (iso 20200420.1), there is no Security tab in the Power
Manager. Only a "security" checkbox which controls "Lock screen when
system is going to sleep". I had a look in the configuration editor in
case something was hiding there - nothing relevant there.

My sequence of actions is:

*Create new user.
*Open a program (usually Thunar or Terminal).
*Lock session.
*Log in as new user which I just created.
*Log out of new user's session.
*Select my original user.
*Enter password to unlock.
*Then there's a delay and screen goes black, then the unlock prompt appears
again.
*The second time, the original session unlocks.

It's occurred to me that this just might be an issue with the QEMU/KVM
vm, if no one else is having problems. I don't have a spare machine for
testing, unfortunately, though I might be able to do something with an
external drive. If I get a chance later today, I see what I can do.

[Bug 1872185] [NEW] Netplan not connecting bridge with static IP

2020-04-11 Thread Jane Atkinson
Public bug reported:

System is Xubuntu 20.04, built up from Xubuntu-core base.

I have a very simple bridge consisting of one ethernet interface, which I need
for bridging to QEMU/KVM vms. It used to work properly on 18.04.

The .yaml file is as follows:

network:
  version: 2
  renderer: networkd
  ethernets:
enp3s0:
  dhcp4: no

  bridges:
br0:
  dhcp4: no
  dhcp6: no
  addresses: [ 192.168.1.65/24 ]
  gateway4: 192.168.1.1
  nameservers:
addresses: [ 192.168.1.1 ]
  interfaces:
- enp3s0

On logging in immediately after bootup, I see that br0 is UP, but has no IP
address assigned to it.

syslog contains the item:

systemd-networkd[367]: br0: Could not set route: Nexthop has invalid
gateway. Network is unreachable

If I run "sudo netplan apply", either after logging in or as a @reboot cron
job, the bridge then connects with no problem.

If I change br0 to dhcp4: yes (and remove addresses, gateway4 and nameservers),
br0 connects automatically on bootup. I can tweak dnsmasq on the router so that
the machine gets the IP I want every time, but I'd prefer to be able to set a
static IP address and have it work.

[Bug 1805197] Re: cannot switching keyboard layout with xfce4-keyboard-settings

2020-04-10 Thread Jane Atkinson
This bug seems still to be present in Xubuntu 20.04

To be able to switch keyboard layouts after reboot (or logout), I need
to go to keyboard settings, change the keyboard layout switch key to
something else (and then back again, though that's not absolutely
necessary).

It's not so bad on my main machine, because that tends to be left
running for days at a time, but on a laptop I imagine it would be really
frustrating.

[Bug 1869554] [NEW] Graphics freezing during install

2020-03-28 Thread Jane Atkinson
Public bug reported:

QEMU/KVM vm

The install disk graphics froze up while removing apt-clone (near the
end). I could move the mouse, but not click on anything. However the
installation continued to run behind the scenes, and after waiting until
there was no further activity in the virtual machine manager, I was able
to boot successfully into the new system.

I was unable to retrieve any logs from the live ISO.

[Bug 1856418] [NEW] Synaptic in Wayland locks up display

2019-12-14 Thread Jane Atkinson
Public bug reported:

I'm running Ubuntu (Gnome-shell) 20.04 in a QEMU/KVM vm.

When I'm using Wayland, I can open synaptic package manager successfully
by inputting my password.

So far as I can tell, it then will let me download updates to the repos
and allow me to search for packages. (Usually update-manager downloads
the updates automatically, so it's mostly not necessary for synaptic to
do this.

But, when I proceed to install, unless it's a single, small download,
synaptic will lock up the display. The mouse "revolving wheel" stops
turning, and although I can still move the mouse, nothing else works. I
can't select anything with the mouse. I can't even use "Send Key" in the
virtual machine manager to select a console.

If I leave the machine for a while, the download and install completes
successfully in the background.

If I connect to the machine over ssh, I can't shut it down or reboot. If
I issue those commands, ssh just disconnects and the machine remains
running. Only the big red button in the virtual machine manager will do
anything.

None of this is happening when running Xorg.

[Bug 1854603] Re: Greek (polytonic) keyboard layout not handling some accent marks

2019-12-06 Thread Jane Atkinson
Since I first reported this bug, I've noticed that I also encounter it
on a fairly minimal Openbox system where I'm using setxkbmap to manage
the keyboard layouts. Which suggests that it may not be a Gnome-Shell
issue at all.

I've also got a Xubuntu 20.04 VM, and I'm not having these problems with
the keyboard layout there.

[Bug 964331] Re: Ubiquity chooses which drive to install to with no user input

2019-12-03 Thread Jane Atkinson
Yes, the OS was installed where I wanted it to be, but grub was
installed to the wrong drive.

I think the fact that the install drive was /dev/vda might have made a
difference. That automatically put it at the end of an alphabetical
list, which could have confused grub-install.

[Bug 964331] Re: Ubiquity chooses which drive to install to with no user input

2019-10-16 Thread Jane Atkinson
When I do a side-by-side install, it's immediately after an entire-drive
install. The existing install is on /dev/vda1 and there's nothing else
on the drive. (The drive is virtIO.)

The USB stick is /dev/sda. I'm not installing from the USB stick, by the
way. I'm using an ISO file as CDROM. I had simply forgotten to remove
the stick and then wondered why the VM didn't boot into the new install.

I noticed a similar thing when I was doing a manual install. Grub wanted
to install on /dev/sda. In this instance, I was able to get it to use
the correct drive manually.

My suspicion, for what it's worth, is that Ubiquity is using
alphabetical order to find the drive to install Grub to. Though I don't
know why it would default to the correct drive for the actual install,
and then change its mind, so to speak, for Grub install.

Unfortunately, I don't have a spare machine to do a bare-metal install to see
if it does the same thing there.

[Bug 964331] Re: Ubiquity chooses which drive to install to with no user input

2019-10-15 Thread Jane Atkinson
This is still happening in Eoan RC.

I was installing side-by-side to a VM. There was a USB stick inserted
with a connection to the VM (from a previous test). Grub installed to
the USB stick (/dev/sda, as distinct from /dev/vda for the main VM
drive). There was no place where I could tell grub where I wanted it
installed.

I think ubiquity should either install grub to the drive where the
system is, or give the user the choice. Otherwise, someone who's
accidentally left an external drive or USB stick connected is going to
be very confused.

Today's update to spice-vdagent means that the mouse pointer will move

I think that the crash may be related to not having libguestfs channel

[Bug 1845424] [NEW] Calamares not selecting correct timezone when connected to internet (QEMU/KVM)

2019-09-25 Thread Jane Atkinson
Public bug reported:

When installing from Lubuntu ISO image 20190925 in a QEMU/KVM vm, the
"Where are you" screen defaults to New York, although my correct
timezone is Pacific/Auckland and the vm is connected to the internet.

I have double-checked that the internet is working by pinging
ubuntuforums.org or ubuntu.com

Ubiquity finds the timezone correctly.

[Bug 1772771] [NEW] Opensmtpd not starting on bootup

2018-05-22 Thread Jane Atkinson
Public bug reported:

I have opensmtpd installed on my desktop PC so as to get emails from
cron etc.

Since I upgraded to Xubuntu 18.04, opensmtpd won't start on bootup.

systemctl status opensmtpd shows:

● opensmtpd.service - OpenSMTPD SMTP server
   Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/opensmtpd.service; enabled; vendor
preset: enabled)

 Docs: man:smtpd(8)

May 23 12:25:22 ja-desktop systemd[1]: Failed to start OpenSMTPD SMTP server.

enp3s0 is definitely a valid interface; the only thing I can think of is that
it hasn't been defined at the time opensmtpd tries to start.

I can start opensmtpd manually once I've logged in.

[Bug 1754241] [NEW] Partitioner does not edit Partition and then hangs

2018-03-07 Thread Jane Atkinson
Public bug reported:

Testing manual ISO install of Ubuntu-budgie in Vbox VM. Existing
partitions were /dev/sda1 18 GB (approx), and /dev/sda5 8 GB (approx).

For the manual install, I intended to use about half of /dev/sda1.
However, I got this message:

The test of the file system with type ext4 in partitioin #1 of SCSI3(0,0,0)
found uncorrected errors.

If you do not go back to the partitioning menu and correct these errors,
the partition will be used as is.

Clicking on "Go back" changes the "Used" figure to 0MB and the partition
dialogue then hangs on "scanning disks".

There is also no mention of /dev/sda2 (the extended partition), meaning
that there's no possibility of resizing it.

I could then quit the installer and continue booting into the live CD.

[Bug 1723760] Re: No restart after installation

2017-10-17 Thread Jane Atkinson
Had this problem after installing Ubuntu Budgie ISO 20171017.1 (auto-
resize). As I was using a Vbox VM, I just forcibly shut down the VM and
started it again. The install itself was fine.

I had previously done a manual install using the exact same ISO file. I
don't know why one should reboot correctly and the other not do so.

Tried the same thing, using a 31GB virtualbox HDD, with 64bit Ubuntu

Installed and subsequently booted into a side-by-side install using the

Maybe it's a 32bit problem, or it's been fixed in the current image?

[Bug 981583] Re: 'Erase Ubuntu [version] and reinstall' with 12.04 beta2 does not respect existing partitioning scheme

2017-04-09 Thread Jane Atkinson
Occurred when testing Install (erase and reinstall) in a Vbox VM.

Initial partitioning scheme was root on /dev/sda1 and /home on
/dev/sda5. Reinstall puts the whole system on /dev/sda1 and leaves
/dev/sda5 untouched.

The test may appear to have worked, but anyone who thinks that their
previous install (and data) has been totally wiped is mistaken.

I installed 1.2 on my EeePC by enabling the Proposed repository in

can break things, but is useful for testing.

Once the patched version is released and is moved from the Proposed to
the regular repository, it will automatically be updated.

2016-04-12 Thread Jane Atkinson
Additional information:

I ran dpkg from the recovery menu. I'm uncertain whether that's caused
the following behaviour or not.

On logging in, network manager shows "[wireless card name] disconnected"

On turning off wireless with the function key, network manager shows
"[wireless card name] device not managed"

On turning on the wireless using the function key, network manager shows
"Enable wifi" box unchecked.

Checking the box allows the machine to connect to the router.

If I turn the machine off, or reboot, I have to go through the last three steps
again.

[Bug 1568454] [NEW] TeXworks requires dictionaries to be in myspell directory

2016-04-09 Thread Jane Atkinson
Public bug reported:

I'm using TeXworks 0.5~svn1363-6build2 in Xubuntu 16.04

Hunspell is installed, and so are some hunspell dictionaries. I would
expect TeXworks to find these dictionaries and display them in the Edit
-> Spelling menu.

Instead, I need to create symlinks from the files in /usr/share/hunspell
to /usr/share/myspell/dicts before I can select any languages.

A Google search indicates that this behaviour has been occurring for
some time.

** Affects: texworks (Ubuntu)

[Bug 1562279] Re: Can't set en_NZ locale

2016-04-01 Thread Jane Atkinson
The locale settings were simply the result of following the standard
install process and confirming that my location was Auckland when
requested.

It sounds like something isn't working properly during the install. Do I
need to report a new bug?

[Bug 1562279] Re: Can't set en_NZ locale

2016-04-01 Thread Jane Atkinson
I just installed the latest daily ISO for Ubuntu.

Immediately after installation, the command "locale" shows the
following:

LANG=en_NZ.UTF-8
LANGUAGE=en_NZ:en
LC_CTYPE="en_NZ.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC="en_NZ.UTF-8"
LC_TIME="en_NZ.UTF-8"
LC_COLLATE="en_NZ.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY="en_NZ.UTF-8"
LC_MESSAGES="en_NZ.UTF-8"
LC_PAPER="en_NZ.UTF-8"
LC_NAME="en_NZ.UTF-8"
LC_ADDRESS="en_NZ.UTF-8"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_NZ.UTF-8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_NZ.UTF-8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_NZ.UTF-8"
LC_ALL=

Which is more or less what I'm wanting.

This leads me to think that the problem may be with the way I installed
this instance of Xubuntu in the first place (from ubuntu-core, if that's
relevant).

Time for a reinstall, I think.

[Bug 1562279] [NEW] Can't set en_NZ locale

2016-03-26 Thread Jane Atkinson
Public bug reported:

After updating language-pack-en and language-pack-en-base in Xubuntu
16.04, I can no longer set en_NZ.UTF-8 as my locale in lightdm-greeter.

Current locale, after fiddling with language support, is:

LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LANGUAGE=en
LC_CTYPE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC=en_NZ.UTF-8
LC_TIME=en_NZ.UTF-8
LC_COLLATE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY=en_NZ.UTF-8
LC_MESSAGES="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_PAPER=en_NZ.UTF-8
LC_NAME=en_NZ.UTF-8
LC_ADDRESS=en_NZ.UTF-8
LC_TELEPHONE=en_NZ.UTF-8
LC_MEASUREMENT=en_NZ.UTF-8
LC_IDENTIFICATION=en_NZ.UTF-8
LC_ALL=

Previously, everything was "en_NZ.UTF-8"

I imagine that the same issue is going to apply to a number of English-
language locales other than Australia, Canada, UK and US. These four,
plus a generic "en" (which appears to default to en_US) are all that are
displayed in the lightdm-greeter language menu.

[Bug 1560356] [NEW] ubiquity will not start on Xenial liveUSB

2016-03-22 Thread Jane Atkinson
Public bug reported:

Ubiquity doesn't load when attempting to install Xubuntu image of

Attempting to run the command

sh -c 'ubiquity gtk_ui'

However, I can get ubiquity to start successfully if I use the command

sudo -H ubiquity

I didn't follow through with the install in this case.

[Bug 1528708] [NEW] Artefacts on boot when using gfxmode $linux_gfx_mode in Grub

2015-12-22 Thread Jane Atkinson
Public bug reported:

Since kernel version 4.3 was added to xenial, I've been unable to boot
to a usable desktop when using the default Grub settings. Most, but not
all, of the screen is covered with an overlay, shown in the attached
screenshot.

When experimenting with a fresh install, I discovered that the same
thing happens even with a command-line-only system, before X is
installed.

Hardware: Asus EeePC 900

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile
915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller [8086:2592] (rev 04) (prog-if 00
[VGA controller])
00:02.1 Display controller [0380]: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML
Express Graphics Controller [8086:2792] (rev 04)

The workaround is to remove the line:

gfxmode $linux_gfx_mode

from Grub.

For the moment, I've changed /etc/grub.d/10_linux to

 $gfxpayload_dynamic="0"

so that the change holds after update-grub is run.

The daily live ISO (I've tested with Xubuntu only) boots to a normal
desktop.

[Bug 1275573] [NEW] Qsynth freezes on restart after changing audio driver

2014-02-02 Thread Jane Atkinson
Public bug reported:

If I change the audio driver in Qsynth, it asks if I want to restart the
engine. If I click "Yes", the program freezes.

If I click on the close box, it will eventually close with the usual
message from the system about the program not responding. But it takes a
while for this to happen.

The workaround appears to be to click "No", close the program manually
and reload it.

[Bug 1271369] [NEW] Corrupted grub screen in Trusty alpha 2

Output of lspci -vn is attached.

When I boot, the grub screen will appear to flash between appearing in
the normal position and one showing the left edge in the middle of the
screen. It makes choosing the correct entry from the menu more difficult
than it needs to be.

Grub itself behaves normally; it's just the display that's unstable.
